Description of Work: Randy came over to give me an estimate for my attic finishing project. He took plans I had done by another company so he could provide the estimate. He returned the plans a week or so later and did not give me an estimate. He mentioned as his main reason the work would possibly cause first floor ceiling damage which would have to be repaired. I found this odd because this is a typical and not terribly significant complication of construction. He seemed very hesitant about the idea of doing the job. My understanding was that he was going to call back but he never did.

I left a message for our client laying out the reasons for declining to bid the job. Was surprised by the review, thought it was handled.

Description of Work: I previously submitted a report in which I was unhappy with the response from R&R. Since my report, I have received an apology note & a gift card for their lack of reponsiveness. I appreciate the sentiment. I have hired another contractor but would consider R&R for future work.

I've hated the kitchen in this house since I bought it one year ago. I asked three firms for bids; one did not respond, and one gave a reasonable bid on the kitchen only. I chose R&R's bid because they included the other work that I wanted done (relocating the attic stairs, enlarging one entrance and removing the other, and removing the wood stove and repairing the tile floor) and because of their outstanding ratings on Angie's List. Randy and Ryan were great. Randy spent two hours with me and the kitchen designer ordering the cabinets. They made very valuable suggestions, including one that I didn't think possible: saving enough of the torn-out floor tile to repair the hole in the floor left by the old wood stove. They were on the job without fail for four weeks until the project was finished, each day painstakingly putting dropcloths down before they started and cleaning up meticulously when they were through. They were able and willing to work when I could not be at home. Best of all, they didn't mind constant supervision from my dogs, who utterly adored them. R&R demo'd and replaced the whole kitchen, including the ancient, dark cabinets and dark green tile. Ryan did a beautiful job laying the new tile! They took out the 1970s era lights and replaced them with more functional can lights. The dryer connection in the laundry area had been disabled; they repaired the 220 connection and the vent, removed a non-working pocket door, replaced the old cabinets and added a nifty new broom closet for storage. They enlarged the entrance from the living room from 4 ft to 8 ft wide and removed the entrance in the hallway, replacing it with a hall closet that the house also lacked. The pull-down stairs to the attic were oddly located and broken -- R&R removed the broken stairs and relocated the new ones to provide better access. I already have asked R&R to give me an estimate on the next project: the master bathroom. I don't want anyone else doing it.
Description of Work: Removed wood stove and replaced tile. Removed old whole-house fan and relocated trap door and stairs to attic. Gutted kitchen and rebuilt. Closed up one entrance to the kitchen and enlarged the remaining entrance. Repaired dryer connection in laundry area and reinstalled dryer, new broom closet, and new laundry cabinets. About 1/2 the cost of the job was materials.

They did a great job. Polite, professional, prompt. Only comment was that they were busy during the quoting and scheduling time and took a little while to get back to us. But I would recommend them and will use them for the next work I have.

R&R Construction remodeled my bathroom in 2 weeks. They were courteous, professional, and flexible. They provided great information on suppliers, were patient with me as I made changes to the plan, were honest and accurate about the amount of time my changes would add, and did an excellent job installing, finishing and cleaning up. I have no complaints. They do good work at a good price. I recommend them.

My husband and I consider Randy and Ryan Demere of R & R Construction a rare find. They exhibit a pride of workmanship that one no longer encounters as contractors and their employees rush to get that final payment and leave for their next job. Their first job for us is described in my Angie?s List review of January 2010. Despite the dust and disorder, we truly enjoyed the time they spent working for us and are very pleased with the results. The final product is the result of a group effort. I had pieced together what I wanted from photos, articles, and websites. Choices of materials were most often gleaned from the web, with R & R picking up samples to assist in our final selections. Randy placed and picked up all orders, not only ensuring us his contractor?s discount but making certain the dimensions and specifications of each item were accurate. When I had difficulty visualizing some of our ideas, they purchased a computer program to allow us to try them out by altering photographs of our existing bathrooms. To help us select the color scheme for our walls, ceilings, and wainscoting, Randy ordered a dozen 8?x12? color chips from Kelly Moore to facilitate our final choice. Randy and Ryan routinely arrived between 7:30 and 8 A.M., despite a 47-mile drive to Davis. I never saw them take a break and the work dictated when they would stop for lunch. Then, after working a full day, Randy and Ryan frequently made a stop on the way home to drop something off at the dump, pick up an order, pick up a sample, etc.Our bathrooms were 40 years old and suffered from water damage. R & R stripped the bathrooms to the studs, insulation, and concrete slab, hauled away all the waste, treated and repaired the damage, then built the various layers back up. Whenever a step required a certain period of exposure or drying time, they would wait the required time, moving on to a different task in the meantime. They turned to subcontractors whenever they felt they could not do a job as well as a specialist: drywall, installation of frameless shower doors, and reinstallation of carpet at the tile/carpet transitions. As our bathrooms are not large, we selected 3?x6? travertine tile for the floor. We all had a part in the selection of the various tile colors and types, but it was Ryan who did the huge job of installing the complex pattern I wanted as well as the contrasting border and baseboard tile. He didn?t even stop for lunch when laying the first floor. The second, larger floor tiling was a 10-hour job, which he did in one day. The care he took in deciding the placement of each stone makes the floors the standout feature of the bathrooms. Our old tub was to be refinished, however, once it was clear that the old hardware needed to be replaced as well, R & R recommended complete replacement. I?m still not sure how Randy and Ryan managed to carry in and install the 300 lb, Kohler cast iron tub in a space a few inches wider than the tub as I couldn?t bear to watch!
Description of Work: RENOVATION OF TWO BATHROOMS: Stripped the bathrooms to the studs, insulation, and concrete slab, hauled away all the waste, treated and repaired water damage, then built the various layers back up, including the plumbing, valves, drain pipe, various waterproof layers, re-enforced the site for a new grab bar, as well as applied a “floater” coating on the floors to isolate the new tiles from cracks in the slab. Subcontracted jobs: drywall, installation of frameless shower doors, and reinstallation of carpet at the tile/carpet transitions. Both bathrooms: painted then installed beadboard wainscoting, laid travertine tile floor and baseboards; replaced toilet with a Toto EcoDrake unit (recycled old one); replaced old valves; changed the valves and trap under the vanity sinks; applied primer then 2-3 coats of paint throughout. Drywall replaced by a subcontractor. New hardware by Moen or Kohler in oil rubbed bronze. Master bathroom: installed Bermuda sand Swanstone shower surround including decorative trim, all hardware and attendant pipes and valves as described above, grab bar, two metal hooks, shower seat, recessed shampoo/soap shelf, and two corner shelves; rebuilt window sill; had frameless shower doors installed; installed a combination light/vent; installed two towel racks and toilet paper holder; replaced vanity counter and faucet; replaced door and hardware in existing pocket door and adjusted lock which had been non-functional; removed rust and repainted interior of an existing medicine cabinet which is part of the vanity mirror; Hardware was Moen or Kohler in oil rubbed bronze. Second bathroom: installed Bermuda sand Swanstone tub surround including decorative trim, all hardware and attendant pipes and valves; installed a recessed shampoo/soap shelf; rebuilt the window sill; installed towel rack and toilet paper holder; replaced vanity counter with a custom Swanstone unit; replaced faucet; changed the valves and trap under the vanity sink A six-foot mirror that we decided to keep was removed and R & R had a few inches of damaged edges removed in a local shop. They devised a travertine border for the mirror to tie in with the floor. The light fixture was replaced. Replaced old medicine cabinet; installed a pocket door in place of the standard, existing door. A drywall specialist replaced the drywall in the bathroom, as well as the wall removed during construction of the pocket door. Replaced old tub with a Kohler, cast iron tub; installed all new hardware including a new shower head. Additional renovations: replaced four interior doors and hardware; replaced the valves under the kitchen sink; installed four fluorescent lights along with the wiring and switches in the garage.

Randy and Ryan were wonderful to work with: punctual, responsive, polite, friendly, and professional. From the first meetings with them, we felt we could trust them completely in our house all day while we were at work, and that we could trust them to oversee any subcontractors they might have in to do dry wall work or anything else. Due to a prior bad experience, I wanted the contract to be more detailed than they were used to but they had no objection to waiting for me to write out a longer contract to sign, and in fact, on the strength of our word that we DID want them to do the job, they went to the city and procured and paid for a remodeling permit even before we had signed the contract with them! PUNCTUALITY: They turned up punctually every morning at 7am and started work immediately. It did not feel awkward at all to be wolfing down our bowls of cereal as they came in, because they were so unobtrusive. CLEANLINESS AND PROTECTION OF PROPERTY: They took pains to protect everything from damage and dust/debris. They laid down a great deal of plastic sheeting over all of our furniture, and over windows and curtains, taping it to the walls and floors so it would stay in place. In addition, they laid down some kind of really durable paper sheeting on our hardwood floors, and plastic sheeting all over the carpeting in the loft and up the stairs to the loft. They also taped a "plastic sheeting curtain" to the ceiling to separate our dining area from the area where they were carrying materials through and where they then put up scaffolding. When they completed the job, they took all the protective material off, swept and vacuumed and even mopped dust off the hardwood floors, leaving everything in perfect condition. They also washed down our outside deck where they'd been carrying stuff in and out. QUALITY OF WORK: Every day, when we came home, we could see clear progress. Everything was done well, the new wall feels solid, it seems to be pretty soundproof, and the old crawl space access can no longer be seen as they did such an amazing job of blending in the fill with the existing ceiling, blending in the new wall with the old, replacing the staircase trim they had taken off, etc. Everything has been well textured and beautifully painted. ATTENTION TO DETAIL: The joinery is not visible at all, and Randy and Ryan's extra attention to detail showed in things like making the edges of the crawl space access rounded to match the way the walls in our house have rounded outer edges. The painting has been done really well too. THE EXTRA MILE: Randy and Ryan agreed to hang some artwork for us on the exterior surface of the new wall, while they still had the scaffolding up. They did not add any additional charge for this, despite it probably taking them longer than they had expected. Ryan came with me to the local Ace Hardware to pick out the right picture hook fixtures, and they did a stunning job. We couldn't have hung the pieces of metal wall art better if we had tried! FINISHING UP: They returned after finishing the job, to get their final payment and to return our keys, parking permit, etc. At that time, they quickly trimmed off a little edgy paint where we had pushed up the crawl space access - the paint had sealed it and we should have cut it first before pushing it up but didn't know. They had no problem finishing off that little detail for me. GENERAL ATTITUDE: Very nice to work with, answered all of our questions at all times, just great guys. I would recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: Randy and Ryan remodeled our loft into a full bedroom. The loft already had a window and a closet, but there was one half wall overlooking the living room, and an open doorway. The job included procuring a permit from the city; building up the half wall into a full wall, including framing, drywall, soundproofing and insulating; installing a doorway and door; shifting the electrical box from one wall to another, and moving access to the crawl space above the ceiling. Also all texturing, painting, finishing and touching up of new walls, new ceiling, new crawl space access and new door, to match the old. And putting in new baseboard for the new wall.

As I mentioned above, their work was outstanding and far better than we dared hope for.
Description of Work: After consulting Angie’s List, we selected R & R Construction to replace decayed rafters in the 28 foot portion of our roof spanning part of our outdoor courtyard as well as repair or replace other portions of our 40 year old home [estimate = $6961]. Our choice of contractor was based on their A ratings on Angie’s List and the four enthusiastic recommendations for jobs big and small they had completed in 2009. At the time we were unaware that they were the ones who did the most recent remodel of the Davis Food Coop, further proof of their abilities. We are so satisfied with every aspect of their work that we have since contracted them to remodel our two bathrooms. Randy and Ryan Demere, a father and son team, are hard working, punctual, personable individuals whose workmanship is of the highest quality. At every point, they prepared their work area with safety and cleanliness in mind. Similarly, their on-site equipment was left neatly organized to minimize the inconvenience to us. The two of them completed all the work themselves, with the exceptions mentioned. Details of the project are as follows. They primed, painted and replaced two 14 foot beams and fourteen 8 foot beams comprising the roof rafters as well as a central support column. Sheet metal shields were installed on all exposed beams, even on several old ones they felt would benefit from protection. The new beams were spliced in so well that one can’t tell that the original structure has been altered. All replacement parts were painted before they were put into place then a final coat of paint was applied after the construction was completed. We needed to replace our faulty wrought iron gate. With the help of a gate manufacturer and photographs of our old unit, R&R came up with a pleasing design. It is not only attractive but far sturdier than our old one. We had R&R replace three interior doors and all the hardware, installing new lever handles and hinges, as well as a deadbolt lock and new threshold for a door leading to our garage. R&R hauled away all the old material: beams, doors, gate, etc. Another aspect of R&R that we appreciate is their willingness to put a temporary patch over an uneven crack in our driveway. The one unforeseen job that became apparent after the rotted beams were removed was the need to replace an internally decayed, large decorative column by our front gate. R&R rebuilt the column and subcontracted the stucco work. Here we experienced our first complaint: the subcontractor failed to appear as promised on numerous occasions and was the reason the job extended into the new year. The owner of the stucco company responsible for the final work was out of the country over the holidays. The price also seemed unusually high [$2865], though a Google search confirmed that stucco work is tricky. Also, Randy said the subcontractor justified his fee by the need to apply the stucco in layers over several trips. Ultimately, we have no complaints about the subcontractor’s work. Our overall evaluation of Ryan and Randy Demere of R&R Construction is that they do outstanding work, putting them leagues above any other persons or companies we have hired to do work in our home. They begin their next, bigger job in our home in a few weeks.

The job went perfect. I couldn't be happier with the results. You cant even tell there was a slider there anymore. Looks like the window was there the whole time. Ryan, from R&R, showed up on time, had all the tools necessary, went right to work and wasted little time. He had no problem answering all my questions, explaining what he would be doing, or offering advice when making some last minute decisions for the best possible outcome. And the job was done almost exactly when he said it would be. He even showed a lot of patience with our annoyingly curious dog who liked to get in the way. A great experience. I will absolutely use R&R again.
Description of Work: Took out an old single pane sliding door in our second bedroom and replaced it with a window. It required installing new siding to match existing, insulation, drywall and trim (interior and exterior) in addition to framing and installing the new window. Basicly got it all ready to paint, which I did. Price did not include new window, I bought that separately.

When we were ready for R&R to come in, they had subcontractors lined up and waiting to get into the house. Because we were working with an insurance company, there were some unfortunate delays, but R&R worked with us to get them resolved and keep on a time schedule as best as we were able. We're generally pleased with the work- everything they did themselves is great, and their subcontractors got the job done. We brought up a number of minor issues, which were promptly fixed. Randy & Ryan answered their phones when we called, and if they were unable to immediately, very quickly returned our calls. We were very impressed with how reachable they were, and how willing to address our concerns.
Description of Work: The supply line to an upstairs toilet broke, flooding the entire house. An insurance contractor dried the house out and another insurance contractor installed the flooring, then R&R came in for reconstruction.

The quality of the work performed was outstanding, and really made a substantial impact to our home. The new bathrooms are beautiful, as well as the entry and hall way. R&R Construction provided quality work and a very reasonable price. They were very easy to work with, were timely and conscientious in their work, and kept everything clean. I would recommend them to any one.
Description of Work: R&R Construction remodeled two full bathrooms, one half bathroom, a laundry room, and tiled our hall and entryway. The bathroom work included complete demo, new window sills, new tile floors, toilets, all plumbing fixtures, tile shower, tub and tile surround, new tile counters and sinks, pedestal sink, glass shower/tub enclosures. New tile baseboards throughout. Everything was taken out and put in new. The hall and entry way received new tile and baseboards. The laundry room received new tile and tile base boards.
