This painter is David Paul DeMars. He is unlicensed and the State of California requires that a painter doing $500 or more in painting work be licensed; therefore, this work done against California law. His painting was incomplete and defective (partially painted windows, streaked walls/looked as if only one coat applied, smears and smudges, bleeding, failure to "cut in" paint properly at wall and ceiling joints. Windows were half painated. Also, bad Venetian plaster job with cracking/globbing/stains. He failed to provide a cost estimate when additional Venetian plaster work was added (kitchen, master bath). After being paid all but about $232 for the job, he abandoned the job refusing to fix and complete without more money. The painting and plaster were defective, which required sanding the Venetian and redoing. He did not do the triptych. After receiving payment for than was agreed upon in written contract, he abandoned the job.
Description of Work: He was to paint all the walls in the condo and apply Venetian plaster faux finish in the master bath, guest bath, kitchen, and one living room wall; also to do a triptych for one wall. UPDATE APRIL 5, 2012 AFTER RULINGS BY THE STATE CONTRACTORS' LICENSE BOARD AND THE SUPERIOR COURT: Mr. DeMars does not tell the truth and instead of dealing with the facts prefers to accuse and defame the victim as well as throw ethnic (and irrelevant) slurs against others, which he has done recently in both the court room and on the web site of the Better Business Bureau.. He also seems unable to grasp the concept that filing law suits against people who take the money and run is the recourse our judicial system provides. And these cases have had judgments in my favor: The Contractors' State License Board in case SF 2011003177 both cited and fined Mr. DeMars for work in excess of $500 without a contractor's license, which is against California law. I did file a law suit based on defective work and abandonment of the job before compleetion. In Small Claims case number LAV 11V07135, the judge agreed with me and issued a judgment ordering DeMars to pay me the amount I had to pay others to fix and complete his work. And the letter from the "company that built her condo" was written by the office administrator, not the developer - and that administrator is a friend of DeMars' sister (who is the designer who brought in unlicensed contractors to do the work here). The other unlicense contractor his sister brought to the job also has been fined by the Contractors' State License Board and also lost the law suit filed against him.
