We?ve known Mike Logan for over twenty-five years. Early on, he replaced all of our internal doors and hardware within the house and did a great job. This is why we hired him to replace our 42? wide front door when we remodeled our home. We selected a solid mahogany door from AAW based on recommendations from Mike. Unknown to us, we later learned that this door comes only in a seven foot height, so it was necessary that the door be shortened. When that was done, the bottom panel of the door was rendered about 4? shorter in height than it should have been, and it looks odd (you can tell that the door has been sliced off at the very bottom). Doors are Mike?s business. Why didn?t he know this? He convinced us of the high quality of the door, in spite of its ?shortcomings.? We should have put the brakes on the project right then and sought someone else. After waiting a few months for the door to be primed, painted and cured, Mike?s installers arrived with the finished door (which was beautifully painted). My wife asked them if she could carefully inspect the door before they removed our existing door and molding. Instead of heeding her wishes, they immediately proceeded to remove our door and tore out all of the molding ? shattering most of it as they worked. They said the new door was just fine, they had checked it, and they wanted to get moving on the task at hand. Once the molding was torn out, they retrieved the new door from their truck. To my wife?s astonishment, she saw that they had bored the hole for the door knob and notched hinges on the wrong side! Everything was set up in reverse, and ? obviously ? would not work. They had to put the door back on their truck and reconstruct the broken molding in order to re-hang our old door. We were very upset with this terrible mistake. When Mike learned what his crew had done, he was aghast and later came to our home to try to work it out. Mike offered to have his crew install all of our new hardware without any charge, and he also wanted to make a custom door for us at the same price. We felt this was a generous gesture, but all we wanted was a quality door and it didn?t need to be custom-made. We waited several months for the door to be completed. When it was finished, it was badly warped and rendered unusable because of higher than normal humidity. All of that waiting was for nothing. Mike then offered to salvage the original door by planing down the hinged side to reverse the hinges and then repainting each side to the correct specs. We were so tired of waiting ? it had now been about six months since we originally contracted with him, that we gave in to our own emotional exhaustion. Because of the original error, the door could only be hung with the inside out and the outside in, which you could tell by closely looking at the glass work. Additionally, when they installed the new door handle assembly, they mounted it slightly off of plumb. The painting and caulking performed after their installation was done very poorly requiring my wife to spend the next two days redoing the caulk, and spackling, sanding, and repainting to make it look like a quality paint job. On top of all this, we have a metal threshold that flexes up and down when you step on it. We believe it is bowed because it was cut too long for the opening. Mike blames it on the wood floor. Of course! This project was an ordeal from start to finish. Mike is a genuinely honest and decent guy who wants to do well, but unfortunately he didn?t. My wife is disgusted and angry every time she sees the crooked Baldwin door handle. Why couldn?t they at least have put the handle on straight, she repeatedly asks in sheer frustration. We can do nothing about that until many years from now when we repaint the entire door ? inside and out. We?ll have to live with this and other errors. Everything seemed to go awry on this project causing us a lot of stress and unhappiness. We ended up with a beautifully painted solid door with elegant concave and convex detailed moulding. Unfortunately, it is also a door that was rendered too short on the bottom rail and has an expensive door handle that was installed crooked as a finishing touch. Consequently, we would never use Mike again, I?m sincerely sorry to say.
