Coastal Kitchens & Baths Inc

Kitchen and Bath Remodeling, General Remodeling, Plumbing,

About us

*Call Direct - 949 583 1900* WE SPECIALIZE IN COMPLETE REMODELING PROJECTS WITH A MINIMUM COST OF $5,000. We are a team of skilled craftsmen each with many years of experience remodeling kitchens and baths in the Orange County area. At Coastal Kitchens Inc. instead of a showroom we use door style, finish and kitchen cabinet samples, as well as photo design books and CAD on laptops to display your kitchen as it is designed. This way we eliminate the need and the cost associated with a showroom business model. This makes the design process more convenient for our customers, and we pass the significant savings on to them as well. Our design process also allows us to spend more time working on our customer’s designs. This is what we enjoy most about our business and it is what makes the difference between an average and a great kitchen design. Why should I work with Coastal Kitchens Inc.? John (the owner) has 34 years of experience in the remodeling field along with his experienced team. Our top priority is ensuring you receive the highest value for your dollars. This means we will sometimes suggest less expensive options for some aspects of your kitchen to accommodate better investments for others. For example, we can often recommend a cabinet door style that will appear identical and cost substantially less leaving you more dollars for your overall renovation. One of our guiding principles at Coastal Kitchens Inc. is that the best investment in your kitchen is always your design first and your door style second. Exceeding expectations, but never your budget. Contact us through email at coastalkitchens@cox.net for faster response. Credit card purchases are welcome however we charge a small convenience fee.

Initially when they came to demolish, I had some dental work done. I was worried that it was going to be very noisy. I was very surprised that it was not noisy. They did the demolishing upstairs and one day. We were involved in the selections and they took my suggestions. They were very friendly (workers, designers and contractors) I had a very pleasant experience. I love the colors and design and all of the work that they did.
Description of Work: They demolished three bathrooms. In one bathroom there was a tub, they removed the tub, and installed a shower. They built a niche for soap in all bathrooms. They installed nice new tempered glass doors in all of the bathrooms. New tiles on the walls and floors. Put in new cabinets and granite countertops with new sinks and faucets in all bathrooms. Put in new lights and fixtures as well as new mirrors.

They did an excellent job. They were on time. They pay attention to details, and were very conscious in cleaning up. John was easy to contact. We had no problem getting in contact with him. The quality of work is above my expectations.

My point of this review was his arrogant, rude way of speaking to me, not what he could build. That was secondary! He came out to bid on my Custom cabinets when my cabinet maker dropped out due to unforeseen circumstances in middle of remodel. He told me I should do pre-made modular. When I said I wanted exactly what I want (my design and elevations/floor plans were already done, he was welcome to do his own drawings) - no fillers, no spaces - and asked how can you do that with modular - he kept saying "with my magic wand", "I have been in business for 33 years) .. I kept asking how he could do no spaces/filler with pre-built (for a 60 y/o kitchen) and he kept saying - " trust me", "I will give you $100 if I don't" , "my magic wand", "I will design the cabinets". I kept saying they were already designed and I wanted them built exactly to that design .. but he would not stop talking about HIS DESIGN! Overall he spoke to me like he thought I was some airhead woman! BAD ATTITUDE! I also asked him to confirm, before he came over, that I was available, I wrote And he told me, he confirmed last week in email and he did not understand what I meant about making sure I was home. "Teri Perlstein 6/20/2014 Please confirm with me Monday, I may have a conflict now. Trying to work out.Coastal Kitchens & Baths Inc 6/20/2014" HIS ANSWER: "6/20/2014 I have you scheduled for 7:30 pm this Monday." Obviously, he does not read/listen and pay attention to details. His cabinets may be great, but no way would I work with him.

Coastal Kitchens & Baths Inc 6/27/2014 [member name removed], We are able to design our modular cabinets to your specifications based on 1/8" increments for design flexibility. For example if the space requirement is 33 5/8" in width then we are able to create a cabinet 33 5/8" wide from our modular cabinet line. This will ensure that you have no fillers. The best way to explain how our modular and custom cabinets are designed and constructed is to show you the actual work from past clients. Let me know how I can earn your business. :-) Call me 949 583 1900.

Got an email response to my inquiry through Angie's list asking me to call John. Spoke to John on the phone regarding a master bathroom remodel. He was very up front asking me for the size of my home and letting me know the project was too small and did not meet his minimum of $10,000 in labor & I believe $5,000 to $6,000 in hard costs. It's really too bad these things were not stated on his Angie's listing, his website and his Yelp review. I took a lot of time investigating his business before I contacted John which was a waste of my time only to be told I was basically wasting his time.
Description of Work: Looking for a quote but got turned down because our home was not large enough & we would not meet his minimum.

John Bailey, sole proprietor and general contractor for Coastal Kitchens and Baths provided excellent advice throughout my project to renovate my house in Mission Viejo, CA to prepare it for sale. I relied on John's extensive knowledge of market trends and code requirements to guide me through the maze of home remodeling. He provided innumerable suggestions to appropriately upgrade the out-of-date aspects of the house but did not push me on any particular choice. I was able to select from his suggestions what made sense for my circumstances and budget. If a subconstractor failed to finish a project to his high standards, John would have it redone without additional charge. He kept tabs on numerous projects which were often running simultaneously and kept them moving expeditiously. He worked well in tandom with other contractors that I had hired. I had full confidence in his ability to provide good advice and follow through to implement my decisions. I believe that the pricing he gave me for the many projects that needed completion was very reasonable. I highly recommend John Bailey and Coastal Kitchens and Baths Inc. of Ladera Ranch for home remodeling.
Description of Work: bathroom remodeling (2.5 baths: granite countertops, sinks, cabinets, lighting, shower, tub, toilets, recessed lighting, fans, outlets, travertine flooring, mirrors and hardware), all new interior doors, all new closet doors, recessed lighting in all rooms, new outlets throughout, new chandelier, carpet upstairs and wood laminate downstairs, new front door and tansom, interior and exterior painting and new side garage door.

I would highly recommend John And Coastal Kitchens. We had a very good experience with our first remodel. John has very good ideas as well as the ability to listen. He is very pleasant to work with. I had to be out of town for two weeks during our complete kitchen remodel and John was great at keeping me informed as to the progress via the phone, texting and pictures. The quality of the work is great and the subcontractors John has working for him are professional, polite and punctual. John made frequent visits to the house to check on work and the work was done on time. We will definitely be using Coastal Kitchens for our future remodels.

A fitting broke on the internal connection for a rain shower head that had been installed approximately six months ago. John Bailey was extremely responsive and had his worker fix the problem in one day. It is great to have a contractor like John who stands behind the work he does for you. Good luck finding other contractors that are as responsive as John. We definitely would highly recommend him for kitchen and bathroom remodel jobs.

John Bailey (Coastal Kitchens) is an excellent contractor with an excellent reputation amongst all the various vendors I met with as I picked out hardware, tile and granite for my remodel. He was very patient with me as this was my first time doing any kind of a remodel. John uses excellent sub-contractors who cleaned up after themselves and who were very professional and friendly. I could not be more pleased with the end results of the remodel on my three bathrooms. John's attention to detail and making sure all the materials are on-site prior to beginning work shortens the time from project start to completion. I plan on using Coastal Kitchens again in the future when I begin a kitchen remodel. I found Coastal Kitchens on Angie's list and I am please that such a service exists.

There were a few hiccups during this remodeling project, but John (the owner) was very good at quickly correcting any problems that occurred. It is clear that the client's satisfaction with the work is a priority to him. John is very meticulous at ensuring that the work is done correctly. Sometimes triple checking work completed. Jose was the primary worker on the project and he is very good at a wide variety of construction tasks. The framing work is the best I have seen done. Jose is an incredibly good tile layer. We had a considerable amount of stone tile work including wainscoting and chair rail stone installed with this project. Some of it was done in a diagonal pattern that requires a considerable amount of cutting and proficiency to get it right and Jose's work was very, very good. He takes the necessary time to get it done right. The way John bids a job is basically for the labor that is required. While he provides recommendations, nearly all of the hardware purchases were our responsibility. I like this approach since you can get exactly what you want. We only had one disappointment and it was associated with the recessed shelves we wanted installed as part of the shower portion of the overall project. Apparently, there was a miscommunication between John and us on when we needed to let him know about these shelves. As a consequence, they did not get installed, but corner shelves were installed as an alternative. In the future, I would suggest that John develop a flow chart that depicts when decisions on various elements of a project need to be made and the client should sign off on each major step. That way it will better ensure that the client gets exactly what they want by the end of the project. We only had one significant problem during the work and it was associated with the painters tape that was used to secure cardboard protection to our hardwood entry and living room areas. While the tape was used in a manner that was consistent with the manufacture's description and instructions, the removal of the tape caused the lifting of the finish on the hardwood. John was very professional in assuming responsibility for this damage and has agreed to refinish the hardwood floors. Lesson learned from this experience is to never use painters tape on a hardwood floor for an extended time period regardless of what the manufacture says about their product. In the end, we now have two awesome bathrooms and I would give John an "A" for the work. It would have been an "A+" had we not had the recessed shelve issue in the shower. While we are very satisfied with the overall work, I particularly like the Kohler rainhead (KOHLER K-8030-CP) that we had installed in the shower. It is a somewhat costly addition (about $1k for hardware and installation labor) but it is really worth it. There are four independent heads that allow the direction of the spray to be adjusted for each. Each head has a flow rate of 2.5 gal. which produces an incredible flow for a quick rinse.
Description of Work: Complete remodeling of two bathrooms, including moving walls, relocating drains (shower, vanities, toilets), constructing a new shower, and all associated plumbing work. The shower also had a flush Kohler rainhead installed in the ceiling that required a labor intensive plumbing effort. The relocation of the drains required removing of a portion of the concrete floor slab, digging down to the main drain lines and a considerable amount of plumbing work.

Went very well. The workers were very quality oriented and careful in cleaning up after every day's work. The quality of the work was very high and the inconvenience of a remodeling was minimized. From the time of the estimate until job completion John ( owner ) was very responsive. The initial estimate was the lowest of all estimates received and it was a fair price. The one comment on price was the estimate was made for the minimum amount of work. Additional work that we later added was somewhat expensive but overall it was still lower than previous competitor estimates. Suggest that when request quote also request quote on possible additional options. Price did not include cost of fixtures, tiles, vanities, glass door or painting . John did recommend sources for the tiles and class door. We will definitely contact Coastal Kitchens& Baths for our next remodeling project.
Description of Work: Remodeling of a small Bathroom.Included demolition of old bathroom.New Bathroom included a shower stall and bench with tiles on full walls and floor, and a frameless glass door. Outside of shower stall installed new toilet ,vanity ,mirror and recessed lights. New tiles on floor and on walls ( up to 40" high on walls ) . Drywall and plumbing of all fixtures. All work approved by city inspector. Also upgraded master bathroom by installing tiles on wall, sconce lights and recessed lights. Also installed new vanities.

I live in New York and the work is been supervised by my family in California. I actually have not seen the final product. From the feedback I have received from my family COASTAL KITCHENS & BATHS INC has done a good job. My younger sister who happened to live with me in New York and who is back in California did an inspection. She is the one who designed the whole thing as she wanted it done. She reported to me that there was a drawer missing from a cabinet or something missing from one of the cabinet. It was not based on what we had agreed. So they had to come back and redo it. There were a lot of back and forth and there was some frustration with the way he communicated. It was not the way we would have wanted it be. He couldn’t come out when he said he would. It was a little bit more complicated. My little sister and I who coordinated this project do not live in California so we have been communicating by e-mail only. When the work actually started we had assigned another sister there to coordinate the local work. The owner of this Company was not as responsive to her despite us telling him that and giving her authority that whatever she feels is right. I do not know if he was not responsive to her because she was not available. So for the work where he actually did not come, he called last minute saying he cannot come. The reasons were sort of legitimate that could have been notified earlier. So there was a lot of frustration on that end and for my sister to coordinate the work from that side. I was told that the actual work was done well. Price wise I have nothing to compare them by. Honestly I do not know because for the lack of time I have not done much research. I have to do further research to see if price wise and quality wise I may consider him to do further projects. At the end of the day it is the quality of the work is what really matters to me.

This project went very well; it was my first experience with a renovation and I'd heard a lot of horror stories over the years about how awful the experience could be - not to mention expense overruns. I found John's company on Angie's List; he was one of three contractors I interviewed, and I made up my mind to use him almost immediately. He was very thorough on the first appointment and very clear on costs for labor versus hard goods. He even spent an entire day shopping with me, where we found awesome prices on beautiful granite and sinks, thanks to his knowledge of the State College stores. He was able to supply cabinetry (vanities, mirrors) that was very well priced and of beautiful quality! He did not try to steer my choices but instead listened to what I wanted, then guided me through the choices I could make so that I could stay in budget and end up with what I was looking for. He made some great suggestions but didn't force anything on me, which was one of my fears. His #2 person Jose showed up every day with a smile, and did wonderful work, always cleaning up at the end of the day so I didn't have to face a mess. John was always available by phone or text whenever I had a question or concern. He was respectful, and very nice to work with. This was a great experience and I LOVE my bathrooms! They are EXACTLY what I wanted and I was able to manage the cost with John's help. I would highly recommend John Bailey / Coastal Kitchens & Baths to anyone who is thinking of a bathroom or kitchen renovation.
Description of Work: I hired Coastal Kitchens / John Bailey to perform a master bath renovation. After discussions I decided to renovate the guest bath as well. John and his trusty sidekick Jose did everything either themselves or with a helper or another service expert. I had a limited budget and knew what I wanted; John was fantastic about listening to me and guiding me to potential options, then letting me decide what I wanted and making sure I would know what the cost would be. On time every day, clean and neat, and no delays.

Coastal Kitchen came to the house and worked with us to provide three design plans for the remodel of the kitchen and bathroom. Once the design was finalized it took several weeks to find all the appliances and hardware. Coastal Kitchen provided an appliance engineer who delivered the appliances and ran checks on them to ensure everything was working properly before they were to be installed. Upon completion of that process, demolition of the kitchen and bathroom took place. The team that demo'd the kitchen, did a wonderful job. They tarped off the adjoining rooms and cleaned as they went. They were very thoughtful that we were living in the house during construction. Once the old cabinets were gone, small structural changes took place, soffitts were removed, vents were relocated, waterlines were put in and electrical was added. During the same time, cabinets were being put together and getting ready for installation. Each person working on their part of the job, the wood craftsman, electrician, appliance engineer, drywallers, painters, granite installers, etc. were extremely polite and punctual. They respected my home and my family. They worked first on the bathroom to get us a working sink in our downstairs. The process is long with small children in the house, but one that was do-able( 71/2 weeks from demo to finish). We had a couple of areas that were a bit sticky, but we worked through them and came to workable solutions. (ex: cabinet height to ceiling, toe kick finish and sink width) Coastal Kitchens worked very hard to make sure we were satisfied with all solutions. The custom paint finish was a smelly process, but we were happy with the finished results. Overall, our experience was a good one with this company.

Although remodels are never easy to go through, this one went remarkably smooth! John quoted the job as "labor and soft parts only" ($15,000), which meant that I was responsible for purchasing all of the major components of the bathroom (counter tops, tile, sinks, toilet, etc.) This worked very well. I could spend as much (or as little) as I wanted to spend. So, the project started off with John spending an entire Saturday shopping with me. I am so thankful to him for doing that. He provided excellent guidance and exhibited a lot of patience while I made my choices. We ended up finding tile that was on sale for a great price. John was as excited about the tile as I was! John was full of ideas on ways to make my bathroom really wonderful. Once the job started, it moved right along. Workers were always there as scheduled. They were very respectful, and clean. John came to check on progress regularly and provided specific instructions to the workers. I loved the fact that John was pickier than I was! Little issues that I would have probably never noticed were caught by John and corrected immediately. I am thankful to have found John on Angie's List. The bathroom turned out better than I had imagined. John was responsive and easy to get along with. I would recommend him to anyone planning to do a similar project!
Description of Work: I hired Coastal Kitchens to do a major overhaul of my Master Bathroom. John from Coastal Kitchens first provided me with detailed drawings of the proposed master bath remodel, and then we picked out the tile, fixtures, and cabinets using John's sources. The remodel consisted of the following: demo and same day haul away, reconfigure double door walk in closet to single door, enlarge shower stall, install new vanity with slab granite counters, two new exhaust fans, new electrical circuits, new outlets, recessed lights, permits, water closet, and clear frameless glass shower door, all new fixtures. Some aspects of the job that made John stand out from other contractors were as follows: John waited until all material was on site before starting the job which meant I had a functioning master bath for as long as possible. The shower stall was hot mopped and both this and the floor were floated in using wire mesh and cement. The base board was created out of floor tile. The frameless glass door was embedded into the shower tile instead of using metal brackets.

We chose pre-fabricated granite slabs with standard bull-nose edge; therefore the good cost. The extra seams required by pre-fab are tricky and require superb craftsmanship. And that's what John Bailey of Coastal Kitchen & Bath provided. I'm so pleased to have encountered a core of honest craftsmen who did quality, professional kitchen/bath upgrades to my home. This contractor and craftsmen did fabulous work: competitively priced, on-time, per agreement, high-end quality work and good clean-up ... and no lying or exaggeration. (Even though it's been an ordeal for me, it would have been far worse if I had to chase down incompetency.)
Description of Work: Installation of pre-fabricated granite counter tops. Cost included demo (old hookups uninstall) and haul away; new sink and faucets install & hookup; dishwasher hookup; 1-1/2" bull nose edge (standard on pre-fabs), sealer, 6" splash, 4 seams, patching. Did not include: wall painting, sink/faucet/etc. purchase, or cabinet refinish. Job completed in two days: day#1 for demo/install; day#2 for plumbing hookups.

John is very customer and quality oriented. He wants you to be happy with your project when he's done. He did a lot of research helping me find the vanity and front doors I wanted. John and his guys were great to work with and he kept the job moving!!!
Description of Work: Removed existing master bath: vanity top, base, sinks, faucets, mirrors, lighting, toilet, plumbing, and tub/shower (including the very heavy cast iron tub). Drywalled in existing door opening for closet. Opened drywall and framed a new closet door on a different wall. Moved a wall 18" to allow for a more expansive shower. Installed new wall-mount toilet (required special carrier and plumbing in wall). Formed and wet mopped new shower. Tiled floor and walls of shower. Installed new glass wall for shower. All new plumbing and fixtures. Installed and made necessary adjustments to vanity. All new plumbing and fixtures, electrical [including can lights and sconces]. Cut out and framed opening then installed 2 recessed medicine cabinets. Hung and cased 3 new doors. Installed new double front doors. Required reframing the opening and stucco and drywall repair. Installed precast concrete hearth and mantle for fireplace.

Finally, a contractor that is detail oriented, demands above quality work from his subcontractors, is fairly priced and easy to work with! Having been through three kitchen and now two master bath remodels, (along with building a new home) we’ve experienced a lot in the world of construction. John Bailey, owner of Coastal Kitchens exemplifies the type of contractor that we respect and would definitely hire again. No job is without problems but we believe that John’s approach to the install minimized issues thus our remodel was within budget, on time and relatively painless. We chose to have CK quote us a cost for all labor as listed in "services performed". ($15,000.00 was the total labor cost.) We could then control remaining costs by purchasing the materials ourselves. John was always willing to offer suggestions. He always reviewed our selections before we made a purchase to ensure that it would work in the space, avoiding returns thus saving time and money. John waited until most of the materials were on site before starting demolition. During the install, he constantly checked and rechecked work. He even tested the bathtub functionality before it was installed! By choice, we were hands-on clients and this was respected. Open communication was encouraged, invaluable during the install. Phone calls and texts were answered within a timely manner. We did not have one day of install downtime unless it was by our request. We asked to include some additional work outside the scope of the project. It was completed at an additional cost but within the same time-frame! I feel that a special mention be made of the subs on our job. All were hard working professionals concerned that the job be done to our satisfaction. The result was a high quality remodel completed on time and within budget. For future construction in our home, Costal Kitchens gets our call!
Description of Work: Demolition, drywall, framing, electrical, plumbing, tiling, granite fabrication and installation of: cabinets, vanity mirrors, plumbing fixtures, sliding mirrored glass doors, an absolute frame-less glass shower surround, a closet system, one bathroom window, one water closet door and bathroom hardware (towel racks, hooks etc.)

Project moved along efficiently from design to completion. The job was staged and materials ordered and ready to go prior to any demo work. Demo completed in two days and new cabinets installed within three weeks. Two weeks of constant work without interruption got the project off to a great start. The cabinet, counter and flooring subcontractors were superb. Quick installation of plumbing and appliances helped ease inconvenience.
Description of Work: Total kitchen, powder bath and family room redesign and remodel including movement of walls, upgrade of electrical system, new cabinets, appliances, flooring. ,
