Description of Work: Extremely frustrating experience. He took months and we never got any specific design or bid for what we would be getting for our money. The job was his to lose. We signed a contract and then proceeded to spend a lot of time talking but we never learned what exactly we would be getting. We finally cut our loses. Suggestion: Do not sign an agreement until you get his bid! (We should have known better!)

Description of Work: Jon did a great job with the kitchen. At first it was a little slow going since I was the landlord and not in the same city. He worked very well with me. I took a trip out to meet with Jon and he understood what my budget was. He did work with me and came down to $35K for the work; however I had to buy all appliances/fixtures myself. What was a surprise to me was then I was responsible to get rid of all boxes from these appliance since he did not have to buy them. I thought it a little odd since since he has a disposal container on the premises. I was very pleased with his work. When I had my tenant bring up some of the issues which needed to be fixed, he took care of it right away. He and his team are true professionals. I would hire him again.

His work was of high quality and he supervised the sub-contractors carefully. He stayed within the budget. We are very pleased had can recommend him highly.

Description of Work: Jon Hammer and all the craftsmen working with him as San Diego Master Craftsmen are professional in every regard. He stayed on budget, and on schedule. He was agreeable to discuss progress, and congenial in all regards.He only uses the very best craftsmen as team members, and we were always well pleased with how the work progressed.They always respected our privacy, and never once let the cat outside (of utmost importance to us). They never left trasharound after their job was done. Any items purchased were agreed upon ahead of the project. We are glad to have had the work done by Jon and his crew. We wholeheartedly recommend San Diego Master Craftsmen w/o any reservation.We're planning on using them again for additional work in our home.

He spent almost two hours here understanding the work and sent us his inputs. I haven’t got back to him yet. He was forthright. He had some ideas on what to do. It seemed like he was open and honest about the whole deal. He worked with my schedule, which was excellent. I would recommend this company with what ever little experience I’ve had so far. I haven’t followed thorough with them or haven’t asked for a quote yet. I would consider using them in the future.
Description of Work: San Diego Master Craftsmen Company provided me with their inputs on getting my bathroom remodeled some time in early April.

+ 1 moreJon Hammer helped me through a difficult time I was having with another general contractor who was very unresponsive. I had begun design work with his designer so we continued with that firm. Jon is very easy to work with. If problems arose he handled them with professionalism. We flew through inspections with little or no problems. Anytime I called with a question or request he returned my calls promptly. I had always had a problem with flooding/drainage in the yard but he put in new drainage pipe and sloped the yard to direct the water into the drains. Even with as much rain as we had this winter the new system worked perfectly. Jon is well liked and respected by his sub-contractors. My sunroom addition with bathroom turned out beautifully.
Description of Work: I added a 210 ft. sunroom, including a bathroom to my home.

He was very informative; he provided a daily update. Schedule-wise, Jon lined everything up well with the sub-contractors. The work and cleanup by all was high quality. He is recommended by me.
Description of Work: Replaced wall and floor tile and bathtubs in 2 bathrooms, improved sub flooring, and incorporated ducting for HVAC. The work was started in January and finished end of February. It was done in serial so we always had a functioning bathroom. Plus the Kohler shower unit had a 6 week lead-time.

+ 0 moreWe decided to add a new backyard bathroom to our home, utilizing a space underneath an existing balcony. We ended up hiring Jon, who went on to exceed all expectations. He is a truly outstanding contractor who really cares about his work. In the beginning phase of the project, he was quite thorough in making sure that the project was well defined and scoped properly. My wife and I are not too experienced with remodeling, and Jon was very patient with all of our questions. It was quite clear that he was there to build to our vision (and budget) , rather than trying to impose his own design preferences. The care he took at the beginning really was critical in making the project the success it was. Construction went very smoothly. There were several instances where I noticed Jon going above and beyond, paying attention to little details that would probably escape most peoples attention. When it came to the contractors, Jon was very effective in making sure everything stayed coordinated, giving us frequent updates as to what they were doing, when they were showing up, etc. The contractors themselves I found to be first-rate and very professional. His was not the cheapest bid, but I thought it was really the most honest one in terms of accuracy and thoroughness, and the end result validated this. Overall, the project ended up with no cost overruns or surprises. Finally, and most importantly, the bathroom and new concrete are beautiful, and we are extremely happy with the end result. We will without a doubt hire Jon for any future remodeling work that we may do.
Description of Work: Added a new full bathroom opening to backyard, in a space at the rear of house underneath an existing balcony. Also rebuilt our backyard concrete to correct a number of problems with the old slab.

They have done a great job with the cleanup and making sure the left over metal hanger on the ground that was attached to the wall will be safe for kids. We will definitely use them again fro future projects.

Used environmentally safe products. Arranged to have every possible part of my old cabinetry, appliances, lighting, and furniture donated to charity - and I got the tax deduction. Gave me a Time Frame for every step in the process and stayed within or FINISHED AHEAD of Schedule! Provided me with a microwave and my working refrigerator in the garage so I could stay in my house and live comfortably. All this in less than 2 months. Kept my house CLEAN EVERY DAY - REALLY. I LOVED working with Jon and his professional, respectful corp or sub-contractors. His attention to detail, quality work and high expectations for himself and all those who work for him are reflected in my beautiful home.
Description of Work: Kitchen: total remodel floor to ceiling - gutting the existing kitchen, flooring, ceiling, lighting and putting in wood flooring, custom cabinets with energy efficient under-mount lighting, a matching custom desk, low VOC quartz counter-top, stainless steel appliances, recessed lighting, custom ceiling and NO/Low VOC paint. Family Room/Dining Room: adjoining rooms also gutted floor to ceiling (including new light fixture) with the same, seamless quality and attention to detail. Bathroom: adjoining bathroom ceiling (including new light fixture), walls and flooring. I did not choose to replace cabinets nor commode. Living Room: Lower level, adjoining living room and entry way and all stairways leading to the basement: Floor to ceiling with new light fixtures. Upgraded to Tankless Water Heater and brought my electrical panel up to code Moved my furniture down to the garage and back up before and after remodel. Fixed leaks that were found.

His attention to detail, honesty and follow through made the entire process simple, easy and convenient. The extra money I spent going with him ended up working out very well for us. The lack of problems, timely completion and honesty made it all worthwhile.
Description of Work: Jon Hammer is by far the most responsive craftsman I have ever met in my entire life. I had a few other bids that were less expensive but upon examination and questioning of the details NONE of the others had included for the items that were in Jon's bid to me. The way Jon explained it is that he does not come in with a ridiculously low-ball offer and then slam you with a change order to the project. I have had this experience in the past where I ended up paying way more in either repairs, rework or hassle. Personally I want to get the most honest and upfront pricing so I can budget for my project. I had previously had a bathroom remodeled by a different contractor and only later did we discover wiring that was spliced in the walls. The only reason this ever came up was because they had used the wrong materials and we had to cut open the drywall to remove the mold. Jon was able to complete our expansive kitchen remodel and also repair the previous bathroom disaster. He uses extremely good subcontractors. Fidelity Electric fixed the illegal wiring and his drywall and tile people were also top notch. Overall his suggestions ended up saving me a lot of money. My kitchen looks great, the granite, custom cabinetry and lighting all make it spectacular when people come over for dinner. I absolutely love my custom wine bar! Everything was completed in a timely manner with very few headaches overall. Just the fact that I was able to get custom lighting and cabinetry was so much better than what Home Depot tried to sell me. Instead of particle board I have tongue in groove cabinetry with soft close hardware. Thanks for all of the great help Jon! We recommend you to all of our friends and neighbors every time we have a dinner party at our house.

+ -1 moreFirst, let me say that although Jon himself is a marvelous craftsman, one of his best attributes is his concern for getting some of the best subcontractors. Mike Simpson (his plumber) and Fidelity Electric (Roger being the owner and craftsman there, I believe), never seemed to forget they were serving me, not getting business from him, and they did splendid jobs. However, I would also say that Jon, throughout the entire project, was most concerned with doing the best job; and seemed to enjoy most when I let him show me his best work. It was not that he did not offer more economical options, and assured me that any choice would be acceptable, and handsome, but his honesty and descriptive explanations left me with quality choices that are desirable to those who are changing their house for themselves (rather than fixes meant to flip a house). Overall, his efforts have left me with a remodel that will last, and I of which I shall be proud in years to come. Although a garage conversion, he has crafted me a walk in pantry that seems like it was made for the space (and far more elegant than the back end of a garage), and a library to kill (and die) for.
Description of Work: Jon helped me organize and complete a full remodel and conversion of a garage space into a walk-in pantry and a library. In the process of this remodel, he replaced a window, a firedoor, did the full install on a set of swing-out carriage style garage doors (they look fabulous), finished all the walls, installed linear feet of bookshelves, managed a gorgeous tiling job, re-arranged my major appliances via wiring and plumbing, and oversaw the rewiring of most of my house (due to some archaic and badly wired circuitry - see other my other reviews of my heroes at, Fidelity, who he recommended to fix those issues).

He arrived on time and as scheduled for the duration of the project; not just when it came time to bid or collect money. He is a "Class Act". I would recommend him to any friend, family member or colleague - he's that good.
Description of Work: Jon and his team renovated a portion of our older home in Normal Heights, which included dropping the kitchen floor to accommodate a new and better design flow through the old cramped space. They built a new set of stairs leading to a new walk-through pantry (also creating usable and valuable working space off the garage). He also gutted the back spare room (conversion) and created a new master bedroom - beautiful.
