Description of Work: Installed new air conditioning system in downstairs of two story home about 36 months after installing new system in upstairs. Purchased upgrades from base system. Expected system to be smooth, efficient and quiet. Instead, system has functioned but has made loud noises and has not been great in performance. Warranty calls done timely and without charge, without complaint, but system has never met expectations. When inspected upstairs system I was told major duct work needed even though they didn't advise of the need when they installed the upstairs system.

They came and did the work and they seemed very honest. They misdiagnosed some things and we had to pay some extra money to get second and third opinions. It turned to be incorrect. Even on our A/c, they told us that we had some certain size of A/c and did lot of things for that and finally it was a wrong size. It was something that they should have known. I was not happy with them. I would not use them again in the future.

* Recently, we requesed the recycle certificate of our units to receive our California rebate of $2,000 and Kalka's owner and manager would not return our phone calls. We asked respectfully which is more than we ever got! This after providing terrible service AND their attempt to bait & switch us (charge more for lesser product). They were asked to haul away units after their poor service because they planned to just leave them in our driveway. There were absolutely no telephone calls, emails or correspondence of any kind. It was horrible. The beginning of the process went very well. A few weeks ago we spent $3,000 on some major plumbing work--which went very well. This time around, they promised us a Ruud air conditioner, and they brought a lower quality system. They would never provide us a quote, only an overall charge without a line-by-line receipt. They left dirt marks all the way down my carpet where they had slid something. They also didn't clean up after themselves, leaving debris all over the carpet. They were originally supposed to have an active air conditioner for our upstairs. We were sold one thing and they delivered another. They got blood in the living room, kitchen, and all along the outer edge of my home where they were working. They were rinsing something outside and used a lot of water--it was still clearly in my yard for hours after they left. The owner finally called my husband and disagreed that it was blood on the ground. He suggested that he could get a a different type of system--we asked for a 16 seer system and they gave us a 14.5 seer. They sent out someone out to clean up the blood, and he was a half hour late, rude, and he claimed that it must have been the dog. My dog is 11 years old, and I checked my dog out to make sure that it wasn't in fact her. That man wanted me to sign a form saying that everything was taken care of, to which I wouldn't sign as they were trying to turn the situation into something totally different. After fifteen minutes, we had to ask him to leave, because he was so rude. After he finally left, it was so late that we had to go to a hotel for the night because it was close to 95 degrees in my house. Today they came and removed their things. They were a half hour late again today. The company they used to haul away their stuff parked so close to my car that a sneeze would have scratched it. The owner of the company also lied and told me that he was at my home when he was not, I know this as my daughter and I were here when he claimed to be. All I really want is for them to fix the issue, and not have to deal with this company again.
Description of Work: They delivered two air conditioners. They installed one, and removed old units. P.S. their complaint about man hours was paid by taking the money for our old units. This is not a truthful response from them.

Response from Kalka Heating & Air Conditioning Inc
This note is in direct response to your stated dispute you placed on Angie’s List this past 26th of August, 2010. I have tried to address your comments and concerns directly. First, all of the furnaces and air conditioners delivered to the property were in fact Ruud manufactured products. Our supplier delivered one of the Ruud system components with a WeatherKing label rather than the Ruud label. However, the manufacturer assured us that the WeatherKing and Ruud systems are identical. They are sending a letter regarding the labeling of their products directly to the homeowner. Additionally, the representative will be contacting the homeowner directly as well regarding this matter. Regarding the SEER rating of the units, we provided a 16 SEER system as stipulated in our contract. The outdoor unit (condenser) can be used and set up to have a SEER rating of 14.5 to 17 depending upon the equipment attached to it. We achieved a 16 SEER rating by installing a matching evaporator coil and air handler. Further, we can prove that this equipment also qualified for the Federal Tax Credit which requires a 16 SEER or better system. The SEER rating is a measurement of power usage during the air conditioning operation only. As to the quotes provided for the HVAC system, our sales person had supplied several options and various manufacturers over the phone. Once the homeowner made a decision to go with Ruud, we furnished them with the model numbers of the equipment we were to install, as requested by the homeowner. Further, prices were given for each individual system and separate pricing was given for indoor air quality filters (IAQ). As we were installing the system as requested by the customer, they requested a change-order. They wanted us to add a high-efficiency air purification system which was a special-order item. We therefore could not leave one of the systems operational overnight, as we needed the IAQ system integrated in place with the rest of the system. The customer complained about the lack of having AC overnight, so we agreed to make a temporary connection of one system at no additional charge, to provide them with some comfort for the evening. We dispatched a technician at 6:00 p.m. that same evening to perform the temporary hookup. After my installer arrived, I received a message to call the customer. I called them and they complained that there was blood, “…all over the house.” This was quite a surprise to me. I immediately offered to send out an emergency restoration company to review and perform a cleanup. I selected 24 Hour Restoration, a company we have worked with before. They are certified for crime scene cleanup, so I thought they would be the best choice. I then called all employees who had been on the property that day and inquired about possible workplace injuries. All employees denied having been injured in any way. I even went so far as to inspect them the following day for cuts and/or abrasions and found none. The company I hired to clean up the blood took photos of what they found. They were unsure if it was blood or not and were going to take a sample to determine if it was in fact blood and whether or not it was human or animal. The customer did not want them taking samples, nor did they want the “blood” cleaned up and promptly asked the restoration company to leave. In his telephone debriefing with me, the restoration technician’s impression of the stains was that they likely came from a small animal, like a dog with a cut paw. He said the patterns and small amounts of “blood” were consistent with a small dog with a small cut on a paw. Our own installer was asked to leave as well and did so at 8 p.m. With regard to the stains on the carpet, I personally arrived at 3:06 p.m. on August 25, 2010 to deliver the equipment originally ordered for the job. Some of the equipment was to be installed in the attic. I assisted in getting the equipment into the attic. We had covered the flooring with tarps to prevent damage and stains. All equipment was hand carried up the stairs and no hand truck or dolly was required. Our equipment never touched their floors. In my conversation with the homeowner, I was accused of lying about my being on the job site. I advised the homeowner to check with the guard gate. I still have my copy of the guest pass which is time/date stamped, as well as having recorded my license plate number. According to the satellite tracking system on my truck, I left the job site at about 4:00 p.m. I have tallied the number of man-hours we have invested on this job as documented by our truck tracking systems as well. We have also reclaimed the entire old refrigerant from both of the old AC’s and turned it in to be recycled in accordance with the law. We removed 2 furnaces, 2 evaporative coils and 2 condensers, as well as having delivered all new equipment to the job site. We flushed out four refrigerant lines, using approved materials and procedures to allow for the use of an ozone-friendly R410-A refrigerant. We had already completed over 40% of the work required, by the time we were asked to leave. As for water being used at the outside hose bib or spigot, our workers are in an attic working in temperatures that can exceed 140°F. It was also over 100°F outside that day. These technicians are working hard, not sitting around in lounge chairs. It is customary and acceptable to cool themselves off using tap water from outside a home. Lastly, my sales person advised me that prior to my conversation with the homeowner, he had spoken with the homeowner regarding complaints about the job. My sales person had offered to discount the job by about $300.00 to show good faith. The homeowner responded to my sales person stating, “You must think I’m F---ing stupid! This is worth a lot more than that!” In my conversation with the homeowner, I was repeatedly bombarded with threats from the homeowner to “destroy (my) on-line reputation” and with a prolific use of profanity by the homeowner. In closing, I think it is clear to any would-be customer or client of ours, that this particular case is an anomaly from an errant person who clearly is not in touch with the facts and simply fills in with fabrications. It is obvious to anyone that we have an outstanding rating and we clearly take care of our customers, pride ourselves in our work ethic and stand behind our service.

Everything about this outfit is positive, down to the booties they slip over their shoes before they enter your house. Thomas took the time to explain and show me what had gone wrong with my 19 year-old a/c and what they could and should do to either repair or replace it. He gave me a very fair price on the replacement unit. Dominic, who actually performed the replacement, was just as personable, courteous, punctual and professional as Thomas. They performed the work and removed/recycled the old unit efficiently and to my complete satisfaction.

They were very good and thorough but they told us we had to replace our furnace because it was over 20 years old. We had someone else come out and they said that there was a little bit of rust but we would still be able to get some use out of it. I really like them a lot but I think they err on the side of caution and they didn?t apply their work to our particular financial circumstances. They didn?t do anything wrong but we weren?t able to do what they recommended and the other company told us that it wasn?t as bad as Kalka made it seem.

Thomas arrived early. He put on booties before he entered the house. He had a professional toilet auger and really had to work hard on the toilet before it would flush properly. Then he went to the tank less water heater and took apart some seals and un-did the shower head that had no pressure and removed a bent water saver (this bathroom is less than a year old). He was friendly and competent. My mother was appalled that fixing a toilet could cost $133 but I know everything is expensive these days. There is hot water in every bathroom and the water pressure is great.
Description of Work: Upstairs toilet was stuffed and Takagi water heater was not supplying enough hot water or pressure.
