Since it is now the 'Great Recession' I was actually able to get 5 bids. They were the lowest bid and said they wanted the work. Because it was the lowest bid, I was a little concerned, especially when another bidder said it couldn't be done for the price quoted. That said, I made sure I got all the extras; a steel insert in the header beam, a 'stiffened' ledger board, etc. Both the estimator and the construction manager were 'senior' guys who seemed to be knowledgeable. They were able to accommodate all my requests. The estimator was the only one of the 5 bids that actually took the time to dig a hole in the dirt next to my brick patio to see if there was a concrete slab under the brickwork (for the patio cover footing). They were also accommodating in how they built the cover. I wanted the rafters to be hidden by the header beam instead of on top of the header beam as is usually done. They were the only one of the 5 companies who listened to what I wanted and accommodated my request. There was an initial delay of about 9 days due to a delay in getting the alumawood materials from the manufacturer. There were 2 problems that occurred during the actual construction. The workers were a little sloppy at first in placing the brackets for the rafters. When I pointed out to them that the brackets weren't lined up perfect they re-drilled the holes for some of the brackets to ensure that the latticework would be completely hidden by the header beam. The other problem was that some of my brickwork on the patio was destroyed when they removed the 2 old concrete footings/posts. I offered to replace the destroyed 6 bricks if they would remove them and fill in a level concrete base. They did not bring concrete with them the last day of the job, so I did not know if they would call back the next week, after they completed the patio cover. My husband did the concrete base over the weekend instead of them, but I was glad that the construction manager did call the next work day on Monday to offer to do the concrete base for the new 6 bricks. Overall a very good experience for the price paid.
Description of Work: Replaced a 8' X 18' Wood Patio Cover with a new Alumawood Patio Cover. They also removed two old concrete footings and hauled away the old patio cover.
