Century is one of a handful of providers who will do both the solar and roof systems as one responsible entity. I met with Tony Diaz and was impressed by his knowledge of roofing systems (he was able to easily identify the manufacturer and approximate year of installation of our damaged cement tile roof) and the PV solar system. Tony was happy to provide full specifications and details for the entire solar system - from panels to inverters to the control system - and to offer his insights into the various PV manufacturers and likely technological advancements he expected to see come out over the next few years. He knows his business and was happy to have a couple of face to face meetings with me before I gave him the business. The project itself went very smoothly and was completed on time. During tear off the crew found dry-rotted roof panels that had to be replaced. Fortunately, since Century gives you a fixed price list for typical "unexpected" repairs, there were no worries that we were being gouged or taken advantage of. The roofers left the property clean and safe. The solar system was installed a couple of weeks after the roof. Tony sized the system based on our typical usage. Rather than sizing a solution for 100% of our expected usage, Tony proposed a system that would move our PG&E purchases into the lowest price tier. That's a smart strategy because at tier 1 prices the PV panels are not cost effective. And you can always add panels if you feel you need them later. Tony took care of all the PG&E interconnect paperwork and made the transition very easy for us. Initially the system was not communicating with the control hub and we were not seeing production statistics on the web site. Century traced the problem to a power line communications issue and installed a dedicated outlet that fixed the problem. They were kind enough to do this without any additional charge. Century was not the lowest cost bidder but I'm usually willing to pay for service and quality. From that perspective I think Century was a great value and I'd recommend them without reservation.
Description of Work: Tear off of old cement tile roof. Repair of dry-rotted roof plywood and other damaged roof components. Installation of new composite roof, gutters, and gutter screens. Installation of a whole-house fan. Installation of ~4.3kW capacity solar roof system. Installation of new electrical panel needed to support the solar system.

I know most people that don't think it's necessary to take the time to write a review when a service has been provided to the customers expectations. Others may want to write a review to vent when thoses services are not provided as expected. I, one the other hand , would like to express my extreme satisfaction with the job Century Roofing and Solar provided re-roofing my house. Tony Diaz, company consultant, was very precise in explaining to my wife and me about what to expect when the job started. He came to our house completely prepared to discuss the proceedures, materials, and the time it would take. Everything he promised was exactly what we got....great looking new roof, terrific clean up after the job , and a very competitive price. Call Tony if you need a new roof. Be prepared to receive a thorough presentation of what it takes to do the job right and on time. Tony's quite a guy. He knows his stuff, that's for sure !!! Gary

The entire job, new roof and downspouts took about 5 days. All Century Roof crews were extremely professional. I remained in my house during all phases of roof removal and replacement. All crew members were quiet and professional. They proceeded in a very dedicated and determined manner in taking care of their responsibilities whether it was the tear off crew or the installation crew. When I dealt with them personally all were polite, personable, professional and responsive. They worked very quietly. I rarely heard much noise even while they were removing the old roof. My only real concern was how much, if any, dry rot they would find. You never know what you will find until the roof is removed and one may find that much work needs to be done that had not been anticipated. Fortunately only a small amount of dry rot was found totaling $500. I considered myself fortunate. Century Roofing repair rates are thoroughly listed in the contract for your examination before signing. Tony unilaterally decided to use a thicker higher quality underlayment than the original specifications dictated. They also custom made metal roof trim as the industry standard metal trim currently available was not the same as originally used on my roof so they custom made it to fit correctly. At the end of the job I went up top and looked at the complete job. I was very impressed. The seaming of the IB roof system sheets was high quality. Where adjacent sheets met at the corner, they also put a seal at the intersection of the corners. Lastly they did very thorough cleanup. In conclusion, I was highly satisfied in every way. I made the right choice in selecting Century Roof and Solar and would recommend them, without hesitation to any body in need of a new roof. All persons associated with Century Solar were a pleasure to deal with and delivered on every committment and then some.
Description of Work: I own a Craftsman Bungelow built in the early 1920's . When I purchased it (1981) the seller put on a new roof over the preexisting roof. It had a life expectancy of probably 20 years. I had recently seen signs of roof leakage on the ceiling interior and made one external repair. I had been out of state about 9-11 months per year during the past six years as this problem developed. When I returned full time in December 2011 it was clear I needed a new roof for the 2012 rainy season as my roof was now 30 years old and showing signs of leakage. I researched Angie's List, Diamond Certified Directory (Alameda), Bay Area Consumers Checkbook and Yelp to identify local roofing companies that were the highest rated by their customers. I narrowed it down to three companies to solicit bids. Diamond Certified was the most helpful source in this winnowing process. I contacted three firms to include Century Roof and Solar, Peterson Dean and General Roofing (Oakland). I did not want a new tar and gravel roof but rather the latest material development instead. I figured 30 years after the old roof there should be a new technology to replace a tar & gravel roof. Tony (owner) of Century Solar offered a roof using IB Roof systems 80 mill white membrane. Plus he could match the original square steel downspouts. Peterson Dean also offered an IB Roof system using 50 mil white membrane that was significantly thinner than the IB membrane used by Century and at a somewhat higher cost. I also wanted the downspouts replaced. They were original to the house, a square design and contoured to the different surface levels of the exterior. Peterson Dean could only provide the type of downspouts you get from Home Depot i..e. aluminim that have crimped sides. Century Solar was able to provide identical to original steel prepainted downspouts. I also got a bid from General Roofing (Oakland). General also offered IB system but also offered an asphalt shingle alternate solution at a lower price. But who ever I choose I wanted to choose the IB system as a better technical life long solution even though it would cost a bit more. I ultimately chose Century Roof and Solar because their bid was the least cost of the three , plus IB membrane thickness was greater than what Peterson Dean offered and Century Roofing could provide downspouts that matched the original, which neither Peterson Dean or General could do. Century Solar removed old roofs (layers), removed and repaired some minor dry rot, installed IB 80 mil white membrane plus steel pre-painted downspouts.

Excellent Installation and Service! See description above for complete details. Note that the approximate amount noted above for both the roof and solar installation is prior to Federal Tax Rebate for the solar PV installation.
Description of Work: Century Roof & Solar installed a new solar PV system and roof on our home. We looked at only the highest rated contractors…and Century was at the top end of the spectrum…that is why they were the first company to interview. ROOF: The existing roof was an original shake roof (well over 30 years old). Since we needed to re-roof this year (Summer 2012), we figured now would be the time to look into solar. First, we reviewed the various roof options including metal, tile, shake and fiberglass asphalt composition roofing. We decided to specify new 15/32” CDX plywood sheathing over the entire roof area/ 1x6 wood sleepers, GAF Lifetime Designer Shingles; custom fireplace/ chimney cricket w/ backing; GAF Snow Country Ridge Vent, New prepainted seamless gutters and downspouts, replace fascia/ rake boards, GAF Deck Armor, GAF Storm Guard Leak Barrier; starter shingles and GAF Ridglass Premium Ridge Cap Shingles. Z-bar flashing was also installed between the roof and vertical wall intersection. The stucco patch was an exact match to the existing wall. The ridge beams were treated, capped and painted, and all soffit vents were replaced with new galvanized and painted vents. All galvanized flashing, plumbing vent flashing and furnace flue flashing was etched, primed and painted by brush (rather than spray painting without proper preparation as is done quite often by other contractors…then peels off). We also opted for the GAF Golden Pledge Warranty…for a few hundred more dollars, GAF warrants the installation (both materials and labor) should anything go wrong for the life of the roof assembly. Before the roof tear-off, the crew covered our pool to protect it from debris. At the end of each day, the crew cleaned up the yard. During the tear-off / installation of sheathing there was a slight chance of rain overnight, so Tony Diaz’s crew installed polyethylene sheeting to protect the inside of the house…it didn’t rain, but the effort to ensure that the home was protected was just the type of service we anticipated when hiring Century. When delivering the roof shingles, Tony loaded the materials to the roof using his crane from the street, so the heavy truck would not damage the driveway. At the end of the roof installation (after the solar was installed with the multiple anchorage penetrations included), the GAF representative reviewed the installation and issued the warranty. Quality installation, courteous and professional workers, Tony always returned telephone calls quickly, competitive pricing and high standards of Century Roof and Solar…all make for a very happy Customer. SOLAR PV SYSTEM: Since solar PV systems are designed to last 20 + years, we wanted to start with a quality system. Yes, we could have gone with a cheaper no-name solar panels, but we didn’t want to save a few thousand dollars only to have to replace panel(s) in the future due to faulty workmanship of the panels. We looked very closely at SunPower and SolarWorld systems, as well as SMA central inverters and Enphase micro-inverters. Since we do receive some shade on the lower part of our roof, we were entertaining micro-inverters…but ended up going with dual central inverters. To make a long story short, we felt that central inverters had a longer track record. Tony was very willing to answer all of our questions during the bidding process. Since we were installing a new roof and after getting the bids from roof-only contractors, solar-only contractors and roof & solar contractors, we decided to narrow it down to two companies that provided roof and solar installations for the short list. We wanted one company that we could go to if there was an issue, and especially warrant the complete roof and solar system. The last thing we wanted to do if the roof ever did leak is to hear that a leak was caused by the ‘other’ contractor. Going with Century eliminates this issue…one responsible Contractor…one point of contact. Century was the best deal. When reviewing the bids, we looked at the solar value…basically the dollar/ kwh per year, as each bid was not identical (e.g., different panel mfrs, different quantities, etc.). Our main service panel was replaced with a new Square D 200 Amp panel as part of the solar installation. The solar PV system included 24 SolarWorld SW255 mono panels/ modules, two SMA central inverters SB3000HFUS-30, QuickMount flashing/ anchors system, SolarWorld Suntrol Data Logger, and all exposed wiring was in conduit (painted to match wall color…most was installed in the attic while the roof was being replaced). Century relocated waste vents through the roof to provide an unobstructed roof area for the solar installation. All PG&E paperwork, permits, etc. were handled and paid for by Century. Note that all inspections with the City passed the first time. The inspector also commented on the professional and neat installation (I was present and heard it)! We are very pleased with our interactions with Tony and his company, and the installation!! And one final note…the price contracted was the same price in the end…there wasn’t the nickel and dime change order requests that I’ve seen in my professional work with construction contractors. I only wish all Contractors I deal with every day were half as good as Tony and his crew!

The job was done with skill and efficiency. During each phase we were kept informed. The design was approved by the city and the Fire Department with no problems. We were up and running in a reasonable time.
Description of Work: Tony came out and did an analysis of our electric use and what we wanted to achieve. They showed us the new solar panels that replace the roof tiles and are in several colors that match the roof. We chose the brown tiles. We have to point out that we have the solar tiles to most people. Because the company was a primarily roofing company for many years, before adding the solar part to their company, they are very knowledgeable about roofing and any problems! They do a good roof inspection and remove the old tiles and completely replace the wood strips and the protective paper under it. This was done for the complete area where they are adding panels. Tony was very helpful with the PG and E rebate forms. We received a around $4500 from PG & E. In addition, we received a 30% tax credit. The work was done with care and they cleaned up every day. It was exciting the first time I saw my electric meter go backwards! I have had my share of bad contractors, but with Century Roofing and Solar we had no problems. I have recommending the company to anyone who is interested

The original installation date was not kept, instead they wanted to show up early with only one day notice (unfortunately I allowed it). The roofing part was adequately installed. The skylight installer was extremely messy, throwing insulation around in the attic, and not placing it back correctly. He had "forgotten" to bring the Attic Fan listed on the workorder. Then he talked us out of using one, by saying they don't do much to cool the attic. The painting of the exhaust pipes on the roof top was done very poorly, without primer, and the paint is already peeling. The gutters were not hung properly to allow for complete drainage. They came back to correct this, but some sections still don't drain, and leave standing water in gutters. When their office secretary called back a year later to invite us to a promotional picnic, she asked how the roof was. When I told her about the gutters not draining correctly, she said that the owner would contact us to correct this. We never heard from them again. They perform mediocre work, at a rushed pace, and don't honor their promises.

Arrived on time as scheduled each day. Personable and industrious. Cleaned up after each day. Did a good job on a very old roof. Gutter installer worked around a difficult, odd corner. Lots of dry rot repair. Also repaired ceiling damage. Got a "thumbs up" on two separate inspections from the town inspectors who are notoriously hard to please.

UNFORTUNATELY, THE ROOF WAS INSTALLED DURING A RAINY PERIOD AND TOOK LONGER THAN ANTICIPATED. WATER AND DEBRIS GOT INTO THE FRONT PART OF OUR GARAGE, BUT THE CREW CLEANED IT UP EXTREMELY WELL. THEY WERE VERY GOOD ABOUT CLEANING UP OVERALL AND FOLLOW UP WITH A COUPLE OF ISSUES WAS ALSO HANDLED EXPEDITIOUSLY.
