Excellent Installation and Service! See description above for complete details. Note that the approximate amount noted above for both the roof and solar installation is prior to Federal Tax Rebate for the solar PV installation.
Description of Work: Century Roof & Solar installed a new solar PV system and roof on our home. We looked at only the highest rated contractors…and Century was at the top end of the spectrum…that is why they were the first company to interview. ROOF: The existing roof was an original shake roof (well over 30 years old). Since we needed to re-roof this year (Summer 2012), we figured now would be the time to look into solar. First, we reviewed the various roof options including metal, tile, shake and fiberglass asphalt composition roofing. We decided to specify new 15/32” CDX plywood sheathing over the entire roof area/ 1x6 wood sleepers, GAF Lifetime Designer Shingles; custom fireplace/ chimney cricket w/ backing; GAF Snow Country Ridge Vent, New prepainted seamless gutters and downspouts, replace fascia/ rake boards, GAF Deck Armor, GAF Storm Guard Leak Barrier; starter shingles and GAF Ridglass Premium Ridge Cap Shingles. Z-bar flashing was also installed between the roof and vertical wall intersection. The stucco patch was an exact match to the existing wall. The ridge beams were treated, capped and painted, and all soffit vents were replaced with new galvanized and painted vents. All galvanized flashing, plumbing vent flashing and furnace flue flashing was etched, primed and painted by brush (rather than spray painting without proper preparation as is done quite often by other contractors…then peels off). We also opted for the GAF Golden Pledge Warranty…for a few hundred more dollars, GAF warrants the installation (both materials and labor) should anything go wrong for the life of the roof assembly. Before the roof tear-off, the crew covered our pool to protect it from debris. At the end of each day, the crew cleaned up the yard. During the tear-off / installation of sheathing there was a slight chance of rain overnight, so Tony Diaz’s crew installed polyethylene sheeting to protect the inside of the house…it didn’t rain, but the effort to ensure that the home was protected was just the type of service we anticipated when hiring Century. When delivering the roof shingles, Tony loaded the materials to the roof using his crane from the street, so the heavy truck would not damage the driveway. At the end of the roof installation (after the solar was installed with the multiple anchorage penetrations included), the GAF representative reviewed the installation and issued the warranty. Quality installation, courteous and professional workers, Tony always returned telephone calls quickly, competitive pricing and high standards of Century Roof and Solar…all make for a very happy Customer. SOLAR PV SYSTEM: Since solar PV systems are designed to last 20 + years, we wanted to start with a quality system. Yes, we could have gone with a cheaper no-name solar panels, but we didn’t want to save a few thousand dollars only to have to replace panel(s) in the future due to faulty workmanship of the panels. We looked very closely at SunPower and SolarWorld systems, as well as SMA central inverters and Enphase micro-inverters. Since we do receive some shade on the lower part of our roof, we were entertaining micro-inverters…but ended up going with dual central inverters. To make a long story short, we felt that central inverters had a longer track record. Tony was very willing to answer all of our questions during the bidding process. Since we were installing a new roof and after getting the bids from roof-only contractors, solar-only contractors and roof & solar contractors, we decided to narrow it down to two companies that provided roof and solar installations for the short list. We wanted one company that we could go to if there was an issue, and especially warrant the complete roof and solar system. The last thing we wanted to do if the roof ever did leak is to hear that a leak was caused by the ‘other’ contractor. Going with Century eliminates this issue…one responsible Contractor…one point of contact. Century was the best deal. When reviewing the bids, we looked at the solar value…basically the dollar/ kwh per year, as each bid was not identical (e.g., different panel mfrs, different quantities, etc.). Our main service panel was replaced with a new Square D 200 Amp panel as part of the solar installation. The solar PV system included 24 SolarWorld SW255 mono panels/ modules, two SMA central inverters SB3000HFUS-30, QuickMount flashing/ anchors system, SolarWorld Suntrol Data Logger, and all exposed wiring was in conduit (painted to match wall color…most was installed in the attic while the roof was being replaced). Century relocated waste vents through the roof to provide an unobstructed roof area for the solar installation. All PG&E paperwork, permits, etc. were handled and paid for by Century. Note that all inspections with the City passed the first time. The inspector also commented on the professional and neat installation (I was present and heard it)! We are very pleased with our interactions with Tony and his company, and the installation!! And one final note…the price contracted was the same price in the end…there wasn’t the nickel and dime change order requests that I’ve seen in my professional work with construction contractors. I only wish all Contractors I deal with every day were half as good as Tony and his crew!
