Had a great experience overall. We did the home energy audit. ABC had a special in June for $175 for the energy audit. The technician for the energy audit was very knowledgeable. I highly recommend being around when the technician conducts the home energy audit. He walked us through the multiple steps in the process and showed us the results he was recording. They check the furnace efficiency and for any CO leaks, a/c and also perform a negative pressure test by closing the windows and putting a blower on the sealed door. He used a thermal camera to check for leaks. By being there with the technician we got a true feel for the big items we needed to fix to give me the biggest bang for the buck. He was very open and honest about things, that gave us a very good feeling about doing business with the company. The technician found some asbestos tape in our furnace return. He was prompt to point it out and recommended not doing the duct pressure test since it might agitate and release the asbestos into the furnace air intake along with the leaky ducts. Since we have a toddler I was very grateful for his experience and keen insight into locating this to avoid any heath issues for my family. The next step we had a consultation with Bill from ABC. Bill provided a detailed report of all the items that needed to be fixed to reduce energy usage. It was a large laundry list of items, but Bill was very professional and open to working with us to lay out different options. Since we had a good feel for the top items that needed to get fixed, from the energy audit, we laid out these options with Bill. I had aslo got quotes from other contractors. Overall the pricing was slightly on the higher side, but not too bad. The thing to point out is that ABC does only blow-in form insulation. This was quite expensive. So we decided to hold off on the attic insulation. ABC pulled the permits from the city of San Jose for us (We put this in the contract with ABC). For the asbestos removal they sub-contracted the work out to Synergy. The guys from Synergy did a fantastic job. They removed all the asbestos tape from the return and also the ducts along with the asbestos in the attic. They cleaned up really well after they finished and they disposed off the hazardous material using proper EPA guidelines (we got a letter from Waste Management confirming this). Plus the work was completed in a very timely manner. The next day ABC showed up on time and installed the new ducts and sealed up a lot of recessed lights. The recessed lighting was leaking attic air (this showed up on the thermal camera during the energy audit). They installers were very professional and worked with us to tune the ducts for even air flow throughout the house. They cleaned up aftert they finished. The first permit inspection was failed by the city inspector. But ABC was very prompt in responding and the very next morning they sent folks to fix the items (The city needed the ducts to be strapped every 4 ft). They also paid for the re-inspection from the city. Finally ABC took care of all the paperwork with PG&E for the energy rebates. Within 6 weeks we got a $2000 energy rebate from PG&E. Very efficient. I did call up Bill at ABC to make sure that things were filed on time, but ABC seemed to be on top of things. ABC is now on my speed dial for any future HVAC work that we need to do.
Description of Work: 1) Home energy audit 2) Old duct and asbestos removal (Sub contracted to Synergy by ABC) 3) New duct replacement 4) Sealing of leaks around recessed lights

ABS was a great company to work with. Several people were involved, from the guy who came to look at repairing our existing furnace, to the sales person who came to assess our environment and give us options, to the guy who performed the initial energy audit of our house, to the men who performed the work of replacing the furnace and duct work, and finally the man who did the follow-up energy assessment for submitting the rebate statistics and paperwork for us. All were very professional, friendly, courteous, and took as much time as we wanted to explain everything and answer all of our questions. We will definitely continue to call them for future heating-related needs. (We have no air conditioning.)
Description of Work: ABC replaced our furnace and duct work. The (forced-air) furnace was 25+ years old and not worth the cost to repair. They performed an energy audit and found that not only was the duct work a major source of heat loss, but also that it contained asbestos. They informed us of the energy efficiency improvement rebates available, which amount to about half of the cost of the project, since we chose to include the duct work replacement. All options were thoroughly explained to our complete satisfaction, and we felt no pressure in making our choices.

First of all, when I called they set the appointment for the next day and gave me a four hour window. On the day of the appointment, I called and asked if I was at the early end or later end of the four hour window. they said it appeared to be the later, but that someone would call me about an hour beofre they thought the guy would arrive. I did receive a call about an houre before he arrived, which allowed me to get some errands taken care of. They also called me about 20 minutes before he arrived to let me know he was close. He arrived axactly 20 minutes later. It was a very hot day and my air conditioner was not cooling. He worked out in the heat and figured out the problem pretty quickly. He fixed it right then, and we tested to make sure it was working. It was fixed. They were very professional, timely, and very accomodating. I felt the price was reasonable. Couldn't ask for more than that!!

They were very knowledgable, provided a fair estimate, did not pressure sell me, and moved quickly to install once I decided to proceed. The only probelms I have had a with the post instalation vent testing required as part of the permiit process. The vent testing device was not avail on the day of installation so I had to take more time off work to meet the tester, and now a second test is needed, and I'll have to take more time off for that as well. Honestly, there is not a lot of oinsideration for working folks in most businesses these days.

The service call went very smoothly, and the unit was working great and putting out cool air - much cooler than the air I was getting before the breakdown. I told the tech that I found ABC on Angie's list and decided to go with them because they had gotten a lot of good reviews, and had been in business for a long time. However, I did forget to ask for my 10% "Angie's list" discount, and paid full price! So don't forget to ask for the discount when the invoice is being written up! I would recommend this company to friends and family, and I would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: AC had quit cooling and was just blowing room temperature air, I found ABC Cooling and Heating on Angie's list and set up an appointment. The tech, Sal, was punctual, courteous, and very knowledgable, and has worked for ABC for 20 years. The problem was that an electrical wire to the compressor had burned into, and the unit was a little low on refrigerant. He repaired the wire and added the refrigerant, which was expensive because my unit uses the R22 that is being phased out and replaced with 410 (much better for the environment).

They guy from ABC Cooling & Heating told me that the cost of the service would usually be $79, I believe, if he went up into the attic. He did go into the attic, but did not charge me the extra money and it was just $59. They gave me an estimate because my ducts are old and have to be changed and redirected and also the air conditioner itself is old. My heater is getting old because I had everything done in '96 and up until now they worked beautifully. It's just my duct system is not right and this is what my general problem is. They sent me a beautiful and put together home performance assessment and charged me $175 for that. They said that the biggest problem is that my ducts are very leaky and covered with asbestos. My house was built in the 1960s, so they didn't have materials like they have today and if I wanted to have the asbestos removed and new ducts installed the price would be $5950 minus the $175 that I already paid and minus the $59 for service reimbursement. That would be $5716 and then I would have to have a special company come out that would remove the asbestos which would be a separate cost of $1450, so the price would be $7166 and then he said I could get a PG&E rebate between $1500 and $2000 on that particular project. I called PG&E and checked about the rebates because I was kind of worried and didn't feel comfortable about the guy, percentage wise, and found out that there was no rebate on the duct system. PG&E was connected with another company and the system is not with PG&E but with somebody else, so it was too complicated for me to see whose doing what after I would have paid $7200. It's like a domino effect. I have a unique setup in my house with a multiple thermostat that would have to be removed with the new duct work, so this additional work would put in a new furnace and new air conditioning and it would be altogether $13,239 in which I would get a rebate between $2500 and $3500 which is very questionable and the percentage is decided by some other company. I just could not do it and I don't feel that I would get some of the money back and there was actually no one that gave me an almost sure percentage of how much I would get. They all gave rebates but it is a percentage on what you save in energy, so how do you figure out the percentage on how much rebate you get? It is a lousy little game and on the bottom it says if I use the financing for the total amount before rebate my payment would be $367 a month for 36 months and I would get a rebate a couple of months after the job. It is a lot of money and I don't have it. My system is definitely going to be changed, but not by them. I'm going to find somebody who gives me a matter of fact and tells me this is what I need and let's do this first and see how it works. I tell them that I really appreciate their honesty, but please don't give me crap because I've had it and have heard lots of garbage. It's not fair, but some people always try you know.

He came on time and the office call about 30 minutes before he was here that he is on his way. He stayed about 1 hour and explained why our machine was not working. It was great price for the service. I hated companies I used before because I had American home warranty insurance which they covered a lot of fixing for $50. It cost me $20 more for them to come, but much better experience with them.

Our air conditioning would not start on a Sunday. I called ABC on Sunday evening; they answered and were able to schedule me for 11 a.m. the next day. Bruce was prompt, professional, and able to fix the problem without major maintenance. The service was so good, I signed up for the annual maintenance visits. Would recommend them to others.

We were very happy with the professionalism of ABC Heating abd Cooling. It only took a half day to remove asbestoes and about 1 1/2 days to remove old heater and install new heater in the attic. They built a platform for the new heater and installed an attic light. Everything was very clean when they finished. When the city inspector came he told my husband that they had done an exceptionally good job. They helped submit paperwork for all rebates, helping us get $6000 back from various rebate programs. Our final out of pocket was about $3000. We were very pleased overall.
Description of Work: We used ABC to do an energy upgrade to our house as part of PG&E's energy upgrade rebate program. They did an audit of our house, arranged to remove asbestoes, removed our old heater and ductwork, widened our attic entry, moved our heater location from wall to attic, and installed new ducts and heater.

I can sum it up in one word, Ben.I don't know what I was thinking when I called a H&AC company that was NOT from Angie's List. The technician that came out quoted me $804 dollars to clean out all the blockages in the coil, replace the filters and bring the system back to "factory fresh." I thought that was steep and told him I would get back to him. That visit was $119.00. I remembered I had joined Angie's list so I logged in and found ABC Cooling and Heating. They had all positive reviews so I figured I would give them a try. Ben came out the very next day. It was a Saturday! The visit was $59.00 to assess what could be wrong. He went through the unit with a fine tooth comb and could not substantiate what I had been previously told by the other company. The problem was simply a flip of a switch. The unit had been turned off and I didn't even know there was a switch there. I just knew about the breaker. Ben was very knowledgeable about the unit and took the time to explain in detail how everything worked and what to look for should it stop working again. I swear I wanted to hug him when he left and I am a dude. Not only did he save me money but he educated me. I will NEVER go to anyone else for my H&A needs again. ABC is it for me.

Overall I think it went well--there were some miscommunications on the details of the service that we had to work out. For instance: I thought they would remove the existing insulation in the attic and replace it with the new blown in product. - We agreed to leave the old insulation in place and blow in overtop since the existing insulation was still in good shape. When they insulated the duct work but didn't provide a metalic covering for the insulation--it left the insulationexposed. - They agreed to cover with metalic reflictive coating (wasn't discussed while setting up the contract). Originally planed to leave the return to continue pulling air from the crawlspace. - Agreed to seal the return and pull it from within the 1st floor of the house. Planned to insulate the wall between the house and the garage. What I had asked for was that the garage roof be insulated and this wasn't clear in the contract. - Ended up paying more but the work was well done. The team who actually did the work was excellent! It's hot, dirty, and difficult work and was impressed with their timeliness, work ethic, attention to detail, and communication. The work was well done and passed inspections by PG&E and Contra Costa County without any issues. I downgraded them from an "A" rating due to the miscommunications on the contract and the lack of follow-up (and length of time) it took to handle the rebates from PG&E (approx 5 months) and the County (approx 9 months). If I hadn't followed up on numerous occasions the rebates would never have been processed.
