I was very lucky to be referred to Dennis Ness as a licensed contractor. I had many bad experiences with previous contractors. He remodeled one house for me which sold at top dollar in 2007 and remodeled a second house I bought in 2017. He tiled and remodeled both bathrooms which needed updating. Dennis also tore out the carpeting and put in cherry wood flooring throughout the entire house, which completely changed and renewed the house appearance. The deck was completely falling apart and he suggested a poured concrete patio with new roofing and skylights. This patio gave me an outside area to eat and entertain company winter or summer. The most recent work he did was to paint the interior and exterior of the entire house with much more cheerful colors and replace all the old windows and sliding glass doors with energy efficient glass. What I have liked about Dennis Ness is he will take the time to discuss personal ideas, colors and lasting construction materials. He is a very fast, honest, money conscientious, and hardworking man.
Description of Work: complete remodel of first house to sell then updating house bought in 2017

The project did not go well. Once work was completed (Nov 2016), we noticed a tremendous amount of dried grout and haze that was visible in all the bedrooms and hallway. As you can imagine, it did not look good (take a look at the pics). We contacted Dennis about this issue and his immediate response was for us to clean it, not him...what the heck?!? As you probably know, once grout dries, it's extremely difficult if not impossible to remove. Well, we tried to get him back out to the house to review his work but he never would come back. Totally unacceptable. Now, it doesn't stop there. Once it started raining this year, we noticed water was coming through the grout in some parts of the bedrooms. Again, not good! One of the reasons we contacted Dennis was to seal the concrete slab floors and add an underlayment to ensure water would not enter the home. Did that even happen? All I know is that we have areas where there is water moisture coming through the grout between the tiles. Lastly, many of the tiles are not sitting evenly. Not only does this not look good, it's also a hazard. I've personally stubbed my toe on one of these tiles sticking out. We did eventually get Dennis out to review the issues we were experiencing after months of trying to contact him. Unfortunately, he did not take accountability for the work he did. He did say he would contact us in about a week to schedule time for him to come out and sand off/clean the grout. Well, it's been about 4-6 weeks and we still haven't heard from him. Overall, just a bad experience. Dennis is a nice guy, but maybe the job got away from him. Maybe he was way over his head. But know matter what, the craftsmanship and the quality and cleanliness of work was extremely poor. Based on this shoddy work, there is a tremendous amount of time and money that will have to be spent to correct his errors. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend Dennis Ness Construction due to this experience.
Description of Work: We contracted Dennis for the following work: - install porcelain tile floors in our bedrooms, hallway and stair landing. - install underlayment/water barrier on top of the concrete slab and sub-floor area - install new sheet rock and insulation in areas where we had some walls removed - some dry wall and texture - frame a closet and repair door jams as needed

He was very easy to work with, very responsive, and was aware of our time limitations. He worked very hard to get the job done by the timeline needed. .. Which he did. Job was done on time , with quality and reasonable price. I had received other quotes and due to the high prices, had decided not to replace the roof, until I Received the quote from mr ness.
Description of Work: Mr. Ness built a new wooden roof for our gazebo. He worked with us for the most cost effective solution. He gave us a quote and came out 6 days later to do the job. We needed to make some modifications the day of the job, which he took in stride.

It was a long process taking a couple of months to complete. He did all the work himself without any help until he laid the stone patio and then had the assist of one laborer. He was doing multiple jobs while doing mine. He would say he'd do this or be back later to finish up and then did not show up, so the job took a long time to complete. In fact he never completed the trim to the sliding closet door. So the trim is missing. When building the step from the deck to the stone patio he miscalculated the size of the step. The step which is not level is 9 1/2 inches on one side and 8 in. at the other end. I asked him to re- do the step so it would be in compliance with code of 7-71/2 in. He said, since it was made of stone there was more leeway in the code. Now the cement he used is all cracked and discolored between each stone. I think when he mixed the cement he did not mix the color in correctly and the cement was too wet. He did a good job on the deck and an excellent job on the shed. I think he did the stone patio without the proper knowledge or experience of masonry.
Description of Work: Built a 13/20 ft. deck of azek decking for $4,963. Re-roof a shed for $475. Clean and patch leaks in roof gutters for $245. Replace sliding closet door for $160. Also built a stone patio on either sides of the deck which I don't have the bill or remember how much it cost.

Dennis is extremely detail-oriented and conscientious. He is very good at explaining his work as he goes along. I often felt like I was getting the benefit of an experienced house inspector's wisdom and guidance; he seems to have memorized the Building Code. It turned out cost effective to have one person handling all aspects, rather than hiring a variety of separate specialists. We'll hire Dennis again for future remodeling of all types.
Description of Work: Dennis installed ceramic tile and laminate floor throughout the house; built a custom-bookshelf; replaced a window and door, patched, textured, and painted walls, removed a non-functioning baseboard heating system, dug a gas line trench and poured a cement slab for a propane tank, stained a guest house exterior, and removed a large tree.
