In a letter to SIPA, I stated: I was a student in your 2 day seminar in Shepardstown in June. I was attending because I was building a house in California with my son and we were using SIPS for roof and gable end panels. I used your directory and cross-referenced the SIPA member list to get proposals for supplying the panels. I got estimates from two companies in Grass Valley, SIP Builders, and SIP Home Systems. I chose to order the panels from Mic Carmichael-SIP Builders because his price was lower and the other estimate was incomplete and late. I am writing to you and SIPA, now, to inform you that Mic Carmichael has no business associating himself with either of your reputable organizations. I have been in the construction business for 40 years, and have never seen a contractor that was so unqualified. I made the mistake of letting him talk me into an installation contract, because we were up against a snow deadline and his price was reasonable. What he did to our project can only be described as an abomination. I spent days redoing what I could, but I am still stuck with an inferior installation. I chose to pay him rather than losing time fighting with him, and to prevent further delays in the project, but I now intend to let as many people know about this guy as possible. Mic is at least consistent. He managed to screw up everything he touched, beginning with the panel takeoff. The panels he ordered from R-Control were mis-sized everywhere. Now we have a 1 foot overhang on one side of the roof and a 2 foot overhang on the other. Maybe if these guys hadn't had to patch in pieces for the gable panels, the joinery wouldn't have been so obvious, but now we have gaping holes at every extra joint on top of the gaps at the factory joints. As for sealing the job, there just wasn't even an attempt. I used over 30 cans of foam to try to fill the holes they left. Due to threatening weather, I covered the roof after sealing only the obvious holes and gaps. The panel seams were never drilled and filled, as you showed in your class. I am hoping that I can address this before installing the metal roof in the Spring. Not only is Mic incompetent as an installer, he is severely lacking as a businessman. He was so obviously lost the whole time he was on the job, but he always had someone else to blame. He was downright rude to my daughter-in law, he abused our forklift and damaged the job site, he left a mess everywhere he worked. He spent 3 weeks screwing up what I could have made an acceptable product of in 2 week by just going on what I learned in your class. This guy claims to have 20 years experience with SIPS. I can't believe he has ever worked with them before. He didn't have a clue. If you have any process for vetting membership lists, it would behoove you to check this guy out. He will never contribute anything to your organizations, and can only drag down your reputations.
