We determined it was not worth fixing based on the cost in comparison to buying a new machine. I've used Spears a few times over the last few years, and every tech has seemed very knowledgeable and helpful. Sometimes fixing the problem has been cost effective, and sometimes it has not been as in this instance.
Description of Work: I had a dishwasher that was malfunctioning by leaving water in the bottom of it. The tech from Spears quickly diagnosed the problem which would require the replacement of 2 parts.

I had an excellent repair experience with South Bay Appliance / Spears Appliance Service. My Bosch cooktop had a problem where it would keep sparking/clicking even after the flame was on. Alberto came out and felt it was a pretty straight forward problem that he could fix in a day by replacing the spark module, a reasonable assumption. He quoted me a not to exceed price based on this diagnosis. As it turned out, my problem was one of those odd ball cases. Alberto and Dan ended up making eight house visits before the problem was isolated (and believe me, it wasn't for lack of trying). The problem was with a pair of bad diodes you would have never thought about. When they told me the cause, I could hardly believe it. Who these days even bothers to test and solder in new diodes? In the era of disposable electronics, if the problem isn't a replaceable module, you are simply out of luck. And talk about persistence. Spears never gave up, even after Bosch tech support had thrown in the towel. Dave Spears, the owner, even personally worked on the cooktop himself. Talk about dedication to your customers. Any other company would have given up by the 2nd visit and chalked it up to being a lemon. During this entire time, Spears never complained, grumbled, or asked for more money because of the unanticipated hours and visits. All I heard was a lot of reassurance that they would get to the bottom of it. And when I received the final invoice, the total due was LESS than the original estimate. I am so impressed with the honesty and professionalism of the whole Spears team. I have never worked with a more upstanding group of repair people. This is the only company I will call in the future for my appliance service needs.
Description of Work: Repair Bosch cooktop that kept sparking even after flame was on.

The person who came out had all the proper tools and was very knowledgeable. The work experience was perfect. He showed up when he said he would. The approach was a little more corporate but in the end the work was done right.
Description of Work: Our water maker in our refrigerator has a filter and a pump system. The hose sprung a leak. The first provider we called installed the wrong hooks and it flooded the kitchen. I then had Spears come out and do the job right.

plastic cams were worn out.... once the tech came back with the parts.... it took all of 20 minutes to fix it and i was charged $180.00 which I felt was a rip off. I was however only charged $40 to re-fix the fridge, which I felt could have been repaired more thoroughly the first time.... so.... I believe this company is professional... but overcharge for their work. For $180 I could have picked up a second hand washer in excellent condirtion....
Description of Work: Initially I had my large fridge that stopped getting cold, especially the freezer compartment fixed in October .... a technician removed all the excess ice and put it all back together. It was guaranteed for thirty days... but it developed the exact same problem just days after the warranty expired. On the second visit... it was re-repaired, and a new mini heater installed to stop the ice build up... so far so good. At the same time I had had a problem with my washing machine, the central agitator was not functioning correctly and wasn't 'circulating' the washing.... it turned out that 3 little

have been trying to get my Bosch microwave fixed forever. Had to determine if it was worth it. South Bay accepted it had already been diagnosed several times and so didn't insist on diagnosing again - wonderful! Also, Bosch offered to pay for the parts and South Bay dealt with/managed that very well. Dave from Spears offered to do in the minimum time. He was great. Dryer - Dave came out to diagnose and fix (heating element). Works great - also did this in minimal time, very little $ in parts. Thanks!!!
Description of Work: two repairs at different times. very professional, very good. Karen - admin, repair line, is excellent and helpful. Dave from Spears was awesome also, and did both repairs in the minimum time. Angie's list was so helpful in finding a reputable place to fix my Bosch appliances, who was also very very fair.

I try to support local businesses whenever I can so I went to their store to see what kind of ovens they sell. The salesman told me I would never be able to find a double oven for $800. I was perturbed bc the technician and salesman quoted me two totally different prices and they work for the same company. When I asked about selling me a single oven the salesman balked at the idea. "What will you do with the extra space?!" he said. As if that were his problem. I told him I could only afford about $800. He looked up the cheapest oven he had and quoted me $1,199.00 and $128 extra to install it. I went to an appliance outlet and bought a brand new GE double oven with convection for the same price South Bay Appliance wanted to charge me for one oven with no convection (they had the same single oven for $500 btw). I called South Bay Appliance the next day to see if they would like to install it. The receptionist said she would get back to me and 2 hours and two phone calls to their office later she told me that they were just too busy to install my ovens...ever. I think that was their way of getting back at me for not buying my oven through them. The company I bought it from is installing it instead for the same price I would have paid SBA. I will never use SBA again.
Description of Work: I made an appointment for the technician to come out a week in advance but they only gave me a date, no time frame was set until the morning of appointment. I thought it was bad customer service to make me keep my whole day open only to tell me the morning of the appointment that I would need to be home from 1-4. The technician charged me $73 to tell me that I needed a new switch which would cost $37.95 and that to install it would be $169.71. That seemed outrageous to me. He also checked out my oven and told me it was a "runaway" and that I would have to buy a new one. I have a built in double oven and I asked how much they cost. He said about $800.

Clothes drier didn't work. Called South Bay Appliance because of good ratings on Angie's List. Person on phone was efficient. Made appointment to have a repairman come to the house. The price for a repairman to look at the problem would be $75 (I think), deductible from cost of repair. Repairman came and said a belt was busted. Cost would be $155 parts and labor. Seemed a bit much, but I said yes. He fixed it. Did a good job.

The service technician was very friendly and knowledgeable. He called me at work when he was 1/2 hour away so that I could leave and meet him at our home. I really appreciated the call rather than having to wait at home for 2 hours. I was back at work in an hour. The whole experience was very pleasant and I would highly recommend this company to everyone I know.
Description of Work: Our built in refrigerator was intermittently shutting off and making a ping sound. It would not keep the temperature low enough. The service technician came out looked at it and diagnosed the problem quickly. He knew exactly what was needed to fix it and gave me an estimate right away. He was able to order the part immediately and came back 1 week later with the ordered part and fixed it.

Good experience. Do tell them, up front, that you got their name thru Angieslist. This puts onus on them to do good work, knowing that they'll be reviewed, etc.
Description of Work: Have a subzero fridge that was leaking water into drip pan. Would have to empty drip pan weekly, thus needed help. Had another company look at it, and just didn't get a good feeling regarding their evaluation, suggestions. They didn't explain why the dripping was excessive, etc. Wanted to change ice maker, adjust freon, etc. Then, thru Angieslist, I contacted Southbay Appliance. Filled freon, explained how low freon caused excess dripping, etc. Good results, great technician.

Great service and company!!
Description of Work: The technician came out to service the dishwasher that was filling up with water. They were on time, professional, very knowledgable and extremely friendly. Turns out, the tenant installed the garbage disposal wrong so the dishwasher had no drainage. The technician took about 15 minutes to fix the problem and only charged me a basic service charge. I would definitely use them again!!

Contacted company through website for appointment, expecting a call back the next day between 8 and 9 as stated- but did not hear. They might want to tighten up on this. Called and spoke to very nice lady who fixed an appointment the next day- food going off! They called next morning and confirmed appointment and were there at around 11am. Fixed the refrigerator- ice blockage or something something.Checked everything else while here. Great service. Very professional. Highly recommend.

It started well. Our 2-year-old front-loading washer was not finishing the cycle. We called Spears based on thier reviews on Angie's List. The tech came out on time and diagnosed the problem. He showed me a trap that was clogged and explained this was frequently the cause of our type of problem. He was clearly well-trained on the machine - he had a great deal of comfort on the machine and was clear in his explanations of how it worked and what was wrong. He put it back together, confirmed the machine was working properly, and left. The same guy came for the subsequent visits, and, every time, he was GREAT. Spears does a nice job training the service team, and keeping them motivated. Unfortunately, clearing the trap did not fix the problem. The problem recurred a couple of loads later. We called, he came, he diagnosed a faulty computer board and ordered the part. We then went out of town, leaving my mom in charge. She called Spears every other day to see if the part was in. By the time we arrived back in town, two weeks later, the part was still not in. Maybe that's not Spears fault, but that seems like a mighty long time for a computer board to be shipped, and for us to be without a washing machine. We got back Sept. 1, mom left. Spears had told my mom that they'd call when the part showed up, so I waited for their call. Monday was Labor Day. When they didn't call on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, I gave them a call (Thursday afternoon). It turned out (according to the tracking for the package) that the part should have been delivered Aug. 30, but the shipment never arrived. Spears apparently has no system in place to notice this sort of thing, and so nothing was happening to track the missing shipment. Until I called, that is. So it's Thursday, and I'm talking to Karen in service, and she's quite polite and professional. She figures out the shipment was lost - it disappeared after getting to "the hub" -- and she gets on the phone with the supplier to have another one sent by overnight delivery. We've missed the cut-off for fedex for the day (we live in LA, the part was somewhere in the eastern time zones), so it's shipped Friday, arrives Monday, and is installed Tuesday. That part was all great. What was puzzling and frustrating was: (1) 2 weeks to ship a package across the country? that's not acceptable, and if the issue is the cost of overnighting the package, then at least give me the option to pay the extra charge (I have one washing machine and two kids - I'll pay pretty much anything to get that machine fixed fast). (2) no one noticed that the shipment was missing and my repair was not complete, until I called them. Maybe they got used to my mom calling every day, but, this story sounds a lot like the story of the guy who needed a new coin box for the washing machine at his apartment building. Spears just doesn't track open tickets very well. They got the guy out the first time right on time, professionally, and he was great. Every time there was an appointment, it was kept. But when they had to keep an eye on stuff, they blew it. Get Karen some help. She's great, but I get the impression she needs an assistant.

It took far too many phone calls to South Bay appliance get this job done. I was told that they didn't know which size coin box needed replacing. They had one size but not the other, so they needed to order the smaller one. They could have come to measure the box or asked me to do it, but that didn't happen. Instead I made one call after another over the course of 10 days. I was told that the smaller box hadn't come in and they'd call me back to give me an ETA. I never got a promised return call. In my last call to them I explained again that the tenants were complaining. Since they didn't even know which size box was needed, it made no sense to keep delaying the job. The more common coin box they had in stock might be the right one. The situation wasn't resolved until I told them that I couldn't believe I was getting this kind of run around from a company on Angie's List. You could have heard a pin drop on the other end of that phone. The job was done the next day. The box they had in stock was the right size for the job after all. The girls that answer the phones are all polite and professional. The repairman, Chuck, was professional and did a good job. But the break down in customer service this time was horrible and I can't understand it. I've used them in the past, before I joined A.L., and didn't have this kind of trouble. If it wasn't for having to account to Angie's List this wouldn't have gotten resolved as well as it did. It's been a month and the new coin box works perfectly. I have no complaints with the workmanship at all.

Our dryer stopped working on a Sunday afternoon. I called South Bay Appliances first thing Monday morning and they were able to schedule us for the following day. The technician arrived promptly and was able to diagnose the issue quickly. The best thing was that he had the part on the truck (for a 10 year old dryer), so we didn't have to wait for another appointment to get it fixed.

My husband dealt with the repairman and the evaluation and cost discussion took less than 15 minutes.
Description of Work: Estimate on repairing an approximately 10 year old dishwasher for a broken handle and apparent control board.Unfortunately, am unable to recall the repairman's name but he was courteous and worked quickly to pinpoint the problems. He stated to replace the handle, which locked the door, and replace the control board would cost $398.00Since this is almost 1/2 to 1/3 of a new dishwasher cost it was quickly decided to forego any repair work. The repairman was in agreement.

In April 2010, my husband and I purchased a new Maytag Bravos gas washer and dryer from South Bay Appliance in Gardena, California. We chose them in part because they are an authorized Maytag dealer. When they installed the new dryer, they used an exhaust hose made of shiny metal foil to vent it to the outside. We later discovered that the manual that came with our dryer has a very prominent warning against the use of such exhaust hoses because they pose a severe fire hazard. The manual clearly states that only metal or semi-flexible metal ducting should be used. This warning is repeated several times in the manual. Moreover, both the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and Consumer Reports have published the same information. I called Southbay Appliance about this situation twice and spoke with a salesperson whose only response was that they always install dryers this way and have never had a problem. He said he would pass my concerns on to the Service Manager. We then called Maytag and were informed that the use of foil ducting material could void the dryer's warranty. We have since replaced the exhaust hose ourselves with the recommended equipment. However, we never heard further from Southbay Appliance. Based on this experience, we will never do business with this company again.

The ice maker in my refrigerator stopped working. They came out gave me an estimate and ordered the parts. It took a couple weeks to get the parts. the repairman came out installed new ice maker and wiring harness but couldn't get it working. They had to come out 2 more times to find the problem, but they didn't charge me for it. I paid less than the original estimate. So they stand behind their work and are fair and professional. I called South Bay and was given a really prompt service appointment. The technician, Dave, called before he showed up. He was punctual and courteous. The problem was simple: the reset switch for the ice maker needed to be turned off for about one minute. Dave stated that the sensor might be going bad. He looked up the part number and quoted a price for the new sensor and the installation if this happened again.South Bay is honest and fair. I would definitely use South Bay Appliance Service again in the future!

I called on Friday and was scheduled on Saturday. The person on the phone was pleasant and efficient. The repair person called in the morning to let me know when he would arrive. He was on time, and the work was done to my satisfaction. I graded "B" in the price only because I have no basis for comparison, it seemed reasonable to me and much less than a new dishwasher. The repair person also gave me some tips to keep the dishwasher working well. I''m very satisfied, and have already recommended them to a friend who has a broken dishwasher. I would definitely use their service again. No complaints or issues.

I would rate my experience with South Bay Appliance with A+'s if available. I used Angie's List to find SB after a failed experience with Reliable Appliance Services. In one trip South Bay diagnosed and resolved the problem with my dryer for 1/5th the cost and trips as Reliable. South Bay's repaiman got the job done, he resolved a simple problem with an appropriate resolution at a fair price. South Bay's appropriate resolution to the probelm helped justify winning a credit card dispute againt the first company due to their poor service. l
