In a word...FANTASTIC. Very professional, informative (explained things very well), efficient and on-time. Val estimated 4 days of work, that's what it took. They cleaned up pretty well considering the mess involved and stayed on budget. We had one misunderstanding, which was corrected immediately with no issue. I would highly recommend them and would definitely use them again in the future.

Very good experience with this company. Val is very professional and polite.Maybe it was due to being busy, but Val was a little slow ( a day or two) with replies. But he does get back to you.I would definitely use this company again and I'm going to recommend him to my family and friends.
Description of Work: - Arrived on time for reviewing the job. He provided a written estimate within a week.- Val and his crew arrived on time on the day of the job- They dug down for depth of the concrete patio- Measured and leveled the area keeping drainage in mind- Applied mesh reinforcements, poured the concrete, finished and placed expansion joints- Val and his crew cleaned up and hauled away the dirt

The work that was done was absolutely perfect! Our inspector was impressed and so were we. The crew was professional - they showed up on time every day, completed the work in the agreed upon time, were polite to my family, cleaned up after themselves, and foremost, built the wall beautifully! This was a very complicated job because of the changing elevations, the differing heights of the portions of the wall, with curves and jags along the wall. The pilasters are perfectly formed and compliment the wall. The crew found mistakes that our gate installer made and corrected them for us (at no additional charges!) They preserved the trees and vegetation surrounding the wall - we could not be happier with the work of this crew! Many of our neighbors have stopped by to compliment us. Thank you!! We HIGHLY recommend Falcon Concrete and Masonry! They are the best!
Description of Work: We needed a permitted, 200 foot long, highly complicated (differing heights, changing elevations, curved walls, rebar reinforced) split faced block wall built in a short time for a reasonable price.

I'd obtained 3 estimates and, while the cost was all about the same, each offered a different solution for repairing the wall. Removing the caps and pouring the concrete and rebar seemed best to me. Val and his crew were here at the scheduled time and cleaned up nicely each night. They completed the job on schedule - even with a little problem with getting the stone facade, which Val took care of immediately. At every step in the process, I was informed and included in all decisions. I really appreciated the attention to detail that Val and his crew gave to this project. I could not be happier with the wall. Falkon did work of the highest quality and I would not hesitate to use them again.
Description of Work: Falkon repaired a cinder block wall and added a stone facade to it. They removed the caps and put rebar and concrete down every other block, as well as patching a major crack, then added the stone facade.

Val came out to give an estimate and I explained to him what i wanted. He was very receptive to my Ideas and he came up several ideas of his own. I believe he gave me a fair estimate for the work done. They came out on a Friday and were finished in one day. The workers were consciences in their work and fast. Very happy with the job overall

As stated above, I was looking to hire a vendor to remove, regrade and pour a new driveway for my boss and contacted Falkon because of the high ratings here on Angie's List. Val promptly returned my call and set up a time for a walk through and estimate. On that day, Val showed up on time and listened to everything I needed to convey on behalf of my boss, and asked direct questions and made suggestions that would provide the best result for my boss (and make me look good). It was a really comfortable time as I never felt I was getting a 'heavy sales pitch.' To me it was also very clear he was a perfectionist. All that said, unknown to me over the weekend my boss' business associate referred and set him up with another vendor, and he went with them even before hearing my report on Falcon (or any of the other vendors I met). Regardless, I whole heartily recommend meeting with FALKON CONSTRUCTION and Val about for your next project, you will not be disappointed.

He was very professional. I didn’t spend anything as yet. I just took the estimate, and we’re still deciding on which way to go with the project. The experience with him so far has been excellent. He was personable, and he answered all the questions. He actually made the appointment. He corresponded on the phone, and he answered his emails He’s done a lot of work, and I’ve seen his work. I will use his services again in the future if I need to.

After contacting Falkon, Val came out and surveyed the fence. He indicated that due to it's size, a permit would be required. He was very receptive to our questions. He took the necessary measurements and said that he would email us with the estimate, as well as permit information. After reviewing the initial estimate, we noticed that the red brick cap was not included in the estimate. We emailed the issue back to Val and he promptly sent us a revised estimate, reflecting the change. Val was very professional throughout the process. Ultimately, we decided to go with another company, because Falkon's price quote was much higher than the other quotes we received. Having said that, I will definitely consider using them for my next job.

We got three bids (all from Angie's List), two around $1,700 and the other at $5,000. (the 3rd bidder apparently didn't want my business!). The 2nd bidder simply wasn't nice. Val was just as prompt and professional as the 2nd contractor, but Val was also a nice person on the phone and in person - so I went with my instincts. The job was too small for him personally, so Val sent in his foreman, who also turned out to be his brother-in-law Charlie (which made me a bit apprehensive - which I needn't have been). Charlie and his crew came out on Day One when they said they would. Turns out that Charlie is a PERFECTIONIST and they did a FANTASTIC job. He lad the new bricks on the first patio perfectly. The previous owner had rebar and concrete under the bricks and they were perfectly laid out originally. Unfortunately we were forced to rip out a 3-foot wide strip of brick because our electrical cables were buried, and we had upgraded the electrical (this was the only option per LA DWP). I threw two glitches at him and he handled them like a pro. The first was that the bricks matched the first patio but didn't match the 2nd patio as well. I asked Charlie about it and he very nicely said that those were the closest match. I insisted on seeing others and the next day he brought out 4 other types of bricks, new and used. And to my mild embarrassment, Charlie was right: The bricks he originally brought matched the 2nd patio the best. I'm sure that the 2nd contractor would have argued or whatnot - this way, my mind was placed at ease that these were the most closely matching.. The 2nd glitch I threw into the mix was basically asking him to do something that I had overlooked (it was a tiny area that no one would have noticed except me) after I did the final inspection with Charlie (I did one more with my partner and that's when I discovered it). Charlie had already packed and was ready to go. I showed him the area and asked him what he would charge and he asked me what I'd like to pay him (remember, these are nice people!) and I offered him what I thought was fair. No complaining, not a negative word, just a smile on his face to ease my 2nd embarrassing mistake. To summarize: Great work (number one in importance of course) professional/courteous (he took off his shoes to use the bathroom!), good price and excellent value. AND nice.
Description of Work: We have 2 brick patios that needed bricks to be replaced + 2 brick stairs. One area that needed matching and replacing was about 3 feet wide and 14 feet long, the other areas were a bit smaller. Plus, we had "odds and ends" areas that needed fixing and brick replacement (we have a lot of brick work around our home).

Val came out, made an assessment and provided a fair estimate. He explained his assessment to me so that I would understand his estimate. Then, he worked with the insurance company to make sure they understood and were in agreement. During the few days the crew worked on the wall, they arrived on time, they were very professional, nice workers and left the place cleaned up -- almost better than when they arrived. Would definitely hire them again for other work and recommend them to others.

Val promptly sent me an estimate and made himself easily available during the bidding process to answer my questions. His crew did the work in a timely fashion, cleaned up after themselves, and performed a nice job. He also sent me photos during and after the process which was critical to me as I live 1200 miles away from the rental property they were repairing. I will definitely use Val again if the need arises.

Contacted Falkon through the Angie's List web site, Val called to set up an appointment the next day. Val took careful notes and advised on various options. Val is very knowledgeable and listened to the issues and concerns. The estimate was in my email inbox when promised within a few days. After deciding to proceed with the project, the contract was promptly delivered in my email. Val patiently answered the questions I had about the project. The first day is was demolition and setting the pavers. The team made quick work of the demolition and cleaned up nicely along the way. They checked multiple time to make sure the slope was correct and that the draining of the water was considered. I really appreciated the time taken to make sure it was done correctly. The second day was the pour of the concrete. Again the team made sure that the drainage and the slope would be correct. The worked late into the evening to put the final finish on the concrete when it was appropriately dry. They didn't cut corners to get out sooner. The Falkon motto is "Doing it Right!" and I couldn't agree more. Last day was removing the forms. Val took care of removing the forms and filled soil around where the forms were and did the final clean up around the property. I would use Val and Falkon again in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: Demo and haul away an existing 10' x 10' patio and an a walkway. Replace the patio and walkway and extend a walkway adjacent to the patio 21 square feet. Also, there was an existing 10' x 12' square of pavers/bricks that were just set in sand. Had Val, pull up all the pavers and bricks and reset them with the proper foundation.

I can't make enough positive comments to describe Val and his crew. Val is professional, intelligent and personable. He does his work precisely and expertly. His crew is hard-working and conscientious. Val takes your ideas and concerns seriously. Val and his crew arrive promptly and make the whole area neater than it was. Their cleanup is superb. They all go the extra mile for you. Val looks out for your best interest and insists on professional work from other contractors involved in his project. I have received many compliments regarding Val's work from friends and neighbors. Val and his crew are the best.
Description of Work: Val's crew constructed a 16"X145LF cinder block wall, including 16 41" pilasters around the perimeter of my front yard. They installed 2 concrete walkways and moved and adjusted existing sprinklers. They removed a section of existing walkway, widening it at the sidewalk to allow for a wider gate entry. They also constructed a platform for the sliding driveway gate track, a curb to prevent mud from flowing onto the track and a platform for the gate operator. They built up 2 courses of block wall in the backyard.

On the morning of Sep 22, 2011, I telephoned Val & he came out to the house the same afternoon to meet with us & give us an estimate to replace our driveway and walkway. On Oct 8, I notified Val that we would like Falkon to replace our driveway & walkway. When I reminded Val that we wanted the driveway apron replaced and that a permit would need to be taken out for that portion of the driveway, his demeanor changed from one of eagerness to one of being imposed upon. I became aware that Falkon's contract states that: "All required permits, architectural, structural and planning documents will be at the expense and responsibility of owner, unless otherwise pre-negotiated terms are set by owner and performing contractor on written contract". As a result, we ended up driving to the County Public Works office to pick up the permit. In my other dealings with contractors, it was the contractor that picked up the permit as a part of the permit process. Demolition of the driveway and walkway was scheduled for Sat., Oct 22nd at 8:00 am. At 7:30 am Val arrived and we discussed what was to be done that day. Val's demolition person was running late and didn't arrive until 9:00 am and when he did arrive he did not have a sledge hammer to demolish the walkway steps. As a result, three steps of the walkway were not demolished. I later found out that Val unilaterally decided not demolish them since they were going to be tiled over. On Mon., Oct 24, Val's team arrived at 7:30 am and work began at 8:00 am. We talked about the walkway and making the new steps 4 to 5" high instead of making them the same height as the original steps. On Mon. and Tues., the rebar was installed, Val picked up the tile that we had ordered, and the tile was laid down over that portion of the walkway that hadn't been demolished. On Wed., the driveway was poured. During the pouring of the driveway our backyard hose was used and the connecting PVC pipe pulled out from its connection causing water to bubble out all over the place creating a muddy mess. I would not be writing about this except that there was no reason to stretch our garden hose to the point that the PVC pipe was pulled out of its socket because Falkon had brought a hose to the worksite and could have connected it to the end of our hose. Val's brother did glue back the PVC pipe, but we were left cleaning up the muddy mess. One other thing that we found irksome was that Val had us calling the County to inform the inspector that the driveway was ready for inspection. When we called the County, the person at the County wondered why we were calling. He said that we shouldn't be calling that it is the responsibility of the contractor to call. Despite the ups and downs of this project, we are very pleased with the work. The driveway looks great and is a big improvement over the old one. The water no longer stands and builds up in the driveway. We are also very pleased with the way the walkway turned out and the tile work; in fact, we had Falkon come back in December to tile the new steps that were not tiled over in Oct. During this second job, we were short a few tiles, but Val picked up the tiles that we needed and didn't charge us. Thanks Val.
Description of Work: Demolish and haul away old concrete driveway and walkway. Install drain and pressure mushroom to relieve water flooding in driveway. Install 1/2" (#4) rebar reinforcement and pour Portland-cement driveway and walkway. Install natural stone tile on front porch and walkway.

Response from FALKON CONCRETE-MASONRY-PAVERS
Dear Homeowner, I'm dissappointed with this review as it offers a very segmented portrayal of some of events as it occurred. I take the reviews written by homeowners on Angie's List very seriously as they represent a "raw" reflection of the homeowners experience with the service provider. In all fairness, I would like to take the opportunity to clarify some of the matters. 1.) Permits: Many contractors including myself charge for services provided for obtaining permits. Often for common permits such as block walls etc, I always offer the homeowner the opportunity to be involved in their project and save money by giving them the option to obtain the permits themselves. However, in this case we had to deal directly with LA County Public Works Dept, the permit process was better left to me, and since we did not pre-negotiate the permit terms I would "not" charge them for the time and labor involved for obtaining the permit. I made it clear to the homeowner that I would go directly to the LAPW dept and obtain the permit. The homeowner would only be financially responsible for the acutal permit cost imposed by the city and "not" any labors and time involved on the contractors end to obtain permit. They agreed. On my first visit I acquired all the documents necessary, the LAPW dept required a plot plan drawn to scale and several insurance conditions that had to be met. I returned to the homeowners property to acquire additional measurements required for completion of the "scaled" plot plan I had to design. The LAPW Dept also required that I have my General Liability Insurance policy altered to reflect a certain legal clause necessary to properly cover the La County Public Works and it officers. I worked with my GL Insurance company to make these changes in the "Additional Insured" policy to satisfy the city requirements. Typically my insurance company would charge $250 for this modification in my policy, but due to my long standing relationship the fee was waived. The LAPW Dept also required that we had both General Liability and Workmans Comp coverage up to 2 million dollars. Most small concrete and masonry contractors from my experience don't carry such a "beefy" insurance policy, luckily our insurance policies had these coverage parameters. I submitted all the paperwork and within 48 hrs the permit was available to be picked up. Due to my own scheduling conflicts, I asked the homeowner if they were willing to go down to the nearest (20 min away) public works dept and pick up the permit. They agreed. This was the extent of the homeowners involvement in the permit process. 2.) Inspection: During my visit to the LAPW Dept office it was explained to me that there will be 2 inspections. A.) Form inspection B.) Final inspection after apron was installed. On the days of preparation the homeowner inquired when the inspections would occur, I explained to him exactly as the city specified. I told the homeowner that they may also call and follow-up to verify the inspections for their own satisfaction. I'm not entirely sure with why the homeowner seemed irritated by this because the inspections both went as planned and passed as expected. 3.) Hose & Pvc: I apologize for this incident. I always encourage my guys to work responsibly and respectfully on the construction site and if they don't, they must make things right. I believe as you mentioned my brother made the necessary repairs. I only wished that the homeowner expressed these seemingly personal concerns and irritations so I would have addressed them personally. The review was a shock to me, as the homeowner did not express any signs of dissatisfaction or irritation. They even hired us to complete 2 additional stone projects for the steps and walkway after the driveway was completed. I have put several measures in place to insure we continue to uphold our high standards for customer satisfaction and quality workmanship. We appreciate your business and hope to serve you better in the future.

Val and his team are great! I bought a house that had chain link along one side of the back yard that was broken apart by trees. Val met me at the house for an estimate and was VERY professional. I did not feel like he was taking advantage of a woman - unlike other companies. Out of the 3 estimates that I received, Val was the ONLY one that actually measured the area with a measuring tape as opposed to "stepping it out." He was very upfront about the job and explained the entire process to me. He worked with me on the timing and worked around my schedule. I was very grateful for that. He did everything on time and as promised. His crew even fixed a sprinkler that the tree guys broke when removing the trees. The wall and gates look great! The places that he filled in the gaps look like they were meant to be that way all along. I am very happy with this company and have been referring him to friends.
Description of Work: Removed existing chain link fence and installed a block wall. Also installed 2 gates and patched gaps in existing block walls.
Highly recommend Val and his staff! I found him on Angie's List and am very happy to recommend him to next homeowner in search of a great company.
Description of Work: Val was fantastic. We bid the project out to over 7 companies and he was by far the best in every category. He is forthright and honest and his Site Manager Charlie is a hard worker and very creative. Falkon built an L-shaped BBQ in the backyard with stone. It turned out beautiful. They also did a major driveway expansion in the frontyard. They worked with the city and redesigned the frontyard to expand the driveway to over twice the size. They properly constructed retaining walls/ stairs with flagstone and stone caps...... installed lighting within the walls and stairs and built a custom mailbox. They also resurfaced another retaining to match the flagstone. The driveway itself was redone with over 1200 sq ft of beautiful pavers. The project turned amazing and we would highly recommend Falkon Construction for any masonry and hardscape projects. I can tell you that I am extremely picky and Val exceeded my expectations in every way.

The job was done professinally and looks great!
Description of Work: A portion of backyard block wall fencing fell down. We were planning an open house and wanted it repaired before the coming Sunday. We call Falkon Construction. They came promptly, gave an estimate and planned the work for Saturday. Unfortunately it rained on Saturday so the work had to be postponed. However, it also rained on Sunday, so no open house. The work was done immediately after the rains.

I have since been involved with another job and was again pleased with Val’s follow through.
Description of Work: I am the president of my homeowners association and a licensed architect. We recently had a very good experience with Falkon Construction, a masonry contractor. The work involved the construction for my condominium association of a hundred and twenty running feet of masonry and stucco privacy walls. Val Mataaele, the managing partner on the project was very involved in the coordination of the work. All the owners were very pleased with the completed project as will as the thoughtfulness that had been extended to them by Val and his crew. The masons were very skilled and pleasant to work with.
