+ 0 moreWe couldn't be happier with Val and his crew's work on our backyard. Val worked with the changes we had to make due to our HOA reviews. The entire crew was professional and got the job done in about 7 days. We enjoyed working with them because they were very honest and accommodating to any requests/changes we had. Their expertise in masonry and installing pavers helped us improve some of the initial design elements during construction. Their team is very dedicated to doing high quality work, their eye to detail caught things at the end of the job that I didn't notice. For example, some of the stucco on our planter didn't look quite right to Val at the end, so they went back and redid the stucco work on the planter wall. During the entire job, they were very clean and left the work site in good shape everyday. It's great to work with good people and a contractor who stands with pride behind their work.
Description of Work: We just purchased and moved into a newly built home. The small backyard was left for us to design and build out how we wanted. We designed our small backyard area and asked Falkon to do the following work: Construct raised planter along the perimeter Install concrete pavers Construct wooden screens that matched existing fencing to conceal the A/C unit Install drains in the planter and ground and connect to existing drain line Run irrigation and low voltage wiring into the planters Pour a concrete extension from our main walkway to the backyard.

+ -1 moreThe team came in in and in one day had the channel cut and the base of concrete laid. The next day they finished laying the U channel and it was all perfectly graded to drain toward the street. The workers were polite and very skilled. Val was very prompt in suppling the quote and the quote accurately described the work. He scheduled the job promptly and did the work on the designated date. It was a job very well done for a very fair price.
Description of Work: Val and his team cut a channel along the property line and laid in a U Channel with covering to drain water all the way to the street. The final leg was an underground pipe which emptied out at the end of the driveway. This was to fix a pooling of water all along the property line. In addition they removed a portion of older concrete, filled it with decomposed granite and laid some flagstone I had saved from a previous residence.

+ -1 moreI called Falkon and left a message. I received an immediate callback from Val to discuss the project and arrange for him to come by the house to give us a quote. He ended up meeting my wife who liked him and thought he was very professional. His quote came in very detailed and explained everything he was going to do and it was broken out like we asked (we were sharing the cost of the fence with our neighbor). He even included an info sheet from the City of Long Beach regarding the fence requirements. His quote was not the lowest, but after discussing with our neighbor, we thought Val would do the best job so we hired him. He started the work a couple of weeks later permit in hand. He brought his crew and a disposal bin and they started right away. Val was on hand a lot of the time supervising the work. He and his crew were very courteous and cleaned up after themselves every afternoon. They also covered up the sand they brought in for the work. When they started laying the cinder blocks, they had 3 rows done when my wife noticed they were not using the correct color mortar we requested. My wife called Val and let him know (one of the few times he wasn't there). My wife and I told him it was ok to continue with the wrong colored mortar, but he called his crew and made them start over with the correct color mortar. We were impressed (and very happy) that he did that. The job took about 4 days, but there was some considerable delays due to the Long Beach city inspectors. We were very happy with the work and the contractor. We would definitely hire Val again.
Description of Work: Tore down an old wood fence separating my house from a neighbors and built a 35 foot cinder block fence in its place. Also added a little cutout area with concrete landing for my trash cans.

+ -1 moreI contacted the company to bid on a job for flagstone installation. The job was to demo existing concrete, lay two pathways of flagstone, and create a front door landing. The owner contacted me immediately (within 24 hours) and scheduled to come out within a day or so. He arrived on time and was very professional. We reviewed my plans and he looked at the area for about 10 minutes asking me to send details via email. I send him an architecture diagram with measurements and never heard from him again. I should have known something was wrong when he spent such little time at my house and didn't measure or write down anything. The lack of response and professionalism directly reflects their business and workmanship. I would not do business with this company at all.

From the first time, I contacted Val Mataele of Falcon Masonery to the completion of the various jobs that his company has completed for me, every thing has been extremely professional. Val {contractor], and Charley[ foreman], and their great crew are just incredible! Val is very detailed in all aspects of the project, willing to make changes and addtions, as was in my case, with every thing still moving very smoothly. Val stays in constant contact with you, consulting with you BEFORE any options are carried out! Charley and his crew are very impressive. They always show up on time! They are honest, courteous, and very hard working! These men will spoil you! They work so hard and quickly that the next contractor you hire will likely be a big disappointment as again happen in my case! My property was in extremely bad shape when decided to join Angies List to try to find a contactor for the various projects that needed completed. I contacted three contractors to get the intial bid on the retaining wall along with a redwood fence constructed on top. Falcon was the only contractor who could construct both the retaining wall and the wooden fence. All bids being in the same ball park, I chose Falcon,the best contractor decision in my life! Val and his company have completely transformed my home from one that was extremely run down and embarrassing {people actually left notes in my mailbox, telling me how terrible my property looked from the street} to one of the nicer looking homes on our block. Believe me, these guys will make you happy!
Description of Work: Val, Charley, and their crew demolished approximately 55 feet of wooden fence on east side of our house. They replaced it with approximately 196 feet of new redwood fencing extending it all the way to the front of our house, adding two wooden gates (front and back of house}, and a 18 inch high retaining wall. Next they added a very attractive redwood fence around our pool equipment with gates to make it functionable for the pool man. Then they tore out the old existing concrete driveway, along with a broken sidewalk on the east side of house. Then they poured a beautiful 700 feet driveway and an sidewalk with brick ribbon which is really worth the extra cost. They also added a small retaining wall separately our property from our neighbors, a small brick border around around our front planter, bricked our front concrete porch area, even gave us at no extra expense a brick column for our mailbox. The next project started with excavating and installing a new 46 ft by 3 ft street sidewalk. Then they installed a beauitiful brick retaining wall approximately 92 ft x 3 ft in front of our house along with a beautiful brick step sidewalk along the driveway They then brought in topsoil to fill in the retaining wall area to make it level. They built a custom 3 ft fence on top of this area, then added drains, sod, and sprinklers. Along the newly created front yard they added another brick ribbon sidewalk around the front yard and continued around our garage and extended it to our side porch which they also enlarged. They tore out an ugly wire fence along the backside of our garage and added 125 ft of new redwood fencing with another two wooden gates[front and back of garage] along both the east and west of our property. Also they added more sod in our in our backtyard. Despite the fact that carpentry jobs are not something that they want to get involved with, Charley agreed to also do two jobs, [1] Remove and replace the very large wooden beam that extends horizontally across the top of the garage door that was damaged by termites. [2] Remove the old wooden shingles on the front side of our house [these were roofing shingles that only belong on a roof] and replace them with redwood paneling and trim that matches the rest of front of house. I'm extremely happy with everything!

+ 0 moreI requested several quotes from various masonry vendors in my area and Val (Falkon Construction) was the only one to call me back the same day to schedule an appointment. The other vendors were not very prompt and I had to call several times leaving messages before they returned by calls. I met with Val and reviewed the work requirements. He provided a estimate that evening. I had some additional work requirements and he quickly revised his estimate for me. His crew arrived on time and performed the work as outlined. He hauled away the debris, moved the excess dirt to the other planters, and power washed to block wall the next day. He finished on time and my son's handball court looks great. I would definitely hire Val again.
Description of Work: My son wanted a handball court so we need to have the 23 feet of a brick planter removed and leveled with concrete. The existing planter sprinkers needed to be re-set under ground level below the new concrete.

+ 0 moreAWESOME! They were at our home Saturday morning 30 minutes EARLY and ready to start work! Yes...I said EARLY. How many contractors do you know that actually show up for a job early?? They immedately set up their work areas, laid out tarps in the street to contain the construction debris and got busy working. There were 4 members on the team. All were professional, polite and are you ready for this...they actually asked questions to make sure they were doing what we wanted them to do...they didn't assume anything. The job was completed 1/2 day early and it was perfect. FALKON has set a new standard for residential contractors to aspire to. Will definately use them again!!
Description of Work: Repair 50 year old cinderblock wall. Remove deteriorating blocks and grount and replace with new blocks, grout and rebar to make the fence more secure. Replace new caps on all block walls.

+ 0 moreI live out of state and needed some concrete work perfomed at a rental property in Orange County. Thanks to Angie's List, I had a choice of recommended companies. I spoke with a few concrete companies and received bids. I chose Falkon Construction and couldn't be happier.
Description of Work: Part of concrete driveway was broken off due to heavy RV driving off the edge of concrete onto the lawn. Reviewed Angie's list and spoke with a few of their recommended companies. Val Mataele, of Falkon Construction, was responsive to my questions and visited the rental property. Val called me with estimate and also emailed to me: (1) estimate and description of concrete work to be done, (2) photo of damaged concrete area along with marked area to be replaced, (3) Certificate of Liability Insurance, (4) Certificate of Worker's Compensation Insurance, (5) Referrals . Due to my living out of state, I asked for a repair date that would coincide with my travel schedule. Val changed his work assignment to accomodate me. The crew showed up on time,and were professional, courteous, friendly, thorough, and neat. The work was completed within the time frame promised and to my satisfaction. All concrete debris was removed and the wet concrete area was marked with caution tape. I would highly recommend Falkon Construction for concrete work.

+ -1 moreI called four people and they are the only ones that called me back. After they gave me the estimate I asked them to send me an estimate without permitting by the city and he never did. They were very prompt coming over. He seemed to know what he was doing. He promised the estimate within 48 hours and it took over a week. The estimate was quite high. I haven't had much luck because I haven't been able to get anyone to call me back. I think I would consider using them. He was very slow getting the original estimate and I haven't ever received the second estimate.
Description of Work: I got an estimate from Falkon to replace a block wall in the backyard that is leaning. The estimate was with the permitting by the city.

+ 0 moreVal arrived promptly to assess and take measurements of the fence in order to put together an estimate for us. This process revealed several hidden challenges (e.g. the wall to be built would separate my neighbor's backyard from the side of my house so it needed to be a certain height; our properties are on a slope and therefore, at different elevations). Val did some extra engineering on the design of the wall and was in constant communication with me, my neighbors, and our city hall to make sure that the plans were up to code and what all parties wanted. Val worked through what I considered to be a very tedious process of submitting requests to the city and waiting on approvals from all of us with tremendous patience, professionalism, and up-front honesty. When all the paperwork was completed and permit pulled, Val's crew came in and worked diligently and meticulously on the wall, putting it together and correcting minor flaws all within the time estimated. The wall was executed cleanly and with precision. The crew raked and cleaned the area to complete the job. We were very satisfied with the work, to say the least.
Description of Work: Tore down and hauled away a broken chain-link fence and the tons of ivy growing on it; built a precision-block concrete wall 6' x 55' in its place.

+ 0 moreVal and his team were absolutely wonderful and professional. He and his team showed up everyday on time. They were very clean, despite all of the dust. We have nosey condo owners who went out to inspect their work but Val's team didn't complain. The column that was chopped down looks exactly like all of the other columns now. The wall is perfect. Because of all of the wet weather we've been having, there are a few cracks, but Val offered to touch them up for free. We couldn't be happier with his work.
Description of Work: We had a crumbling brick/stucco wall around our condo complex. It was an eyesore. Big chunks of stucco were missing and some of the underlying brick was exposed. We solicited three bids and by far Falkon had the most complete and detailed bid. We met with Val, the owner, and he explained in great detail why our wall was falling apart and how we should consider fixing it. Although he had a couple of other jobs, he took his time to educate us on proper masonry work to make our wall last much longer. His team removed the stucco, sandblasted off the paint to give the new stucco more adhesion, and then restuccoed the wall. We also asked him to chop down a very tall column that looked out of place compared to the other columns.

+ 2 moreI didn't use them or anybody because it was a lot of money. They were prompt and came when they said they would. They delivered a detailed bid within a couple of days. I will talk to them again. My only concern was that some of the other contractors seemed to have more knowledge of the local permitting process in my area. They were from a neighboring city and didn't seem to have that knowledge.
Description of Work: I got an estimate from Falkon to demo and remove some fencing, put up a block wall and leave a little area so I could put up a privacy screen. They were going to stucco both sides.

+ 0 moreThe gentelmen who came out to give us the estimate was on time, very professional and polite and gave us information to keep in mind with the type of wall we needed. He emailed an estimate to us in a very timely manner and we felt it was a fair estimate for the job. Sadly, we did not end up using Falkon Concrete because we decided to add some other home projects and remodeling to the job, so we hired a contractor who could provide all the services that we needed. Our contractor did look at the Falkon estimate and thought it was low, but said he would meet the estimate given to us by them. I would consider using Falkon Concrete if we ever needed any of their services.
Description of Work: We contacted Falkon Concrete when we needed a low wall built in our backyard after the rod iron fencing was removed. We wanted the wall to match our existing planter boxes which were covered in stucco and painted the color of the house.

+ 0 moreFrankly it was amazing. Their reliability and responsiveness couldn't be better. Val Mataele came out promptly and quoted it. He seemed very switched on and his bid was very detailed and prompt with a fair price, so we chose to go with Falkon. (We did get other bids, but the level of detail wasn't there. I didn't get the sense that they were thinking the job through to the level Val was.) The experience never changed from there. They did everything they said they would, when they said they would. The quality of the work is great. They showed up with a full crew so the job moved very fast and right on schedule. When it was done, the final invoice was completely in line with the original quote. Our only issue working with Falkon is that they specialize in concretre, masonry and stone. If they could do our stucco, painting floors and landscaping we'd use 'em! That said, you really get the benefit of a specialist. They don't mess around and are quick on the job with what they do.
Description of Work: Complete hardscape around the house, including stone work, a new driveway, drainage systems, regrading, sprinklers and new SOD.

+ -1 moreI called for many estimates to have the walls repaired and after meeting with several masonry experts, my instincts were with Falkon. They were very prompt in coming out to do the estimate and were extremely fair in their pricing. The one thing I responded to the most was that Val did not try and upsell me things that I did not need. The team was very courteous and friendly, they were thorough and the work looks FANTASTIC. If I had to nitpick anything, it had to be the delay in getting me the actual quote. That being said, knowing how good they are, I can only imagine they were swimming in business and the delay was forgiven. Excellent job by a friendly and extremely competent company. I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Because we occupy an old (and I do mean old) building, the interior bricks above the windows were starting to crumble. We needed Falkon to shore up and replace the bricks while adding additional support to keep them in place for a long time to come.
