I didn't write down his name, but the person I spoke with on the phone gave me good advice on what to check for to see if there was anything amiss. He didn't offer to come over (their office is not close to my house) but I felt his approach was very reasonable and it was helpful.

We needed retrofit wall insulation and after checking around all the listings through AngiesList, Yelp, and others, we found that only Bay Valley and SDI does retrofit wall insulation work. We went with Bay Valley because the price was reasonable and they responded quickly and promptly (can't say this about SDI*). Joel was our estimator and he came out promptly at the time and date indicated. He was thorough and thoughtful on how he approached the job, not overselling or recommending things we didn't need. We live in an older house and he appreciated the home and looked for the most non-invasive method to take care of our un-insulated exterior walls. Bay Valley's approach is to come in from the exterior walls with the typical 2-hole process (high/low) to blow in the cellulose insulation. They sent two guys in and despite a couple snags in the job, they finished the job in one full day. Afterwards, they plugged the holes, textured and primed, and the next day came in to paint (our-supplied) paint. I was really amazed how well and seamless it all looked afterwards. They did a good job cleaning and even moved the cabinets in the garage back where they originally were. The real result? The mornings have been a little bit warmer than last week, but so far the heater has barely turned on over the past couple days. The house already feels warmed and less temperature fluctuations. We already got brand-new attic insulation last Fall, but the wall insulation really did the trick. A definite recommend to anyone who needs a good team to do insulation in their home. * dealing with SDI was a nightmare, unfortunately. With *several* calls about being in the ER, then lots of other excuses, it just didn't seem like they wanted to do the job or something. I originally made the request in August and this morning on Nov 10, I got a phone call inquiring if we still needed insulation done. sigh.

Joel came and did an estimate for us today. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable and delightfully honest. I previously had another company come out and give me an estimate. That company wanted to charge ~$4,000 to remove existing attic insulation and add R38. They also wanted to charge ~$3,000 to add wall insulation. Joel inspected my attic and told me the insulation was actually R30 already and looked to be in good condition. He didn't recommend adding any more. Joel also inspected the walls and it turns out it already had insulation in them. THANK YOU Joel for being so honest and saving us a ton of money! I would highly recommend him (and Bay Valley Insulation) to everyone I know and to others on Yelp. Also, he did write us a very reasonable estimate to boost our insulation to R48 if we wanted to go the extra mile.

I thought Joel the guy that gave the estimate was nice and educated on the work to give an accurate estimate of the job. Scheduling took a little time because they are busy. Guy, the owner, insists that his customers be satisfied. His workers first came in the pouring rain so the paint job was not done great and insulation was left around the house. Guy assured me the insulation was not dangerous but had his workers come back first to fix the paint job then again to clean up better when I felt there was too much insulation left around the house. Also paint was spilled on our drive-way so they fixed that issue. The workers get very dirty with their shoes so I would recommend asking them to remove their shoes if you have concerns about dirt in your house.

Insulating the exterior walls of our two story, 1700 sq ft house, involved drilling holes between each stud, blowing in insulating material, plugging the holes, spackling over the holes, priming and finally painting the holes. Two man crew was very efficient in setting up scaffolding and then doing the work described. We got a chance to see what the insulation looks like inside the wall when the force of the insulation popped out a built-in bookcase that was not secured. Its a solid blanket of insulation, filling in the entire space. Very impressive. The results have been very noticeable. The house feels more comfortable, and the heater turns on less frequently. We should have done this years ago. Last part of the project was to blow additional insulation into the attic, which went very quickly. Overall, the project took 2 very long afternoons/evenings to complete. It makes a mess around the outside of the house, but they did a good job of cleaning up each day.

This is my second time using Bay Valley. They did an excellent job and their attention to detail is great. They even left me some extra insulation to fill in some voids behind low voltage (TV, cat5) boxes/ wall plates once I wire them up. I will be using them again in the future when I insulate and add drywall into the garage. Great team and very responsive. The office was able to accommodate my drifting schedule with no problems. The difference in the house temperature was noticeable immediately. The interior of the house is much more stable in temperature over the course of the day. The new insulation is doing its job great and should pay for itself quickly in lower utility bills. A+

The guy I spoke to was professional and did return my call promptly however he sounded as if he just didn't want the job since it's a condo. I explained that the upstairs carries a lot of heat in summer and colder in winter so we are interested in blown-in insulation. He stated that no amount of insulation would make a difference in the temperature - this makes no sense to me whatsoever. Isn't the point of having a well insulated house is to maintain an even temperature? He just kept saying 'I'm 90% sure that your condo is up to code for when they were built in 1980'. Great, I'm sure it was up to code but now the insulation needs upgrading. He basically was uninterested in the job and instead suggested getting air conditioning.

Response from Bay Valley Insulation Inc
Insulating condos is not a problem, but any home built in 1980 or later is new or almost new by present-day insulation standards (ie codes). Insulation in walls and vaulted ceilings described here is both inaccessible to additional insulation, so cannot be upgraded, and it's also encapsulated, so protected and performance remains constant or nearly constant over life of home. Insulation only reduces and does not eliminate heat convection in multi-story homes, often a problem to some homeowners on very hot days when there is no A/C. Being told other things by less knowledgeable contractors can make projects more difficult, but asking questions and listening to the answers from the professionals always works best.

First pass they were unable to properly blend existing roof line with new roof line. This was partly because of the framing discrepancies but they initially assured me that they can take care of it. When I called back, they were first reluctant to fix the problem but after some back and forth they agreed to fix it only after I committed to properly shim the roof line connection. Once I shimmed, they redid the work and the results were as expected. Bottom line, if you have an unusual situation, make sure you oversee the progress, but they are pretty fast and professional with routine roof work.

The estimator came in the previous day and checked out the whole house. I was thinking of insulating the crawl space as the floors were cold in the morning. The estimator said the first steps would be to check attic and wall insulation and if that didn't take care of it. then they would insulate the crawl space. He took a look around and said only attic insulation was needed at this time since walls were fine. He also said that if floors were still cold after the attic insulation, they would come back and do the crawl space as well. I called them later in the day and asked them to go ahead with the insulation. I left a message and promptly received a call back and they scheduled service for the very next day. The price quoted was also much cheaper than a previous quote I received. They came in to do the job and cleaned up after themselves. All in all, I am very satisfied with the service and will use them again if needed.

The Good: Pretty good experience all around. The crew was a bit late, but they did call well in advance and let me know. No problems there. The 2 man crew was polite and did clean up the job site when they were done. The insulation was installed properly for the most part. (see below) The Bad: My only real complaint was that they buried 4 attic vents in the insulation. I was able to easily remove the pieces that were blocking the vents. I didn't specially say to NOT block the vents, but I would assume an insulation company would know to not do this. Easy fix, so I'm not too upset about it. Overall: Very good price, availability was quick, and the installers were easy to work with and didn't leave a mess. I would definitely use them again, but would suggest if you do, to make sure you mark and/or double check your attic vents before they leave. My room didn't have drywall put in yet, so this was easy for me to fix. Alternatively, install the vent protector metal or plastic "ducts" first.

Glad to see vent issue was resolved per customer's needs, and appreciate the positive feedback. Mechanical means to prevent eave vents from being blocked by fiberglass blanket insulation are normally not necessary, but can be used at the request of the builder to address unusual venting situations. Inspectors usually want to see blanket insulation installed up to the top plate where eave vents are present, but thin enough to allow air circulation behind the insulation, although historically the practice has often been to simply keep the insulation well back from the eave vents. Installer was sure he followed the correct installation procedure, so without the opportunity to go back and see the work, we can't be certain of an installation error. It is always best to call us anytime with any questions or concerns, so we have the opportunity to promptly address them and make any corrections, if needed.

This project went very well. The estimator was extremely knowledgeable and was able to walk me through the options, educated me on the rebate process, and gave me a breakdown of the steps in the project. He was also very careful in his examination of my home noting areas that would need special attention to get the insulation in properly (around my fireplaces). The work took two days, as the walls needed to be done(-involves cutting disks out of the existing siding, concrete or drywall of every external facing wall) and blowing in the insulation and then patching and repainting. In the attic, they have to make sure that they can blow the insulation over the lighting fixtures and also it can be very tight in some of the spaces that they need to get to. The team worked extremely hard and with great precision. I was initially nervous about having disks cut out of the sides of my house and the repainting but these guys are true professionals and you can't see where the work was done. The rebate process went really smoothly and I received my rebate in a couple of weeks. I am also extremely pleased with the results of having a better insulated home. It stays much warmer in the winter (spent less on heating during the cold snaps) and so far this spring, have not had to even think about using air conditioning. The owner also called me to check in on my experience. Very happy in Saratoga
Description of Work: Bay Valley insulated the exterior walls and the attic of my home. This house was built in 1963 and there was no insulation in the walls and only R-11 in the attic. Most if not all the problems were internally. First off the second technician, who was the secondary help, was smoking in my garage, which is unacceptable. In the interior of the house there were at least three holes than were not filled properly, along with an entire wall where the nails had popped out because of insulation. These were not fixed by the technicians where they finished. In addition there were three hammer indentures that were made in the walls to locate drill holes were not filled in. Three holes in the garage also had to be redone. The sizes of these holes are 1.5 inch diameter, so they are not small. These issues are fundamental to the craftsmanship; making and patching holes, along with looking for popped nails is not a one time or rare event, this is what these guys do, so having missed something that is so basic is an indication of poor quality. Customer service: The owner of the company was helpful in trying to fix the mess. However at first conversation I would have had to wait a week before they came to my house to fix the mess. So I decided to buy my own compound and patch some of the holes, which I did. Later on that day the owner had a change of heart and sent the second technician back to our house. This individual did paint the outside, and helped patch the nails. However we had two sets of paints and he painted the wrong color on an entire wall! All he had to do was look at the other can, or communicate with me, and I was present in the house at the moment. The third time the owner sent over the more sincere technician. He arrived one hour past the two hour window, and was stuck in evening traffic. This individual painted the wall and fixed the remaining four holes in the garage (using my material). Overall impression: There is a clear lack of value either in terms of price or quality of the worked performed. The technicians missed doing the basic tasks, which is not a good sign. However the owner was sincere and did send his men, but there was no urgency at his end, they all came when they were available versus trying to fix the job not done well. For my part I upheld the entire contract, paid the full agreed upon price despite the poor quality of initial work. Given the price and quality of service I would be hesitant to give a good recommendation.
Description of Work: Decided to get a quote from Bay Valley along with two other insulating companies from Angie’s list. My criteria were looking for A rated companies which have generally overall favorable comments too. We wanted to get external insulation, which was non-existent in our house, along with checking if there was adequate insulation in the attic. Of the three A rated companies, One of the companies only did fiber glass, and would make holes inside the house. We decided not to go with that company because we did not want fiber glass blow in insulation. The competition was between Bay Valley and another insulation company out of Cupertino, which had better ratings and lower price quoted for their services. We decided to go with Bay Valley because they were close to our house --- a comfort factor. The services rendered: Blow in cellulose insulation for exterior walls (1,400 sq. ft.), and two internal walls to dampen the noise around and between two bathrooms. There were two technicians that came over to do the job, one was making holes in the exterior of the house and was filling in the insulation and the other was simply patching up and supporting him. The exterior walls were done properly with good insulation; in fact this technician was very sincere about his job and it was visible that he wanted to do a good job. Overall the exterior insulation job was done well, with good patch work for the holes. Our house has wood and stucco on the exterior and both the surfaces were patched well.

Work on our own repairs, several slightly elevated popped nails and some hammer indentations -items that can be difficult to catch or notice, was fairly minimal and fixed same day as reported by customer, with no prior talk of any delayed scheduling whatsoever. Customer doing some of his own work in advance was not necessary as we prefer fixing our own work. Customer was given prompt, same-day service when he notified us of problem, and workers are sure the few patches in question were damaged after their work, as they take much longer to dry than exterior patches, and call backs on several patches that are simply not done right simply don't happen. The paint was put on some wrong patches on one short exterior wall because worker understood he was instructed to paint them by customer and it was similar to other color, and not yet dried to show it's final color, which may also be why customer provided just one color of paint the day the job was done, and later had to obtain the other color paint. This paint was easily fixed at a time approved by customer. On second call back, the paint repair work only was what was requested by customer, and worker stopped by on his way home from work, and so did not bring along patching materials because customer did not request patch work to be done till after worker arrived. Interior walk-throughs are standard practice when beginning a wall insulation jobs, but not so much at most jobs end due to experience showing a lack of sufficient need. Training on filling walls with insulation is the most intensive part of job training, to ensure a good insulation pack, and is also something a customer doesn't see, so that is where it is most important and a trained worker doing the filling will always be well versed in answering questions with a process that is rather complex to most people. Patching questions are fairly simple to answer by comparison, and patches receive the most attention by customers. Customer reported cost of work was later reduced by about 1/3 from standard PG&E rebates, making the value of such work quite obvious to any homeowner interested in year round comfort and heating and a/c cost savings, not to mention quiet and elimination of mold from some homes where it is an issue, and less drafts. Word of these rebates should get around because they may not be available after end of this year.

The company was extremely responsive to my email request for information and set a date for 1/31; however, they had a cancellation much earlier in the month. They called and arranged to be at my house at 4:00 p.m. (incredible to be able to begin a job like this after my work ends). Unfortunately, the installers were tied up on another job. They called and asked if they could come later. I said definitely. They finally arrived at 6 p.m. and still did all the work. They went above and beyond to keep the house clean and were extremely accommodating. The insulation made an immediate difference. This was a great company and a great crew!
