Description of Work: Insulation installers were polite, explained what they were doing and how, did a complete job and cleaned up after themselves. They did a combination of insulation products in two different attic spaces in my house. Owner, Guy, was responsive to each of my phone calls and very courteous. Would definitely use them again.

The estimator was on time (ahead of schedule, actually). He quickly assessed that there wasn't any work to be done because the current insulation is adequate, and the pieces missing wouldn't improve our cold living room situation. While we appreciate the estimator being honest, we were less than impressed by the way he talked to us and handled the apt. He acted annoyed, like he didn't want to be there, and like we were wasting his time. We know they need to run a business, and understand it must be disappointing to get to an estimate apt and find out there is no work to be done, but we don't know how we could have foreseen this. We believe they should have been customer service oriented during the entire apt and this was not the case.
Description of Work: We requested an estimate for improving the insulation in our crawl space. The services consisted of one visit to survey / diagnose what could / should be done.

Response from Bay Valley Insulation Inc
Sounds like just a communication problem. But finding fully insulated homes is not a disappointment to an estimator since it is a somewhat common part of the job. The result should be a homeowner who is happy to learn their home is already well-insulated, and that they're not being sold something they don't need.

Joel came out to give us an estimate to insulate our 2100 sq foot, two story home. He arrived right on time and was very professional. He checked our attic and found that we had only R11 when R38 is recommended for our area. Additionally, we had no insulation in our exterior walls. He wrote up a very detailed estimate and explained the proceedure thoroughly. He provided two separate quotes for the walls and attic and included the PG&E rebate for each. After receiving a few other quotes, we decided to go with Bay Insulation. They were able to make an appointment within a weeks time. The installers were about an 90 minutes late on the first day, and I had to call to find out if everything was still on schedule. When they did arrive, they got right to work. They did almost all the walls on the first day and did a very thorough job. They cleaned up everything even though they were coming back the next day to finish the attic. Overall the installers were very professional and worked very hard. Only two guys did the entire job in two days. They were very professional and did a great job and did more than I expected. My only complaint is that they arrived late on the first day without a phone call. But they still completed the job in the estimated time and did a great job.
Description of Work: Blew cellulouse Insulation on both attic levels of our 2100 sq. foot two story home. Blew cellulouse insulation in all the exterior walls. Installed bat insulation in all the kick walls (half walls surrounding the attic area). Installed bat insulation surround all the vents so the blown insulation could go right up to the bat insulation withougt leaving any gaps. Filled, patched and primed the holes in the stucco, which were drilled in order to install the wall insulation. They offered to also paint the holes to match our current house color, but we don't have any of the old paint and plan to repaint the exterior anyway, and therefore declined.

Joel came to my house on time. He confirmed that the ceiling insulation is R-30. It works fine in this area. Instead of adding floor insulation, he recommended adding forced air circulation to equalize the first floor and the second. In our case, insulating floor is not cost effective.

12/29/10 Bay Valley Insulation sent over provided an estimate to insulate the outside walls of the home. I accepted their bid and set Thursday 1/13/11 to complete the installation. I received a call from Bay Valley Insulation Tuesday evening 1/11 requesting to re-schedule due work backup caused by bad weather. We re-scheduled for Saturday 1/15/11. They would be on site between 11am and 1pm. Received a phone call Saturday at 1:30 saying they were running behind schedule and would should be there in about 1hr (2:30pm). They arrived at 3:15pm. Once on site they explained why they were late, looked over the project then immediately began work. The the job was finished at 7:15pm. I observed them while they worked, they worked efficiently and took pride in their quality of work. They did a great job cleaning up after finishing the job.. I'd love to give them an A+ but because they failed to properly estimate the time they would be there and not re-contacting us to notify us they would be later than expected I rate them A-.

Overall the experience is pleasant, i would recommend to my friends who also need an insulation. Their price is very reasonable, though not the most competitive quote we received. It took them 3 hrs to complete the job. The difference after the insulation is noticeable, the furnace runs less frequently. They also provided the invoice in the format that PG&E rebate can be applied conveniently by separating the material and labor cost. The only problem we had is that we got a couple of light scratches on our floor underneath the entrance to the attic, we noticed that after they left. They did cover the floor during installation, but apparently it was not covered enough considering the weight of their machine.

Kevin Byler came and looked at our house and was very honest and told me that "he would be happy to sell me insulation" but it would not make a significant difference in our case. He was on time and I really appreciated his honesty. I would do business with him in the future in a heartbeat.

I thought they did a really excellent job on the estimate; the estimate told us exactly how much they would be charging and how much we would get on rebate and they were exactly right on all of it. They were personable and the job they did was professional. The insulation has had the effect that they said it would. I was very happy with the whole thing.

After initial work, the company owner called us to ask if they could return and add more insulation. They were concerned that it might not have compacted sufficiently because of low water pressure. Cellulose must be misted before being installed. They returned that afternoon and sprayed more in - all at their expense.

He Literally Peeled out of my driveway, and no I'm not exaggerating I called for a 1pm estimate, and an estimator Joel, showed up 20 minutes early. Which is a good thing I guess, but he was a bit grumpy. However, since I was on my lunch break I had scheduled another Insulation estimation at 12:15pm (of course I always do a second estimate as I wasn't sure how much this should cost) and was just finishing up when Joe got there. I met Joe at the front door, told him he was early and I was still finishing up inside with someone else and that if he wouldn't mind, to wait 10-15 min so I could finish off with . He asked if he could start measuring outside the house and of course I let him do that. For the next 10 min or so I ran out to him and in to the other guy just to stay on top of things. As he went inside to measure things I pointed out where I wanted insulation, etc., During the course of the conversation all of a sudden he looked at me, said, "you know what, I'm outta here" and stormed off. I was with a friend who witnessed this, as he got in his truck, and literally peeled out of the driveway. My friend and I looked at each other in disbelief. Utterly shocked. We ultimately concluded that he didn't like the fact that there was someone else there also bidding on the job? Which I could understand is slightly uncomfortable, but I can't imagine him thinking he was the only one to bid on the job since he only had 2 reviews on angies list. UPDATE TO RESPONSE: The response below is absolutely untrue. Yes, they showed up early, but 20 minutes early, which was the problem as I was trying to pay attention to the other estimator who was there. I didn't want them to walk thru the house unsupervised for a estimate, without me explaining what I wanted them to do. So I had him wait. While the other estimator was finishing up, writing the estimate in the driveway, I walked over to Joel to be cordial and make him feel like I wasn't completely ignoring him. So I asked him how business was, and how he liked Angies List. Also on where else he gets business. (I actually work at a venture capital firm, so one of the things I do a lot is ask questions of businesses and what the next businesses in particular on the internet can help people). I asked about Service Magic, Yelp, Angies List, etc and how they performed. I was actually trying to help him, letting him know that there's a ton of places to drive business on the web. I guess he thought it was a pitch I guess. Again, literally just stopped me mid sentence, said "i'm outta here" and then peeled out.. BTW, I ended up using SDI Insulation which was awesome, great service, great price and I highly recommend them.

Response from Bay Valley Insulation Inc
It turned out that the member and his friend were a couple of business entrepreneurs who only scheduled the appointment to give a detailed sales presentation for a web-based contractor referral service they were starting up. And though the estimator arrived 10 minutes early, this unannounced presentation AND the estimate couldn’t be completed in the scheduled time for the estimate. Since this would be an imposition on estimator’s later appointments, he had to leave, and felt he was clear about why. It’s okay to be told about a useful product or a service while providing estimates, but, for starters, detailed sales presentations should be announced in advance, and given during a time set aside for them.

The two workers showed up right in the middle of the service window. They told us exactly what they were going to do and how long it would take then starting preparing. They were very careful with our wood floors and started covering them immediately and with good care. When they began making the holes to blow in insulation, the found the house already insulated. They were very nice about cleaning up there stuff with no fuss and getting on their way. They estimated about $1,200 for the work if they had done it, but did not even charge us for the time they were on site. All in all, great company all around.
