?Be Afraid, be very afraid? of Pedro Yanez?s landscaping company ?A Passion for Gardening?. I spent over $8000 dollars to have my back yard completely overhauled; i.e. remove all the existing landscape and install all new landscape. Due to Pedro?s incompetence I have come to find out that I will now have to pay another landscape company $3500 to $4000 to clean up Pedro Yanez?s mess; this estimate is based on 3 estimates I have gotten from independent landscape companies. Please note that I was careful to read the ?Angie?s List? reviews regarding Pedro and the main concern listed by reviewers was that Pedro didn?t seem to speak /understand English well. I now know that he speaks English well enough he just DOES NOT LISTEN to anything you try to tell him. Following is a partial list of concerns that I brought to Pedro attention that he ignored: · I wanted a minimum of 6 irrigations zones Pedro put in 3; I have an ?L? shaped backyard (500 sq. ft.) and my wife has long arrow ?U? shaped garden (6? by 60?). 50% of the lawn and garden are in the shade ½ the day and the other half of the lawn and garden are never in the shade; i.e. by not putting in the proper irrigation zones you can?t properly adjust the amount of water. if I set the valve run time to water the sunny areas with the proper amount of water the shady areas get too much water and if I set the valves to water the shady areas properly the sunny areas get too little water. · I specified 6? popups I got 4? and the popups were buried at 20 degree angles so the either overshoot the area to be watered or dig a ditch directly in front of the sprinkler. · Pedro miscalculated the amount of sod for my back yard so he had to place 2 orders 3 days apart. And yes he ordered two different types of dwarf fescue and it is very obvious. · Pedro overwatered my lawn and garden, watering 4 times a day for 15 minutes, the last watering late at night, to the point he turned the lawn into a mud hole killing almost every plant in the garden and my lawn is now infected with fungus; I now have to place all the sod and most of the plants. · Upon telling Pedro of my concerns with respect to overwatering Pedro told me that he had 20 years? experience and if he killed any plants or lawn he would replace them at his expense. Now that everything is dead or fungus ridden he told me that he has no intention of fulfilling his commitment or to honoring his warranty and that I will have to fix Pedro?s mess at my expense. · Pedro was supposed to tie 2 new drains into my existing drains to protect my yard from flooding. Instead of tying them into the existing main drain pipe he just put drain pipes into the dirt and coved them with a drain grate to make it look like a functional drain. I am lucky I found it before they caused these areas to turned into sync holes and ruin the foundations around my home. · The topsoil Pedro brought in was full of insects and pests, now my entire yard is infested. Pedro will not tell me where he got the topsoil, he claimed he got it at KRC in Poway but when I checked KRC said he did not get it from them. · I paid a lot of extra money to have all the debris removed from my yard (large rocks, old irrigation material, plant liners etc.), it is in the contract, and I have come to find out that Pedro just buried most of it in one section of my wife?s garden; i.e. just dumped topsoil over old mulch, weed barrier, etc. this was intentional not a mistake. · Pedro constantly wanted me to fix his screw-ups; reset sprinklers, reset watering time, haul out stuff he left behind. I refused knowing if I touched anything he would blame his screw-ups on me. Additionally I told Pedro that I did not pay him $8000 so I could do it myself. I could go on and on about the mess Pedro made of my yard but I think the items bulleted above are sufficient to give fair warning to ?Angie?s List? members. Every time I brought up a concern I got Pedro?s ?I have been doing this for 20 years? comment or ?Don?t worry, if I kill it I will fix it at no cost to you?; He definitely will not fix it even if he was capable he is unwilling. The only thing Pedro is really good at is blaming the homeowner for Pedro?s corner cutting, misrepresentations, and his incompetence. The Bottom line is: Avoid Pedro Yanez?s and ?A Passion for Gardening? like the plague!!!
Description of Work: Complete backyard overhaul: Remove old sod, soil, debris, etc. Install all new irrigation, gardens (vegetable and flower), sod, etc. Add raised garden block walls. In essence remove everything and start from scratch so he was not fixing someone else’s mess. It did not help, now someone is fixing his mess.

Response from A Passion For Gardening
At the time the job was completed, the client praised the job that we did. He said he couldn’t believe how beautiful it looked. He was going to invite his coworkers to come and look at it. He even treated us to lunch. His wife recommended our company to her neighbors. One of her neighbors contacted us and we did a landscaping project for them. They were satisfied with our work. The client contacted us on several occasions. I came and adjusted the timer and the sprinkler heads. On one occasion I came and replaced a blown sprinkler head. Next the client complained about fungus developing. I saw no sign of fungus. However there was a burnt area on the sod that look like it was caused by a spillage of fertilizer. The sod company offered to replace the damage section at no extra cost. On another occasion he contacted me saying that certain areas were being overwatered. I came and adjusted the opening on the nozzles to reduce the water flow. I showed him how he can adjust the nozzles. I also provided him with spares in case any of the nozzles went bad. While there, he requested for me to add additional sprinkler line to accommodate some new plants he had purchased. I did this for him at no extra cost even though this was not part of the initial project(contract). The timer for the sprinkler system & drip system were scheduled to water 4 times a day , at different times of the day, for 5 minutes per station. This was to take place only for the first week. On the second week, I set the timer to water 3 times a day for 5 minutes per station. The third week, I set the timer to water 2 times a day for 5 minutes per station. The latest time, for the watering to begin, was 4 pm. Watering was never scheduled to begin late at night. As far as the watering of the plants in the sunny areas versus areas in the shade, we installed twice as many nozzles in the drip system to service the sunny area than we installed on the shady areas. This should have compensated for the different watering needs. The client was correct when he said we did not get our top soil from KRC in Poway. That was my mistake. We purchased the soil from San Pasqual Valley Soils in Escondido, which is an Angie’s List company. This company has A reviews with Angie’s List. Their soils are certified to be insect free, weed free, and fungus free. The soil is described in their invoice as a high nutrient compost used to fertilize and biologically build soil. The initial clean up of the area was massive. We brought a large dump truck to remove the concrete from demolition of walk way, the removal of the old sprinkler lines, old sod, and many large rocks that were dug up and removed. Some of the rocks were placed around the edges of the garden to be used as a border, as requested by the wife of the client. We were hired to create a landscaped space. The maintenance of the space is the responsibility of the owner of the property. As evident from our previous reviews and our awards in 2012 from Angie’s List in the different areas of landscaping, we are not a company looking to take advantage of our customers. We go the extra mile to make our clients happy.

Pedro and his crew cleared the weeds and trimmed the plants. They laid out the landscape fabric and worked around the plants. They covered the fabric with 25 cubic yards of bark. They worked diligently and efficiently all day and returned to finish spreading the bark. They cleaned the area where the bark was dumped. The areas they worked on look great.
Description of Work: Pedro came out and provided a free estimate for the job. I wanted part of my slope covered with landscape fabric and bark or mulch. I live on two acres.

When I first met with Mr. Yanez to make plans he reassured me that he had experience working with real estate agents who told him how much they wanted to spend, then left the planning and implementation to him. I was happy to rely on his expertise. To select plants I went to the zoo and took photos of drought-tolerant plants I liked and emailed them to Mr. Yanez. He installed those plants (and some he added.) He worked very independently - in fact I was on the East Coast while he and his crew did the work. The ground was packed down and needed a lot of work to prepare it for planting, which was done thoroughly. He communicated well with my tenants and incorporated their wishes (which I wanted him to do.) My tenants had brought bricks over because they wanted to make a small patio. Mr. Yanez prepared a level area with edging, the size of the desired patio, at no additional charge. The yard looks great, the fence looks great and looks like it will last a long time, the irrigation system is fine, my tenants are happy. And so am I. When I first met Mr. Yanez I was concerned because I had trouble understanding his speech. I am particularly poor at comprehending accented English. This turned out not to be a problem. Through pictures, email and perseverance we communicated fine.
Description of Work: I had had two large trees removed, stumps ground, leaving the front yard of my rental duplex a wasteland. The irrigation system was decimated. I wanted to have the yard landscaped with drought-tolerant plants, a new irrigation system installed that was suitable to the new plants (but using the valves from the old irrigation system) The picket fence surrounding the yard is old and had significant rot in the posts and some sections. I had gotten an estimate for replacing the fence with a vinyl one for $3000. Mr. Yanez said he would be able to replace, repair and paint the fence for $800. His estimate to replace/repair the irrigation system was also $800. I had bought an Angie's List Big Deal worth $2500 for $1399.Mr. Yanez' final bill was $800 for the fence, $800 for the irrigation and $2220 for the landscaping, a total of $3820. Subtract the Angies List Big Deal worth $2500 and I owed $1320. Well worth it.

I called Pedro and he came to my house for an estimate. He traveled over an hour to get to my house from his normal area. He gave a fair estimate and we hired him by placing a deposit. He and his crew showed up at the time they said they would early in the morning. They worked all day to complete all that we had asked him to do. He hauled away all the spoils of the cleanup too. Pedro and his crew of workers were very pleasant and hard working. They didn't ask for anything - they brought all they needed with them.
Description of Work: Pedro and his crew did an amazing job. Pedro knows plants and trees - and he made my backyard look amazing. I highly recommend him.

Pedro and his crew were great! He arrived and got right to work on figuring out what I needed, how long it would take, and how much it would cost. We made our decisions and he arrived promptly the next day to the work started. The work was professional, thorough, and my back yard has never looked better! We had everything cleaned out, irrigation placed, grass put in, a nice border with bark, and they planted a beautiful tree. I had several other landscapers come out over the past few months, but had difficulty getting estimates back or having anyone show up. Working with Pedro was easy and painless! He really does have a passion for gardening! I would recommend Pedro and his crew to anyone who wants to get the job done right
Description of Work: We had the back yard cleaned of debris, weeds, trash. Irrigation was fixed and routed. Yard was rototilled. grass (sod) and soil were put in. A border of bark with weed cloth underneath was placed. A lime tree was planted. Everything (including my driveway) was cleaned up after they finished.

They came twice, once to look over the yard and come up with ideas for which plants would work best where. Pedro was very helpful in suggesting plants that would work well in certain areas (shade vs direct sun for example) and recommending native plants that do well in our climate. It took awhile before he came back with the plants, but he had great plants and the guys did a really good job pruning and planting the plants where they would go best and they cleaned up everything really well. The plants look healthy two weeks later and some are starting to bloom. I am very happy with the work done, the quality of the plants and the overall improvement they have made to my yard. The only thing I found unexpectedly expensive was the fee he charged to haul away all the pruning and old plant ($200). I really appreciated Pedro's advice about how to keep them healthy and additional advice he provided about other plants and trees already in the yard.
Description of Work: We arranged through Angie's List to take advantage of their Big Deal which included 18 plants and the labor to plant them. We paid extra for removal of a couple plants, pruning of several bushes and three trees as well as to have everything hauled away and dumped.

Pedro went over ideas with us for the front yard. We wanted low maintenance, low water usage. We agreed on a concept and it was completed in two days. Wonderful transformation!! I then asked him to build a brick wall. Beautifully done!! He volunteered to look at the back yard and our hill erosion. He had some great ideas and gave us a pretty competitive bid for the work. He is presently transforming our back yard as well. Our neighbors all comment on how wonderful our front yard looks and want Pedro to give them bids as well. This guy is a treasure! Great work, no messing around, things get done quickly and completely. He is competitive with costs and has great ideas that both work with the area in question and work with your budget. Good job Angie's List!

We bought the Big Deal so we could get started on some landscaping needs. Pedro listened to what we wanted to do with the two areas. He made suggestions after understanding my preferences which enhanced the overall delivery. He brought extra plants in addition to what we had decided to use. Several of his selections I liked; some I didn’t. There was no pressure or hard sell. He brought the additional plants to ensure I would be satisfied on the first visit. We ended up spending more than the original Big Deal, but we had expected to do that. He gave us a fair price for all the work, but we didn’t work with a formal invoice. He worked alongside his crew. The areas look very nice now and will look even better when the plants fill in. We are pleased and would definitely use his team again.
Description of Work: We needed to landscape a 500 sq ft renovated bed beside our driveway and a 75 sq ft space in front of our home. Pedro came for a consultation. We discussed water-wise plants, soil conditions, sun exposure and size at maturity. He is very knowledgeable, provided a general plan for what the Big Deal would provide and made some additional, no pressure suggestions for the areas. We agreed on the number and types of plants. On planting day, he brought all those plants as well as some additional specimen plants for me to see in case I might want to add them. I liked several of the additional types so he came the next day and planted the extra ones he had bought. In no way did this feel like an “upsell”; it was more like a friendly suggestion anticipating my preferences. His crew amended the soil as they planted. Mulch was spread over all the areas. He gave me specific instructions on watering so the plants would have a good start.

When he bid it he let me know I would need more for this or that. He wrote it out on the back of something else. I don’t remember the exact number, but it was around $800.00 as a combined total between the final bill and the Big Deal. When he arrived to do the job, he let me put the plants wherever I wanted. He had brought a few extras and let me know I could use them if I had wanted. I had to go somewhere and so I had asked him how much I was going to owe him since I had purchase the Big Deal. He didn’t have anything written down. He did a rough estimate and said it would be about $400.00. He said he would leave me change or an invoice if it was more than that. When I got back there was a bill for an additional $405.00. The $805 was well in excess of what he had originally said. He was a very nice man and he did a very nice job. My recommendation would just be to get it all in writing so you don’t end up with an $805.00 bill for what I thought would be $400- $500 worth of plants. He did go get a small trailer of fertilizer. He didn’t just fertilize the plants he was planting, but he did the plants that I already had. I noticed he had me pay for the fertilizer he used on the extra plants. When I questioned the additional $405 he started to get a little defensive, but I didn’t argue. I did pay him. He did a very nice job. He did go the extra mile in other areas; just the financials were off from what I thought it would be.
Description of Work: The work they did was fine. It was a rough process. I had them come out because I bought the big deal.

In the Big Deal add they list specific plants and trees that you had to choose from. I made my purchase based on their add. When I contacted them about the service, they told me that the plants I had chosen were not appropriate for my area. They gave me a different list of plants, which I was not pleased with. I feel this was a bait and switch and will not do business with a company that will do this. I requested a refund of my Big Deal purchase and do not recommend that anyone work with this company.

I explained to the customer that we made a mistake. Angie's List suggested an ad that we can run and we ran the ad before screening the plants that were offered in the ad. We corrected our mistakes as soon as we reliazed what had happened. However by then several customers had purchased the Big Deal. We responded to the customer's e-mail and apologize to her for our mistake. We offered to install plants that were more appropriate to the region. When she declined the offer and asked for a refund, we contacted Angie's List and acquired the information needed for her to recieve a refund. This information we e-mailed to her. Our offering of plants was made in good faith. There was never an intention to defraud anyone. We resent the accusation that we willfully tried to defraud her. We pride ourselves in giving the customer excellent value.

It was just a very professional relationship. I was working with them remotely because I am in Pennsylvania and they are in San diego. I was able to communicate with them what I was looking for and set up an agreement. They sent me photographs of the work they had done which was more than acceptable. It has just been a great relationship long distance which is kind of difficult to pull off.
Description of Work: I have a contract with them for annual maintenance on a lot I have in Escondido, CA.
I am over 70 years of age and a sole caregiver for my husband. I was overwhelmed with the work that needed to be done in my yard. Mr. Yanez was very supportive. I am grateful for his work as well as his helpful instructions. I am also grateful to Angie's List for finding this wonderful help!I won't hesitate to seek his advice and help in the future.
Description of Work: I bought the Big Deal coupon for 6 hours of master gardening help. His helpers weeded my yard, and spread mulch I had purchased while Mr. Yanez fixed sprinkler problems He gave me further instructions about sprinkler improvements needed. He fertilized my plants and trees with instructions on fertilizers and uses. He told me how to water the yard areas for optimum plant need/water usage. He also gave me information on using my composting materials. I was reluctant to ask them to weed a steep hillside, but it was done very well and without complaint. He was very helpful as he explained what he was doing and why, and what I needed to do to maintain the yard.. He was prompt, efficient, very courteous and knowledgeable. I definitely will use his service and expertise again.
