We called Mr. Handyman when we finally couldn't lock our front door without both of us lifting it up first. Debbie was our sales manager and was always pleasant, and she understood the problem. And -- get this -- we were called back, emailed back, everything. Not the normal flaky handyman/contractor thing. Debbie dispatched a handyman within a few days named Frank, who was not only courteous and knowledgable, but knew the area, knew how these houses were built, and has done this door-repair work a million times. He repaired the front door, back door, and outside gate within the quote, and it WAS NOT OVER-PRICED AT ALL. We will call this firm again in six months when the doors shift again. Also -- from the time we first contacted Mr. Handyman to the time the work was finished, it was five days. Debbie wanted it to be three. This firm is the opposite of flaky.
Description of Work: Repair of front door, back door and front gate -- due to weather changes and earth movement, all doors had fallen out of alignment, rendering them unable to latch or lock properly. A common problem with old houses in Southern California.

They did an excellent job with the bookcases. We had gotten completing bids on those, and found that their price was very reasonable. It depends on who specifically they send, but we have had a majority of positive experiences in using Mr. Handymen. My advise is to ask for the specialist in the area you are needing.
Description of Work: They custom built and designed bookcases in my daughter's room. We have used them several times for various projects over the years.

I met the service rep early that morning and did not receive a call until the following day. The message said that they were still working on the bid for the window and would get back to me by the end of the week and no later than the following week. My kitchen countertop install needed to be finished so I had to call another glass company to come out and take care of the broken window for me. They did everything in a very timely manner. I called Mr. Handyman and told them that I no longer needed their services for the window but that I was still interested in getting the bid for the tile installation. The woman who answered the phone took my email address and told me they were still working on it and would email it to me when it was finished. To this day, 09/15/10, I still have not heard ANYTHING from Mr. Handyman. I hired another company to take care of my tile installation. However, I will say that the service rep who came to my home was professional and very pleasant. The approximate price point for the time that might have been spent replacing my window was very high in comparison to what I was charged by the other company. I will not be calling this company again.
Description of Work: A window was broken when my kitchen countertop was being installed. I called Mr. Handyman to come out and give me an estimate to fix it. The service rep came, assessed the situation and told me that it was beyond his scope of expertise but he would pass on the information to the right person and get back to me. He also mentioned that he was good at tile installation so he took measurements on my kitchen floor and walls to provide me with a bid.

As the client accurately states, we were a week late providing this estimate. We got it to the client yesterday, the day before this review appeared. The technician who was responsible for her estimate had a serious illness, which is why there was a week delay. We owed the client and apology and a discount, which we offered, but she had already hired another company. We strive to offer the best home repair service in Los Angeles, if not California, and we were very sorry for the delay. Of course, if this was an actual job rather than an estimate, we would have assigned a healthy technician to complete the work on time and on budget.

They showed up on time, with help in a marked van and in uniform. As our house was freshly painted and floored, they paid extra careful attention to that by putting cardboard down in areas they were working. They worked around my home theater installers who were also working at the same time and were courteous to them (Big Ben Mounts, also recommended). When there were issues, they pointed them out, told me an adjusted estimate and did the work. These guys prove "you get what you pay for" and while expensive, the work was top notch. I would not however recommend the franchise serving Burbank. Keep in mind all Mr. Handyman franchise locations are not equal.
Description of Work: They installed all our appliances back after a flooring installation, put toilets back and installed a sink. I also had them back to do some lighting and light electrical work.

I would love to give these folks a full A rating. They did a great job, they were responsive, on time, the technician was professional and conscientious. He showed up in a neat company van and in uniform. They followed up on my initial inquiry, made a timely appointment, showed up when promised, the technician was prepared, he assessed the work, asked the right questions, got the right materials, did the jobs. They followed up with a call and a response form. What more could you ask? they are simply out of my league. Their hourly rate is simply much much more than I can afford to pay for handyman work. If I had the resources, this outfit would be my first choice. I highly recommend them to anyone who can pay over $100/hr for such labor.
Description of Work: I needed to replace a porch support post that had been eaten by termites, and repair/ paint a copula on top of the roof that had fallen to ill repair.

We would like to thank this member profusely for his kind and complimentary comments. We always strive to do our best, as indicated by his satisfaction. To address the issue of price, we fully admit that we are not as cheap as a typical unlicensed handyman, and sometimes we feel compelled to explain why our cost is higher. 1) We are fully insured, which protects our clients in case of damage. 2) We carry worker's compensation (not even a requirement for licensed contractors) so if our technicians are ever injured in a client's home, that client doesn't have to worry about being liable, or even using their homeowner's insurance. We cover everything. Use Google to search for stories about homeowners being sued by service providers who did not have worker's comp insurance. It's frightening. 3) We are licensed. If you ever have a disagreement with us, you can take it up with the state contractor's board. This is untrue of unlicensed handymen. 4) ALL of our technicians have over 15 years of experience in the trades, are all background-checked, and drug-free. Some very well-known crimes have been committed by handymen who people let into their homes without knowing their criminal background. 5) We offer a 100% guarantee! That security is priceless. 6) Our techs arrive on time, in uniform. They are supported by a full-time office staff, which means our clients always have someone to call with questions or complaints. To operate as the best, we need to charge more. But our (over) 3000 clients in the LA area believe we are worth it. We do too!

handyman service, tv antenna

To continue: I didn't know what kind of antenna would cost that much, and I thought perhaps the high quote was to protect themselves as they also would not know what kind of situation they were coming to until they got there. They take your charge card number to "guarantee" the appointment. Their handyman arrived on time. In a few minutes he cut the antenna pole in the back yard and put it in his truck to haul. Then he installed a small antenna and then came in and adjusted the TV for best reception. He removed his shoes on coming in. Said it was standard practice. Very polite. Very happy...whistling while working. He was there perhaps 1 1/2 hours or less. Now TV reception is very much better than before. Wondered if he would charge the whole $400.00 and he did. I tried to learn the value/make/model of the new antenna and best guess is GE for around $35 - 70. Service was fine. No complaints. I have not reported before because I did not realize they would really charge $400.00. I was floored when they did. I think if you normally make $200.00 an hour in your work you can hire these people. THEY ARE NOT FOR US FOLKS WHO MAKE ABOUT $10.00 per hour!!!!!!!!! So NO I would not hire them again. They are too expensive FOR ME. Also...LATER you find out that they contribute to some organizations (in their name of course. I would rather they NOT do that. If I want to contribute to something I will... but THEY get the tax write-off not you.
Description of Work: Called to request help getting a fallen TV antenna out of my back yard as it fell during a storm and blocked my way. Too heavy for me to move and was wedged so I could not move it. I also wondered if it could be moved to help with lousy reception to front of house where TV is. They suggested they could move the pole and antenna, but to buy a new, smaller antenna for better reception. and that perhaps I wouldn't be happy with a "laundry-line" at the front of the house. Right...ok. Estimate was $400.00.

We are disappointed that this customer rated us a C overall when we did the work to her satisfaction, cleanly, and within our estimate. We only charge for the actual time and materials that it takes to the job, and the charges are clearly spelled out on the invoice (including this customer's invoice, a copy of which we have in our office). As her review indicates, we did an excellent job, we were clean, friendly and efficient. She even writes that she had no complaints. That is exactly the type of service we strive for. However, we DO NOT charge anywhere near $200 per hour. We do charge more than your typical chuck-on-a-truck handyman, but we also offer much much more, such as insurance, the protection of state licensing, background-checked technicians, no subcontractors, and a 100% guarantee! Please call and you will see for yourself.

The handyman was punctual and courteous. The price, however, is too high. They have a 3 hr minimum which costs over $350!! There were problems, apparently not caused by them, which they came and fixed without extra charges. I probably won't use them again, however, as I have and will continue to have a lot of little jobs, and they just cost way too much.
Response from Mr. Handyman Serving Beverly Hills & Hollywood
First, one correction -- we DO NOT have a 3 hour minimum. That is incorrect. We are sorry that this client was displeased with our price, even though we completed the job to her satisfaction and even, as she notes, came back to repair something that wasn't our fault at no charge at all. We do our best to charge a fair price and offer an amazing service, as our high Angie's List rating and happy clients attest. Price and value are very personal, and we understand that some people do not feel see that value. Allthough we cost more than a Chuck-in-a-truck, our 100% guarantee, our insurance, our license, and our background-checked technicians with a minimum of 15 years of experience make it well worth it to our over 7000 customers in the LA area. Like the client below, who writes "the price was unbelievable. They way undercharged us." While we can't promise that everyone will see the value the same way, we do promise, as this customer states, that we guarantee all our work, even when it isn't our fault.

Overall a very negative experience. The guy also admitted to me that he wasn't trained, and had just picked these skills up from watching others.
Description of Work: I called a week in advance to schedule an appointment to have some damaged moulding fixed or replaced in my apartment. (The moulding had been chewed in a few places by my pet rabbit.) I had taken a day off of work to deal with this. The day before the appointment, the handyman called and left a message saying he wouldn't be able to show up, and that I would need to call back and reschedule. I did, but I wasn't able to take off another work day, so I scheduled it for the weekend. However they have a much higher rate for weekend work. I called in to ask for a reduction in price since I had originally scheduled for earlier. They gave me the regular rate. That would've made me happy, except that it turns out that all the "professional" handyman could do was sand it a little, and paint over it. And he didn't sand it with any sort of special power tool. He sanded it with a 50 cent sanding wedge anyone could buy at Home Depot, and sealed it with "patch-n-paint." The damage was not as noticable, but it wasn't fixed. I ended up paying $500 for this "service," and still had to pay for it upon moving out of the apartment (it's not even about the money -- I was hoping to avoid a bad mark on my rental history by making it look nice, but this "handyman" told me this was the best he could do.)

This is a very distressing report for a number of reasons, not the least of which are the factual inaccuracies throughout, but most of all because we tried to contact this client numerous times, both by phone and email, immediately after the appointment to follow up on our work, as we do with every customer, and he never responded. We GUARANTEE our work 100%, but we cannot help a client if they do not wish to be helped. In this case, we do not believe that this client wanted us to return to guarantee our work for this reason: He explicitly asked us to do a cheaper version of the repair than we recommended. As he states, his pet had chewed through his baseboard. The damage was very bad. We recommended repairing in some places and replacing in others. As he was renting, he told us that replacing baseboard would be too expensive, and asked us to do a cheaper version of the job. This is most likely why his landlord did not accept the repair. Our technician on this job has 30 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE doing this work, and in fact use to own his own painting/carpentry company. It is absolutely incorrect that he ever told the customer he is not trained in this work. We are baffled as to why the client would make this completely erroneous claim. We fully admit that we had a scheduling problem that caused us to ask this customer to change appointments, and we sincerely apologize for that. In fact, what this client does not mention is that we gave him 10% our regular price because of this. And his bill was not $500, but closer to $350. As you can see by our ratings, we do high quality work at a reasonable price. We have contacted this client asking if there's anything we can do for him, but he continues to ignore our calls. This is our standard policy with every customer. We do not want to leave anyone unhappy. And we make this promise to you as well.

Every time I use them, it's a wonderful experience. They're not cheap, but they're worth the price. They show up when they're supposed to, and they make sure the job gets done right. I have NEVER been disappointed in the five years that I've been working with them. The office staff is great too -- helpful, friendly and accommodating.
Description of Work: I've used these guys for years. I won't give you the name of my favorite technician, because he's too busy as it is, but everyone they've ever sent me has been top notch. Since I moved into my home, Mr Handyman has helped me hang pictures, put up chandeliers and sconces, installed a new sink, replaced door hardware, hooked up my computer, and virtually every other thing you can think of.
His work has been excellent so far! Manfred has been on time every time and has been a wonderful person to work with. You don't even know he's there.
Description of Work: He's sanded two decks, fixed chipped tile in the kitchen, regrouted a sink, replaced a glass window in a door, fixed hinges in the bathroom and kitchen, resanded and finished our basement door, corrected a lightbulb issue, has hung two mirrors and a picture, fixed a doggie door, and rerouted the wires for our television sets.

I asked Mr. Handyman to come out and see if they could do a better job, and they did. My technician was on-time, professional, tidy, courteous, and explained what he thought should be done and how long it would take. It looks so much better than what my original contactor had done and I have a lot more room under the sink to store items. I think it was a good value for the money since these technicians that come in to your home are licensed, bonded, and have background checks. I felt comfortable with the technician in my house, and the quality of work was excellent. I would recommend them, and I will have them back for other work when I need it.
Description of Work: I had a kitchen remodel, but I didn't like the way my original contractor had installed the trash compactor to the double sink. It was connected to the vegetable sink on the side, but I preferred to have it connected to the main sink. I also needed a better job of drywall/plaster around the sink pipes that went in to the wall. My original contractor had left large openings that were a concern for drafts, ants, etc.

It was my first full renovation so I can not compare to others as my prior projects were comparatively simple. Liza's follow-up 24/7 on emails and calls is remarkable. They did what they could to keep the place tidy however given the magnitude of the job, and tight quarters, that was not always possible.
Description of Work: Wow, did they transform a real dump in to a palace. Liza is terrific in responsiveness and in getting the matter attended to asap. Our project was a total transformation, top to bottom. Her crews were really great. Good attitude. Listen well, and want to do the right thing. New Heating/AC, rewiring, plumbing, replastering, repainting inside and out, these were the main tasks. There were a few hickups in workmanship and that may be due to the frequency of the general contractors visits to monitor their subs work. That is not to say they did not do awesome work in most areas. Their plastering people are super heros. Liza has a great eye for colors when time to paint. The structural issues with the roof and leaking that accompanied that, were addressed and withstood an on slaught of rain that followed. Truely amazing effort and results. There were solutions to unsual and unexpected problems that they were able to arrange to keep the whole renovation on budget. Their painting guys did a great job too. It was not a simple job and I give them lots of credit for hanging in there in this previously seriously neglected duplex. The fence work was very nice finishing touch too. While the project is not "done" to my standards yet, they completed the tasks as outlined in the original contract. Just ran out of money for the moment... I highly recommend Liza to others.
The employee of Mr. Handyman arrived about 5 minutes early dressed in a sharp uniform. He walked around the house with me as I showed him the 3 doors that were sticking and explained to him what needed to be done for recreating and installing a windowsill that had fallen off our house due to a heavy rainstorm. He explained to me how the pricing would work for his services from the actual time spent at the house to the time he needed to go pick up supplies at the hardware store to install a new windowsill. He planed a couple of doors and figured out that one of the doors needed to be re-hung. He worked very efficiently, and explained to me what he was doing all along the way. I liked that he seemed to know how to do everything that we would ever need done in the house being a professional general contractor. The windowsill installation required some sanding of the plaster inside the windowfram after he had finished and he did the job very professionally, and then left the room spotless after he had re-painted and matched the paint color perfectly around the window to the rest of the wall. I could not be happier. The price seemed a little higher per hour than what I typically pay for repair work, but given how quickly he got these 4 jobs done (in about 3 hours including his trip to the hardware store), I was very happy with the overall value for the work.
Description of Work: We had three doors planed or re-hung that were sticking, and I also had an exterior window sill installed that required exterior and interior painting on a 2nd floor window.

We thank this client profusely for this all A's report. We are thrilled that we could provide perfect service. In addition, we want to assure our clients that all of our technicians are top-notch. All of them have been with us for a while, ranging from 18 months to over 5 years, with the current average being 3 years. We hire only the best technicians available -- they are truly craftsmen. And of course we offer a 100% GUARANTEE , so if you're ever unhappy with the work of one of our technicians, we will address the problem and give you another tech if you wish. This is not something you can get from a one-man-show handyman.
They are great and we love them. We probably spend between $5-10,000 annually with them. We are not homeowners. They are very expensive, but they are worth it. We really, really like the person that they send out. We trust him and he always does a really good job. They really back their work so it anything goes wrong, they are responsible for it. They do a very thorough and good job. They charge $110 per hour; it better be good for that price. Everyone has to make a living and we don't think they charge over what they have to.
Description of Work: We have used Mr Handyman to put furniture and media stuff together. They have fixed doorbells, holes, heating thermostats, done painting and that kind of stuff.

The repairs included some welding and electrical work. I can't remember if they did any other work. I was happy with them. They were very responsive. I needed somebody right away. They were very polite and very professional. They came over right away. I didn't have any problems with them. They were a little pricey but other than that they were good.
Description of Work: Mr. Handyman came out last September and did a lot of maintenance repairs after my tenant vacated.
