I created a Houzz Board for Nathan of my landscape interests, had a phone conversation on what I was looking for with my landscape project, and set up time for him to come to my house. He told me he was booked until September and possibly October. I told him that we had time and I could wait. I had set up two separate times for him to visit my yard. He couldn't come the first time since there was a big job of pouring concrete. I can't remember why he didn't show up the second time. I never heard from him again.

Nathan was easy to work with! We wanted a water-wise garden that is pleasing to the eye, a variety of shapes and color to keep it interesting. He delivered his concepts and plans quickly keeping our desires in mind. We loved that he has so much knowledge about plants, more than that, we loved his enthusiasm about plants. He measured the entire steep granite surface and came back to us with a detailed plant. Nathan was here the day everything arrived and placed each plant keeping their growth pattern in mind. He told us exactly what he would do and what others would be responsible for. He worked quickly and carefully to finish the job and has been available since the project was completed to answer questions. We highly recommend Nathan and his referrals. It has been our experience that landscapers know a lot about hardscape (bricks, mortar, etc.) but little about plant materials. We wanted someone who could give us an interesting garden, keeping water use in mind. Nathan has lots of recommendations for others who could complete the hardscaping portion of the plan and their work was equally as good. Without a doubt we will trust Nathan and his recommendations on future projects. Nathan had great follow-up and listening skills, worked well with everyone, was prompt and consistent and always available to address questions or concerns. We love our new garden!
Description of Work: Created an overall landscaping plan and design for the front yard. Purchased and placed all the planting material. Worked in combination with others to to complete the actual project. Added ideas and plant materials to the backyard.

Well...we are in the thick of it but so far it is going well! Nathan provided us with two possible plans for our front and back yard. What I truly appreciate about Nathan is that he was very sensitive to our budget and at the same time very good at providing us with his expertise: PLANTS! He listened to what we wanted both in terms of using the space in our backyard and also in terms our our overall aesthetic. He has regularly called and checked in with me about small details, because he knows that small details matter. I feel that I am in very good hands, which matters a lot to me since I am pretty much a neophyte as far as SoCal backyards go. He had contractors come over to bid for the project and he will be ordering the plants, which is lovely since all plants are definately not created equal. I will post more as the project progresses, but I wanted to post now because I am very, very glad that I found Nathan on Angie's List.

Overall it was great!
Description of Work: We found Nathan through a recommendation. He is extremely easy to work with. He is very nice, easy-going, listens really well to what the client wants and has excellent suggestions. We needed a landscape design for our front, side and part of our back yard. We are not gardeners and so needed something easy that we couldn't kill, would require very little water and would be beautiful too. We also don't have much time, so we needed a yard that didn't require much time or work, yet did I mention, we wanted it to be beautiful??? Nathan had an initial meeting with us to find out our requirements and ideas. He measured our yard, and then came up with a landscape plan within a fairly short time. We met again, went over the plan and picked out plants. Nathan has extensive knowledge about what plants will work and what won't, and offered many options to choose from. We finalized the landscape plan, and then had Elite Landscaping install. Nathan has a strong relationship with Elite Landscaping and we trusted his recommendation that we use them. We were not disappointed! Nathan supervised and guided the installation, plant placement, etc. We had a final walk through with him and Jay (the owner of Elite) where any issues were brought up (there really weren't any). Nathan then told us how to care for our new plants, how to water them, how to maintain them, etc. so we are knowledgeable and able to keep our new yard alive. Nathan also did a bunch of pots/planters for us. He did one for our front walkway and three for our deck. They are absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I was skeptical about doing pots, but they really are the finshing touch and make those areas look so much better. The pots have multiple plants in them or varying texture, height, and color so they are incredibly interesting and special. Nathan has followed up with us a couple of times since the installation to adjust the watering schedule as the plants mature, and to make sure everything is still alive and doing well. We now have a beautiful, flowering, low water use, low maintenance yard. We got everything we asked for from Nathan and we are very, very happy!

The total project cost us about $12,000, of which Nathan's design work was about $900. The rest was for plants and materials and labor. We feel fortunate to have been a client of Nathan?s in his first year of business here. He?s very knowledgeable and easy to work with. He takes time to be sure he understands what we want, tactfully make suggestions, and value our satisfaction as a primary goal.
Description of Work: We told Nathan that we wanted to accomplish three things: 1 – Make our back yard more inviting, 2 – Change it to require less water, 3 – Keep some lawn, which our dog dearly loves. Nathan provided us with a detailed computer-generated design and we went through two or three iterations on it. Nathan selected and purchased most of the new plants, oversaw the removal and preparation work and made several minor tweaks after the job had been completed. The licensed and bonded sub-contractors he used were friendly, considerate, and very experienced. The physical work included removal of old plants, soil preparation, laying of a concrete mow curb, installation of drip irrigation, installation of sod, installation of mulch, and laying of stepping stones. This was all accomplished in about two weeks

We were very fortunate to link with Nathan, who had just moved to the Encinitas area after years as Museum Scientist/Arboretum Manager at the UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley. Our emphasis was the plants ? and Nathan really knows his plants from being curator of the Botanical Garden?s 14 acre collection of California native plants. Nathan first worked with us to turn our vision into drawings, including how things would look in a year. He selected a wide range of plants, with a focus on reduced water requirements while maintaining a tropical feel. Nathan brought contractors to us (we contracted directly with them) with whose work he was familiar and comfortable. These included a excellent general landscaping contractor who did the bulk of the work and did it very well, a concrete stainer who did a good job, plus a tree trimmer who did a very thoughtful pruning of a long neglected olive tree. Nathan understood our vision and went ?out of the box? when needed to achieve this vision. We originally talked to a landscape architect, but his interpretation of our vision and his approach was too conventional for us, as we wanted something special. Nathan was easy going throughout the process, and we had an excellent working relationship. We were particularly impressed that he listened carefully ? both to us, but also to the ideas and observations of the contractors regarding various issues, especially with an eye toward long term operation and maintenance. We highly recommend Nathan Smith for both his design, plant knowledge, and implementation supervision skills.
Description of Work: Nathan turned our vision into a reality! We wanted to transform our rundown backyard into a tropical setting, complete with Balinese gazebo, while being reasonable regarding water requirements. Nathan worked with us on the design, including specifying a wide range of plants (over 25 varieties). He then brought to us reliable contractors, with whose work he was familiar, to implement $30,000 of work, with Nathan supervising the process. The work included scraping to bare earth, installing drainage and irrigation, installing many varieties of plants of all sizes, landscape lighting, sod, concrete staining, fence painting and repair, installing the Balinese gazebo, tree trimming, etc. Nathan also designed a shade structure which used shade cloth, and whose wooden support framework was elegant in its clean lines. Nathan also took us to plant pot vendors to select pots for the patio, and we got some really, really nice ones. Nathan supervised the process, and worked with us and the contractors to find solutions as issues popped up. He also did some of the actual planting of additional smaller plants and plants in large pots since he enjoys keeping his hands in the soil. We enjoy our yard every day and evening – and it isn’t even yet fully grown! We have received a number of “wow….” comments.
