+ 2 moreVery well. The crew was courteous and professional in handling details of the job plus did a good clean up afterwards. The day was overcast with light drizzle of rain which helped make the ground soft for removal of the many dead shrubs. They worked 7 1/2 hours. I was very pleased with the results and their handling of the work. Each one was very knowledgeable of what he had to do.
Description of Work: After getting an estimate from Kent, the owner and supervisor, 3 men arrived at 9AM and worked for the day here. I had about 5 big, dead shrubs due to less watering restrictions from the city. They had to be removed and all the hedges had to be cut down due to overgrowth resulting from weekly gardeners not spending enough time here. They also trimmed and pruned back the few trees I have. I will be having them back in Spring to re do the backyard irrigation to drip vs. spray, put in small plants, special type of wood chips and more trimming.

+ -1 moreI called Kent to arrange a time for him to come out and help give me an estimate on what to expect for the outside of our new house. I spoke with him twice on the phone, once to work out that sunday would be the best day and then he said he would call back on friday to confirm a time. I did not hear from him so I called him on saturday and he set up the time for 3-330pm Sunday. I gave him the address a second time and on sunday, he was a no show between 3-330 and we were even there before 3 and stayed after 4. We received no call from him and I still have not heard from him to this day.
Description of Work: Did not show up to appointment after confirming the day twice and the time the day before.

He did the job within budget even though it ended up being a lot more work than they originally anticipated. The following Monday, he had an entire crew at our house, and they did a tremendous amount of quality work in a day's time. Everyone from C H Landscaping was professional and courteous, and they did great work. We will definitely use their services again. Also, Kent is extremely knowledgeable in his field; we plan to work with him when we re-landscape our backyard.
Description of Work: Cut down a big carrotwood tree in our front yard and ground the stump, trimmed another large carrotwood in our backyard, and trimmed back several trees on a steep bank in our backyard.

+ 1 moreKent came out and talked us through his recommendations, we got an immediate feel for his expertise and passion for landscaping. Out of all the people we talked to about our plans for the yard, he was the only one that seemed to understand exactly what I was looking for. He had his team out a week later - they were fast and efficient. The finished product was better than we had hoped. And they expertly trimmed a large old Avocado tree and several bushes within just a couple hours -- didn't leave a trace of down branches when they left. Great Job.
Description of Work: Demo'd the front yard (removed grass). Designed and landscaped the yard with drought resistant pants. Converted the irrigation system to a drip system. Trimmed trees in the back yard.

+ 0 moreIt was rather easy to set-up a time for a contractor from C&H Gardens to come to our home to give us a quote on a retaining wall. He arrived on-time and was professional in his appearance and demeanor. However, he did not bring a packet of material samples nor hardcopies of examples of his company's work. I felt that he listened well to my concerns and budget limitations. He then gave me a suggestion of what type of wall and material he would use and drew a rather rudimentrary sketch of what the wall would look like. He then offered me a quote for the material and labor on the spot. This was by far the cheapest quote we recieved however, I did not feel that the quality of the product he offered was what I wanted. I also did not feel like he went in-depth enough into the necessary steps and additional materials (beyond the bricks) that were needed in building a retaining wall. For this reason and the lower quality of materials offered (possibly due to our budgetary limitations) we decided not to use C&H Gardens.

We are very pleased with Kent's services and would be happy to recommend him to anyone. 6/2/14 The work started on Monday morning 6/2/14 and ended just as Kent stated on the afternoon of Friday 6/6/14. Kent had a large crew of 4 - 5 workers at our house everyday. They worked very hard. If my husband or I had a suggestion they followed up on it. They did not mind adding a few extra things such as a few extra plants where we had not asked for them in the original bid. Carlos, the on site manager, was very helpful and available to answer any questions. The first two days they cleared the land and prepared the soil. They carefully went through the soil with their hands to make sure they removed all of the debris. Next they brought in the plants and planted them. This was followed by the irrigation. Lastly they hand carried the wood chips, in buckets, from the front of our house to the back and then up the slope. This was an amazing job. They moved a large truck load of wood chips to the back and spread it out in a matter of hours. The last day they planted a few extra plants in pots for me and then power washed and sealed the bricks. The hand rail comes in later this week as it is made by an outside contractor. We had several people give us a bid on the railing and this was the best bid by far. One bid was for $2500.00 for a metal rail, another wanted $2000.00 for treated redwood. We feel like the hand rail should turn out well also as it is being treated to not rust.
Description of Work: 11/12/14 This is an update to our previous review on 6/2/14. Some of the plants that were planted had died during the long hot summer that we had despite our frequent watering and care. We contacted Kent and within 2 days he came out to look over the situation and within a week he had his crew out to replace the dead plants with more drought tolerant plants and ispect and adjust the drip system. 6/2/14 Kent Horner, the owner of C& H Gardens came out to our home after we called him to ask for a bid on landscaping our upper and lower sloping backyard. He listened carefully as we explained our desire for planting of drought resistant plants and removal of all existing ground cover and many bushes that were not doing well. We also wanted the remaining plants and all exiting vegetation to be placed on drip irrigation. We have a large 40 year old pine on the top of the hill. Kent suggested shaking it out and irrigating it also. We have pavers on the front driveway, front walkway and porch, back patio areas and walkways around the back of the house. We wanted them to be power washed and sealed. We also wanted a railing to placed along the concrete steps that run up to the top of our bank/hillside. Kent told us about plants he would use, showed us pictures of them on his phone. We then sat down with him and he told us he could start as soon as the next week since the job would only take one week. The cost was broken down as follows. Demo upper and lower banks, redo irrigation to drip on both levels, install new plants on both levels of back yard in groups of 4-5. Install 3-4 inches of wood chips on both levels of backyard.The price of this was $8500. (After we settled on this price, I decided to have the workers take out 6 rose bushes in a front flower bed and then replace them with other plants. I expected to pay more for this work, but Kent did not charge extra for it.) Power wash and seal bricks $2000.00 Install hand rail $1850.00

+ 4 moreKent, the owner was selected for service based on his gentle and comforting demeanor. I am widow with a small child. I needed to feel safe with men coming in and out of my space. Kent made me feel safe & I knew I could trust him immediately. I was not the easiest client with my very specific demands for design & Kent provided feedback & changes. Between the two of us, the space is magazine worthy. The workers were respectful, knowledgeable in their field, and worked quickly with precision. The work was predicted for 7-10 weeks. All this work was completed in 3 weeks. I highly recommend Kent Horner and C&H! Kent not only made me feel safe under my circumstances, he became a friend!

After listening to my needs, Kent provided a very strong and beautiful landscape plan to enhance both our front and back yards. He had great recommendations of what to do, what to plant and what to remove... I had one idea and Kent greatly enhanced my original plans. He has a great crew lead by Mario and they removed concrete, put in a new drip system, expanded our stone patio, tiled our exterior fireplace and installed some beautiful plantings in both the front and back of our house. The crew was clean, efficient and skilled in their craft. The project was completed in one week and I am very happy with the outcome. Along with a successful project, I was particularly impressed with Kent's willingness to come back after one week and fix some easy issues I was having with the sprinkler heads...it demonstrated his professionalism and commitment to customer satisfaction. In a few words, I would describe working with Kent and his crew in the following... professional, quality, courteous, innovative design, and commitment to getting the job aligned to the customer's satisfaction. + 1 moreC&H whacked tree limbs from a tree on our property over hanging the property line on their client's side. As Kent explained, this is legal, and I agree. It is also an ugly, lacking in aesthetic sense, result, where about 50% of the tree was removed, as the tree cutting simply went straight up the property line, no attempt to thin, balance, or lace the tree. The tree is now at risk for balance, health, and appealing growth pattern. A C&H employee did cross onto our property without out permission to cut even more, and I had to ask the employee to leave twice. This behavior is illegal, although the employee was very polite, as were all of C&H's ground crew. So if you simply want a largely legal result, without considering the impact on other property, this is your contractor.
Description of Work: Whacked overhanging tree limbs from a tree on our property for their client., our next door neighbor The client contracted for the service, and a portion of the work performed negatively impacted us.

He came out right away, made some great suggestions and enhancements on what we wanted to do (and I was quite picky on certain plants that I didn't want), and he had his guys there working 2 days later. When he came out to give us the bid, he said something that I still use often - when you hirer anyone you always are looking at price, quality, and timeliness. You want cheap, high quality and done fast , but you can only have 2 out of three. It if is cheap and high quality, it won't be done fast. If you want high quality and done fast, it won't be cheap. And if you want cheap and done fast, it won't be high quality. So, while yes, I did think they were a little pricey, the quality was amazing and they got the work done quickly! The work was done over the summer and things have filled in nicely and our yard looks great. I would definitely call them and use them again!

+ 3 moreHere's the headline; STUNNING, EXTRAORDINARY WORK!!! We contacted C & H after doing some general research online. We liked owner Kent Horner's website because it appeared that he was creative and although the picture gallery was limited, the work looked fabulous! We contacted Kent and he came to the house within 24 hours for a consultation. Our original plan was to do the pool planter and improve the Cypress trees, but after hearing his ideas we decided to move forward with other areas in the yard that concerned us. Kent was extraordinary! He patiently worked with my wife and me, considering and incorporating our thoughts and desires as he crafted his own concept. Sometimes it's hard to let someone you don't know personally, redesign important living spaces at your home. It was a bit scary to let go and trust. But WOW, were we rewarded! Kent went above and beyond, overseeing every detail of design, demolition, restoration and completion. The best and most impressive part of his service was beyond the creative layout/design, it was the high quality of his plant specimens! We were blown away by the size and health of the plants we received! And while the price for the project was, for our finances, significant...the "bang for the buck" was entirely worth it! No tiny plants to wait 5 years to see develop. While at the same time, Kent was careful not to overstuff the beds and left plenty of room for growth. For us, the in-ground plantings were incredible. In addition, Kent and his crew planted and placed 27 pots of various sizes. All spectacular! A word about his crew too, 8-15 guys, clad in hi-visibility construction mesh vests...nice, thoughtful, prompt and careful. They treated our home like it was their own. The entire project took about 7 days, start to finish. NO WAY we'd go anywhere else for landscaping. Period.
Description of Work: Trimmed, pruned, and restored irrigation to 28 Italian Cypress trees. Pruned 2 large Magnolia trees. Redesigned, demo'd and replanted a 30'x3.5' poolside planter with two showpiece palms and many succulents. Completely redesigned, demo'd and planted backyard and strategically planted trees in front yard. Project included hundreds of plantings, bamboo, citrus, and palms. Many trees were planted with screening and privacy in mind. Reconfigured irrigation for water conservation and added wood chips to beds. Plus, consulted and designed pool area, front entry, and covered patio with pots/specimen plantings.

The cost was beyond what was in my budget for a backyard makeover. The printout design plan was easy to read but not what I wanted. Plant types I did not want were included anyway. Perhaps that was a miscommunication.

+ 0 moreI called C&H and had a response within in an hour. It was easy to an appointment to meet at our home and he was there on time. Ken had a lot of great ideas to make our landscaping more water wise and he was very patient with my husband and I while we toiled over ideas. The first meeting he spent over 2 hours with us talking about design and options. He also came back for a second time to discuss these things more due to my husband and my indecisiveness. As I said he was very patient with us. When we finally decided on a design, Ken and his crew were able to start right away. We were very impressed that the process went so smoothly and quick. The entire C&H crew was friendly and knowledgeable. There were a few things I wanted to make changes to in the middle of the project and Ken was nothing but accommodating. The water wise landscaping turned out beautiful (this is coming from someone who loves lush tropical plants), on time and on budget. We liked C&H so much we had them take down a very large eucalyptus tree, their pricing was very reasonable and for such a messy tree there was no evidence that the tree had ever been there. Great job all around and we would definitely use Ken and his crew again for another project.

+ 0 moreThis was a challenging project to undertake due to the soil consistency and slope of the area to be planted. The soil was a combination of rock and decomposed granite so C&H had to jack hammer growing sites for each tree which was more than a one day effort for the ten men who took on the job. When we had concerns or questions Kent the owner would show up that day and took care of any changes. We were very impressed with his hands on style and promptness to our calls. The whole hillside has been artistically transformed and we would not hesitate to recommend C & H Landscaping for small or large projects.
Description of Work: C&H planted 10 large timber bamboo and 15 California pepper trees on our property.

They showed up early and performed the entire job very efficiently. Every time I looked out the window they did not stop cutting,chopping,shredding and racking. I was impressed by their pace. + -1 moreWe bought this deal because we knew we wanted to invest in a landscape design before we actually started our big demo project of our backyard with a budget of 15K. First of, when we tried the schedule him to come over to get started he was late for our 1st meeting. We had scheduled him to come on a Saturday morning but when he didnt showup 45 minutes later I called him. Apparently he was still sleeping as I had woken him up, and he asked if he could come on a different day. We said no because he had already rescheduled our plans to accommodate him. When he finally came another 45 min later , we met briefly and kicked around some ideas. We followed up with an email to give him our input regarding what things we wanted or didn't want incorporated into the design. A week later, we drops off design plans but it did not incorporate the all the ideas we wanted, specifically dog & kid friendly plan selection, drainage layout. When we asked for a revision regarding these things, he said this was a 'conceptual' design, not intended to give specifics. He did end up revising the plans with drainage schematics but did not change plant selection. The process took a couple of weeks and several phone calls trying to make sure things were being followed up. Although we did end up using some of his ideas for general placement of patio and grass, the overall design was not used. All in all, I thought it was a compete waste of time and effort. I would have rather paid the full price for a landscape designer, rather than getting the 'deal' which was not up to par. I guess you get what you pay for.

He is a pleasure to deal with at a professional and personal level. We have other irons in the fire at the moment and we are postponing any action on landscaping at the moment.

+ 2 moreKent was very punctual and enthusiastic when he arrived for our first meeting. He exhibited great knowledge about landscaping design and the types of plants he felt would acquire that goal. He listened to my desires and concerns, and offered suggestions and solutions. Kent was very confident in the information he provided. He and his crew arrived on Monday morning and immediately began the arduous work of transforming my yard. It was a bit frustrating that Kent spent a great deal of time on his phone during the several times he checked in on the project, making conversation with him difficult. It was satisfying to have a very knowledgeable crew chief who kept me informed, answered questions, and was generally a great contact. It took one extra day to complete this project, but was worth the extra time commitment. Kent was very responsive to emails, and routinely responded within the same day. Sometime after the project was completed, I expressed concern about three issues. Kent personally, or had his crew, resolve those issues to my satisfaction. We had a mis-communication about one area of the backyard. It did not end up as I had envisioned, but it is lovely and I am satisfied. I am pleased with the results, and thoroughly enjoy looking at the new landscaping, and spending time in the beautiful new backyard.
Description of Work: Designed and planted new landscaping for several areas of the yard, installed a new sprinkler box and drip system, and built a gorgeous flagstone sidewalk in the backyard.

+ -1 moreWhile the provider was punctual for the initial meeting, he did not provide the plans in the timeframe stated. He indicated that I would have the plans the following week. I had to make a call and send an e-mail (which wasn't responded to) severtal weeks later to follow-up on the status. I also asked for a cost breakdown for the install. Eventually he showed up unannounced approximately 7-10 days after my call. I felt during our initial meeting that my ideas were being ignored and it was more about what he liked and his vision,not mine. When I reviewed the plans, it appeared my initial reaction was correct. Additionally, there was no cost breakdown, or any dollar figure, included with the plans. I also felt during our inital meeting that there was not a lot of interest in doing the project as my yard is on the smaller side. Again, my initial reaction was correct as C&H never followed up with me after dropping off the plans.
Description of Work: Drew plans for a backyard makeover.

+ 1 moreKent came out and did a fantastic job. He was very quick, he worked with our tiny budget, and best of all he made all the decisions regarding the plants and the layout. My wife and I are terrible at picking plants and we couldn't be happier with the job and selection of plants. Our house is no longer an eye soar!
Description of Work: Removed all ugly plants/weeds/irrigation from the front lawn (builders special) and replaced with drip lines and all new plants.
