Description of Work: I have used R&L Roofing several times over many years. The Latest project was repairing a a leaking tile roof on a rental property. Apparently it had been repaired by the previous owner(not successfully). R&L roofing was able to find matching old style tiles and did not crack any tiles during the repair. We also had gutters installed on both properties. Great job and fast service. |A much larger job they did was in 2013 on a 2400 square flat roof which is always subject to leakage at the gravel stops overlaps. This time they put on a bullet proof triple layer roof that included a reflective energy sheet and a new skylight. This installation was coordinated with the solar company. We had one small leak 2 years later which they promptly fixed. Great job nd fantastic service. |They may not be the least expensive company but they stand behind their work and as the old saying goes "you get what you pay for"! |I highly recommend them to everyone.

Response from Raneri & Long Roofing and Windows
This is unfortunate, and I apologize for any misunderstanding or miscommunication. The fact is, my company does NOT charge a $600. minimum for gutter cleaning. The minimum applies if a gutter INSTALLATION is concerned, simply because no matter what the size of a gutter, a truck, with the machinery, and a crew, usually three men, must be dispatched. This entails fuel, labor, workers comp and general liability costs. I'm not certain how to post the minimum charge on Angie's List, but I'll attempt to get it on there. Usually a cleaning for a normal sized home would entail a $175. service charge. Again, I'm sorry for any misunderstanding. Dave Hancock, President Raneri and Long

Thanks very much for this review. Obviously, we weren't able to fully please you and for that I'm sorry. As with the entire industry, this El Niňo thing, even thought it hasn't happened yet, has very much overwhelmed our company, causing the difficulty with scheduling, communication, etc. We ARE very grateful for your business, and are regretful that all was not absolutely perfect. Please, if in the future, for any reason, you need assistance, don't hesitate to call me directly. My cell is 619 244 1618. Thanks again, Dave

Description of Work: While the roof was being prepped, it started raining after the crew finished for the day. As my wife and I started climbing the roof to cover it with plastic sheeting, we looked up to see a R&L crew driving down the hill. A very welcome sight. Still finding the occasional water bottle cap or nail in the succulents around the house, to be expected I am told.

From the bid to the final measurements and installation, everything went very well. The windows are beautiful and the installation went without any glitches. Anything, no matter how minor, that I pointed out (which was seldom) were taken care of immediately. I highly recommend this company if you are contemplating vinyl retro-fit window replacements.
Description of Work: Raneri & Long were recommended to me by the stucco company I had chosen for the upgrade to my home. Dave Hancock came out the day I called for a bid. Dave was professional, interested and courteous and carried very nice Simonton windows. They were installed last week and are beautiful. If the price seems high, it's not. I had 13 windows and a slider installed, each including a perimeter grid and one very large sight-obscurring window over my entryway. The installers were great and meticulous.

This review is currently written approximately a year from my first encounter with Raneri and Long Roofing. I did not choose this company for services beyond the original estimate and followup consultations over email. My property had some leaks at the windows. I suspected it was a roofing problem so I called Raneri and Long to come take a look at it. Dave Hancock came over and inspected the flat roof and windows. He pointed out that my roof was done wrong and is currently in a really bad condition. There were multiple soft spots on top of the roof. The only reliable option to solve this problem would be a new roof. Dave proposed that we tear off the old roof and install a new modified bitumen roof. His price was reasonable and on par with other reputable roofing companies. I proceeded to get more estimates and educate myself more on flat roof types. I learned of other roof systems that might be better options so I consulted with Dave to see why he recommended the modified bitumen roof as opposed to other systems. Dave was articulate and professional in his communication. He clarified his proposal with sound logic. In the end, I decided to use another roof type that Dave's company did not offer. If I had picked a modified bitumen roof, I would have definitely gone with Raneri and Long based on their outstanding record and Dave's excellent customer service skills. Thanks Dave!

Raneri & Long not only looked for and found matching roof tiles and did the caulking, they also secured the tiles along the ridge. THIS COMPANY HAS AN EXCELLENT REPUTATION, ENCOURAGES SAFETY FOR ITS WORKERS, IS CLEAN AND TIDY, AND HAS A GREAT CREW OF WORKERS!!! I have some other properties and will not use anyone else.
Description of Work: Roof repair. About 15 years ago I had a light weight concrete tile roof installed on my home along with a skylight in 1 room. Unfortunately, 2 years ago the skylight blew off during heavy rains and wind. When that happened, the original contractor came out immediately and secured the skylight and said he would be back later to repair 3-4 tiles that broke when the skylight hit the roof. After 3 calls, he never came back and no longer is in business. This contractor noticed several other tiles there were apparently broken when the house was tented for termites (the termite company did not offer me broken tile protection). Raneri & Long also noticed that the tiles may not have been originally set properly as the lap over was broken/sawed off in a continuous line from the ridge point, as the caulking had dried up.

If you are like me, and usually tend to pick the WRONG contractor for a job, read this. I hired Raneri & Long Roofing after getting other bids. Raneri & Long were approx. $1000 less than one contractor I received an estimate from. A lot of my facia board was destroyed by termites and wood rot. I blame the wood rot on the original roof not being properly installed. Anyway, I was going to do the repair work at first- wanting to save money. Later on I decide to have Raneri & Long do the repairs. Dave, the president of the company came out to offer the bid. I felt that Dave was up front and honest with his work, so I decided to use Raneri & Long. The workers showed up in force! I had 10 workers on my roof working. It was amazing. Each worker knew what his job was and was doing it. By the end of the first day all repairs to the roof and eaves were made and half the tile was reinstalled on the roof. The workers were polite, respectful and GOOD! What was more amazing was that all these men loved their job. Nobody was working slow, nobody was complaining about the job. As a matter of fact, on two seperate instances, two different workers actually told me that they love what they do and love the company that they work for! These men worked hard all day long, but yet had fun all day. We could hear them on the roof laughing about one thing or the other. Make no mistake though- these men were laughing while they were working. There was no one playing "grab-a**" during the day. On the second day, they were back in force again. the finished roof looked great. They left my yard clean and in order. The wife and I called Dave numerous times before and during the job. Dave always took the time to speak to us and answer all our questions. Never once did we feel pressured into hiring Raneri & Long, or felt pressured to do any other work using his company. On the second day that the roofers were there at our house, the wife was so thrilled with the quality of the work, she ordered pizza for the entire crew; sort of a thank you for their great work. Do yourself a favor, if you need some kind of roofing repair done, at least consider calling Raneri & Long. I am completely satisfied with the quality of work and the price I paid. This was one of the few contractors I have ever hired and not feel like I got screwed.
Description of Work: Tear off 2100 sq ft of Mexican tile roof; replace termite/ dry rot damaged facia (approx 110 ft linear ft 2 x8), rafter tails (3), (2) areas of dry rotted roof sheeting plywood; install bird stop/ drip edge on tiled roof around whole house (not just the area being retiled); layed two layers of 40# felt; reinstall tile w/ double flashing around all vents and pipes; install rain gutters around entire house (after painter has painted the eaves).

Dave Hancock responded right away when we called for an estimate and got the numbers to us promptly. His price was very competitive, he was local, and he was an authorized GAF roofer which was important since we needed to replace a GAF roof which was under guarantee. The old roof was torn off in a day and the area was cleaned up so well you would not know any work had been done. The new roof was installed in less than a day and a half and looks terrific. It was a very good experience working with Dave and his crew.
Description of Work: I recently had new roofing installed and skylights replaced. They were very competitively priced, efficient and thorough. They paid attention to detail and cleaned up after themselves.

Our roof, as on many older homes that have been remodeled, has odd corners and "crickets" which have been the source of leaks and patching over the years. Our intent was to fix it once and for all. We had interviewed perhaps six other roofers, some were a couple of thousand dollars cheaper and some were a number of thousands more, but R&L stood out for the thoroughness of their explanation of what was needed and their proposed solution. Because R&L is one of the few "Master Elite" GAF installers in San Diego, they can offer what GAF calls the Golden Pledge Warranty whereby GAF stands behind the roofers warranty for 25 years, even if the roofer quits business. This, and R&L's professionalism, made the choice easy. We could not be more pleased with their crew. Most of their guys have been with them since the world was young - the lead guy for 20+ years, the newest crew member for 5+ years - and a bunch of them are brothers as well. They worked cooperatively, efficiently, quietly (at least in terms of voices - we still had the Anvil Chorus on the roof from power tools, etc) and cleanly. We actually enlarged the scope of the work partway through the job, to include a detached garage. While some companies might have bid up the price on this extra work thinking they had us over a barrel, R&L did not. I had been anxious too about the potential for escalating costs in terms of the unknowns when you pull off a roof, plywood, fascia or starter board that needs replacing. They took care of what needed to be done but did not overcharge. As an aside, I notice that one of the other reviewers felt that as a woman she had been treated with some disrespect. My own experience was completely the opposite: Dave Hancock, the owner, was gracious and always available for questions, etc. His son, Mike, is his right hand guy and equally pleasant and professional.
Description of Work: Raneri & Long did a complete tear-off and re-roofing on our home. Because we are planning to install solar, R&L worked around the contractor putting in the stand-offs for the racking system (with the Golden Pledge Warranty, see below, the stand-offs should be properly installed and flashed before the roof is completed, rather than afterwards which could compromise the waterproofing.) They also installed a number of solar light tubes.

Expensive, I must admit, but their reputation for backing up their work, their integrity, honesty, down homeyness was wonderful. They cleaned up, answered question before, throughout the work and after was done with patience and kindness. Family business and they take pride in their work. Everything looked wonderful. The son came out to make sure everything was done properly. The father gave us the estimate and went on the roof to take pictures. He showed pictures of the roof where it was damaged, wood rot, flashing gone or dried up, etc. There was no doubt in my mind after looking at the pictures that we needed a new roof. One skylight had a huge crack, another had a hole in it. You could see the wood rot from below as he pointed out where the pictures had been taken. Very good backing that we needed a new roof and that the skylights needed to be repaired. We may have paid more as well because he did replace 3 skylights and had to temporarily dismantle the solar system and re install it after the roof was done. He worked well with Lemon Grove Stucco and Kings Painters. Of the 3, we really appreciated the response, trust, and care that this company gave. I will use them on my house as this was done on my parent's house. I highly recommend this company for their honesty, integrity, and quality of work.
Description of Work: Climbed roof, took pictures of roof to show why a roof was necessary, took off old roof. Repaired/replaced old or damaged wood, temporarily removed solar tubes, put brand new roof, replaced solar tubes. Replaced three skylights. Cleaned up after each day.

Dear member, Just a note to thank you so much for your very kind review of my company! I greatly appreciate the opportunity to have provided service to you and your parents. I especially enjoyed our discussion of your teaching profession and empathize fully with your views. As I explained to you in our discussion, one of the heros of my life was my 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Schave. I have no doubt that I would've held you in that same high esteem. Again, it has been my company's sincere pleasure to have provided service! Sincerely, Dave Hancock, President Raneri and Long

Overall it was OK I guess. What I find with most contractors is that once they get your business they are not as helpful as they were when they're trying to get it. And thats always been my experience, and Raneri was the same way. I don't think the man I worked with was very respectful to women. I could definitely sense that, he kind of treated me like I didn't know what I was talking about. They did the work on Thanksgiving weekend, which I wasn't real happy about but we had a leak and I really wanted to get it taken care of. They were going to do if after Thanksgiving, they came out and they put plastic over the roof and everything to protect it, so they kept the leak from coming through the roof. That I was pleased with, they came out right away and took care of that. They had somebody cancel on the Friday after Thanksgiving, so they called me early that morning and asked if they could come. What could I say, yeah OK. They showed up with a hoard of people because they wanted to get it done in one day. There must've been at one time 12 people on my roof tearing off the old one. They got it done and then came back the next day to finish up one thing that they couldn't do that day. I've had one leak on the roof since then around one of the pipes that goes up from the heater, but I don't think it was Raneri's fault I think it was the man who installed the new pipes for the heater. Other than that the roof is holding. The one reason I went with Raneri is that they gave a 10 year warranty, everyone else would only give a 5 year warranty.

Gee, I really did try to provide "super service", both before, during, and after the sale. The price of the job sounds "high", but I worked three crews on it, along with three trucks, and got it done in one day, in between the rains, on a holiday, because it was leaking! This lady reported a leak after the roof was completed, and we came out the day after she called, repaired a leak that was caused by someone else, and didn't charge her for the repair. I feel terrible that I, or possibly one of my employees, may have said something insensitive or in any other way did something to make this lady feel that any of us were less than respectful during our contact. During the course of construction, and the accompanying noise and distractions, etc., it is possible that we said something wrong or inappropriate. If that did happen, I humbly offer my sincere appology. We will ALWAYS respond immediately and effevtively to issues which may arise on our jobs. We never "lose interest" in our customers, and if that impression was given, again I am truly sorry.

His crew replaced the shingles and existing drip board even though I told them it wasn't necessary. I had planned to have the work done by a different company. I was totally stressed out by the foregoing activities.
Description of Work: The roofing contractor gave an estimate he wanted to start on Thursday; I said they could. The crew showed up and their truck dropped off the wood which was supposed to be used for the fascia board. It was inferior quality, filled with splits, cracks and knot holes. It was a rough sawed cedar and I told him I wanted a better quality of wood. When the owner finally showed up he was very argumentative and made several personal attacks on me which were irrelevant and unprofessional. I had pointed out that his foreman had left and I didn't know anyone was in charge. One of his employees was wearing flip flops on the roof, safety issue, and I asked him to put on proper shoes if he was going to work for me. When the owner finally showed up he was irate and said he couldn't work for someone like me because he couldn't please me and he became angry. He told his men to put the original roof singles and "drip board" back in place like it was originally and then left.

I TRIED TO PLEASE THIS CUSTOMER AFTER FINDING OUT THAT SHE HAD ALREADY HAD TERRIBLE RELATIONS WITH ANOTHER COMPANY. AFTER STARTING THE JOB, IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO PLEASE THIS LADY. WE USED LUMBER SPECIALLY MILLED FOR FASCIA BOARDS, BUT THE LADY REFUSED THE LUMBER, SAYING THAT IT WAS INFERIOR. THE LUMBER WAS, IN FACT, THE SAME LUMBER THAT ANY NEW HOME WOULD BE CONSTRUCTED WITH. WHEN I EXPLAINED THIS TO HER, SHE BECAME IRATE AND ABUSIVE. I SUPPOSE, BEING CONFRONTED WITH THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR, TO WHICH I AM NOT ACCUSTOMED, I SAID SOME HARSH THINGS MYSELF. I THEN DECIDED THAT THERE WAS NO WAY TO PLEASE THIS LADY, AND THAT WE SHOULD TERMINATE THE RELATIONSHIP. SHE THEN TOLD ME THAT SINCE SOME OF THE GUYS WERE NOT AMERICAN, THEY SHOULD SPEAK BETTER ENGLISH IF THEY WANTED TO LIVE IN THIS COUNTRY. I PUT BACK THE ROOFING WE HAD REMOVED, CLEANED UP THE AREA, AND SAID GOODBYE. I SENT HER A CERTIFIED LETTER EXPLAINING IN DETAIL THAT ALL WAS RESTORED TO THE WAY I FOUND IT ORIGINALLY, BUT SHE REFUSED THE LETTER. THE SAD PART IS THAT I NEVER CHARGED HER A PENNY FOR ALL THE WORK THAT I PERFORMED. I HAVE NOT HEARD ANY MORE FROM HER UNTIL I SAW THE ANGIE'S LIST REPORT. I HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS IN SAN DIEGO SINCE 1986 AND HAVE NEVER DEALT WITH THIS KIND OF PERSON. ADDITIONALLY, AT NO TIME WERE MY MEN WEARING "FLIP FLOPS". I GUESS IT IS TRUE THAT "NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED".

DAVE HANCOCK AND SON MIKE WERE QUITE HELPFUL IN SUGGESTING ALTERNATIVES IN ROOFING MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES, FOCUSING ON SOLVING SOME LONG-STANDING ROOFING PROBLEMS. THEY WERE ALSO FLEXIBLE IN MEETING THE OWNERS NEEDS FOR SPECIAL CONSTRUCTION METHODS AND SCHEDULING. THE AGREED-UPON PRICE WAS ABOUT MEDIAN IN A SERIES OF BIDS. THE WORK CREW WAS PROMPT, EFFICIENT IN THEIR WORK, RESPECTFUL OF THE PROPERTY AND THE NEIGHBORHOOD, AND EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD AT END-OF-DAY CLEAN-UP AND TRASH HAULING, EXCEPT FOR THE FOURTH AND FINAL DAY, WHEN THEY DEPARTED A BIT TOO QUICKLY. AT TIMES UP TO NINE WORKERS WERE ON THE ROOF (FOR TEAR OFF), WHILE ONLY TWO MASTER SHINGLERS FINISHED 3000 SQUARE FEET IN 1.5 DAYS. THE SHINGLERS WORKED LIKE ANIMALS IN THEIR SPEED AND DETERMINATION. I HAVE SOME PERSONAL ROOFING EXPERIENCE, AND I COULD DETECT NO ERRORS IN THEIR WORK (HOWEVER, IT HASNT YET RAINED!). BUT A TEN YEAR R&L GUARANTEE WILL PROVIDE COVER FOR THAT. I WOULD HIRE THIS COMPANY AGAIN.
Description of Work: ENTIRE TEAR OFF OF WORN-OUT OLD RESIDENTIAL ROOF TO BARE DECK AND RE-ROOF OF ENTIRE HOUSE (TOTAL 3500 SQUARE FEET). WORK ALSO INCLUDED REPAIR OF SMALL PORTIONS OF WATER DAMAGED ROOF DECK AND FASCIA. NEW ROOF CONSISTED OF BOTH COMPOSITION (FIBER GLASS) SHINGLES AND TORCH-DOWN ROLLED ROOFING.
