We wanted to get an estimate to replace our old water heater with a tankless water heater. They did not give us an appointment time, but scheduled us for a 4 hour window. When the rep came, he did not ask us how many bathrooms we had in the house or anything about water usage/needs. He said that we'd need to re-pipe the gas line through the entire house because the current gas line wasn't big enough. The cost for this was in the thousands. We questioned this greatly as we had already had another plumber come to quote for this job and he had no problem with the gas line. We think the problem is that Anderson only had large tankless water heaters for sale. We had no need for these larger units and thus no need to re-pipe our entire gas line. We "think" this was the problem because we never could get a really clear answer from the rep. The rep took a very long time to measure our house and still could not give us a direct quote for how much the entire job would cost. We went with the other plumber (and smaller unit) and have had no problems at all.
Description of Work: We got a quote for a new water heater, but not for the re-piping of the gas for through the entire house.

Response from Anderson Plumbing Heating & Air
I first want to thank this customer for posting their review and for their A ratings given on responsiveness, punctuality and professionalism and for the B rating on quality. I am glad to know these efforts were noticed and appreciated. I truly believe this rating program is of great value to the consumer and to business. As an owner, I take any customer opinion seriously and use their comments to improve in areas of service we provide. I am sincerely disappointed to read this clients rating in other areas of service provided. I did research our company records, spoke with the technician, his supervisor and department manager. My findings are as follows:Our technicians are factory trained and expected to be thorough in their diagnosis. In this case our technician needed to determine the BTU demand on the gas line as well as determine hot water usage of the customer. This would require a certain degree of investigation and measuring. We have access to all sizes of tankless water heaters so I assure the customer, access to a different size water heater would not have been an issue whatsoever in our recommendations. In this case the customers existing natural gas water heaters location was in their basement with the gas meter at the opposite end of the house. The existing gas system was sized to the typical homes current gas appliances. The average standard gas water heater uses approximately 35 thousand BTU’s, whereas a tankless water heater averages 199 thousand BTU’s . The increased change in demand on the current gas system required a new gas line to be run directly from the meter to the tankless. Manufacturer requirements would not have allowed installation at the existing gas line due to the BTU demand for that home. I understand the customer did have a tankless installed in that location by another party and my concern is as the BTU demand increases he/she may begin to experience problems. Any tankless water heater we install we pull a permit on which allows the city/county inspector to address any safety or installation violations. The inspector not only verifies accurate gas sizing he or she will also verify that the correct supporting and venting be in place. Tankless water heaters require stainless steel venting or special venting that is provided by the tankless manufacturer. I highly encourage this customer (if has not yet been done) to verify if a permit and inspection was included in the tankless installation; as this will allow the inspector to ensure proper installation and save this customer a headache down the line. We did contact this customer after this posted and requested permission to return to their home and investigate their concerns with our findings and recommendations. While we did speak directly to this customer, we have not had a commitment either way. We still welcome the opportunity to visit their home at their convenience and address this concern. In the event the customer has not had an inspection, we are more than willing to pay for that inspection for them. We hope to hear back from this customer as his safety and concern is very important to this company.

Good job overall, took 1 hour more than expected (4 hours total). Company was very easy to work with and they work with my schedule. Highly reccomended if you don't have time to take a couple of bids, but they are a little 'pricey', worth it though. They have a fixed price schedule.
Description of Work: Fixed a 3" drain from the second floor. Damage was caused when house was built. Plumber needed to break away exterior stucco and make a small hole in the first floor ceiling.

This is a typical case of buyer beware. The toilet had stopped up on several occasions since we moved into our newly purchased house. Previously we had had the plumbing checked and the lines were clear. The technician declared that the problem was obviously the toilet design and we woud have to replace it. I inquired about the cost of upgrading to a duel flush and was quoted $725.00. I thought that was the cost of the toilet and the repair but the total cost turned out to be $1,589. When I check today at Lowe's--the cost of a duel flush is $248 and the installation is $149. I thought because I got this company from Angies List that I could trust their word without question, I was wrong. I should have done my homework before contracting to pay $1,100.00 extra for a toilet. Update: This is an addendum to my report of 5/22/09: On July 6, 2009, Anderson Plumbing contacted me regarding my report of 05/22/09 explaining their service policies and a probable reason for the cost of the toilet and its installation. On July 15, 2009, I replied giving my reasons for feeling I had been subjected to sharp business practices. On August 4, 2009, I received a refund check bringing my total cost for the toilet in line with what I thought I had been quoted. The moral of this story is that Anderson does stand behind their promise of 100% customer satisfaction and that Angie's List is an effective forum for resolving problems with service providers.
Description of Work: Replaced toilet. Update: Adjustment of bill for services rendered previously.

I WANT TO FIRST THANK ANGIE’S LIST FOR THE WORD OF MOUTH SERVICE THEY ARE PROVIDING. I SINCERELY BELIEVE IN WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND KNOW THEY HAVE THE CONSUMERS BEST INTEREST IN MIND. I BELIEVE ALL BUSINESSES SHOULD BE ACCOUNTABLE TO THE PUBLIC AND THIS SERVICE FORCES A GOVERNING OF BUSINESS I BELIEVE IS GOOD FOR THE CONSUMER AND FOR THOSE OF US IN BUSINESS WHO CARE ABOUT DOING THINGS WELL AND FOR A FAIR PRICE. THANK YOU ANGIE’S LIST. AS ODD AS IT SOUNDS, I APPRECIATE ANY CONSUMERS COMPLAINT. IT ALLOWS ME TO TAKE A LOOK AT OUR PRACTICES AND MAKE IMPROVEMENTS. WITHOUT THESE NEGATIVE COMMENTS WE WOULD NOT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE OR REEVALUATE A PRACTICE OR POLICY. WE CALL EACH CUSTOMER AFTER OUR SERVICE IS PROVIDED TO INSURE 100% SATISFACTION. IN THIS CASE THE CUSTOMER HAD NO CONCERNS AND OUR COMPUTER NOTES INDICATE HE WAS HAPPY WITH OUR COMPANY AND THE WORK WE PROVIDED. SINCE THAT CALL HE HAS CHANGED HIS MIND. WE OFFER A 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEE THEREFORE WE WILL AGAIN MAKE CONTACT WITH THIS CONSUMER AND DO WHAT EVER IT TAKES TO MAKE SURE WE MEET OUR COMMITMENT OF 100% SATISFACTION. IT APPEARS AFTER OUR HAPPY CHECK THE CUSTOMER NOTICED AN AD FOR A DUAL FLUSH TOILET IN AN AD AND FEELS HE WAS OVERCHARGED. THE BIG BOX STORES WILL OCCASIONALLY HAVE LOSS LEADER ADVERTISEMENT TO BRING CUSTOMERS INTO THE STORE. I AM CONFIDENT THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED IN THIS CASE. I CAN ASSURE YOU THIS TOILET WILL NOT BE OF THE SAME BRAND, OR QUALITY. IT WILL NOT HAVE THE SAME WARRANTIES AND WILL NOT BE OF EQUAL VALUE. OUR PRICES ARE TYPICALLY NOT HIGHER THAN OUR COMPETITORS WHO OFFER EQUAL VALUES. WE USE HIGHEST QUALITY PARTS & ONLY CERTIFIED JOURNEYMEN PLUMBERS. OUR TECHNICIANS HOLD MULTIPLE CERTIFICATIONS. AS FAR AS THE INSTALLATION OF THIS TOILET, I UNDERSTAND THERE HAD BEEN ADDITIONAL FLANGE WORK . THIS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN QUOTED BY A BIG BOX STORE AS A STANDARD INSTALLATION AND WOULD HAVE INCREASED THEIR PRICE. TYPICALLY A LOWER PRICE IS POSTED IN THE AD AND THEN THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN AN UPCHARGE WHEN THEIR SUBCONTRACTOR ARRIVED ON SITE. REGARDLESS WE WILL DO WHAT EVER IT TAKES TO INSURE THIS CUSTOMERS SATISFACTION. MARY JEAN ANDERSON, PRESIDENT.

Anderson provided estimates for repair ($1700) and replacement at various levels of heater efficiency ($2100 - $4600). Anderson pointed out that highest level qualified for federal tax credits of $1500 (if I had not already used that credit for new tankless water heater). Replacement was completed perfectly with close attention to keeping house clean by using booties and carpet runners. Heater now runs even quieter than ever before.

First let me say this is no ordinary renovation. The home has been vacant 15 yrs with major issues. We aquired the home 3 yrs ago and got bids for renovations. At the time we could not afford everything that entailed. Now we are tackling the renovation process and plan to move in this summer. We had a bid from another plumbing company 3 yrs ago. They came out, ran a camera down the main line and told us we had substancial damage, root inclusion, holes in the cast iron pipes, etc. The only fix was to tear out the foundation and replace them, bid price $25,000. Recently I called Anderson to get another bid and Sixto came out with the camera. Unfortunately and to no blame of Anderson, his camera was too large and he said he'd need to come out another day with the smaller camera. He made sure it was a time that was convenient to me (I have a 2 month old baby and live 60 miles away) and was very curtious. They came back, were EARLY for the appointment even, and attempted to camera the lines. Sixto said he couldn't really see the condition of the pipes because of debris in the pipes. He recommended having them "jetted" to clear the lines so they could be seen better and give us an accurate assessment of the damage. We agreed and again they made an appointment that was convenient to me. Sixto returned the third day ready to work, had an assistant as well. They worked on my pipes nearly all day. They were very curtious about entering my home and everything they did, even though it's a horendous "work in progress" right now. Not your typical home with nice carpet and furniture, they treated my home as if it were that way though. At the end of the day Sixto came out to show us the tape he had shot when he recameraed the lines. He said they were in pretty good shape, no roots, little damage for the age of the pipes and all we really needed to do was rooter the secondary lines and we'd be fine. My husband and I were shocked needless to say. To go from one company telling us they would charge us $25,000 and needed to rip out the foundation to Sixto saying they were fine. We could see from his tape he was telling us the truth, he explained everything on the tape too. We feel we got extremely lucky. We are pretty handy people but when you have problems with a system that is out of the rhelm of your experience you are at the mercy of whom ever you call. Anderson Plumbing and Sixto are awesome. I can't say enough about their professionalism, curtesy, experience and execution! They were prompt, on time and were on budget to what they estimated. Every time I called their office my call was handled promptly. As a side note, I was even impressed by their cleaniness and appearance of their uniforms. Sixto even smelled great! I would not hesitate to recommend Anderson Plumbing to anyone and will absolutely be calling them again as we get further in our renovation process. They are definitely a company that stands apart!
Description of Work: I called Anderson because we are renovating a home with substancial issues. They came out to camera our pipes but there was too much debris to see anything and suggested we "jet" the pipes first and they would recamera them at no cost.

Service men were punctual and finished in the half-day originally estimated on the next day after I gave them the go-ahead. They had to work around some storage units I had installed in the garage but did so very well. The installation looks decent given that it is was done on existing construction. Price was exactly as quoted with a special $250 Anderson coupon (not sure whether because of Angie's List or because of purchasing tankless system). Unit has been in place for about a week and my family is very pleased. Tankless systems work well and cheaper but take a little mental adjustment. The hot water does not need to be set as high as we were accustomed; instead you simply mix in less cold water to get the temperature you want. I am looking forward to lower natural gas bills. I plan to use Anderson to replace the heating system in my house which also has just gone bad.
Description of Work: Replaced leaking water heater that was 10 years old, same age as house. Regular replacement unit for the special direct vent water heater was going to require special ordering at a cost of ~$3800. Anderson educated me on tankless water heaters and pointed out that I could get $1500 federal tax credit on tankless (making my net cost $2122) plus save money in the future on my gas bill. Anderson offered free initial service call to Angie's List members.

We have used this company in the past and were satisfied with their service, so when we had a systemic plumbing problem we called them. Unfortunately, our past experience was not a good indicator of current performance. Our old water softener spewed carbonated granules and gunk into our house plumbing before it died, fouling 3 toilets and the lines to our dishwasher and washing machine. We also suspected that our 12-year-old water heater may have been damaged, and was living on borrowed time. The company rep arrived on time to provide an estimate. For a new water heater, he quoted $1,300 to $1,700 for a basic or deluxe model, respectively.Installation and disposal of our old water heater and water softener was included. He quoted $190 to rebuild each toilet, plus labor to clean out the plumbing lines. The total job quote was $3,550 to clean the lines, rebuild the toilets, and install the deluxe water heater (10-year warranty). His estimate was based on a cursory examination and failed to consider damage to the washing machine or dishwasher, and when he left he failed to leave a copy of the estimate with my wife. So, we decided to do some comparison shopping. Based on a tip from a co-worker, I called Home Depot and arranged for the installation of a GE/Rheem brand water heater for under $1,000, which included a 12-year warranty and removal of the old unit. The Home Depot rep took pains to explain the features and benefits of the water heater, and installation was flawless. I then called Ideal Plumbing, who removed the dead water softener and cleaned out the plumbing lines for $650, and quoted the toilet repair at $170 each. Their plumber, Ron, was conscientious, detailed, thorough, and considerate of our time and money. For example, he suggested that we hold off on the toilet repair since we decided to replace the polybutelene plumbing with copper to avoid duplicate costs. All things considered, we saved over $1,400 by selecting Home Depot and Ideal Plumbing over Anderson.

After making a number of attempts to unblock the line, Anderson initially concluded that the blockage was in the line from my house and not in the street, and that the cause was a collapsed cast iron line [parts of my house and probably of this line are very old]. This would mean that the line would have to be excavated [one very large tree was probably in the way and would require some clever, deep, and difficult trenching]. But, to determine the route, Anderson sent an electric device down the line which it followed from the surface, marking the route to the street. However, after many, many attempts, Anderson was finally able to get the line opened up, and when a camera was put into the line, it was apparent that the problem was from roots and not any type of collapse of the line. The cost [over $1,100] in major part resulted from $350 or so for the camera video and $350 more for the device to locate the route of the line, and the rest for cutting through the roots. A lot of money to clear the drain. The Anderson people were very professional, responsive, punctual, and friendly, and, from the other reports, it obviously does very good work. However, it is really expensive, and for that reason alone, I won't use it again - at least until the latest Depression is over.
Description of Work: Sewer main from house to street was completely clogged. Previous plumber [several months earlier] had said that the problem was in the sewer main in the street and not in the line to the street. I requested that Anderson bring camera equipment to see where the problem actually was so I'd know if it was the City's problem or my problem.

Called them 9:00 Saturday morning. Told them I needed to replace poorly installed bathtub (not their work), that it was a big job, and that it couldn't wait cause tenants were very upset. Dispatcher said they could do it but would charge additional $99.00 for weekend work. Person went out and said he could do the job that day and gave estimate of $2108 plus the $99.00 "emergency" charge. He also told me I would have to buy parts and bring them to him. He then called me about 1/2 hour later and told me his manager would not let him do the job cause it would take too long, but he could do it Monday. I called someone else who did it first thing Sunday morning and charged me $1700.00. He also covered all parts. Anderson was going to charge me $2207, plus parts for work I got done faster by someone else for $400 less with all parts covered. All warranties and guarantees were identical. Needless to say, I called Anderson 1st thing Monday morning and told them their services were no longer needed.
Description of Work: No services actually performed. I was told twice they could do the job, but then, just as work was to start, I was told they wouldn't because it would take too long.

I CAN CERTAINLY UNDERSTAND THIS CUSTOMER’S FRUSTRATION. IF I HAD BEEN TOLD TWICE BY TWO SEPARATE PEOPLE THAT WE COULD DO THE JOB, AND THEN IN THE END HAD BEEN TOLD THAT WE COULDN’T DO THE JOB…. I WOULD BE FRUSTRATED TOO. I DID CHECK WITH OUR SERVICE MANAGER. HERE IS MY UNDERSTANDING OF EVENTS. OUR CUSTOMER DID CALL AT 9:09 AM. WE TRIED TO CALL THE TENANT TWICE TO CONFIRM. BOTH TIMES THERE WAS NO ANSWER. THE TENANT DID CALL BACK AT 10:22 BUT BY THIS TIME OUR TECH HAD BEEN DISPATCHED TO ANOTHER JOB. THE TENANT TOLD US THAT SHE WOULD BE GONE BETWEEN 12:30 AND 1:00. AT 12:45 OUR TECH WAS DISPATCHED TO THE JOB. AT 1:15 OUR TECH CALLED OUR SERVICE MANAGER. SHE RELATED TO ME THAT BASED THE SCOPE OF WORK AND THE TIME DELAYS IN REACHING THE TENANT, A 1:15 START ON A LARGER PROJECT COULD BECOME PROBLEMATIC. HER FEAR WAS THAT THE WORK WOULDN’T BE COMPLETED UNTIL THE WEE HOURS OF THE MORNING. THAT WAS WHY SHE TOLD HIM NOT TO START THE JOB AND TO ASK IF IT COULD BE RESCHEDULED ON MONDAY. OUR CUSTOMER WAS INFORMED OF THIS AND SEEMED TO BE O.K. WITH THAT ASSESSMENT. AFTER READING HIS COMMENTS IT IS OBVIOUS THERE IS A MAJOR MISCOMMUNICATION. PLEASE UNDERSTAND OUR DECISION TO PULL OF THE JOB AT THAT TIME WAS OUT OF RESPECT FOR OUR CUSTOMERS TENANT AND IN THE COMMUNICATION WITH OUR CUSTOMER THE TECHNICIAN THOUGHT HE HAD AGREED. I KNOW OUR CUSTOMER WAS IN A HURRY TO HAVE THE WORK DONE AND I AM SORRY WE WERE UNABLE TO DO THE JOB FOR HIM ON SATURDAY. REGARDING OUR CUSTOMER’S CONCERN ABOUT THE $99 CHARGE, THEIR WILL NOT BE ANY CHARGE FOR OUR TIME. WE ARE REVIEWING THE INCIDENT TO SEE IF THERE ARE ANY OTHER STEPS WE COULD HAVE TAKEN….AND I APPRECIATE THIS FEEDBACK. IF THIS CUSTOMER WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS IT FURTHER I WOULD BE HAPPY TO DO SO. From the start, they were very professional on the phone. After the plumber arrived, we felt he was trying to upsell us, which we felt obligated to accept due to time limitations and the needs to get plumbing completely functioning having just moved-in a couple of days before. The plumber obviously new basic plumbing, but spent more than two hours trying to figure-out the In-Sinkerator Cover Control we got. He stated that they usually can install "customer provided" products, but he was having a hard time with the sink cover magnetic mechanism and called the manufacturer. Then called a co-worker. He told me the his co-worker told him that he doesn't "mess with things like that." I felt that the plumber was not qualified to do the job and gave me the # to the manufacturer to try and see if they could help me the next day. They could not. I called Anderson on the following Monday and asked for them to get the garbage disposal to work because they guaranteed their work. I demanded not to have that same plumber come, but they sent him anyway because of some communication error. We decided to give him one last chance because he said he could probably fix it in less than 15 minutes. He called the manufacturer again and amazingly received new information from the manufacturer to install the garbage disposal and was able to fix it in less than ten minutes. He said that his boss told him to charge us the "visit fee" but he said he didn't want to do that. And it was a good idea for him not to do that!
Description of Work: We recently purchased a foreclosed property and we had just moved-in. I ordered a garbage disposal that had a magnetic protective cap to prevent children from accidentally hurting themselves. We decided with Anderson Plumbing because of their high quality ratings. While there, we also asked for quotes on other items, such as a hose bib. The total quote was about $1400, which we accepted because we felt caught between a rock and a hard place just recently moved-in and unable to utilize all of the plumbing necessities, such as the kitchen sink.

Response from Anderson Plumbing Heating & Air
AS I HAVE MENTIONED IN THE PAST, I DO APPRECIATE THE OPEN FORUM THAT ANGIE’S LIST OFFERS TO OUR CUSTOMERS AS A MEANS OF PROVIDING FEEDBACK AS TO THE QUALITY OF OUR SERVICES. IN THE COMMENT SECTION OUR CUSTOMER MENTIONED THAT WE WILL PROBABLY THANK THEM FOR THE REVIEW…AND THEN REFUTE THE FAIRNESS OF THE REVIEW. IN POINT OF FACT, I WOULD NEVER REFUTE THE FAIRNESS, BECAUSE QUITE FRANKLY CUSTOMER PERCEPTION IS REALITY. THE ENTIRE SCOPE OF WORK WAS AS FOLLOWS, INSTALLED CUSTOMER SUPPLIED KITCHEN FAUCET, CUSTOMER SUPPLIED GARBAGE DISPOSAL AND 6 ANDERSON SUPPLIED ANGLE STOPS. ALSO INSTALLED WAS A SINK WASTE ASSEMBLY AND A SINK LINE REPAIR. A NEW AIR GAP, AND HOSE BIB WERE ALSO REPLACED. OUR PLUMBER DID HAVE A CHALLENGE WITH THE CHILD PROTECTIVE CAP ON THE GARBAGE DISPOSAL. AS IN ANY INDUSTRY THERE ARE NEW TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS AND IT IS NOT UNUSUAL FOR EVEN EXPERIENCED PLUMBERS TO SEEK MANUFACTURERS’ TECHNICAL SUPPORT. ONE OF THE REASONS WE CHARGE BY THE JOB RATHER THEN BY THE HOUR IS THAT WE DON’T THINK IT IS FAIR FOR A CUSTOMER TO PAY US FOR EXTRA TIME WHEN ONE OF OUR PLUMBERS DOES EXPERIENCE DIFFICULTY ON THE JOB…..AND IT TAKES LONGER THAN IS NORMAL FOR THAT PARTICULAR REPAIR. ONCE SERVICE IS COMPLETE, WE FOLLOW UP WITH EACH OF OUR CUSTOMERS. BASED ON NOTES IN OUR JOB SUMMARY THIS CHECK WAS PERFORMED THE LAST WEEK IN JUNE WHEN THE JOB WAS COMPLETED. EVEN THOUGH THIS JOB WAS COMPLETED 4 MONTHS AGO I WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO DISCUSS THIS SITUATION FURTHER WITH OUR CUSTOMER. PLEASE GIVE ME A CALL. THANK YOU, MARY JEAN ANDERSON.

I had a leak in a hot water line under the slab in my 35-year-old house. Anderson subbed out the leak detection to another company. Once the leak was located, the repair went very smoothly and quickly. Anderson's technician was polite and very professional, and thoroughly explained the problem to me. In the course of the repair, he discovered the pressure regulator (on the main water line into the house) was not working (it was original), and he recommended it be replaced to avert any future leaks, and I had that work done also. I also asked if he could replace my very old (1987) hot water heater, and he did that also.
Description of Work: Hot water slab leak repaired; new pressure regulator installed; new hot water heater installed.

I called Anderson, and spoke with a female. We scheduled for a technician to come out for a service call for plumbing. The technician came out the next day. Since we were an Angie's member the service call would be free. I also requested pricing for our heaters but we decided to go with another company due to a better price. I was impressed that they called to let us know that their technician was on their way. Although, he did not arrive for another hour. The technician originally stated that he could clean out our clogged drain for $182. He was not able to access our drain due to the age of it so he did not charge us for it. He gave us some alternatives to accessing the drain to fix the problem and left a written quote for future services when we are ready. He also recommended for us to update our gas valve. He installed our gas shutoff and flex line. He was knowledgeable and professional.
Description of Work: The technician checked our clogged drain in the bathroom and installed our gas shutoff and flex line for the kitchen stove.

They are pricey, but they were efficient and fast. He was courteous. I have not had any problems. I get the feeling that I got good quality of work. I would probably use them again.
Description of Work: My toilet was leaking water. I wanted them to come and take a look to see what the problem was. They told me I needed a new part. I decided to just go ahead and replace all 3 of my toilets.
