I've used their services in the past. They have a fancy pricing sheet that has categories with a low price-high price for each. I have NEVER had them provide the lower price for any category (interestingly, when a previous call required a minimal upgrade--the price went to the highest margin of the next category...). This time, needed a simple washer assembly repaired. Tech stated that I needed to completely upgrade not only the washer assembly but all the exterior hardware as well--this was "how it is done." Unless the other plumbers I had bid are all incompetent, this wasn't exactly a true statement. Nice answering service, fairly prompt, but ridiculous pricing. Likely won't be using them again.

Thank you Angie’s List! We appreciate the service you provide to the customer and service provider. This review offered a great learning/training opportunity. I spoke with the technician to ask why he did not offer the simple washer replacement. He explained replacement of just the washers would not hold. He considered this a “Band-Aid” repair and would last less than 6 months. Never the less, our obligation is to thoroughly explain ALL options, the positive and negative of each and let the customer decide. Eddie fell short. He should have explained we would replace the washers with a limited warranty. He should have explained replacement of the washers would put a new smooth surface rubbing against a rough pitted surface of the stems, possibly causing a premature leak. He offered a complete rebuild including new trim so the customer receives a like new faucet with a 5 year warranty. He should have also offered a 3rd option, complete replacement. A replacement would bring the non-pressure balanced fixture to code (law) with pressure balancing. With all 3 options, pros and cons, the customer could then make an educated preferred repair. We have used this review to improve our communication training.Mary Jean Anderson, President

We found them from a flyer they sent out for a discounted check up on AC/ heating unit. The gentleman who came out was very good and professional. He was quick to determine there was nothing wrong with the unit and didn?t charge any extra from the initial coupon.

Watch out! Price gougers, don't believe the "free" water heater call.
Description of Work: I called because of generally good ratings and the fact that, because it was a water heater call, they'd waive the service fee. When the serviceman gave me the "up front" price of $390 I almost fainted! Then he said since I'm a "preferred customer" he could lower it to $332. I asked why so much just to change out the hot water 24" line? He gave me the have to pay the overhead and insurance speel. I said no thanks and called another Angie's List provider who charged me $143.00.

First, I want to thank the writer of this review for the B in professionalism. I am thankful for taking notice and posting of the B. I do question the F in quality since we did not perform any work. We regularly check our pricing in comparison to like service providers and are in line with competitors. Something must be very different in our proposed work versus what this customer had received from another vendor. Like for like, there is no way our pricing would be almost 3 times more for the same work. I will try to make contact with the reviewer to see if I can get further information on the bid comparisons. We do offer some of the strongest guarantees in the industry. All of our technicians are factory trained and certified, drug tested, have had criminal background checks including the National Pedophile Registry, have had a complete physical and psychological testing. Our pricing is preset per task. We charge the same price for the same job to every customer, every single time. You do not pay for the time of a technician who may be slower than others or gets interrupted by the dispatcher in the middle of your job or finds the part he thought was going to work will not. No matter how long the job takes you will pay one price and that does not change. My experience has been widely appreciated by our customers, since what each really wants to know is the bottom line cost for their repair. Thank you, Mary Jean Anderson, President

Personnel were great, just too high priced!
Description of Work: Called for an estimate on a small extension of a line for a gas dryer. Their quote was 4 times that of other bids. On a previous quote on a new A/C unit they were 20% higher than the highest bid. They may do good work, but are unaware of restraints of the economy!

Thank you to this customer for the B in professionalism, the B in punctuality and the B in responsiveness. I will make contact with this customer to see if I can compare bids received apple to apple. Our bid included a permit from the governing city. I will ask if the repair was made to code and if a permit was pulled and inspection passed by the city. It is law that a permit be pulled on every gas line repair. This is a protective measure for the customer. An improperly run gas line could be extremely dangerous. The permit for this specific repair is about $150. Permit costs have had a drastic increase over the past 2 years. We have not contol over what the city charges. I can tell by the trucks GPS, the technician was on site for over 30 minutes. I confident he gave a very thorough and complete estimate. We check our pricing with competitors regularly and know our pricing is in line when you compare like for like. We are extremely thorough in our diagnosis and in our bid detail. We only use top of the line parts and equipment. An example… we only buy American made copper, we do not buy copper from China or Mexico. We do offer some of the strongest guarantees in the industry. All of our technicians are factory trained and certified, drug tested, have had criminal background checks including the National Pedophile Registry, have had a complete physical and psychological testing. Our pricing is preset per task. No matter how long the job takes you will pay one price and that does not change. Thank you! Mary Jean Anderson, President

I'm more of a person who reads reviews than one who writes them, but because I wrote a review on my great experience the first time, I felt it was really important to do a follow up after this experience. I'm thrilled to know Anderson can take care of customers complete water treatment needs because after the research I've been doing online about water quality in San Diego (which is horrible by the way) I will be telling friends about the totally affordable option I found to solve the problem of crappy water.
Description of Work: My neighbor got a new water filter and after tasting her water in comparison to mine, I wanted one too. Anderson came out, conducted a water chlorine test and a hardness test, determining I didn't need a softener, but did need a carbon filter (granted I already knew this, but it was nice to see them provide the same info based on actual test results - the test was free by the way). The whole house unit was most attractive option for us due to lack of required maintenance and overall benefits (bottled quality water from my shower was a biggie). They literally had the filter on the truck and it was up and running in less than 2 hours. I love this company.

Their price included everything which was helpful. Other companies were hard to compare - 4 companies gave me 4 different prices for the permit fee ($107, $175, about $100, and $100-$250). Some installers included this in estimate, others said it was separate and would add to final price. City of San Diego had a fee schedule that was hard to interpret. I called the listed # for more info and was given an estimated hold time of >99 minutes, so I gave up. Anderson's price seemed reasonable especially since it included a 5 yr labor warranty (instead of the standard 1 yr labor). Michael Rojas was the technician who gave me the estimate by phone and installed the new water heater (with help from another tech on the 2nd day). He gave me a 2 hour window and called me when he was on the way ~25-30 minutes in advance so I could stay at work until then. Michael seemed to be very knowledgeable and honest. He gave me advice on other plumbing issues also without trying to pressure me in to any additional work/expenses. On the first day when he came out to do the installation we discussed the water damage to the pedestal the heater sits on from the previous 2 leaks and I decided I needed to do something to prevent mold from moisture trapped under the drywall. Anderson plumbing works with JW Restoration & Cleaning to coordinate the water heater installation with repair/drying since this often a problem. Michael called the company while he was at my house so they could come out for an estimate. While waiting he drained the old leaking water heater so when he came back the next day it wouldn't take as long. JW Restoration came out and I decided to go forward with at least the old drywall removal and drying despite the very high price ($750 without any replacement) so it could be coordinated easily with the water heater installation. This was critical because the old water heater had to be removed by Anderson plumbing and before installing the new one the other company had to remove the water damaged surface it sits on and clean up, spray to prevent mold etc., all while the Anderson tech is still there before he puts the new one on the shelf. Then the water damage company had to wait for the new one to be installed before they put the dehumidifier in place. If I had to hire the company separately it would have been a nightmare missing a lot more work on multiple days, paying for more trips to the house, more days with no hot water, etc. The water heater installation went smoothly - Michael and the other tech did a great job and cleaned up well. The cost exactly matched the estimate - no surprises. I'm very pleased with the quality of the products Anderson Plumbing supplies and with the quality of their technicians. I also talked to Michael about the toilets they install and was happy to find out they install the top rated ones I'd already researched. I will be hiring them again in the near future for toilet installation.
Description of Work: Water heater installation: Anderson Plumbing drained & recycled old water heater & installed new Bradford White water heater (which they supplied) with all of the required flex lines, seismic braces, etc. The Anderson Plumbing technician also arranged to have another company come out to deal with repairing the water damaged shelf that the water heater sits on and coordinated water heater installation with the repair/drying. The price included everything (the new tank, disposal of old one, replacement of all hoses etc., city permit fees, tax, 5 yr labor warranty & 6 yr tank & parts warranty). My 8.5 yr old water heater suddenly started leaking so we had to shut off the hot water until the new one was installed. I found my 2001 receipt for the installation of the previous (now leaking) water heater - ARS clearly overcharged me back then and I wanted to avoid that this time and hopefully get a better water heater. I spent hours over several days looking up reviews and info about different water heater types, brands & models, getting estimates and details on installation, trying to figure out the actual cost of a water heater permit from city of San Diego, etc. I finally chose Anderson Plumbing to install a Bradford White gas tank water heater (which they supply).

Overall it went well. The technician came out and looked at my furnance. He troubleshot it great, replaced my thermostat, cleaned the furnance really well, installed a nice new filter, and even hooked the wire to run only the fan. What I didn't like was the fact that I could barely understand him. His english was not so great. I also felt like he was trying up sell me on everything we talked about. He was very pushy on selling me a annual maintenance plan which I eventually agreed to but relunctantly. Overall I think this company is a very high quality company but I feel they over charge. I would consider this company as a premium service company. Do they great work, but if you're on a budget like I am, you're better off going with someone else.

Water was leaking at our garage foundation. Called Anderson Plumbing they quoted a window of hours plumber would be available, receptionist called back within half hour and said plumber was available now. Plumber advised us of work and cost options when he arrived. He recommended a leak detector company to locate exactly where the leak was. When the leak source was determined; option was to dig up slab or re-plumb through open attic. My neighbor has slab dug up multiply time for leaks, we opted for rerouting copper pipe through attic. Plumber stayed and completed the job that same day. The completed job looked very good and required replacing the pressure regulator and shut off valves. Plumber had to determine best way to make copper junctions, and path to route pipe. Plumber was very proficient. Plumbing is not inexpensive but the work was much better than a previous expensive plumbing repair I had done. Ruben had all parts on his truck to complete the job.

Box valve supplying water to refrigerator/freezer leaked inside the wall one night. Came out that night and capped the line. Main office called to check up on satisfaction with the work. I highly recommend this company.

Company offered special pricing for Heating unit Service. All went well until the last few minutes of the job. The service man suddenly found a gas leak and starter issue. In the minutes following he quoted one price to repair and then came back from his truck with another price. We decided to wait and contact our Home Warranty folks to see if coverage would apply. After the fact we realized the service man never cut off gas to the unit (one would expect that for a leak). We then called the gas company SDGE who promptly came that evening. He found nothing wrong with the unit. Did mention there was a very small leak which he easily repaired at N/C. SDGE stated the unit is safe and usable for probably several more years. We called Anderson the following work day and reiterated the scenario. There was no response - except something to the effect that it's nice to know the unit was okay. My decision not to use them again, had more to do with - if we didn't hesitate - the unnecessary repair would have cost us over $750.00+ and knowing the stated safety issue of leaking gas that he didn't shut it off.

I have tried to contact this customer personally. The number we have on file rings with no answer and no answering device. I will be sending a copy of this response to this customer in hopes she will contact me. I am very concerned that there is still a gas leak and the customer is not aware of this. Further, I realize this all took place October 22nd when she most likely was not using the system. Tightening the gas control, (not shut off valve), is not a recommended repair by the manufacturer. You cannot tighten to manufacturer specifications and there are no repair parts available to any or us; especially on a 30 year old system. It is a standard work practice to replace their gas control valve when it becomes defective and/or is leaking. I am not sure what the SDG&E employee could have tightened down to stop the leak. I believe it is still leaking and if not it will be soon. SDG&E technicians do not have the same education, certifications, experience or expertise we have and it is my opinion that he should not have touched the valve. I will be sending a copy of this to SDG&E as well. With regard to the age of this system, I have heard of systems lasting over 40 years so it is very possible this customer will give her another 10 years if maintained regularly and repaired as needed. It will be an energy guzzler but in this economy, many people must repair instead of replace. This is completely understandable. With regard to the gas being left on, it was a small leak and the technician states he cleaned up the furnace so that it met the requirement of the customers home warranty company. It was our technicians understanding she would be calling them out right away to make the repair. I completely agree with the customer, we should have shut the gas regardless of the extent of the leak. This will not happen again on any call.

I thank this customer for their comments. We sincerely appreciate the opinions of the community and take them very seriously. Angie's List customers do not pay our standard $42 evaluation fee. The customer service representative from our Company should have put that information into the notes and it should have been sent to the technician. I will investigate how this happened so it does not happen to another Angie's List client. I appreciate this customer noticed the scope of our work as outlined in our bid was itemized and thorough, where our competitors were not "the work for the project was itemized but all of the other bids were going to the the same thing". Our work from the first quote to the finish of the project is very detailed. There is never an extra charge for something missed in the original bid. It would be interesting to know if the project was completed thoroughly and without any additional extra charges. Again, thank you Angie's List for providing a great service to the customer and to the contractor. Mary Jean Anderson, President

Service tech was great when he arrived, professional, considerate of our home and friendly. Note, when you are given a service window here; it means they will call you within that 5 hour window to confirm the approx. time that the tech will arrive. I was not happy after waiting most of the day to receive a call 10 minutes before the 5 hour window expired to tell me the tech was on the way... However, I will mention that we did receive an update that we were next in line, 3 hours into the window. I scheduled the appointment 2 days in advance and asked that the scheduler would confirm the part needed to make the repair was with the driver (after reading other reviews). After the long wait, the driver did not have the part in the truck and had to go get one to finish the work.

The technician climbed into the attic to look at the furnace, once he removed the cover he discovered the cover to the inducer motor was cracked. He explained that the cover for these models where know to have this type of defect. The technician explained how the motor functions and how the crack was affecting the furnace?s performance. A new motor was ordered and installed. The technician was very professional, always but shoe covers on when entering the house. Long story short, after a week of someone in the house running out of hot water in the morning shower rotation we knew we had a problem that needed to be fixed. A neighbor recommended Anderson Plumbing so I gave them a call. They scheduled the appointment for the next morning after I got the kids to school. The tech was there on time - honestly that was a pleasant surprise since I generally block off an extra couple hours for service work because they're notoriously late. My first impression was that this was the cleanest, most professional looking plumber I'd ever seen. He was very thorough and was able to identify the problem immediately and provide me with options for repair or replacement. I was very appreciative of the information he was able to provide me about the tax rebate options and energy savings to help me make an informed decision. We called my husband together on speaker phone and were able to make a decision we were all pleased with. We scheduled the installation of our new tankless system for the next morning and once again he was on time, had what he needed to get the job done quickly, cleaned up after himself and left me feeling confident that the job was done right and we would be happy with our decision. In talking with some other folks, I may have paid a little more than I might have somewhere else, but no one else was given the info on the tax rebates to make that super easy like I was and I'm sure that if I have any problems at any point in the future I won't have to chase someone down to get it taken care of. Anderson Plumbing Heating and Air may not be the cheapest outfit in town, but I'm confident that it's a case of getting what you pay for.

After I hooked up the the plumbing, I noticed water was leaking out from underneath a wall in the kitchen. Since I wasnt able to determine the source of the leak I was forced to cut a hole in the wall. That was when I found the cast iron drain line (that was cut by Anderson Plumbing during the remodel) was cracked all the way into the foundation. This crack was not there prior to the remodel as the drain pipe functioned perfectly before and never leaked. I immediately called Anderson Plumbing as I knew I had a warranty (one of the reasons I chose them). They sent out Fernando the next day. Fernando came out and immediately stated he did not cause the damage to the pipe. I explained to Fernando that the damage was not there prior to him performing the work and requested to speak with his manager. Sixto came out, took one brief look at the damage, and immediately stated the damage was not caused by Fernando and Anderson Plumbing was not responsible. Sixto blamed it on "old pipes." Sixto told me he would talk it over with his boss to see if there was anything he could do. What he did was offer to repair the damage at a cost of $2500 dollars!?! This repair involved jack hammering out the foundation in the kitchen to repair the pipe. Meanwhile Fernando suggested using a pipe re-lining company, instead of Anderson Plumbing, as the process was less obtrusive. Needless to say I wasn't going to use Anderson Plumbing again. I went with a pipe re-lining company (Nu-Flow) who repaired the pipe, and hydrojetted all my pipes for half the cost. Additionally, the plumbers at Nu-Flow pointed out that Anderson Plumbing made a huge mistake by cutting the cast-iron drain pipe with a reciprocating saw instead of a diamond tipped grinder. They suggested the vibration alone from the reciprocating saw is probably what caused the crack. They told me they (and most plumbers) don't cut cast iron pipes with reciprocating saws for that very reason. I have sent several e-mails to Julie McCallon at Anderson Plumbing to try to resolve this issue but they have never responded. Unfortunately I don't have the time or money to take them to small claims court or I would. Anderson Plumbing refused to correct a problem they created and did not stand by their guarantee. I would not suggest using them. I should have used the company that remodeled my bathrooms.
Description of Work: In May 2009 I hired Anderson Plumbing to do some plumbing work in my do-it-yourself kitchen remodel. The work was completed by Fernando. Initially I was happy with the price, guarantee, and overall quality of the work performed. That was until July, when I finally connected all the plumbing after completing the kitchen (see below for the horror story that followed).

As I have said many times, I appreciate the forum that Angie’s list provides for customers and companies alike. I have no problem with receiving feedback, both bad and good. We know from time to time, we will make mistakes……and each and every time we will do our best to rectify these mistakes. We then use that information to make changes for the better. There is a “dark side” to this forum however. (My next comments are not in any way an indictment of Angie’s list.) There is an opportunity for competition, people with ulterior motives, and some customers to use half truths, innuendo, and out right lies to impugn a company’s reputation. Sometimes these obvious distortions of the truth are truly despicable. Despicable behavior calls for drastic action….we are FIRING THIS CUSTOMER AND WE WILL NEVER DO WORK FOR HIM AGAIN and we urge others in our industry and in other service industries to be wary of this customer as well. Here are the facts; 1) In accordance with our 100% satisfaction guarantee, we refunded this customer the entire amount of the job, $1656. 2) There is absolutely no way we caused the crack in his drain line. As part of the job, we cleared the drain with a water jetter. What this means is the drain line is subjected to over 1500 pounds per square inch of water pressure. I would ask anyone reading this to put a jetter that operates at such high pressure into a cracked water line, and have it not leak. In other words, it would have leaked immediately. According to the customer he found the leak two months after we had subjected the line to the jetting process. 3) Since the damage was not caused by anything that we did and we had proof there wasn’t a leak when we jetted the pipe, we offered to fix the drain line for $2500 just as the customer stated. The member claims that he was able to get the work done for ½ the cost. We obtained a copy of the Nu Flow contract and the price he actually paid was $2950….$450 more than what we quoted! We would be happy to share a copy of that invoice with anyone who would like to confirm what we are saying is true. 4) The customer states that a huge mistake was made when we used a reciprocating saw instead of a diamond tip grinder to cut the drain line. Either the member misunderstood or the Nu Flow technician misinformed the member. There are two types of blades that are recommended for cutting cast iron pipe, either diamond or carbine blades in a reciprocating saw. A reciprocating saw with a diamond blade will not crack a cast iron drain pipe as stated. Don’t take my word for it though, Google “cast iron pipe cutting” and you will find volumes of information that support what I am sharing with you. (The main reason a diamond tip grinder would be used is it is faster) 5) The customer states that he has sent emails to our service manger, Julie McCallon and she has never responded. We have 5 emails that show there wasn’t any lack of communication. To say that we never responded shows a severe lack of memory at best and an outright lie at worst. 6) I would be happy to give the member his day in small claims court. In fact we will even pay the fee so that the member can file. There is no doubt in my mind that with all of the documentation that we have concerning this transaction, that we would win easily. I’ve been in business since 1978 and I can count on one hand customers like the member……..customers that deserved to be fired. I care a lot about my company and the services that we provide, and the ethical way we do business. We are a recipient of several Angie’s list Super Service awards, we have been a finalist 5 of the 7 years we have entered the Better Business Bureau’s Torch Award for Business Ethics. Bottom line is I love this business and I love my customers, but I will not allow gross distortions of facts to go unchallenged. Thanks for reading this rather long response. Mary Jean Anderson

I was getting estimates for repairing mom's AC. I told them that her caregiver/friend and she were not authorized to start any work without my approval as I am in charge of my 85 year old mother's finances on large expenses. They came over, told her it was $1100 to fix which was $400 higher than our other estimate. They replaced the coolant, a few other parts and a new thermostat and took a check without contacting me. To their credit, the person I dealt with after this was very nice and responsive and we did get a refund because it was in the notes that they were not supposed to do any work without my okay. However, three weeks later it broke again and we had to get the entire unit replaced (by someone else of course) They also gave us a report and an estimate the same day to replace the Heater and AC. it was about $8500 and they never mentioned the possibility of putting in an energy saving unit which after rebate is only a little higher. He said the heater had cracks in it. SDGE and two other companies found NO cracks! We did have another company on Angie's List replace the Heater and AC with the energy saver and after the rebate, it was about $4500 for everything. That is $4000 less than Anderson's for a unit with the same warrantee and a little higher quality unit. The man that I dealt with about all of this was easy to reach and friendly but I would not recommend them, both because of the price and that they were mistaken about the crack.
Description of Work: Called for free estimate from the Angie's List coupon for inspection of my 85 year old mother's AC and Heater. They did some repairs on the AC without my okay and it was $400 higher than other estimates. Then it broke again.

First of all I want to thank Angie’s list for providing this forum for customers and companies alike. A format such as this gives us the opportunity to gain customer feedback and at the same time be able to share “our side of the story." Two things need to be made absolutely clear. 1) As soon as we found out there had been a mistake made concerning the authorization of work, we refunded the entire amount so all work was done for free. 2) There absolutely was a crack in the heat exchanger. Both the caretaker and this ladies mother were shown the crack. It was in the third chamber to the left as you face the furnace….just above the seam. (please read on for details) The person who wrote this review is correct. We were given instructions not to do any work with out her authorization. The problem was our dispatcher failed to convey that message to our technician in the field. When our technician arrived at the home, he was met by the caretaker. The caretaker had a checkbook. She indicated to our technician that she had the authority to make the decision. Our technician spent a little over 3 ½ hours at the home making the repairs that he thought he was authorized to make. When we found out a mistake was made, the daughter of our customer was contacted. We refunded the entire $1128.55, so all repairs were done at no cost. Concerning the crack in the heat exchanger, misdiagnosis of a heat exchanger crack can result in extreme sickness and even death. We send our technicians to one of the top heat exchanger experts in the industry to learn how to diagnose cracks in heat exchangers. Since this training results in our technicians finding cracks that other companies miss, we require our technicians to specifically indicate on the invoice where the crack is found. If a customer gets a second opinion and that company is unable to find the crack, we will meet the company at the home and show them the crack. This also includes the utility company. This offer was made to this customer in an email correspondence on 8/22/09 and there was no response. In each instance when a customer has taken us up on that offer, we have been able to show the other company exactly where the crack is, and once shown they have agreed that there is indeed a crack. We have 100% accuracy rate Concerning the pricing of the unit and not offering an energy efficient model, on 8/3/09 an email was sent to this customer explaining the benefits of a 95% furnace, offering a senior discount and providing her with a net retail after rebate. To recap, we refunded all of her money in accordance with our 100% satisfaction guarantee, we offered at no cost to this customer to meet any of the companies that were disputing the crack in the heat exchanger and show them exactly where the crack was, and we shared with the customer the benefits of the tax rebate when installing a high efficiency furnace. Should anyone care to verify what happened during this transaction, I would be happy to share all email correspondence in private. I am very proud of our company’s record, our people, and the way we respond should a complaint occur. We have been finalist 5 of the 7 years we have entered the Torch Award for Business Ethics. Doing the right thing for our customers is something we take very seriously. People are entitled to voice their opinion, but in this case I am really not sure what else we could have done to satisfy this customer Sincerely, Mary Jean Anderson

They did get my A/C running again, but I thought the price was out of range for what was done. I also requested a quote on a new A/C and a fellow came out and never sent a quote. I'll look elsewhere next time.

They came out in a timely manner. They had a license for them to work. They are a little pricey, but they do quality work and they stand behind it. I have had them out before and they have always done a first rate job.
Description of Work: I hired Anderson Plumbing Heating & AC to clean out my stopped up kitchen sink.
