Plumber arrived on time and proceeded with the water heater flush. Flush took about 30 minutes. House plumbing Inspection took approximately 30 minutes. The inspection included looking for toilet leaks and leaks under the sinks. He recommended replacing the internal "guts" of the guest toilet as the parts were showing wear and some rust. He provided an estimate ($250 or so). I declined as I believed this too expensive. I would just purchase another toilet (with new internals) and have it installed via an Angie's List Big Deal in the future.

Our water heater is at least 10 years old, and needs to be replaced soon. Anderson came and flushed it, and inspected it. They also inspected the rest of the house which was built in 1959. Fortunately, the only other issues they found were ones we knew about - primarily a leaky faucet in the shower. We were pleased with the promptness, professionalism and quality of the service. And we were very pleased with the Angie's List deal of $59.00. My only negative was that I felt that the estimate for repaining the leaky faucet was exceptionally high. We were quoted over $300.00. When I said that seemed very high, I was told that it was because the house was so old, and they'd have to go to a specialty plumbing supply in El Cajon to get the replacement valve stem. The following Saturday, I took out the old valve stem, and whent to Home Depot where I found a replacement for under $12.00. It took me, a semi-handy home owner, probably 45 minutes to turn off the water, remove the old stem, replace the new stem, and turn the water back on. I imagine that a skilled plumber could have done it in under 30 minutes. The upshot is that I think I got a good deal for the water heater flush and plumbing inspection. But I felt like I was grossly over quoted on a simple repair. So I would use them again if I felt that the price was fair for the work to be done.

The workers arrived as scheduled on October 19. The two men who were working on the project repeatedly called in to the company for instructions as to how to do the job. I left for a couple of hours. When I returned there was a second truck. The man who was there told me he didnt have anything to do, so he decided to stop by. I found out later that he was the supervisor. The job was supposed to take three hours. It took 6. While they were working I could hear them talking about personal things such as girlfriends. When the job was done the man showed me how the heater worked. He showed me how to light the pilot light. It was the SAME kind of pilot light as the heater we had before, not the self igniting heater that was promised. There is a fan on the top of the heater. It didnt work. The wall where the thermostat was had several unsightlyscrew holes because of a misfitting thermostat that had to be replaced. The workers left. I emailed the owner of the company describing my dissatisfaction with the work performed and the heater that was installed. She called me to discuss my concerns and promised to make it right. A week later on October 30 the company sent two more workers who installed the correct heater and fixed the holes in the wall. The second heater was installed correctly and the fan worked. The company sent out an electrician to install the correct wiring for the fans. They also replaced some venting. I dont know why they had to do it since the first guys should have done it. They didnt try to charge us any more for the work they did. In the end we are satisfied with the heater and installation.
Description of Work: We called them to inspect our wall heater which was 20 years old and would not light. The service man was very professional. He told us that the heater had cracks that were dangerous. We agreed that the heater was unsafe and needed to be replaced. The service man told us that they would replace the heater with one that self ignites when the thermostat kicks on so that there will be no pilot light to light. Since we are senior citizens, we were happy that we would not have to get down on the floor and fiddle with matches and confusing buttons to light the pilot light. We signed a contract for $2500. We were told that this would include replacing venting through the attic to the roof and replacing the non functioning thermostat.

Response from Anderson Plumbing Heating & Air
Thank you Angie's List for having the only review site that offers verifiable true reviews. I am grateful there is a place customers can go to find the truth about a company. Prior to Angie's List, customers had to go to the yellow pages but really never knew what they were getting. You had to hope the service provider provided quality, prompt service with fair prices. With Angie's List everything is right there...real experiences by real people, the best of both worlds. As a business owner I LOVE Angie’s List! Of course we appreciate receiving our straight A reviews but even more important Angie’s List gives the customer a place to go to voice their opinion when things go wrong. As well, we get the opportunity to fix things in our business that might be broken. Again, win/win for us all. In this case I thank the customer for allowing us the opportunity to do just that. We had a few things go wrong on this install (Murphy’s Law) but we were able to make it right with the customer. It also gave me the opportunity to look at some of our processes and procedures and make corrections there as well. I will always give 100% to ensure customer satisfaction. That is who I am and what I stand for. Like the commercials say “I love you Angie” Mary Jean Anderson President/Owner

The technician, Fernando, arrived as promised and at the beginning of the 3-7 PM time period agreed upon. He was polite and explained everything he was going to do. He looked at my 12-year old GE water heater and immediately indicated that there was a big problem. The water heater had a plastic flush valve, rather than the more expensive brass valve, so he said that flushing the tank would more than likely result in it leaking afterwards. He then asked the last time I had had it flushed, and I said that this was to be the first time. He stated that I should have done the flushing on an ANNUAL schedule, so flushing it now would not be of any benefit (and could result in leaking). He did go ahead with the whole house inspection and checked the water pressure coming into the house (which was within normal values). He gave me an estimate for a new water heater and recommended replacing some of the shut off valves under the bathroom sinks. He did not do the water heater flush because of the age of the heater, and I had no idea that I was supposed to flush it every year when I paid for this Big Deal. So that is why I am requesting a refund of the $59 that I paid for the service UPDATE: I did get the $59 refund, so I am happy.
Description of Work: I bought a Big Deal for $59 for a water heater drain & flush, plus a whole house inspection.

After cabling and unclogging a sewer main to the street, Anderson was asked to provide a video of the line and cost estimate to repair. (They would not clear the line and video the pipe on the same service call.) They came out and videoed the line and found two offsets. They provided an estimate of $4557 to repair a 3 ft. section of damaged pipe in the lawn and said they would file plumber's report with city where the line had an offset on city property near/in the street. They came out videoed the line and found two offsets. They provided an estimate of $4557 to repair 3 ft. section of damaged pipe in the lawn and said they would file plumber's report with city where the line had an offset on city property near/in the street. I called Anderson twice asking for a copy of the video and requestiing to talk to the plumber who made the estimate. He called me back once to discuss the estimate and said that he would file a report with the city and send the video. I haven't received the video and there has been no report to the city as far as I know. I got a couple of other bids and a got different opinion from other plumbers. One, without seeing any video, gave a price about 5 times lower than Anderson for the same scope of work . The other plumber re-cabled and re-videoed the line to the street and only found a low spot on city property. He sent me the video that I reviewed. The so-called "damaged offset section" in the lawn is a junction in the pipe called a property drop, where the line turns abruptly downward. The offset in the street was not an offset, but rather a low section of pipe that creates a water/grease trap and the source of the blockage. After reviewing the video, I believe that the second plumber is right. There is no offset in the street and offset in the lawn is a junction in the pipe. There is no evidence of a break in the pipe as water sits in the low spot on city property. The other plumber said that the city was broke and would not repair the low spot if it could be cleared by other means and that the home owner is responsible for any such maintenance.
Description of Work: 1. Cabled clogged main sewer line to street through clean out in yard. 2. Cleared blockage. 2. Videoed the line and provided cost estimate to repair.

First the earthquake shut-off and then the work on the water heater. There always seems to be something that can be repaired. And it seems that the prices are very hight after ten years of not having any work done.
Description of Work: Originally it was to be for an earthquake shut-off by after that was completed for the quoted price the person also found that the piping on the water heater was corroded, so he fixed that -- for what I considered too large a price, but I went ahead and did it since it seemed to be necessary. All in all the work was done well, although I guess that I am a little stunned by the prices these days since I have had no work done for at least 10 years.

Anderson Plumbing installed the gas shut-off for the big deal price and I thought very little about it after that. A few months later we had no gas coming to the house but, since we hadn't had an earthquake, I never thought about the shut-off. Called Anderson and they sent someone out - seems the landscapers had jarred the valve and the shut-off feature did exactly what it was supposed to do. So basically Anderson did the job quickly and neatly, at the specified cost and the system works - couldn't ask for more.

On Monday morning I called Steve Bailey Air Conditioning and Heating. The serviceman came out right away and fixed in in 45 minutes. He replaced the blower motor, had one on his truck, added Freon to the system and AC was working better than ever. Total cost was $390. My advice if you AC ever breaks down, NEVER call Anderson unless you like to get the run around and get ripped off.
Description of Work: On Saturday 8/11/12 my AC quit working, during a heat wave. I called Anderson and they came out that afternoon. The serviceman said I needed a new blower motor and he would have to order it, the cost would be approximation $800 and may take a week to fix it. He also said I may have to replace the entire system, cost about $8000. He was supposed to call back and make a firm estimate, they never did call back. Anderson did honor the coupon from Angie's list so the service call was free.

not installed UPDATED AUGUST 15, 2012: This is an addendum to a rather scathing review I wrote re. this company on 8-13-2012. I had an appointment set up to have the listed equipment installed, however the company did not show on the date and time and I eventually learned that the work had been scheduled for 8-14-2012 and I had not been notified. For further details, see my post for that date. On 8-14-2012, I was contacted by the owner of the company, who told me she had seen my review on Angie's list and wanted to apologize for the scheduling mixup. She also indicated that she wanted to try to make things right in the matter and when I told her the only way to make things right was to install the equipment today (8-15-2012) she stated she would handle the matter and call me within 40 minutes. Ms. Anderson did call back within that time frame and indicated that she had arranged for the installation date I needed. Today, a crew arrived with the equipment at the agreed upon time and commenced with the installation. They were efficient, professional and knowledgeable about what they were doing. The whole thing took a little over 3 hours, which is in the ballpark of what I had been told by the initial salesperson. Once things were resolved by Ms. Anderson everything went as it should have in the first place. I went through Costco initially to set things up and at the time I wrote my initial Angie's List review, I also called them (Costco) and gave the representative there an earful, as well. I will use Anderson again, if needed, however I will make doubly sure that any and all appointment details are set in stone when I do.
Description of Work: I contracted with this company through Costco to install an air conditioner compressor at my condo. The agreed upon date and time was Monday, August 13, 2012 between 8 and 9 AM. At the appointed time and date, the company was a no show and after 1/2 hour I called to get a status update and was told that I was scheduled for the following day. I was eventually contacted by the representative from Anderson, whom I had dealt with and was told that there was, in fact, a scheduling mistake and that the soonest they could have a crew and equipment there was the following day. To make matters worse, The HOA in my complex removed a rose bush at my request to make room for the compressor, so I now have to explain why the equipment is not installed. As I have a full schedule myself for the rest of August, including the following morning, I cancelled the contract and am now searching Angie's List for another contractor to do the work, which will now have to be put off till the end of the month. Although the ratings on this company are generally favorable, I would caution anyone using them to make sure the time and dates are completely set before signing any paperwork. This company has been in business here for many years and one would think, especially after getting the Costco contract, that the right hand and left hand would be communicating; alas, that is not to be in my experience with them. UPDATED AUGUST 15, 2012: Installation of Air Conditioning compressor.

Bernard took great care in his work, didn't leave a mess and explained everything to me.
Description of Work: I had Anderson out to snake a bathroom sink drain as well as a tub. Bernard snaked my bathroom sink drain, which my tenants had let clog to the point of standing water. He felt the tub drain did not need snaking but I had him do it anyway. I appreciated that he was so honest, letting me know I didn't need to spend the money. I also had questions about my water heater, and ended up having Bernard drain and flush it. Rather than have me pay for all of the services separately he suggested a service package which was more cost effective and now I have a plan that covers the property for an entire year, free of service call charges. He also pointed out a problem with the kitchen drain - he noted we have a poor angle on the sink drain and explained what could go wrong.

They were good about responding, it took several months to set up an appointment for this because it had to be over 70 degrees. The individual came and took a look around, I think he spent more time telling me what was wrong with it rather than trying to maintain it. There was no strong arming or pressure sales, he just really let me know that it was a fairly old unit and that I should think about getting it replaced. I wasn't exactly happy with what he told me but you can't "shoot the messenger", there was a follow up call, so that was appreciated.
