UPDATE 9/12/2018 Steve Moore never gave me a call and I have never spoke with him. This company tries to upsell you and/or will not give you too much time if you're an educated consumer.
Description of Work: Estimate for HVAC replacement. Had this company out in 2015, estimator Kevin, to bid on HVAC replacement. At that time, a Manual J load calc was performed at his offices, but I was not as educated on HVAC at that time as I am now. Held off on any work done d/t family, budget priorities, and wanting/needing more time to research. 2016 met a neighbor who had used Moore for a system replacement. She highly recommended the estimator Vince. Also, our mutual neighbor had actually grown up and lived next to Steve Moore. So, I thought I'd listen to her. Fast fwd to 2018 as nothing had been done between that time as no intention yet to replace. April 2018 began to think that insulating attic from R-16 to R-44 would greatly help reduce my energy usage. Just intended to insulate, but learned of Energy Upgrade Program BayRen for the Bay Area. It's required to do at least 3 energy efficiency measures on that program for a rebate. Decided I'd replace my AC and furnace as well. Began my journey of researching/learning about HVAC. Called out Moore for estimate from Vince. Vince came in early 5/2018 and estimated. After we made small talk, one of his first comments or responses when it had been mentioned I had Kevin out in 2015 was "Well, you've had a long enough time to decide on something." I thought that was insulting and rude as he doesn't know each family's reasons for doing things, nor should that even have to be explained. Walked house, no Manual J calculations were ascertained (window measurements, exact room sizing, exact amount of insulation in attic, whether walls were insulated or not, exact sizing of each vent register). Stated I'm not like the "other guys [referring to his Moore's sales men], I'm not pushy." Made a comment while we were in the laundry room, as the furnace/equipment closet is in there, "I could see your wheels are turning. You're trying to understand this." He had made that comment when explaining and describing furnaces, single vs. two-stage, BTUs, etc. I stated, "Yes, that's my nature. I like to understand things and how they work." Fast fwd, received estimate early May 2018. Reviewed estimate later in month when had time. BTW, we are dual working parents of 5 year old twins, so it gets rather busy, and they consume all our time. But I'll not diverge from the topic. After reviewing estimate, sent him email asking for questions, telling him what I'd like. One of those comments had been that I'd like to see the actual Manual J load calculation as I didn't want my system oversized. Remember, he already had stated "I see you are trying to understand this." I'll diverge... Jeez, do most of his customers sign on the dotted line? Perhaps that's the case as I live the Tri-Valley of East Bay San Francisco and there is a lot of IT $ out here. Also, in my email, I made a comment that I called the Livermore building dept. to find out the exact code for any mandatory spacing that an AC unit from a house wall or perimeter fencing. I did that b/c he stated that my AC condenser must be at least 6" from the house and that it must be a certain minimum clearance from the fencing or the City will not approve it. He stated that it may not pass City Inspection if left on the current side and was really intent on pushing that it needed to be moved and would be better if it was moved to the exact opposite side of my house. He stated "It's fine and will work as we'll have to run electrical anyway. It won't be too much more $" Backing up to the appt., I had already told him I really did not want to move it. So, when I had called the City and he informed me of no exact minimums, I went and personally measured my spacing on the side with my AC condenser. I allotted 6" just for clearance from wall as that would make sense so that the unit could be installed or worked on, but even with that 6" and a standard dimension AC condenser, it would fit on that side fine. I told that to Vince in the email and asked some more questions. Response email was he was going out of town and will respond when able. I sent an email later asking that I want to visually see the Manual J, and I want to see the Manual D if they are recommending duct replacement, for which he told me they sub-contract out. That is interesting that they recommend it but they sub-contract it out, for which they probably take a profit from. Got a response email basically saying that it is not a good fit and they decline to work with me. Fast fwd to recently, reached out to Kevin to see if he was interested. In our call, he stated he would if he could, but Steve Moore stated that he (Steve) had personally spoke with me and had told me he (Steve) won't work with me. I told Kevin that I have never spoken with Steve once. I apologized that I even had a second estimate from Vince and told Kevin that that was the biggest mistake right there. I eluded to some of my experience with Vince and stated that I had wished I had originally called him back up in 5/2018 instead of the appt. with Vince. I then called Moore Mechanical and left a voicemail for Steve Moore. In my message I informed him who I was and that I had never spoken to him. I asked him to call me back to explain why they decline my business. To date, have never received a call, email, or voicemail. Take away from this is that while Vince and Moore is punctual for the appts, Vince at least is not a stand-up guy. He lacks integrity, is rude/insulting, and rather arrogant. Kevin on the other hand is well-informed, very knowledgeable, and versed in his trade. Well Steve, I don't know b/c I have never spoken with him. All I can say about him is that he too lacks integrity if he can't return calls and explain situations. I forewarn you the customer, if you at all are educated about HVAC, research oriented such as myself, are and attempt to be an informed/educated consumer, don't call Moore. I believe they prey on the people that will sign the contract quick, don't ask many questions, and just intend to move on to the next client. They are many other highly competent, skilled, NATE certified, BPI certified, HVAC installers that offer the same if not better services. Please move on to the next HVAC contractor.
