I networked and secured several estimates before, I got in. I don't think he was the cheapest but he was the easiest to deal with. He was pleasant to talk to and willing to go the extra mile. He was not unreasonable but I recall, he wasn't the first cheapest. I wasn’t there for the instillation. In fact, I have recommended him to a couple of other people.

"Mr. PIN" (Richard) has a solid reputation in this town and surrounding areas. When I looked at roofing products at our local roofing supply places, they both recommended PIN roofing-- one guy recommended them emphatically! They had done a roof leak repair job for me several years earlier and I see them all over town, so I was as convinced as I needed to be about PIN. I met with him and we agreed to have him do the job. He is very very nice, authoritative and easy to talk to--- very customer service oriented and we had some personal interests in common. He gave me a sense of confidence and I felt I was in good hands-- almost as if a relaible good friend was going to do the job. He also offered to install some roll roofing on a potrtion of my patio cover to increase it's longevity and make it more leak proof. His backlog was a number of weeks, but I wasn't in any big hurry-- except to have it done befoere the next rainy season. Besides, I wanted to have time to have some new tounge&groove roof boards for the exposed eaves as well as some custom milled fascia board fabricated, delivered, painted and ready for them to use. I also had some larger wood sections delivered so they could address the "sagging roof". And we discussed the need for new rafter vents. Part of our agreement was his contract. It's a standard document, really, and he filled the "job description" portion with most of what we discussed and standard installation language. This is important because he did everything in the contract, even down to the pressure washer job he offered to do, but he did none of the other things we discussed. The sagging roof was NOT fixed and the roll roofing on the patio WAS NOT done, and I have to find a creative way to get new rafter vents installed on my own. Very little of my new facia was used even though there were some clear spots where it should have been. And silly me-- I violated my own rule of paying before the job was done because of his personna and assurances. Part of our discussions were regarding his Christian faith and, to me, that made him all the more trustworthy when he assured me that he'd come back and do the work. We even had a discussion about how he was stiffed by a local tradesperson after that tradesperson had agreed to do some work for him. Never thought he would turn around and do that to me. Didn't see it coming. Of the work that was done-- most of it was just fiine. We picked out an Owens Corning shingle and they did a good enough job. The workers that were here were very nice and respectful. The solartube install required that they come in the house and that process was done to our liking... And I would recommend one to anyone with lighting concerns, by the way. Their electrician installed our hybrid attic fan and relocated a light fixture for us too (additional charge, of course). They had to remove numerous TG eave boards that were rotted. That part should've been fine-- I had the material delivered and painted for them, ready to go. Unfoutunately some of their installation was poorly done. There are large gaps where the boards should meet; due to poorly cut miters. There was a lot of paint chipping during their demolition process, so I'll need to have the eaves repainted overall anyway. And I'll need a lot of painters caulk to mask their large gaps. And for whatever reason, in some spots they used the long nails that I can now see through the exposed eaves. Too bad- I have a few boxes of short nails that would've been glad to give them. Some spots needed new rafter vents, but that wasn't written in the contract The tearoff was interesting. PIN subs that out to another crew. There was an army of men on my roof for a few hours tearing off the old shingles and rock/tar layer underneath. They were as "clean" as they could be, but that's messy work and you can't avoid it. I spent a few hours in the attic with a vacuum and spent a couple more hours in the yard picking up old roofing nails that they missed. And the waterheater closet was a mess too. PIN requires a payment after the tearoff and then at final completion At the end of the day, it's most important that the roof does not leak. We've had a few rainstorms since the install, and, as near as I can tell, there are no leaks. I paid a premium for a hand-picked roofer that, quite frankly, didn't perform to my hopes. But at least they left me with a watertight roof. Moral of the story -- with ANY tradeperson-- get it all in writing and don't make the final payment until you've had a chance to thoroughly inspect their work. To be sure, I'd hire him again-- but I would keep a better eye on the process, progress, make them fix shoddy work and make them perform to the contract.
