+ -1 morePlease see above for how it went. The more people we talk to, the more horror stories we hear about Jim/University Landscaping.
Description of Work: Jim, owner of University Landscaping, promised us that everything would go well and that we would be thrilled with the results. He stated that we did not need a landscaping plan and that we could just tell him what we wanted and he would make sure it got done right. Jim told us that he had the skills to do what we wanted (irrigation, new fence, brick patio and a shade covering). He was wrong. The fence was not built to code and is about to fall over. The brick patio had to be ripped out because it was not level and wasn't installed per code. The irrigation had to be re-done as well because it was not installed correctly either. We brought our concerns to Jim's attention and gave him a couple chances to make right. He couldn't and things kept getting worse. Unfortunately, we prepaid and he refused to reimburse us. Jim became increasingly difficult to deal with, he was hostile, threatening and very unprofessional. We consulted the State License Board who found his work to be substandard, but unfortunately they weren't able to help us recover our money. We were left with no choice but to seek professional legal help to get our money back. Jim threatened during arbitration that if he lost, he would declare bankruptcy. We won arbitration and Jim was ordered to reimburse us for his faulty and substandard work. Jim, as he had promised, promptly declared bankruptcy.

+ 1 moreThe work began as scheduled, the crew was punctual and worked hard. They appeared to do a good job initially. Difficulties started to appear when I asked for the promised landscape design. Jim Styers brought me his "Western Garden" book and told me to select the plants I wanted him to plant. After several futile attempts to schedule a meeting with Mrs. Styers, she finally showed up and promised to go to a nursery and select appropriate plants. When I went to the nursery to pick up the plants, I was informed that Mrs. Styers had not selected any plants for the project but left it up to the nursery owners and me to make the design and plant selection. In the end, Jim Styers only planted half of the necessary plants. Since completion of the project last year, many of the new plants died and some old ones that had presumably been removed, grew again. In addition to performing unsatisfactory work, this contractor and his wife treated me with unprecedented rudeness and disrespect.
Description of Work: I hired this company to improve an existing front and backyard, including: change part of the sprinkler system to drip irrigation, re-design the yard to a more pleasing appearance and ease of maintenance, remove some plants and plant new ones, prepare the soil and correct drainage problems before planting, aerate the lawn and cover a small area in the front with bark. The company provided a written contract which included the above specifications except re-design of the landscape. The owner, Jim Styers, assured me verbally that his wife would provide the design and purchase the plants which he and his crew would then plant.
