The engineer, Mark Pemberton, arrived on time, spent 5-10 minutes max in the attic, came down said he would email the plans and collected 700 dollars. He sent the initial plans as agreed. However when the contractor received and reviewed them they said his plan was generic and did not match my situation and would not work. The contractor contacted the engineer and the engineer gave him a verbal approval/correction. When pushed to send corrections in a revised architectural plan he told the contractor "if there is a problem just have the inspector call me". I - as the paying client - called him and insisted he provide accurate plans that matched the permit and included corrections. Begrudgingly, he revised and resent the document. The contractor found that his plan was complete "overkill" - costing me $3200 when it could have been a simple fix costing well under $1000. The county inspector met with the contractor to inspect the finished work - he agreed and was surprised by the excessive work that was required by the engineering plan. The engineer told the contractor that he has done about 10 of these a year and sent a generic (perhaps cookie cutter) repair architectural plan. It did not match my situation so it was not drawn specifically with my situation in mind. This engineer drove up in his bright red corvette with his young tall blonde assistant who took notes ... He spent 5-10 minutes looking at the job, collected $700 and provided inaccurate and inappropriate plans to correct it. His priorities were clear ... and it wasn't conscientious service. When both the contractor who will benefit from a more elaborate repair and a tough county home inspector scratch their heads trying to understand the excessive, unnecessary work that is provided in an engineering plan - I think it's fair to question the validity of it. I would NEVER recommend this guy. He's clearly in it for the money without regard for the impact to clients. Signed, Displeased client (Still burns me)
Description of Work: Assessed a previous installation of a whole house fan in which the installing contractor - 9 years prior - cut into 2 trusses in the attic. The placement of the whole house fan was In a hallway between two walls. It was secure and a simple reinforcement to the trusses was sufficient per my contractor who was correcting the work and the county inspector who subsequently inspected the excessive corrective work.
