Mace Tile

Jay Mace and his sub contractors did excellent work. We interviewed 4 other contractors and 2 designers before hiring Jay. He previously had remodeled our three bathrooms (also with excellent workmanship and results), but it was over 10 years prior and we did not think of him to do our kitchen until we got fed up with the others and their evasive quotes and lack of detail. Jay's quote was detailed and there were no surprises. He included provisions for contingencies others left out, and continually guided us to suppliers for fixtures and hardware who could save us money beyond what we had found. The remodel was extensive -- changing three ceiling heights, removing a wall and widening doorways, new lighting and electrical, custom cabinets, a fireplace remodel, granite counter tops and new tile floors throughout. His subs were excellent. Importantly, Jay was on the site almost everyday to make sure items were properly scheduled and inspections were not delayed. He and his sons do the majority of work involving the tear out, framing, rough installation, painting, appliance install and, of course, tile. His workmanship is excellent -- the grout lines in the tile are well laid out with a knowledge of sight lines and balance -- and he continually checks to make sure he is creating the room you have designed and want. He also is wonderful to bounce ideas off and lends creative suggestions. Based upon this and our past experience, I know he is not a contractor who overbooks and then pushes a project aside for newer work, as so many others do. He is pleasant and everyday leaves the job clean and tidy, sweeping and vacuuming all dust and debris. It is hard enough to live through a 2 month kitchen remodel, but he made it as pleasant as possible.

It was the best experience with a contractor I have ever had. Jay Mace was able to give me advice on the tile to pick for quality, looks and price, personally took me to the yard and helped me pick the granite. I selected my tile and he ordered it and picked it up. He was careful to tell me every step of the way exactly when he or workers would be coming and what they would be working on. He communicated carefully and clearly about any choices to be made. The workers were neat, quie, polite, and conscientious. Always. The bathroom looks wonderful, and Jay went the extra mile and helped me with a problem I was having with the marble in an older bathroom, as well as sharing his expert knowledge about the different plumbing fixtures that i would be needing. He never tried to sell me anything extra or run up the price in any way. The work began promptly after signing and moved right along step by step. It doesn't get better than this. His was not the lowest bid that we received but the price was fair in my opinion. Jay's ability to work with us was obvious from the start, and having reliable, trustworthy, highly skilled people makes it worth it. I asked Jay for references before hiring him, and one of them turned out to be an interior designer I was familiar with. She told me he is the best in Claremont, and I probably didn't need to put a report such as this on the web because he would have plenty of work anyway.
