It was a very stressful experience, but overall the finished look is very attractive and gave us a fresh, updated look. The quality of cabinets suggested to us were from L&U Kitchen and Bath in Sacramento, look nice in their outward design and expresso brown color, but their quality is very disappointing. We bought the more expensive cabinets with the dovetail joints and self-closing drawers, but they brought us much grief in regards to inconsistent color, some of the cabinet doors and drawers not closing properly and wood cracks in the drawers. The owner tried to be accommodating in replacing the doors and trim that were not acceptable to us as new quality, some due to the quality of the cabinetry and some due to their workmanship. We were told that there was not a warranty on the cabinets, but he would take care of adjusting the doors and drawers for several months if anything wasn't working correctly. After we paid him in full, every penny that he asked for, to the sum of about $3000 more than the estimate, we noticed cracks in the sides of eight of the drawers where the rollers were attached. He did not want to take responsibility for cabinets that he said we picked out, that he purchased and supposedly inspected and delivered to our house and installed. His offered a poor, inconvenient compromise in replacing the drawers, so we decided it was not worth dealing with him further and risking more problems occurring with these cabinets, which outwardly looked nice. We also picked our pre-fab granite from L&U. We had our bathrooms done with pre-fab granite, which was a pleasurable and pleasing experience. The owner of BGM Construction told us in the interviewing of contactors that he specialized in the granite and would be doing the granite work, though others would be working with him on the electrical, plumbing, etc. My wife was impressed with that and wanted him to do the granite countertops, even if we chose another contractor for other work, even though we did not. The owner showed us a granite sample and we loved it, but when going to pick out our granite pieces, we found that there were only three slabs to choose from for the island and they were not acceptable. We chose a different design with his help, which we like very much. We were told that it would cost and additional $250 which we agreed to, but he charged us $350. The look of the granite in the kitchen is beautiful, and the workmanship done by another contractor around the Blanco Silgranite sink is excellent. I guestioned why the edges were so rough and you could see the joining line of the bullnosing. He told us that we picked the granite and it would cost another $350 for the granite contractor to come out and smooth and polish the rough edges. He told us that he was going to do our granite when we interviewed him?? It was and is a sore subject with me, but I let it go. It bothers me when I compare the smooth, polished bathroom pre-fab granite countertops bullnosing to the cosmetically pleasing kitchen granite with rough, unsightly edges. Adding to the frustration of having to rush and select a new granite for the kitchen, we had to choose a new backsplash and sizzle strip to match. This met resistance and frustration from our contractor, but with good counsel we chose a more pleasing combination, which looks great! We were told on three occasions that we were expecting a $100K, which was insulting and hurtful. We work hard for our money and have sacrificed for a long time to finally decide to do the kitchen remodel, which started with painting the cabinets, new granite countertops and new appliances. We did not expect a $100K kitchen, but an appealing, functional, new kitchen, with quality materials and workmanship, a contractor of integrity and attention to details, This is not a house to be flipped, where things are patched and compromised and materials of marginal quality are acceptable. The internet shows how various kitchen projects are done and we used that along with counsel from other contractors and friends to support our concerns over their workmanship. We learned a lot from this kitchen remodel. We spent thousands of dollars more than anticipated and much stress and tears came from pleading our cause. We don't want to be totally negative, because we are pleased with what he and his crew gave us design-wise and appearance-wise, though it still brings up bad feelings because we settled when it came to wanting our home back or insisting that certain things be taken care of. We have received many compliments on our new kitchen which we are proud of and are thankful for, We have painted the walls and ceiling and put in new baseboards. The house is still transitioning, beautifully, but slowly.
