System 1 Acoustic Ceiling Removal

I am informed about the benefits and challenges of lath and plaster ceilings and walls. Richard gave a great presentation on the full-services that his company provides. His team removed my popcorn ceiling, patched ugly lath and plaster cracks, applied a light cloud texture, and followed up by painting (a week later, at my request) using Dunn Edwards Swiss Coffee with a flat finish. His employees arrived on time, as scheduled. The results were amazing. I am so pleased.

System 1 came out to give us an estimate on acoustic ceiling removal. However, they would not honor the Angie's List 10% off ceiling package coupon for "ceiling packages" The reason given was that the work is all labor. They offered 100$ off 1450 in painting costs (not 10%). The total work was ~32 hours (2 workers for 2 days). It was not explained clearly to us how the labor costs reached almost 5000$ for such a small amount of work. Given the age of the home, we were a surprised that there was no discussion about asbestos. When we inquired, System 1 represented plaster ceilings usually did not have asbestos. Since our own research seemed to point towards a good chance of asbestos in plaster ceilings, we ended up sending a sample to an independent third party lab, just in case. I would recommend testing before starting ceiling work. That being said, the work quality was acceptable. However, we did not feel that the price was justified based on the scope of the work.

We had original plaster popcorn ceilings that were a real pain to scrape and still needed ceiling re-texturing afterwards. We received several bids and Richard's was in the middle. He was definitely the most knowledgeable about the plaster and the best way to fix everything. It took 2 1/2 days for his crew to finish all of the ceilings in our house. They scraped and textured. The house looks so much better! He returned this week to do the kitchen (we are remodeling and it wasn't ready to do the first time) and to skim the walls in the dining room. They will return later this week to paint all the ceilings. His crew is very professional and shows up exactly when they say they will. Richard was willing to work with us to schedule around our kitchen remodel, which was awesome. Very happy with the work we've had done.

System One was professional and friendly. They covered everything (including the hallways where they were walking from outside to inside). They cleaned up after themselves as well.

The job was done in two stages with removal completed first. I asked that the work crew be present early, as I commute to work. They were present with sleeves rolled up and ready to start at 6:30 a.m. It was necessary to move furnishings and boxes, which was done by the crew. They completed the first phase and secured my place in my absence. I was delighted with the quality of work on the first phase and very excited to see the end results. I must add that a stair ornament was bumped in the process. The owner was quick to notify me and took immediate responsibility for it. We basically repeated the same process on paint day, with an early arrival by the crew. The paint crew started at 7 a.m. and completed the job around 2:00p.m. The quality of the work is excellent. I can readily distinguish between the work previously completed and System 1. It looks finished and professionally done. My research and interviews of companies revealed some lower prices. I chose System 1 for multiple reasons. They are an Angie's List member, with great reviews and the fact that they accept credit cards gave me an extra layer of protection as a consumer. I have already recommended 2 friends to System 1.

Richard from System 1 came and gave a quote, informed me that with the plaster ceiling they can't scrape off popcorn ceiling but that they could "shave" off some of it then smooth out the ceiling. Richard gave me an itemized quote for the work including painting. After signing with them, i saw a 10% off on Angies list for them. Richard said no problem and took 10% his quote. Service was great, workers were on time and prompt. Textured over popcorn ceiling which looked great even before painting, could not even tell that there was once popcorn on ceilings. They did entire condo which has vaulted ceilings. Painting took a couple of days, and made the ceilings looked even better. Really brightened up the condo as opposed to the ugly popcorn ceiling which was there for decades before. One word of caution: after the work was completed, the re-texturing of the ceiling left fumes that need to be aired out for a few days (could be paint fumes as well but did not smell like paint fumes). But no issues now. Would definately recommend and use again. Thank you Richard!

From the outset I was impressed with the crew and their attention to detail. The texturing was fantastic and looks like a new home. We also had them paint two of our light fixtures which they did very well. As with any work with any provider there can be some communication. In this case we had a minor misunderstanding about some of the final touch up work. The owner listened and we were able to work out a solution that worked out well for both of us. In the event I need more painting done at our home I will absolutely use these guys again. They treated my home like it was theirs. Very happy customer. Fair price - good work. Period.

When Richard came here, he was very professional, kind, informative and he just had very good credentials in representing about what his company had to offer. The work was good. I assume you have some difficulties with plaster but both of the ceilings ended up really well. Most of it was good. The head contractor that came in to do the ceilings was extremely rude. The other workers were very nice. Richard, the owner of the company was very nice, it was just that one guy that was really, really rude.

Richard MicKinnon came to my house for an estimate soon after I requested he take a look at my mother's old house near Downtown LA. He was very experienced in his accessment and gave me a written estimate on company stationery. He was nice enough to call me on his cell phone that he would be delayed which I thought was highly thoughtful and considerate. He was honest about telling me the soonest he could do the job was 3 weeks. I had other estimates from other people but Richard seemed very professional and worth waiting for. The day we scheduled the work, his worker, Reyes showed up about 6:45a.m. 15 minutes before the scheduled time. He waited patiently in his truck gulping down breakfast and waited until I came out to let him know I was ready for him to start work. He was polite and hard working and rarely took a break. Demolition is physically demanding and he and his worker toiled for hours in the summer indoor heat until all the old plaster and lath was torn out, cleaned and swept up and taken outside. After the ceiling was torn out, they could see one of the joists needed repair and called their boss. They agreed to buy lumber and reinforce those supports and showed me all along what their intentions were. They insulated the walls with R13, brought in panels of dry wall, cut them to size, taped the seams and applied a smooth coat of plaster over them. All the entry ways to the living and kitchen were sealed up with plastic so the dust and debris would not enter these rooms. They wore proper masks and rolled out paper on the floor so as not to dirty the floor entry way from the front door enroute to the room they worked on. At the end of the job, Reyes showed me the room to meet my approval asked me if I thought everything was in order, I replied it was and I thanked them. This is a fine company, ethical and well run. Richard, the owner is very personable and genuinely cares about the needs of his customers. I would recommend them to anyone needing dry wall.

We received a few quotes for removal of our popcorn ceiling throughout our new home. System 1's price was competitive and they didn't over commit to do additional work like some of the other companies did. The popcorn removal was quick - they were done in one day. They covered up everything to prevent debris from getting on our stuff, but inevitably there were still some flakes throughout the house - this is unavoidable if you think of the masses of popcorn ceiling shavings they took down. All of the rooms look bigger now. In the kitchen we had a grated lighting area that was ugly and dirty. They re framed this and the electrician that System 1 works with put in LEDs in the kitchen, pendant lights and two ceiling lights in other rooms. We hit some hiccups in the project - for instance the previous owner had run an HVAC vent into the grated lighting area. We didn't want to just cover up the vent and eliminate all heating and A/C to the kitchen, so Richard called an HVAC contractor to come out and take care of moving the vent so that we stayed on time with the project since we had contractors coming in to continue another part of our project the following week. I'm not going to knock System 1 on the grades for the electrician they use, but honestly their electrician is ridiculously expensive and the quality is comparable to an expensive electrician who charges 30% less. I'll rant on all the reasons I didn't like the electrician on their page (if they have one...I don't think they do). In retrospect, I should've contracted my own electrician. Moral of the story: System 1 does good work.

It didn't take long at all. There were about 3 guys in here scraping and got the ceilings done in a few hours and put up the new ceilings so by day two they were done. They had to sit for about a week and they came back to paint. They were able to work with my schedule. The work area was left extremely clean. One of the guys that was working around the crown molding did a very poor job. I took pictures of this and sent it to the owner of the company. He responded right away and had people come out to fix it. I love it, it's absolutely beautiful.

I was very happy about it but the painting was okay. They took a lot of time on painting but he was okay. I was really impressed with the acoustic removal. They did that in one day. I think the price was reasonable. They were on time and they were prompt.

The guys at System 1 were quick to get us an estimate and begin work removing the acoustic ceiling in our house. Took an extra day than initially quoted because they were short staffed but no additional charges were added. I was very satisfied with the work and they did a great job cleaning up. All in all a good experience.

We feel fortunate to have found this company. We were pleased with every aspect of this company from their price all the way through to their clean-up at the end of each day. The quality of their work was excellent. Not only would we use them again but we have recommended them to others.

Wonderful company to do business with! We wholeheartedly endorse the team at System One. We love everything they did, from the removal of our acoustic ceilings (approx 1000 square feet) which were scraped and painted, beautifully, in one day with (amazingly) no mess to the painting of our entire home ( minus kitchen and baths). Richard and System1 was extremely responsive on quoting and scheduling an extremely short notice request. Richard was willing to work out a Saturday schedule for a job that needed to done quickly. Chon arrived on time and carefully masked off the entire area and hallway to access the area. Chon worked quickly and quietly to not disturb surrounding neighbors in the condominium complex. The work is the highest quality and the match is nearly perfect and was completed on time as estimated. I have been working with several contractors lately and my experience with System1 and Chon was excellent. I will definitely be contacting them for future work.

It went exactly as I expected, given their reviews on Angie's list - PERFECTLY. Estimator (Richard) & workers were exactly on time, price was fair, high quality quality work and materials.

A great experience from start to finish. The owner showed up to my house to provide a quote two days after first contact and was on time. He gave a thorough explanation of their process and what to expect. He was honest about possible complications due to the age of my home (1947) and the price was very reasonable. The work crew was scheduled for one week later and they also were prompt. I requested an earlier start time due to my wife's work schedule and they accommodated that request. The finished product turned out great and there were almost no signs of work being done in my home. They were very clean. I would definitely use them again and recommend them to anyone who needs acoustic work done in their home.

Very professional and easy to work with. Came out for a quote and was able to give me a price on the spot. Scheduled work to be done a couple of weeks later. Workers were very professional and very clean. Popcorn removal can be messy, but everything was covered or moved if needed and when the work was done you couldn't even tell someone had been there. Very fast turnaround and very responsive. Would absolutely work with them again in the future if needed.

Because of the nature of my request, the work could be performed over a few weekends with minimal hassle. The removal of the acoustic ceiling went very fast and we were relieved to find that minimal work was needed to smooth out the ceiling. The worker took two days to fully skim and seal our ceiling, as he put down a thick coat and two thin coats of plaster. The painters were scheduled to arrive the following weekend but doe to another job finishing early, they were able to start ours sooner than expected. Wasting no time, the job was completed that day and all of System 1 Acoustic showed a high level of pride in their work. The ceiling turned out better than we had expected and are extremely happy with the work and professionalism shown on the job. We will be using System 1 Acoustic again in the future. I had contacted 4 contractors regarding this job. This company was the only one that insisted on seeing the property before providing a quote. I scheduled an initial consult, but almost cancelled because I had pretty much decided on another contractor. SO GLAD I kept the appointment! Richard arrived within the time frame we agreed on; he called me about 10 min prior to his arrival to let me know he was on his way. He was very nice, very professional, had samples to show me textures and colors. He reviewed the first room I mentioned during the first point of contact (over the telephone), then I showed him the other jobs and asked about feasibility. Richard gave me the best quote by far. Richard included 2 rooms in the price I was quoted for one room by other companies. Richard was upfront and said that the quote for painting may not be as competitive if we had another painter that we used (we don't), but to me it was perfectly reasonable. Richard explained the whole process in detail. I was happy with the quote, and was ready to schedule service. They were able to begin the very next day. Pedro arrived on-time, at 7:40 am the next morning. He was very friendly and very helpful. He completed the entire job by 3 pm (maybe sooner). The place was very clean when he left, and the ceilings were super smooth! We were very happy with the result, and he did a great job cleaning up the poor patch job in the dining room. At the end of the day, I gave Pedro a check for the cost of just the plastering. Brian came by a few days later to paint; also arrived on time at 7:40 am. As expected, Brian was also very friendly and very clean. I'm very happy we decided to have someone complete this step, because the ceilings look great; professional quality and clean lines. We had a difficult time matching the ceiling paint in the dining room. Brian even went out to buy more paint that matched better (no extra cost!). He also replaced the light fixtures. At the end of the day, I gave him a check for the cost of the painting. The point I'm trying to make here is that I paid exactly what I was quoted at the beginning; no surprise costs. Brian even offered to leave the extra ceiling paint with us! I am so, so happy with this company. From the point of initial contact, to project completion, everything went smoothly. Excellent communication, very professional individuals, people taking pride in their work. We will gladly hire them for any job, and I will be the first to recommend them to anyone looking to re-do their ceilings. I wish these guys did more (like fixing appliances) because I would hire them for everything. This experience made me happy that I renewed my Angie's List membership.
