Using state of the art equipment, our highly skilled staff can remove your old popcorn ceilings in a day or less with no mess. We use the highest grade of materials possible, and we offer many textures to choose from. Our estimators bring texture and paint samples to your home, so you can see the quality of the work yourself. In addition, we also specialize in wall texturing, dry wall, and full interior and exterior painting.
Richard contacted me right away. After providing him with photos of the statement of work and explaining the situation via emai, he bid via phone and followed up via email giving me some quick scheduling options within the week. He was in the general price range of other service providers but was not one of the low bidders. His service technician showed up early and waited. He was pleasant and listened to my concerns. His prep work and clean up was thorough. He went well beyond what most contractors do when involving the client and assuring me that they would repair the work back to its original condition. The actual patch and texture was well done. It's ready for painting. System 1 was chosen due to high regard using the following factors: Knowlegable service, reputation, longevity, availability, innovatiive website/communication tools and finally price. I could have gone with a less expensive provider but why?

Richard McKinnon is extremely professional. We had gotten several other estimates before he came out, and his was by far the most detailed and at a fair price for the scope of work. He took the time to answer all our questions and really explained the process. We made several changes from the original estimate, and went from having them remove the acoustic on one floor and doing some painting touch up to having all the acoustic removed throughout the house and the entire interior painted. He was always responsive, understanding and easy to work with. And we are so glad that we did the entire house, it makes it feel like new! There is something to be said for working with companies with generations of experience in a given area. Richard and company know their stuff and they are dedicated to a great outcome for their customers.
Description of Work: First the acoustic removers came bright and early and by the end of the day, all that dirty junk was gone from our ceilings and they were plastered and drying. It looked better already! We hired their electrician, Enrique, (paid a seperate fee) and as the the acoustic was removed he installed lighting cans with dimmers in the kitchen, dining room, living room and entry way. They look great and we are so happy that we did. The painting crew was run by Richard's brother, Brian. They were courteous and professional and easy to work with. We chose our paint colors in advance and they did prep for a couple of days then painted all the rooms in our four bedroom, 2 1/2 bath townhouse. After all was done and we moved in, we noticed a few things we'd be happier fixed and Richard sent Brian and Diego out to do some final touch up. It looks great and we are very happy in our new home.

Although there were reasons to downgrade System One in the other graded categories rated A as well, and I would not describe getting from point A to B with them as going smoothly; the minor issues aside, the end result was more than satisfactory.

We called System 1 Acoustic Ceiling Removal for an estimate to remove our "popcorn" ceilings. Other guys came in and told us it was most definitely asbestos. System 1 was very easy to talk to and answered all our questions. He even took a sample on the spot to assure us it was not asbestos. He got us a quote within 24 hours and it was very competitive. While we will not be smoothing the ceilings at this time because it no longer poses a health threat; and due to budget constraints -- we will definitely be hiring System 1 when we decide to move forward on scraping the ceilings.

Rich came out and went through the house, and explained a lot to me about plaster versus drywall, and what they could do. His company also does painting, but he quotes it separately and makes it clear that it isn't a problem if you've got another painter to use. Ultimately, I went with them for both. About 1700 sf of ceiling in the house had the dreaded acoustic ceiling texture. I had this work done before I moved in because I feared never getting around to it, otherwise. It was great to go with a company that specializes in ceilings, because their results are great. Two walls had significant cracks where the house had settled, they were able to replaster them and make them look perfect, also.
Description of Work: I purchased a 1960 home with acoustic-textured ceilings and plaster walls. Before we moved in we had the ceilings smoothed. With plaster, this involves shaving down the bumps and re-plastering over the ceilings. The ceilings and several walls had existing cracks that they repaired, also. We had new ceiling fans placed in the bathrooms while the plasterers were here, and other electrical work, and the patching made the electrician's holes in the ceiling and walls totally disappear!

After reading many different reviews on angieslist I decided to contact SystemOne to come by for a quote. Given my tight deadline for closing escrow and needing to move in (with the holidays and all) I didn't plan on contacting others for a quotation. They came by and did the quote in about 15 minutes. They listened to our questions and gave valuable insight on how we could do some DIY painting to save some extra $$$. The crew came out as planned, start to finish they were done in about half a day. In my opinion the ceilings do not resemble the sample shown (light cloud finish), which was free; we did not have the funds to apply any texturing. With that said, the ceilings are almost ready for paint; just need to do some light sanding and touching up, which was explained to us from the beginning. Some of the interior doors were removed and not replaced. Light fixtures were pulled from the ceiling and left dangling by the wires. Ultimately were are happy with the service provided. The lights left hanging is acceptable to us, since we need to paint there anyhow. From what I have read on angieslist, the price paid was comparable to others. The work was completed in a very timely manner. We will use them in the future if the need arises. We will recommend them to freinds and family who seek such services.

Response from System 1 Acoustic Ceiling Removal
Thank you for your comments . Just a few things I would like to respond to..... The lights cannot be hung because the texture is wet when we leave, and it still needs to be painted. So, the fact that we don't put them back up should not be considered a "negative". If we were contracted to paint the ceiling, we would have put all of your lights up for you. You would have had to take them all down to paint as well, which would have also cost you unnecessary time and energy. The sample of the "light cloud" finish is the same texture as what is on the ceiling. It is done by hand, not a machine, which means it will always have a slight variation. It is an art. We work hard to earn straight A's on every job, and B's are not acceptable to us. Again, thank you for choosing System 1. -Richard McKinnon President

Richard McKinnon showed up with samples and explained the whole process. We picked a date for the removal and plastering and a second date, July 1, for the painting crew. The removal and plastering crew did a good job, though I did find some plaster spatter and drips on walls, window sills and one painting. Nothing major and easily cleaned up, but since they finished the work by 1:00 and were gone, they could have done a better inspection and clean-up. Thought they did a very good job on the plaster and the "light lace" texture. The painting crew came in about a week later after the plaster was fully dry. They did an excellent job painting the ceilings, though there was some damage where paint pulled up with the tape on the wall where it joins the ceiling. I imagine this could be the case, but all in all, not bad. I would hire them again for sure, but I would also do a walk through after the plaster work to make sure the clean up was complete.

Our home is app. 2300 S.F. built in 1987 and had acoustic ceilings throughout the house. They came to give us an estimate just a few days after we called. The very next week work started on the day that was convienient for us. The first crew arrived on time and worked all day. After applying plastic all over for protection and moving the furniture and removing light fixtures they removed the acoustic, re textured the ceiling then removed the plastic and cleaned up before leaving. They left the furniture toward the middle of the room and the light fixtures down, but explained to us that the painting crew would replace all of that. After two days to dry the paint crew came, again on time and put up new plastic for protection. They painted then replaced the light fixtures, put the furniture back and cleaned up and left. The painting was faster then the removal and texture so they were done in about 6-7 hours. Both crews were very friendly, and very good at their job. Our home looks newer and the ceiling look very clean now. What impressed us the most when we compare to others ervice providers that we have had in the past was that they asked for no money up front. After the first crew was done we paid for that service, then when the second crew was done we paid the balance. For people like us who have lost money to dishonest workers this was wonderful for us. Thank You again. . ,

We contacted System 1 after reading reviews about them on Angie's List. Richard promptly responded and we scheduled him to come give us a quote. He was very professional and not at all pushy when he came to give an estimate. They were not the cheapest estimate we received, but they were very competitively priced. We decided to schedule them. We were trying to coordinate having the work done the day after we closed on our house. Our house ended up closing a little late and Richard was able to reschedule his crew to come out a day later than planned. We really appreciated his flexibility. Their crew of three guys, plus their electrician completed the whole job in one day. They were punctual and friendly. When they were done, we conducted a final walkthrough and everything looked great. After they left, we did find a few places where they could have cleaned up better, but overall everything looked pretty good. One thing we did not appreciate was that while using the hose in our front yard, the spicket broke. Instead of telling us, they just shut off the water to the entire house. They did not even mention it in our final walkthrough. We weren't sure what happened until we saw the main shutoff into the house. When we turned it back on, we found that we couldn't turn the front hose off. We don't blame them for the spicket breaking as there were many things breaking with our house, but we did find it unprofessional that they did not tell us that it happened. In addition, they left trash in our front yard bushes which we didn't appreciate. Overall, we would definitely recommend System 1 to others. Richard is very knowledgeable and helpful when making decisions on what you need. The crew did a great on the house. Even though we found the way they left our house a little unprofessional, the job itself looks great. Richard was very professional and flexible with his schedule to help us keep to our schedule even though escrow did not close as expected.
Description of Work: System 1 scraped the popcorn acoustic texture off of approximately 1500 square feet of our ceilings and refinished all the ceilings. We had ripped out recessed flourescent lighting and they repaired those ceilings as well. We have some vaulted ceilings and we also had their electrician (sub-contracted) run some wiring in the vaulted ceilings for some ceiling fans.

Ceilings look like they said they would when it was all done. We went with System One because their base price for the ceiling work was competitive with other service providers. Pricing for electrical work was a bit high and was subcontracted out. However, having System One as the contractor eliminated coordination problem, so everything got done in a timely fashion. Be prepared to explain to the work crew once they arrive the same things you explained to the salesman who generated the quote, because you won?t see him again, and the instructions they are given are sketchy at best. If you have electrical work to be done, be prepared to be there to explain exactly what you want done, where you want fixtures installed, etc. Areas for improvement would be: · Have salesman show up on the first and last day to get things started and inspect work with homeowner. · Draw up plans for electrical work in a more formalized manner, so less explanation is needed on the first day of work. · Workers should vacuum home after plaster work. Despite all the precautions they take, there was a very thin layer of white dust everywhere

Richard came (a long way!) to estimate these services. He was punctual and utterly professional. He provided a firm price on the spot, but exerted no pressure at all for an immediate decision. His price was fair, and I had full confidence that his company would do a good job. However, I also required some services (such as new baseboards and additional repairs) that were outside System 1's charter. From a timing perspective, it was better to let a single general contractor handle the entire job. If I had been in the market strictly for the services that System 1 offered, I would have accepted Richard's bid without question. I found dealing with System 1 to be a real pleasure.

Richard came out for the estimate and was very patient with us in explaining all the options and pricing. System 1 was not the lowest cost provider, but we felt that it would be better to have 1 contractor do the ceilings, lighting and painting, rather than 3 different contractors. The drywall/ceiling crew was great. Very fast, and helped do some minor patching around the house while they were here. The lighting/electrician person is a sub-contractor of System 1. Because of that, his price for recessed lighting was a little higher per can than other contractors. It was nice to have the electrician working with the ceiling crew so that they could patch his work. Finally, the paint crew, led by Bryan, also did a good job. We changed the color in some rooms after they started and he and Richard were patient in working with us to accommodate. I also appreciate that they stuck to their pricing pretty well. We did ask for some extra work after the project started, and for the really minor stuff, they didn't charge us, and for the other stuff, the extra charges were reasonable. Also, System 1 was responsive to emails and texts, which was very helpful as our renovation project was moving along quickly and we had to coordinate with other contractors.

This company's sales tactics are a little aggressive, but the price was lower than others. Workers did the job as specified, and management was good about communication before and during the process. However, the end result was not as neat as we had hoped and we had to clean up popcorn bits and splatter on walls/doors. It was a quick job - the basics were taken care of but there was no special attention to detail. For example, the popcorn texture had entered the vents - it would have been nice if those had been cleaned at the same time since the vent guards were already removed. We were not asked and so they were omitted. Also, one light fixture stopped working after being removed and the workers did not test them before leaving, so we found out later. A different employee fixed it at our request on the second day. Overall, we were moderately satisfied but not thrilled so decided to go with another company to paint the ceilings.

I bought a house with ugly popcorn ceilings and hideously ugly paint. Richard gave me a great estimate and pointed out some pretty bad painting mistakes made by the previous owner. I had no idea popcorn ceiling removal created such a mess. They handled it perfectly with enormous amounts of plastic sheeting. They were professional and hard working. The end result was fantastic. It was much more work than I had anticipated but in the end it looked great. I would use this company again.

The sales rep was very professional, very nice - the only one out of the three bidders who brought samples. When he pulled out the samples, I thought, "Oh, wow. This guy's too professional. He's gonna' try to gouge me on price now." But his price was the lowest of the three. His crew showed up promptly and finished the job in record time. Richard provided an estimate and was able to come down a little in the price after we showed him the lowest bid. We went with System 1 because they didn't charge more for a smooth finish (or light cloud). Overall, we are happy with the results. Two guys showed up on time the first day to do a majority of the work. They were here from 8 a.m. til 7 p.m. so it was a long day. The second day only one guy came to finish up the dining room area. They taped everything off, but did throw dirty water in our plants that got on our stone. My one suggestion to the owner is that he should follow up once a job is complete. Since he's not doing the work himself, he should either come by to check on everything or contact the owner to ensure everything went OK. The painter we hired to paint the ceilings after said they should have paid better attention to the edges. He said with a little extra effort the edges could have been better. Instead, the painter used caulk between the ceiling and wall to fill the gap. The ceilings look much nicer and updated the look of our interior.

Once the repaired ceiling was painted, it looked outstanding. There were a few minor problems but nothing out of the ordinary. For example there was slight damage near the wall/ceiling interface at some points due to lifting of paint from the wall, but this is hard to avoid because the walls have to be covered with plastic sheeting prior to scraping the ceilings, and the tape can pull up paint. There were also a couple of spots where the caulking at the interface wasn't perfect, but when I pointed them out they got repaired. These guys are very good. My only complaint would be I found them a tad expensive. I estimated that the total work time that was spent on the ceilings was 12 hours and on the painting about 4-5 hours. Works out to ~$100/hour. I'm quite sure the guys doing the work weren't paid anywhere near that. However, it is only fair to point out that I did get other estimates and System1 was competitive. One other company was a bit cheaper but I was much more impressed by the demeanor of the System1 estimator so I went with them. System1 does good work and they were responsive when I pointed out problems, so I would use them again.
Description of Work: We had two bedrooms, each ~12' x 13', as well as two hallways, each ~3' x 8', that had popcorn ceilings (no asbestos, thankfully). System1 scraped the ceilings and then replastered them to yield a smooth surface and painted them. The total cost came out to $1500. After the first round of plastering, a very thin but visible crack developed down the middle of each ceiling. I called System1 back and they sent the plastering guy back out and he taped the crack and replastered over the tape. System1 told me that this type of cracking is pretty common and based on my prior experience I don't disagree.

We at System 1 appreciate the positive comments, as we try to make our customers 100% satisfied. We just wanted to make it clear that it was $1500 (TOTAL) for plastering 2 bedroom ceilings and a hallway (smooth), and priming and painting the ceilings in those areas as well. This is a very competitive price for our industry. But as you can see we have received an A for quality. Basically we received a C for price, so I wanted to make sure it was understood that $1500 was the combined price for both jobs. Thank You! :)

Overall it was good. I think it was more than they thought. So they had to work on weekends in order to get it done because there was a time limit. My daughter was going out of town. She had to get it done by certain date. They did work in the weekends in order to get it done. They definitely worked hard to meet the needs that we had set. We had a couple of concerns. They missed a couple of spots that I am going to have to do. Also they broke the closet system in the closet. I don’t know how they put it back together but it doesn’t work. I have to replace it. That was the only thing. I would recommend them. The only thing that I would caution is that there should be someone there really watching them and check their work when they are finished. They should make sure that everything was intact and everything was done that needed to be done. It was a good price and it was fair. They were on time everyday.
Description of Work: I used System 1 Acoustic Ceiling Removal about six weeks ago. They refinished the ceilings and painted the interior of the house.
