About us

I am a Landscape Designer and the sole proprietor of Sutherland Design for more than 20+ years, and I have designed many types of landscape projects, both large and small, in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas. My background is in fine art and graphic design. For 13 years I worked installing and maintaining landscapes, as well as designing them. It is my pleasure to bring all of my hands-on knowledge and creative skills to each design project. My Landscape Projects range from Mediterranean, California Natives, Drought Tolerant, Deer Resistant, Nurturing Sanctuaries and more. If you can dream it, I can design it! I have designed conceptual elements such as Fireplaces, pergolas, retaining walls, fences, decks, patios, outdoor kitchens, water features: natural, formal, and sculptural. While designing my client’s outdoor living space, after carefully listening to their needs and desires, I blend their practical needs with the aesthetic beauty. We choreograph rhythmical gardens with textural differences and complimentary colors. A well-designed garden is a food for the eyes; it can evoke a childhood memory or stimulate a more recent impression of a distant landscape once visited. As I live far away, I sent measurements and photos of the areas I wanted landscaped. I spoke with her many times, as she asked questions throughout her research and design process. She also worked with a local nursery extensively, so as to gather information. The nursery loved the design and were excited to see the end results. I have gotten endless praise from my community. I am very pleased with the whole picture of the design and how it ties into where I live. It has a flow of movement with the different plants, their sizes, shapes, and colors. I believe that Laura's expertise and ability to create a detailed design that her customers are pleased with, makes her an extraordinary landscape designer to have work for you. I highly recommend Laura Sutherland!
Description of Work: I knew of Laura's work with drought resistant landscapes and her artist abilities to incorporate the perfect design for what her clients desire. I also wanted deer resistant and fire resistant plants conducive to my planting zone, which is somewhat challenging.

After Laura drew up a fabulous design for us, she put me in touch with a great landscaper she had worked with on prior projects. He was every bit as good as she told me he was. He followed her plan to the letter and she came out to place the hundreds of plants. . . from tiny bits of ground cover of various species to shrubs, grasses and three trees. The plan included a dry river bed and a very sturdy Arizona Flagstone path. We were, and continue to be, thrilled with the result.
Description of Work: I had a large section behind our house where I wanted a flower garden. It was nothing but dirt and knee high weeds when Laura first saw it.

[Member Name Removed] had a vision of a garden her Grandkids can explore and be a part of nature in. We designed in large boulders for them to sit on, winding paths and a dry riverbed for adventure walks many types of perennials and native plants as well. Other then the shade tree we planted, the gazebo off to the side draped in Royal Trumpet Vine will offer another dappled shade environment to view the garden from. It was so much fun working with you and creating your dream garden. Thank you for your business.
