At first, Alan told me that he did not think the set was worth the cost of refinishing it. I really appreciated that as it made me feel that he really knew his business and was trying to give good information, even if meant he would not get the work. Because of the sentimental value of the set, I went ahead and had the work done. The final result was amazing! I was thrilled as was my daughter, who now has the set. It took a long time to complete, though we were slow to provide some information to him, so some of the passing time was on us. We weren't in a hurry for it so it did not matter much. If you have time to wait for a thorough and excellent job, use this company.

It went very well. They were friendly. I was under a time constraint, and they met it. I am very pleased. The only bad thing was that I did have to pay an additional fee to use a credit card, and they didn't tell me until the end. Alan, the owner, is phenomenal. Jen, that answers the phone, was very knowledgeable and sets a good tone for the service.

I decided to refinish and repair our Henredon furniture after we had purchased other brands and they just were not up to Henredon quality of workmanship. I contacted Old Friends Antiques after looking at the ratings on Angie's list. It is quite a distance from our home so I emailed photos of the items and the damage. Alan communicates quickly by email. His price was reasonable and he stated the timeline and was very relaxed about the proceedings. He has resources like transportation and glass that he uses if you request it. The transportation we took care of ourselves. He had the furniture about 3 weeks and they looked well repaired and refinished. He does not do any onsite jobs. I asked him about the glass tops and he ordered them for me. I was able to get someone to retrieve the furniture after he called to say they were ready so the glass tops were sent. They were very professionally prepared and sent, no nicks or scratches. Alan later sent clear pads himself. I am very happy with the workmanship, with the dealings with Alan Beutler, and feel the price was fair to save these pieces.
Description of Work: Refinish the top of two Scene 4 Henredon nightstands, repair and replace chips of wood on the front face of the drawers and refinish knicked edges of the drawers. Refinish top of the 6 drawer Henredon dresser of another series and repair drawer. Old Friends Antiques was chosen from Angie's list and transportation arranged. Transportation cost is extra unless you get a means to take the pieces to the shop. The shop is conveniently open on weekends. The communication from Alan Beutler was quick and professional, absolutely no problems. Their business is quite a ways from our home so I offered to email photos to explain what services I required. I requested glass coverings for the wood. Alan also ordered and had sent the glass tops to protect the nightstand finishes. Later, he also sent the clear pads to cushion between the nightstand and the glass. Receipts were included when the payment was received. Emails were used as records of transactions and communications. The only minor comment is that I did not ask for a high gloss finish on the top so it came back more matte but I was getting it covered with glass anyway.

Description of Work: Allen took an old, inexpensive and scarred corner table and refinished it in ebony as I requested. I brought the table to his shop using a truck belonging to a friend. He had the table for about one week. My only complaint was that I had to bring in and pick up the table. The table looks very much better. He also added height to the legs so that they become the same height as the sofa.

A desk that had belonged to my father had, over the years, become scratched and stained and banged up. it was badly in need of some TLC. The owner came by and gave me an estimate after examining the desk, which he recognized as a mid-century one. He took the desk and brought it back a month later. It looked practically brand-new, with a beautiful cherry finish and hardware that matched the original, which had been damaged. The desk still retained its character, but now it's a showpiece instead a battered old relic. The price seemed quite reasonable for the extent of the work required. I would recommend them for any treasured piece of furniture that you would like to have lovingly refinished.

Amazing. Alan was right on time and provided estimates on his day off. I am very grateful for his money-saving suggestions. Will update re quality once work has been performed.
Description of Work: I interviewed Alan of Old Friends, regarding restoration of a grandfather clock riddled w/ powderpost beetle holes. Alan surprised me in three ways: 1. called me right back on a Monday when the shop is closed, 2. came out that same day (he had a client in my town), 3. suggested, as one of the three options available, that I do nothing! Because I will be selling the clock w/in a few years, Alan suggested doing only the fumigation to address the beetles and leaving the clock for the purchaser to refinish b/c I would not recoup the cost of restoration. He even told me about furniture coloring "pens" that I could use myself to color small areas of bare wood. The second option was for Old Friends to patch the beetle holes and clean up the surface a little (the clock has a nice patina, he said) for $225. Third option would be to strip the clock (which he said would also kill the beetles), involving removal of chime mechanism by a clock man near his shop, and refinish for $400. As I had received refinishing estimates from other restorers of $750 and $680 (incl. hauling), imagine my surprise. Alan said he has been in business 38 years and does not need to drum up work. There are other pieces involved in the discussion, as well as the transport to the fumigation chamber so he gave me the name of a transporter he uses, said he could pick up the pieces at no charge when he is in the area and then would charge $50 to deliver. Alan is very low-key, clearly does not push you to a solution you do not need. I am looking into coordination of the various services and plan to use Alan to do option #2, plus, possibly a couple of other furniture pieces.

Alan picked up the sideboard, and also delivered it. He and his crew are reliable . I did go to his shop to look at other oak pieces he had so I could give him an idea of what color stain I wanted. It looks wonderful.I was not in a rush since I was moving, so I cannot comment on timing. I was satisfied. He is not only professional but easy to work with so I don't think that would be a problem of something not being delivered when expected. I HIGHLY recommend Old Friends. As for pricing I thought it fair considering what it would cost to get a new piece of this quality.

The owner knew the vintage of the desk-around 1920, I believe. It had been handed down from my grandmother and had sufferred a lot of wear and tear including termite damage on the legs, water stains and model paint drips from when my brother painted model airplanes on it.as a kid. Some of the gingerbread scrollwork was missing. I received a quote of $400 and a time estimate of 4-6weeks. It was ready 5 weeks later and was beautiful. They removed some of the gingerbread design from one side to make it symmetric and you can't even tell anything is missing. The legs were repaired, the wrought iron between the legs was shellacked and the finish is beautiful. We're very pleased. I would have had this done years ago if I had known it was this easy and would turn out so well..

Work includeded repairing lifting veneer and damage to tops from nail polish remover and water rings. In addition, Alan was able to replicate and relace some missing carving from the mirror frame perfectly--you can't tell that the piece was repaired. The price includes pick up and delivery.

I was a very pleasurable experience from start to finish. It's seem so difficult to find true quality workmanship, but I found just that within Angie's List with Alan.
Description of Work: Refinished an 1950's Highboy that was of good quality wood, but very poor shape. His work was beautiful.... better than I'd hoped for. Alan was punctual and re-delivered the pieces when he said he would I'm looking forward to having him rehab my Stickley rocker, re-upholster and refinish my 1930's desk chair as well as my dining room table that seats 20. He upon his return to deliver my completed piece, he even made a small repair to my 18th Century Armoire... without charging me. Frankly, I was surprised he remembered that I'd briefly mentioned it 2 weeks prior.

I was delighted to discover Old Friends, a lovely antique shop tucked into an aging section of Canoga Park. The owner, Alan, and staff were courteous and helpful. They did a GREAT job of repairing my beloved old chairs. While at the store, I found a small table that I really liked and wound up purchasing that as well. I thought the price was very reasonable.
Description of Work: The seats of 2 bent wood chairs were recaned to match the rest of the set of chairs. In addition, the arm of one chair was sanded and retouched. The cost was $110 per chair and the work took about one week.

After my Dad passed away in late 2006, I inherited a lovely old mahogany dining set (dating back to the 20's or 30's); one with great sentimental value as it was the one I'd grown up with. However, in the 40 plus years it had been in our family, it had taken on nasty signs of bad wear and tear. Grime, smoke and stains had marred the wood on the table and all six chairs, plus the bracing( which secured the table legs) was gone so the poor old table could only stand if placed against the wall! It was such a sad sight-- definitely due for restoration! After some shopping around,I hired a wonderful company called Old Friends Antique Furniture Sales and Restoration which I'd thought I'd found on Angie's list, (but,as I see no listing for them at this time, I'm entering them now.) I called the owner, Alan Beutler, gave him a brief description of what needed to be done and emailed him detailed photos. (I also told him that I'd be doing the reupholstering of the chair seats myself, as that part was fun and easy and would save me some money as well). In impressively short order he had an estimate for me, which I found most reasonable. Plus I had another (old oak farm) table that needed minor repairs which he also agreed to fix. (The total for everything, including pickup and delivery, came to $1840.00.) Alan and his assistant came and picked up all the furniture; leaving me the detached chair seats which I upholstered the following week and took over to the shop. At that point all the furniture had been stripped and a new brace for the table had been constructed and installed.I was blown away with the quality of the work, despite that it all had yet to be stained or varnished! While I was there, Alan had me choose a stain that I liked from some of the gorgeous antiques in his shop. We settled on a warm medium deep tone which would still allow the lovely woodgrain to feature prominently. A week later, I got the call that they were ready to deliver that weekend! I was beyond excited, and as it turned out, for good reason. This dining set has probably never looked this good since it was made--certainly better than when I first set eyes on it as a kid back in '65 when my folks bought it at an unclaimed freight in auction in Hollywood. This dining set now has a while new life-- the ultimate in recycling. I am absolutely thrilled with the results. One of the best and wisest investments I've ever made. Alan and his team are great and expert craftsmen, love what they do and it shows. I would recommend their service to anyone in a heartbeat, and if I had room for any more furniture, I'd buy it there. Alan has some gorgeous pieces...mostly turn of, to mid 20th-century. Great Mission and Craftsman, in particular.
