It went well. My mistake was to not specify that we wanted a dimmer put on. I had mentioned it casually but it wasn't remembered.
Description of Work: We needed outside patio lights installed as well as the switch to turn them on/off installed inside. Dave did a great job with our request and was done in the time estimated for the price quoted.

The most of the electric went out in our master bedroom and bath. I checked the fuse boxes, traced out the wiring, and checked junction boxes. I couldn't find any problem. Eventually, I contacted Alan Electric selected from Angie's list. I had difficulty connecting with him since he was on travel much of the time, and when he was available, I was gone. This went on for a couple of months. He spent a lot of time trying to hunt down the break, eventually just connecting up the dead circuit to another live one that was underloaded. I was going to do the same thing but decided that a more permanent fix was needed. He didn't charge us for the time he spent trying to hunt down the circuit, only the time he spent doing productive work. Outside of the back and forth, I'd use him again because of his price, personality, and thoroughness (important). And he wired up to code, something I wouldn't have done had I done it myself.
Description of Work: Our electric went out in a majority of our master bedroom. He fixed it.

He gave us an estimate but then scheduling took a while (maybe a month?) because he was booked up. We were not in any rush so that was fine, and the work also went fine.

The service person came the same day, helped trace circuits from the fuse box, and didn't charge for any unneeded work. We bought a house out of foreclosure and discovered that the prior owner had run 220 service, but converted to 110 behind the wall. We were able to restore the 220 service and just wire in a new receptical. He was prompt, professional and reasonably priced.

Over a period of weeks we noticed that the overhead lights in our house got flaky, and eventually stopped working. After some preliminary investigation we decided we needed an electrician. Alan Electric got good reviews on Angies List, so we decided to call. We scheduled an appointment. Dave came and checked out the wiring. He soon figured out that the wiring near the circuit box that feeds the overhead lights needed to be repaired. He finished the job in about an hour and charged a very reasonable rate. We've had no problems since with the lights.
Description of Work: Repaired some worn out wiring that caused our overhead lights not to work.

What a great find this guy is! Dave knows his stuff. When we called, it had not been clear what was wrong with the fixture. He assessed the problem carefully and did the work efficiently. We chose to replace both fixtures (they were old), although he said that we could just replace the one that was broken. Then, being a nice guy, he went out to the garage and fixed a problem for my elderly mother (it's her house), which he didn't charge for. He was very pleasant to deal with, and we are relieved to know someone good in the electrical business now. Would recommend and will call him again.
Description of Work: Replacement of two fluorescent light fixtures, which were old. They were part of a custom-built light-and skylight combination, and access to the fixtures was a challenge.

One had to do with our swimming pool cover, and the other was dealing with an AC line socket. He came out on a rainy day and chose to not work on the swimming pool. He did install the AC line socket. He said he would come back another day when it wasn't raining to work on the pool cover, but didn't really seem to be able to handle that problem. I was unhappy that only one of the problems was resolved. He was fairly expensive as well.

Fantastic. Dave is an absolute gem and I'm sorely tempted not to post on here as I want to make sure he's available! His work is impeccable and he always does it in a respectful and professional manner: letting you know what he's doing and why - unusual these days! I have some more electrical work to do in our new house and he'll be my first call.

I am a widowed senior and very electrically challenged! I called Alan Electric (Dave's Company) requesting his service in fixing dimmer switch that operates my kitchen table lights.....5 cylinders in old style track lighting. The switch had been acting erratically off and on and quit working completely a couple of days before I made the call. Alan Electric's Angie list summary indicated a $75/hr rate....which I assumed would be minimum cost for his service call. My kitchen table is a very utilitarian work surface for me. I thought the switch could easily be replaced in an hour and I was willing to pay $75 to have that done to get good lighting back in my kitchen. I called on Wednesday. We scheduled repair work for Thursday. Dave was prompt. He very efficiently replace the switch....in about 10 minutes. Then, knowing that he would charge me for hour of work, he asked if there was anything else I needed looked at or worked on while he was here. I remembered that I had broken contacts in 2 of my fluorescent garage light fixtures while trying to replace the bulbs a month or so ago.(I said I was electrically challenged!) Complicating the repair for me was the access to the fixtures needed to be accomplished using a ladder on a wheelchair ramp(left over remnant of my deceased husband's medical problems). As I now had broken fixtures in addition to burnt out bulbs, I was totally out of my comfort zone both electrically and physically on the particular fixtures involved. And though, my garage wasn't in the dark....as I have 4 fixtures...my lighting was reduced about 25%. Dave took a look at the problem. He thought he had necessary hardware to replace and fix the problem. He did! And the wheel chair ramp did not deter him in the least! He did the repair, put in the replacement bulbs I had on hand, and efficiently finished just shy of an hour total of his time. I appreciated the integrity that he displayed in our business interaction. As he was leaving I told him, he would be at the top of my electrical repairmen listing!
Description of Work: Replaced 25 yr old dimmer switch on wall for lighting over my kitchen table. Repaired fixtures and replaced lights in 2 fluorescent ceiling hung work lights in my garage.

Microwave oven was triggering circuit breaker frequently, especially when kitchen lights were on. Also, the Master BA electrical lights/fan/outlets were unable to turn on, but no circuit breaker. I called Sat morning, he came out Sat afternoon. He spend an hour looking at the 2 problems. Said the 1st would be 3 hrs. Said the 2nd problem - he needed to look at the wiring - that might be an hour. He came back on Thursday to do the work. He ran the new circuit to the breaker - went under the house and then to the breaker which was outside wall of kitchen. 3 hours. The only reason why quality is "B" -- my tenant's father was just in town visiting. He looked at the Master BA and noticed that the GFI was triggered. He pushed reset button and then the electrical came back on. I wonder by on Sat when Dave 1st came by he did not check the GFI reset button first. I feel something so obvious - he should have caught that. The good part is that Dave did not charge me for that -- only for the 3 hours for installing the dedicated circuit. The price is fair at $75/hour. However, there are other electricians out there charging $55/hour. I called Alan electrical b/c he was open on Saturday for house calls. However, if you can wait until weekday, you might try other electricians. He was upfront and honest. I feel he did a good job overall

He is honest, doesn't overcharge, and when we called in the morning he said he could not do the work today, but could come over and look to see what needed to be done, which he did. And then came back the following afternoon.
Description of Work: We had a short in the pool cover to open and close it. He looked at, came up with an alternative plan to be able to manually open and close with an extension. Came back the next day, did the work. He noted a cover to an outside plugs loose, opened it and determined the short was coming from here. This was from a box abandoned and did not know it had wires to the pool cover. He tied these off, plus was able to put the cover back on, although old, and the bill covered his time and parts, and was quite reasonable.

Excellent. Dave was extremely helpful and informative, made several trips to the house, performed the work quickly and professionally, offered lots of advise, and cut the price of the bill when the work was done! He is absolutly the best, and we are looking forward to hiring him again to complete the interior electrical work.

Very good. It took Dave about 4 hours in total to install the fan, light, and outdoor light. He only charged me for 3 hours of work because we had a delay when trying to "balance" the fan. We also had some good conversations and laughs as I was present and helped out a bit along the way.

There was attic access to the ceiling areas for the new ceiling fans and the new light fixture. However, there was not direct access overhead to where the desired locations for the wall switches were. He and I got creative, and found solutions. In several places, there was overhead access to the wall outlet that had been controlled by the wall switch, so the electrical connection to the switch could be made behind these previously-switched outlets. In one case we couldn't do this, so he put a new wall switch in the best place that was accessible (though it was not near the doorway to that room.) He does not do dry-wall work, but with the creative solutions and his care in cutting holes of the smallest size needed for the job, there ended up not being any dry-wall repair needed. I was pleased with the overall results.

I called Dave to ask about installing an electrical outlet in the attic, so that I could put a network switch there and fan out the network connection to the rest of the house. We set up a time for him to come out and look. It turned out to be simple enough that he installed it on the spot, using materials in his truck, and just charged the one-hour rate. I couldn't have been happier.
