I had put in a ground fault interrupt (GFI) outlet for a transformer to low voltage outdoor lights. The circuit breaker also had a GFI because that circuit also controlled the pool light and it is required. Having both GFIs on the circuit caused the breaker to trip. The breaker was an old type that was not readily available. I found a replacement breaker myself on E-bay. I had some problems scheduling him. This was probably because he had a lot of business.
Description of Work: Performed troubleshooting to find problem with breaker tripping on swimming pool light and outdoor lights. Quickly found problem. He replaced the breaker.

When we contacted Alan Electric on May 26th we explained that we had a delivery for a long arm sewing machine scheduled for May 28th, and had realized that we would not have the power to work with the new machine and that it was imperative for us to get the power into the room. David came on the very next day, gave us a working solution, for the delivery on the 28th, then he came back on May 29th, completely reconfigured out electrical system to the work room, and had us fully operational very quickly... He was professional, timely, on budget, courteous, and efficient. He fixed many issues, and was quick to provide us with remedies that didn't cost a dime. Very much appreciate his work ethic. Thank you for the referral.

I found this contractor on Angie's List. I called a couple of times over a couple of days, but no one answered. On the third day, he answered and we discussed my request, which was to replace an attic fan. I gave him both my home and cell phone numbers. He said he would call back the next day to set up an appointment. But I never heard from him.
Description of Work: He never called back to set up an appointment for the work requested.

He has lots of experience and knowledge to do the job right. He tried to minimize the damage on the wall when he needed to run the wires and cables. We were happy about his work.
Description of Work: Dave came over to give us an estimate first. He was very nice and flexible to meet our schedule. He installed a front entrance hanging light (we used to have a light from a side wall) and a video intercom at a gate.

The old lighting in our kitchen died shortly after we moved into our house and we wanted to install a chandelier in our dining room and fix a broken light in the same room. We called Dave, who came the next day for a consultation and estimate of how to fix our lighting problems. We decided on canned lights in the kitchen and Dave recommended someone to patch the box in the ceiling left by the old lighting. He said he could finish the job within 1.5 days. We scheduled the work to be done two weeks later, after Thanksgiving. We bought the lights and switches and Dave bought the canned light housing. Dave arrived as scheduled. When we changed our minds on the size of the canned lights, Dave gladly exchanged the housing at the store and returned right away to begin work. Work was completed as promised and Dave even spent some extra time on our electrical wiring problems. We'll definitely ask Dave to come back and help us with any lighting and electrical projects. Nice guy, great work!
Description of Work: Dave installed six 5" canned lights in our kitchen and a chandelier in the dining room, including all electrical wiring. He also fixed faulty electrical wiring to an existing recessed light.

All of the electricity went off at my home and my circuit breaker wasn't having any effect. I placed messages with a few electrical companies from Angie's List and Dave from Alan Electric was the first to respond. Dave patiently listened to what my issues were, asked thoughtful questions, then actually walked me through step by step procedure to figure out what the actual problem was over the phone. When the lights went back on my wife and daughter actually cheered. I'll make sure to call Dave first for any future electrical issues.

Dave showed up right on time. He proved his worth right away, when he told me I did not need the ceiling braces I had bought, because I thought the junction boxes did not have adequate support for a fan; the boxes were already of the right kind and were attached to wood, which I had not been able to discern for myself. If I had tried to install the fans, I would have wasted a lot of time and some money trying to remove the old junction box. The first installation was the most difficult, because Dave could not find a good way to install the medallion, so I finally told him not to do it, and to go on. The other two installations went easily. He ended up charging me $125/fan, which was the price Lowe's had quoted me, so I thought that was quite fair. I had not asked for any quote beforehand, although he offered to give me one, because from the comments on Angie's List I expected him to treat me fairly.
Description of Work: Dave installed three new ceiling fans of the same make where there had previously been ceiling light fixtures. Two of the fans had one kind of remote controlled switch and one had another kind. I had Dave install ceiling medallions to cover the damage to the ceiling paint that occurred when I loosened the light fixtures to remove them. The third fan was supposed to have a medallion, also, but Dave could not fit it between the remote and the ceiling without using shims on the fan, so he recommended against it.

Overall, it was excellent. His rate ($75/hour) is very reasonable. He was prompt and efficient.
Description of Work: Originally, I wanted to put up three additional recessed lights in the family room (for which he quoted $300). As he started working, we realized that the middle light would be blocked by a joist and he would have to put it up off-center. Instead, I had him put up only two lights for which he reduced the quote to $200 plus about $20 for a dimmer switch. Afterwards, I asked him to fix a wall outlet in the office. He had to replace it, and charged me $80 for that work. Also, he troubleshot another outlet that wasn't working.

Dave found that the previous installer may have not properly tightened the wire nuts but also mentioned that with the vibration, these wires do sometimes come loose on their own. I have used Dave's services before and find him always a pleasure to have around.
Description of Work: Called Dave to help with a ceiling fan that stopped working that a handyman had installed a year earlier. Just based on our phone conversation, Dave had a pretty good guess where the problem was so when he came over, he not only fixed the problem right away but also made sure there were no other issues. Great job and great service.

Our dryer stopped working, and after I had reset all the circuit breakers, one of the breakers wouldn't reset and we were without power in both bathrooms, our hallway, our entryway, and our laundry room. I called Dave and left a message. He got back to me within an hour. I described the problem and we made an appointment for 11:30 the next day. Dave came about 45 minutes late but quickly diagnosed the problem - a dead circuit breaker. He didn't have this type of breaker with him so he ran out to pick one up. He was gone about 25 minutes, and when he returned it only took him 5 minutes to install the new breaker. Labor was $75 (one hour including travel time) plus $20 for the new breaker. Overall a very simple and positive experience.

I am very very happy with the lighting. When I initially called Dave, he called back shortly afterward and made an appointment to look at my ceilings. He initially helped me determine where the lights should be placed and took time to be sure I liked the placement. After he made the first cut into the ceiling, he discovered the soundboard behind the drywall, and he took time to assess the situation. He was careful not to cut out too much of the ceiling before I decided I wanted to proceed with the project since it was becoming more complex with the need to remove the soundboard. After I decided I wanted to proceed, he exchanged the lighting he had purchased for different lighting that he would need to use. He did an excellent job of installing the recessed lighting and he recommended someone to repair the drywall (who ended up recommending a painter), so the entire project worked out very well. I also appreciated that he was able to work around my time schedule.
Description of Work: Dave installed 9 recessed lights in my living room and hallway ceilings, and adjusted the electrical so that one of the switches controlled the recessed lights. This was a complicated installation because after he initially cut into the ceiling drywall, he discovered that there was an additional sound board above the drywall, so he had to remove large sections of drywall, remove pieces of the board, and install new construction lighting instead of using remodeled lighting fixtures. He also installed 2 dimmer switches, one that controlled the recessed lights, and one in another room.

We chose Alan Electric because of the incredible reports. Dave returned our call very quickly and we made an appointment for the next week. He was very prompt. Since he had to "troubleshoot" the problem with the fan he couldn't give us an exact cost but it was about what we expected. His solution for splitting the outlet lines gave us another breaker in our box! We really appreciated his thoroughness and explanations of what he was doing and why. Wonderful! We will be calling him back for future projects.
Description of Work: We needed to find out why our ceiling fan stopped working. Plus, we also needed to have a playroom electrical outlet changed from 240 to 120.

For me, everything seems to be working out fine with him. However, I did refer him to my office building and when the property manager called and asked him for his license and insurance, he could not produce it. As far as I go, I am pleased and have no problems with him. The insurance thing would have been nice to know though.

Everything worked out very good. Although, they couldn t find the problem. He was actually stumped and could not figure it out. I felt bad about it. He checked in the attic and everything. He was very professional and very friendly. He also inspected very thoroughly. He was here for three hours and only charged me for one hour, so that was good. I would highly recommend him and I do not blame him for not being able to find the problem. It was really a weird thing that was going on.
