In his initial communication Evan said to me: "I look forward to work with you and creating your dream garden." I encourage readers to look at the before and after pictures attached--I don't think I wound up the "dream garden" but rather the "nightmare scenario." I am working to correct this at this point. I am willing to discuss the details of my disappointment--phone 805 558 2295. Thanks--Lew
Description of Work: I retained Evan Smith for three phases of work: initial design ($1500), detailed plan ($1500), supervision of hardscape, landscape and planting(10% of costs). I was initially impressed with the design suggestions, although they were too ambitious and had to be scaled back and ultimately failed to take account of critical design features that caused me to have to make corrections to the plans. Evan then preprared detailed drawings and utltimately worked with the actual contractor that I found independently on the execution of the plans. I became less happy with the work as we went on. During the execution phase there were several examples where plants that I specifically valued were excavated under his apparent supervision and not replanted as I had wanted--but instead left to die. Once the plants were in, it became evident that some of the plants were not appropriate for the site and a large percentage of them died. The result, particularly in the front of the house, where I wanted curb appeal, became a "battle zone" (see pictures attached). I am still in the process of cleaning up and correcting the deficinecies in the planing and execution.

Response from Evan Smith Landscape Architect
I worked with the member for close to one year to develop his design and select the materials and plants and give him a budget. Once the design was finished he hired his own workers to install the design. Before I was contacted the work had already begun. They did not kill the original lawn but just ripped it out and it continues to grow back. The member also did not want to spend the extra $1500 to replace the 20+ year old irrigation system. Which once turned on had major problems, broken pipes, very low pressure and hence very poor coverage. I worked with his crew over several months to remedy the problem and finally get the plants some water. I then returned at once or twice a month for several months to make sure the plans were doing well and the irrigation was timed correctly. I did replace several plants which died due to the poor irrigation system. Everything was fine for a while. However no one could anticipate the damage which would be caused by the family of rabbits & deer constantly eating his new planting in his unfenced yard. Nor could any once anticipate the damage from the leaf miner worm on the citrus trees. This is not fatale but only damages the new leafs on young trees. I continued to work with the member to help him and advise him on the watering, rabbit/deer infestation and the leaf miner but he was never satisfied. I even go by all of my past clients landscapes to review the work and maturity and maintenance. I will then contact them to advise them on how the landscape is progressing. I have always been and will continue to be very open and helpful to all my. Please contact me with any questions.

He didn't do any work and he didn't really even give me a quote and I really would recommend him. He didn't seem like he wanted to give me a quote until I gave him a bunch of money. The house is close to the ocean and we find that when people come out and see where we are the price quadruples. He wanted me to give him around $2000 just to give me a plan and then also the quote. He would tell us he recommends us to spend about 10% of what the property is worth. He would tell us to talk to our leasing agent to see how much more money we could get if we put $250,000 into your yard. He was just trying to make a big sale, it was a little weird. He never asked me how much I wanted to spend and demanding money for a quote, I didn't like that.
Description of Work: Evan Smith Landscape Architect came out and looked at the house.

Response from Evan Smith Landscape Architect
The member came in from out of town and asked me to meet her at her rental property. We walked the property and I noticed she hadn't done any maintenance in quite a while. She asked me how much it would be to fix everything and improve her property. I had told her several times that I am not a contractor. I am a LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT and that I can help her draw up plans so she can get bids to have he property improved. Once she had the plans I can help her get quotes for the needed improvements ( drainage, dry rot, overgrown plants and weeds etc...) and the wanted improvements ( koi pond, sun deck, fire pit, new plantings, etc...). Then I could help her prioritize the improvements or help phase them into her budget. She had no Idea of how much she wanted to spend , or could spend, so I told he her to contact her relator and ask about rental rates in the area vs income vs property values. She also expected to have the house remodeled with out building permits. I informed her about the local building codes and how involved it was to make these large additions. I even gave her several references to local and respected contractors who know the area and it's building codes. I gave he a very detailed contract outlining my services, the time line and fees. She never returned any calls nor e-mails. I wish her good luck.

The house was for sale and had been sitting empty for over a year. Finally it was looking so bad we realized we had to do something. We asked around and Evan Smith, a landscape architect, was the first person we met with.We talked about what we wanted and what we could spend. We wanted the property to look very attractive and yet be easily maintained with drought tolerant plants. My husband and I liked Evan and so we didn't talk to anyone else. A few days later he was back with a very detailed plan. We knew exactly how many plants we would need and the equipment necessary for irrigation and what the cost would be.He had pictures of all the plants and they were familiar to us.He was full of such good ideas I wondered why I didn't think of them myself. Evan had great enthusiasm for the property and what he could do with it. Besides all the new things he did, he greatly improved the appearance of the existing plants and fixed a fence and other odds and ends so the place would look it's best. He had a crew of 4 or 5 and they worked for about 3 weeks. Even though the job is finished, Evan continues to come by and check on things. We really enjoyed working with him and are very pleased with the results.
Description of Work: My sister and I inherited our childhood home that sits on over a half acre of land up in a canyon. The irrigation system was in disrepair and the plants had been neglected for the past few years. To get it back in shape, Evan first brought in tree trimmers. All the branches were put through a chipper and the chips were used later as mulch. All the depris and weeds were removed and the soil was beefed up with amendments. Next an automatic irrigation system with 7 zones using newer type water conserving sprinkler heads and nozzles was put in. Also 2 pressure regulators and some more hose bibs were added. Some of the lawn was removed and new flower beds were put in in the back. Next came the planting of over 80 flats and 75 shrubs-the frosting on the cake.
