Very professional, efficient, easy to deal with. Following the completion of the work, there were two subsequent roof leaks which were attended to and repaired immediately, within 24 hours. No hassle. No arguments. Work was done on time and on schedule. I do recommend them.

I am very happy with Modern Roofing. Estimate was right in line with others received. Crew was punctual each morning and job was completed in a timely manner. The few inevitable little problems that come up with a job this size were quickly and satisfactorily resolved. And they did a great job with clean up. I will certainly hire this company again.

Mike the estimator was very helpful and easy to work with. I asked for the estimate several months in advance. He explored various methods that I suggested and gave me good advice about alternatives. Roger, the project manager (do I have that name right), oversaw the work. I believe the job was well done. The outside roof looks great and the inside roof stays cool. There was a scheduling hitch during the work. I asked for the work to be done in my presence, after my arrival in Los Angeles on a certain Thursday. Due I think to confusion in the Modern Roofing office, this request for a specific Thursday (insisted upon on several occasions) became a request for "next Thursday." Tenants informed me one morning that guys were tearing the roof off the addition. Panic! When I reached Roger on his cell, he said he would stop the work immediately and wait for my arrival two weeks later. Never mind, I said, go ahead and finish the roof. When I did arrive in Los Angeles two weeks later, Roger came out for the walk through to explain what was done. Alls well that ends well.
Description of Work: I have a 1930s knotty pine addition to my house with a knotty pine cathedral roof. On a sunny day (like most days in Los Angeles) the roof becomes very hot and the room becomes uncomfortable. I did not want to insulate from the inside because it would spoil the knotty pine interior. I asked Modern Roofing to re-roof the addition, about 250 sq ft, adding 4 inches of polyiso insulation board over the decking and under the asphalt shingles. This required some reworking of the roof where the addition meets the house, wider drip edges and so on, since the roofing is now about 5 inches thick.

Not as well as I would have liked. Before listing the negatives, here are some positive points: On the telephone, Michelle, the office manager, and Alba were always professional. Manuel, apparently the Lead on the garage roof work, was courteous; his crew and he did an excellent job of leaving the work site in good order before they left for the day. Martin, who came to apply a sealant after the "final inspection" of the work done on the house, was at the house only a short time but introduced himself, explained/confirmed what he would be doing, and, afterwards, came to the door to tell me he had completed his work and was leaving. Sergio, who came to the house twice after the job was completed, was a customer service and roofing professional. So, too, was Roger, Modern's project manager. Aspects of my experience which were not good or were less than satisfactory: ? One of the selling points Modern Roofing's salesman/estimator (S/E) made was the tax credit for which one would be eligible by applying the Tropical Roofing Products' #911 coating, Energy Star approved as noted in the Tropical's literature. After final inspection, requests to the S/E and Modern's office for the documentation required to take the credit went unanswered. Later, I learned from the Energy Star website and an IRS agent that roof coatings are not eligible for tax credit. The S/E's information had been incorrect. ? At the time he was preparing the contract, the S/E cautioned that successful application of roof coatings is dependent on the weather. Cold weather would mean slow drying times and a long job completion. (In its literature, Tropical Roofing Products notes the following about its #363 Fibered Asphalt Emulsion, "Dry time is usually 6-24 hours in hot dry weather conditions. In cool, dry conditions drying time will be slower 2-7 days per coat.") On 21 Dec, when the job was started, the weather was dry but cold. At the job site, the S/E indicated to me he expected the job would not be completed until after the New Year holiday, due to the cold weather (and slower drying times) and delays associated with the year-end holidays. I understood that to be the case based on what he had advised me regarding drying times and reiterated at the time the contract was signed. On 21 Dec, a large crew began work on the house roof; a two-man crew worked on the house roof the following day. On the second day, I saw the crew during their lunch break and asked them when they expected the second coat might be applied, but neither seemed to understand my question. At the end of their day's work, they left without saying anything to me. On 29 Dec, I received an invoice for the completed work. I spoke first with Michelle who referred me to the S/E with whom I shared my concern that an additional coat was required to complete the job. He advised me to hold the invoice and he would call me on Monday, 4 Jan, when the project manager Roger would have returned from vacation. At that time, I also pointed out that the tiles near the chimney still required attention. On 4 Jan, the S/E didn't call. On 5 Jan, he arrived at my door with Rick, a representative of Tropical, for the final inspection. On completion of the inspection, I questioned Rick about the #363 product's drying time, he said it would take only hours. He said the job had been done properly and that Modern Roofing's crew had applied the coatings specified in the contract. When asked about the information he had provided me, the S/E apologized. At that point, however, I lacked confidence in the S/E and Modern and was concerned about (1) what was sold me and (2) the manner in which it was applied. ? After I had signed the contract, Roger, the project manager, called to remind me that if bad wood were found, the workers would replace it at additional cost to me. I was aware of this from previous roofing work and the terms pre-printed on Modern's contract form. During the day's work on the 21st, no one from the crews advised me that bad wood had been found; however, replacement wood was added to the final invoice with no notification to me verbally or by contract amendment at the time the work was being done. (While the additional sum was not much, I am unaccustomed both in business and at home to charges being added to a contract amount without, at least, verbal notification.) ? After the contract was signed, Roger was to come to the house to take final measurements and inspect the existing roofs. Appointments for 18 Nov, 23 Nov, and 25 Nov were cancelled and rescheduled. ? During the heavy rains early in February 2010, the new garage roof leaked and a leak appeared in the house where none had been before. On 9 Feb, I called Michelle at Modern's office to report the leaks. The S/E called me the same afternoon and said he would come to the house after noon on the following day. He didn't. On 22 Feb, Roger called to follow-up on my 9 Feb call and arranged for Sergio to come to the house on 24 Feb to check the garage roof and the leak in the house. As mentioned above, Sergio appeared to identify the problem with the garage roof and to mitigate future leaks. He also checked the leak in the house. As it turned out, the new leak was not related to work done by Modern Roofing. I accompanied Sergio onto the roof so he could show me where the problem was and what needed to be done to repair it. Once on the roof, however, we discovered an area of the new coating which was floating--i.e., it was not attached to the roof. Sergio said it would require attention and he would report it to the office. The following day, the S/E called to say he would e-mail me an estimate for repairing the leak, based on Sergio's inspection. On 3 Mar, I spoke with Michelle regarding the repair to the coating and the estimate. She said she would contact the S/E regarding the estimate and added the work on the coating was dependent on the weather. The estimate was received by me on 8 Mar, but no one contacted me about the coating. During the remainder of March and much of April, I was unable to pursue the matter. However, by the end of April, when I had heard nothing from Modern, I sent a letter to the company's owner requesting action on the coating. The company's response was immediate. Michelle called on 3 May to acknowledge receipt of the letter. Roger came the following day to follow-up and inspect the area in question. At that point, the coating seemed intact. Nonetheless, Roger arranged for Sergio to return to the house on 7 May to apply an additional coating to the area. Based on my experience with Modern Roofing, I would not initiate a new project with the company and would recommend the company only with considerable reservation. I was pleased with some aspects of the experience but definitely not with others.

On the garage roof: remove one layer of existing roofing, apply torched down roofing system 28# base sheet, mechanically fastened to wood deck, apply a granule surfaced polyester-reinforced modified bitumen torch applied cap sheet; provide 5-year labor warranty and 10-year material warranty. On one of the tiled portions of the house roof: repair broken tile (two pieces) and reset tile (two pieces) by chimney.

He appeared to be a high pressure salesman, and it took an hour for he and his assistant to finally get to a final price. Also, as I later found out, he failed to see that the back side of the roof had two layers of shingles on it. I would not consider having this comapny do the roof.

I had a leaky roof. Modern Roofing was responsive from the very beginning. They scheduled a quick inspection, provided a smart, comprehensive plan for a new roof, coordinated with me closely and did an excellent job on the roof. They also took excellent care of the property surrounding the roof with complete cleanup after each day on the job. In the middle of the job I woke up at 4:30 in the morning and it was raining. They came over immediately and tarped the roof. I am very happy with the price, quality, responsiveness, job performance and professionalism of this company and recommend them without hesitation.

Pretty good job by these guys. Ron came out a couple of times to go over the work that would be done. we initially thought it was three layers, but then realized it was 4, which added a few hundred dollars to the tear-off estimate. I had an issue with the scheduling at first because we had some rain around that time, but they were able to come in on the day I had asked. They also coordinated with my AC guy to make sure the old unit would be removed from the roof before they would start their work. After the job was over, I went into the arttic to check on the ac unit I had just had installed by another company and saw that there was quite a bit of debris in the attic. They promptly sent someone over to clean it all out the next day. as for the pricing, I had a cheaper estimate from another roofer, and a higher one. I chose Modern because they seemed to be the most professional and their price was not too much higher than the cheapest estimate. the job was over in two days and the roof looks great.

It didn't go that well. Given the glowing reports on this website, and the fact that I have done major renovations on other homes in other states, I was surprised and disappointed with this company. The initial contractor that provides the estimate, Carl, was great. He really seems to know what he is talking about and you get the impression that he represents a team that will be as competent as he is. Unfortunately it went downhill once Carl was not directly involved with the project. It was December and cold out, and they removed all the shingles and placed plastic on the roof to protect it from rain overnight. Somehow they didn't think to not put the plastic over the vent for my heating system. Thankfully, I had a newer furnace that has an automatic safety valve on it that shuts off so toxins don't go back in to the house. I tried to call my jobsite manager, Ron, but his voicemail told me he would be out of town for another week and I should call the office. I called them and left a message, no one called back until the following morning. I slept with an electrical heater on for the night, otherwise I would have had to go to a hotel. They arrived with all the shingles and were hauling them up on to the roof to be installed. They had the delivered the wrong color, good thing I was home and noticed. They then had another delivery with the correct color and installed it. The installers seemed to do a good job and the roof looks really good. We had heavy winter rain after the installation, and so far, no problems. However, between the furnace issue, wrong color delivery, and overall indifference from the staff (aside from Carl) when there is a problem, I cannot recommend them. This should have been a simple installation for a ranch house, instead it was one problem after another. I have had roofs installed elsewhere and it is usually a very direct process-old roof off, new roof on. With this company there was just too much miscommunication and aggravation.

This company exceeded expectations from beginning to end. I am fortunate to have a professional building project manager for a large internation coporation as my tenant. It was he who facilited the roofing project for the house, bringing extremely high standards and a very critical eye to the negotiations and project itself. From the first encounter, it was clear why Modern Roofing has earned the accolades received from so many. They were professional, transparent, and include a level of service that exceeds what is commonly offered by the best of the best. There were so many positives, from the simple arrangement of obtaining the permit, to the ability to perform self-inspection. The quality of the work was excellent, as were the precautions to protect landscapre and property. The crews were efficient and not only took pride in their work, but clearly enjoyed it. We like their air-brushed trucks, their good attitude, and the meticulous clean up job throughout. If Modern Roofing could be contracted for large scale construction, no doubt my friend would engage them.
Description of Work: The house in question was built in the 1920's and had some unusual "upgrades" as the original owner seemed to be affected by dementia later in life. In all there were not only six layers of roof to tear off and replace, but added carpentry projects that went beyond the usual wear and tear of aged plywood. At some point the old guy had carved half-moons for birds to enter the attic- unseen from the outside, and finshed the roof itself in tongue and groove in the back portion of the house. Needless to say, mold and water damage was extensive, having been unseen for many years. The roof was replaced, the underlying structure brouight up to code, and the gutters replaced.

I requested an estimate for a complete reroofing on the upper level of the roof (including rafters and plywood) and an estimate for the lower roof (including plywood). Despite our specific instructions of what we wanted, the estimater refused to give us a price for the entire job, and continued to leave out things on the estimate. We sat at our kitchen table and said, what is the cost for replacement of rafters and plywood for the upper roof. He handed us an estimate, and it only contained an estimate for the lower roof. When we pointed out that the estimate didnt include the upper roof, he rewrote the estimate, and when we looked at the 2nd estimate, it still did not include the plywood for the upper deck. Both my husband and I felt that if we didn't catch this error, it would have been a costly mistake for us. Buyer beware of forgotten items on estimates. It was a shame because I really wanted to hire this company. It is beneficial for the contractor to include "open" items in a bid. However, that does not benefit me. I know the rafters and the wood need replacing on my upper roof and the roof size doesn't change, so why would they not be able to give me a closed estimate? Strange. We didn't hire these folks despite the fact that they came with good reviews. It's a shame, I had several estimates from several roofing companies and frankly, if they could have given us an accurate estimate of what work we wanted them to perform, we would have hired them.

I received notice from my tenant that the roof in the house was leaking. Having no personal references for roofers, and dreading the thought of finding a contractor, my husband told me about Angie's List, which I signed up for immediately. That same day, I called Modern Roofing. An actual person answered, and she was friendly, thorough and accommodating. I asked her to call my tenant directly to schedule the estimate. She was happy to accommodate my being a long-distance home owner. Mike McDonell arrived on time to the appointment, was very professional, friendly and informative. He assessed the roof, saw exactly where the leak was coming from and did a patch job at no charge. He photographed the roof from various angles and Later he contacted me with a complete estimate, and explanation of the condition of the roof. I waited until the several rain storms passed to see how the patch-job held before I wrote this report. I can say the patch job had been great through the winter rains. As a bonus, Mike gave my tenant a tip on how to get the leak stain off the paint. She has reported that it worked like a charm. Even though Modern roofing provided the patch at no charge, I sent them a check for $100, but I think Modern Roofing values the Angie's List rating even more.

At first, all was good. We had them come because we are in a new house and our inspector said that we should hire roofers to come do preventative work. They told me that the roof was older but still in decent condition. They did repairs where I was told that the roof would be in good condition definitely for 2-3 years and most likely 5 years. They did work... all was good... Then the rains came. After the first rain, leaks came in through the library of our house. When I called them out, they said, "oh, we didn't know you meant that part of your roof as well." (not sure why they thought I only wanted PART of the roof looked at). I was then given an estimate of $2,000 additional to have that area completely reroofed (they said it needed more than repairs). Needless to say, we used another company, and had that area reroofed for half of their estimate. The next rain, we started getting leaks in our dining room. When we initially called, they came out, did some patches, and said that the problem was definitely due to our A/C unit. We paid to have the A/C people come out, only to tell us, "no, there's puddling on your roof. That's the problem." When the next rain came and the leaks continued, they came back out and said, "oh, yeah, it's the puddling. You need a new roof. Cost will be $4500." When I asked about the first repair and being told that the roof would last five years (and not just one rainstorm), they responded... "I don't know why we told you that." Again, needless to say, we went ahead and called the other company and had a new roof put it for a thousand dollars less. I give Modern a "C" instead of an "F" because, after all this, a different person called and offered a lower cost solution that they would warranty. However, at this point, I just decided to reroof with the lower cost company. This company didn't stand behind what they told me, and because of that, we essentially wasted $1300 doing a repair that was worthless. Also, their prices always came in the highest of all estimates.

Great, no problems . Loved the fact that Carl came out before and after the job to check and examined the work performed. Wish all contracting companies were like Modern Roofing. Also got written and verbal confirmation of work schedule. The crew was on-time and ready to work....

This job was actually two jobs, done within about 3 weeks of each other. So the price is for both, they were 1600 each. They were also done on different properties, so two separate roofs. Their estimator was out at the houses within 48 hours each time. He was extremely knowledgeable and had a couple of different solutions. The work was completed 8 to 10 days later and there have been no further leaks and it has been raining since. On the first visit it was hard for me to be home to pay them and they let me mail them a check, which I really appreciated since this was the first time they had done business with me. The crew was pleasant, worked fast and cleaned up really well afterwards. I have a horrible steep narrow driveway so the cleanup is made more complicated by that. I will continue to use this company in the future. It was a good experience and the price was fair for the work done.

We called Modern Roofing and Mike came out and gave us an estimate. The nice thing was he gave us a detailed drawing of the roof lines and exact square footage. They were priced in the middle of 4 estimates. I told him he wasn't the lowest bid. He then matched the price of the lowest bid, which was nice. Also, Modern Roofing's quote included more extras than the other estimates! Mike designed custom metal pieces for the front of the fascia so the tiles looked great. Monier Lifetile doesn't make these metal pieces so it was really cool that Modern Roofing had them built so we could have our custom roof! They started on time and kept the place clean. We had a little snag with a private contractor ( not from Modern Roofing ) but they worked around him and made up for lost time. As the project was ending there were a few things i wanted addressed and they were on it. I would have to say that this was a great experience and they are really professional. Great company from top to bottom! I would HIGHLY recommend them to anybody with anysize project.
Description of Work: They tore off my old concrete roof and replaced it with new lightweight concrete tiles. Replaced old wood that was rotted and put down new felt and added a raised baton system that improves air flow between the roof and tiles. Keeps the house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Someone checked in with me at the end of every day to ask if I had any questions and to let me know what would happen next. They started work the day they promised they would. The crew was friendly, neat and professional. The project was completed on time and the final invoice reflected exactly what I was quoted. I am more than satisfied with my new roof and would use them again as well as recommend their work to friends and family.
Description of Work: Mario and his crew completely removed and hauled away two layers of comp roofing and the original worn out shake roofing. They installed new 1/2" OSB decking and a new GAF/Elk Timberline roof within the space of one week (as agreed).

He said he would email me a quote that evening. None came. I called the next day and he said he was preparing side-by-side quotes. No email. I called the next day, got his cell phone number; I left a message. No quote ar return call ever came. This is 11/12.
