Description of Work: we received several quotes on a small patio expansion/repair; we chose mike guttman because , in addition to good angie's list reviews, his quote of $3700 was very reasonable, and he exudes a sort of confidence we found believable (this "confidence" we soon gave other names). FIRST WARNING SIGN: while all other quotes we received were detailed, written documents, michael's was a voicemail message. michael says he doesn't like to write things down until it's time to write the actual contract. so, fine.the quote included the tile - which he identified as lincoln pavers - which he said would be easy to match; we were responsible only for the deco tile which would go on the stair risers.we came to this agreement in early may, with work scheduled to start on july 9th. with this in place, we ordered several thousand dollars' worth of patio furniture, now that we would actually have a patio to put it on. very good, very happy, very exciting.a couple of weeks ago, with the start date approaching, i asked mike to come over, so we could review details, and - most important, i wanted to see a sample of the tile, so i could be comfortable with the "easy match" of which he had assured us. the good news was, the color was a decent match, but the size was wrong. mike said "no problem" - we'll take an exact measure and get back to you.a day passed. 2 days passed. on the evening of the third day, mike called. turns out, he says, he's unable to match the size. the only thing to do, he says, is what we really should have done in the first place: we have to peel off all the old tile and replace it with all new tile. he goes on to say how much better it will be this way, and how much more i'll enjoy my patio this way.i, meanwhile, am fuming, and i ask him to stop telling me how i will feel about things and please tell me how much he wants to charge for this new job. well, he wants to charge $7200.$7200!! which is nearly double his original quote of $3700. to me, this felt like a classic bait and switch. clearly, this is a person with whom i would never do business.
