At the proposal, Dennis was very nice, cooperative, promised many things, including we could ask questions along the way. We accepted his estimate, paid a deposit without any adjustments. He began on time. His attitude, his treatment of us and our home were a problem from the first day. He was hostile, surly, rude, and impatient (a bully). When I asked what happened between to his "proposal day" nice demeanor, he quipped back, "I have two personalities, one at proposal, another on the job site." He dismissed and acted very impatient with any questions, especially mine. Even putting his hand in my face, like a stop sign at one point. He had promised to rig up a laundry sink in the garage so we could have a makeshift kitchen, when asked about this a week into the work, he said, "Oh, you don't have a drain in the garage, so I can't" (really should have looked at that before making the promise), I rigged up a make shift sink, running a hose out under the garage door. Sunday was a non-work day. He showed up unannounced at our house and walked right in the front door without knocking.I asked to let us know when our dogs needed to be gone, we would kennel them. Two separate days, we came home to find our dogs tied to bushes in the back yard, tangled up, no water, and in the sun. We kenneled them from that day forward. Bad referral: At the proposal, we asked about getting our ceilings scraped and reconditioned (after re-pipe and re-wire), the dry wall reconditioned and all painted. He referred us to his friends at Sharpline raving about their quality and professionalism. I contacted them before Dennis began, got my estimate, paid a deposit, and scheduled with them for the time frame Dennis gave. They had full disclosure on the work Dennis was going to do. The day before Sharpline was to begin, they came over and said it would cost 50% more because of the excessive HOLES Dennis had cut to re-pipe and re-wire. We felt cheated, to go from $6,000 to $9,000 for the same work, felt like a huge scam by one or both. I had called Sharpline during Dennis' work to ask if they wanted to come over and take a look for adjustments, they declined. Worse, Dennis came over to micromanage what they did! It was not his contract. We had cabinetry and granite being by other companies, and wood flooring, so we paid the extra $3,000 to stay on schedule. Dennis did well on some of the work. But not do a quality job on many of the aspects of our home. The outside stucco repair (from the re-pipe) is badly patched. He did not reinstall wainscoating in the bathroom well, it has a mid board cut and splt wood. We have many recessed light cans falling out because (as found later by a handyman) he TAPED them in. We discovered an outlet inside a cupboard taped to the wall with no cover over the junction box. These all cost money to fix. BUT The worst part was though the damage that Godwin Construction caused, and denied. Then his attitude about the paying for damage repair. Here is the list of damage: 1. Newly installed granite backsplash cracked because they waited till it was installed to grind out a hole through stucco for the vent hood. 2. Damaged our beautiful piano with dents and scratches because he did not want to wrap it in a blanket, just threw plastic over it. 3. His worked used a custom built closet shelf as a step and broke it. 4. Left holes unrepaired in the back of both bathroom vanity cabinetry (cherry and oak) for re-pipe. Got water on make up and towels in the same cabinetry (did not remove those items before replacing pipes). 4. Tile in master bath (from previous remodels) was damaged. 5. Scraped and damaged Thermafoil cabinetry. 6. During re-pipe dented freezer, and knocked over drain cleaner on top of high end Kitchenaid washer. 7. Then his worker shot a nail through one of the new pipes he had installed just weeks prior (see notes below). So many days we would find some problem. The water not turned back on, the water heater bypass left closed (no hot water). The electricity to part of the house not turned on. The washer left pulled out. One day they had gotten the carpet leading into the master bedroom SOAKED. They did not do anything to dry it. It was filthy from their work boots walking over the wet carpet. Not covered. The white grout in the master bath was left filthy from the same problem. No mention, no effort to clean up. His workman caused a second flood in a bedroom (see #7 above). We discovered the nail in the pipe the hard way, finding the carpet, walls and furniture soaking wet. Upon discovering this, we called Dennis on a Sunday night to have someone come and patch the still spewing pipe. They came, we kept the section of pipe with the nail. Then we called our homeowners insurance company to report yet another clean up and repair. Dennis threw a fit! He wanted to clean it up and do all the repair without the insurance company finding out. He screamed and yelled at my husband, calling us thieves. My husband fired him, and we found others to finish the last few details of the work. It was in total the most stressful, difficult 5 months of our lives. Not to mention we had to get the bedroom repaired (walls, carpet, etc.), furniture legs repaired from the 2nd flood his worker caused. Dennis' arrogance, hostility, bossiness, and the daily assault on our home were beyond ridiculous. He even stated, "you will hate me when I'm here at your home, but you will love the product so much you refer me to your friends." Not a chance. Our other contractors for this job (cabinet, floor and granite) found it so difficult to work around him (bully tactics) they ALL told me to call them when he was out of here. We got the damaged piano, poorly installed lighting fixed, and finished the work using other contractors and deducted it from the final payment. All of this is documented. Since then we have had other work done on our house, and not even a single problem.
Description of Work: Dennis was hired to repair and remodel kitchen, Den, front room, Dining Room, re-pipe, re-wire, other miscellaneous improvements after a major flood in our home. He did install cabinetry, granite, wood flooring, scrape, recondition ceilings and walls. This was due to his lack of time available to complete the project in between jobs. We could not wait for more of his time to be available due to the flood damage making our home almost unlivable.
