Due to the stellar reviews, I told my realtor that I wanted to select the home inspector when I made an offer on a house. Ten years ago, I purchased a lemon of a house, and this time I wanted a reliable, trustworthy home inspector who would call out potential issues that I would not notice. I am fairly well-versed in catching home issues, but I wanted more. I was so pleased with Jay! I had a list of concerns ready, when I met him at the house; I wanted him to validate whether the issues would be easy or difficult to address. He walked me through his process before he even started. He then went through the house with a software application that he built to ensure he does not miss anything on his checklist. His checklist was thorough, from rooftop to crawlspace. He gained my trust, as he provide his perspective on aspects of the house - and increased my trust, when he deferred to other inspector's opinions in two areas. It will be such a pleasure to move into a house that does not constantly cause grief! I truly believe I know what I am getting into, now, thanks to Jay. Without hesitation, I would recommend him and use him again.

Description of Work: Jay was recommended by my realtor. He was terrific. Very thorough inspection and report, great handling of my questions, convinced me what was important to address when deciding offer price, enhanced my comfort with purchase. And now, a few years after purchase, and from memory of my home and at no charge, he has made some excellent suggestions for how to handle items that require (unsurprisingly) work. Great guy and service.

This is our first house and our first home inspection, but I can't imagine an inspection being done any better than Jay Marlette did for us. We arrived early--you'll definitely want to attend the inspection--but he was there before us, getting ready to start right on time, having ridden his fully loaded Xtra-cycle from Berkeley to well east on the 580. Once you meet Jay and sign the inspection agreement, get ready for a singular experience. In four hours, talking non-stop, he takes you through your entire house and draws on a deep fund of knowledge to tell you everything you could possibly want or need to know about it, top to bottom, inside and out. He welcomes questions and answers them thoroughly and patiently. You can go everywhere he goes if you choose to do so (I went on the roof and into the attic) except for the sub-area of the house, where I would have liked to join him if he'd had an extra pair of coveralls. As you proceed, he makes the electronic notes that will go into the making of an exceptionally detailed and informative report, delivered the next day, that is effectively a checklist for everything you'll need to know to keep up and maintain your house, including a summary and a list of priority jobs. This is an invaluable document, both now, during the critical inspection phase, and in the future when you sell your home--an eventuality that Jay prudently keeps in mind throughout. Setting up the appointment is easy with his online booking system. No call backs: you know right away when your appointment will be. Jay costs more than comparable inspectors but the familiarity you gain with your new home, the excellent report you get the very next day, and the issues he discerns, make his service worth the cost. His vigilance turned up numerous issues that the seller's home inspection report failed to identify. He's very friendly and personable, and clearly loves the work he does so well. He even brings snacks. I highly recommend him.

Jay is a great provider. First, he's tech savvy with a nice online scheduling application. This is a livesaver when buying a house and having a short inspection period. He communicated well before, during, and after the inspection. He was prompt. And picky (well, that's what you want in an inspector). He talks a mile a minute, and prefers that you follow along and see everything he's seeing. Seems he's half inspector, half home repair educator. Unlike some other providers he'll check out the roof (to a limit). He was willing to move the odd obstruction out of the way (and put it back just as it was). He had little booties to put over his boots to protect the carpet. And he saved the overalls and dirty jobs for last. He started at 10am on the dot, finished just a tad late at 2pm, and worked every minute in between. He'll come to the house by bicycle if you're close enough.
