About us

This is Rupert and my team at Summit Deck Doctor. We offer Deck Finishing, Deck Repairs and Deck Build within 25 miles of Los Gatos. We know you have a choice and hope you will choose us! There are three things that make us different from other contractors: LOOKS BETTER, LASTS LONGER, JOB DONE. Here’s why: 1) LOOKS BETTER. a. We avoid lap marks where two layers overlap. Not every contractor understand the import of maintaining a wet edge to avoid these dark marks on your deck. B) we stain the edges of the boards so you don’t get “zebra stripes” – very visible and distracting drips down the sides of the boards (other contractors charge extra to fix this), c) we use lots of drop cloths to avoid spills (so no more careless mess below the deck). 2) LASTS LONGER. a). We use reliable durable stains, not the cheapest ones (unlike other contractors), b) we use hybrid stains, not environmentally-unfriendly and smelly oil stains which have very poor durability. c) we apply stains in the shade or the cool of the evening to allow stain to sink in and so they last twice as long (unlike contractors who don’t seem to read the instructions on the can which say “don’t apply in sunshine”). 3). JOB DONE. a). I will be coming to give you the quote and I am the owner (unlike other contractors who send a sales guy who might make promises the company can’t keep). b) I will write up the quote then and there (no waiting a week for a contractor to type it up), c) I will be calling you every night during the work to make sure you are happy. IN SUMMARY: We put special care into refinishing your deck and handrails so they look stunning, in giving you twice the durability of other contractors, and in getting the job done efficiently. We believe we halve the cost of refinishing your deck because we apply stains in a way that doubles the durability of your deck finish which means you have it done once not twice, saving you money. WANT TO KNOW MORE? Download our 90 page book "Deckology; The Art & Science of Deck Finishing and Carpentry" which explains the refinishing and carpentry process. (Look for deckology33.pdf). WE WON’T LET YOU DOWN. We have worked on over 1000 decks, have been in business for 12 years, are accredited at A+ with the Better Business Bureau, are a Super Service Award Winner at AngiesList.com with over 50 reviews, have a 5 star rating on Yelp with over 38 reviews, and are certified by the EPA for removal of toxic finishes. We are licensed, bonded and carry workers compensation insurance for your protection. We offer Fixed Prices, which include all labor and material expenses; this gives you peace of mind with no hidden costs. Our payment schedules are all milestone-based, which means you pay only when a milestone in work is achieved, providing you with reduced risk and more peace of mind. Contracts are proper written contracts; nice and clear, and professional; how it should be. Unlike other contractors we work on your job continuously - no "dragging it out;” most jobs can be completed in 4 days' continuous work. We leave you a partial can of stain once we have finished so you know what stain we used, when it comes time to refinish the deck in the future. BEFORE YOU CALL. If you really don’t know what these things cost, then it would be helpful if you can estimate the size of your deck by pacing it out – so we can give you a ballpark estimate when you call PLEASE NOTE: Don't forget to read our reviews in both "Deck Maintenance" and "Decks and Porches" categories.

Emergency Services Offered

Services we offer

We offer three services: 1. DECK REFINISHING: We carefully pressure-wash, scrub on fungicide and wood brightener, meticulously brush stain onto deck surfaces using a thousand-bristle brush, and spray handrails for a consistent finish. 2. DECK REPAIRS: Unlike painters, we can conveniently take care of pesky deck repairs like replacing boards. 3. DECK BUILD: if it’s less than 7 feet off the ground, we can do it!

Services we don't offer

a. We don't build or do heavy repair work on decks more than 7 ft off ground (too difficult to hold up beams for our team). b. We don't offer metacrylic or membrane flat roof deck coverings (much too difficult and messy). c. We don't stain shingles. d. We don't do build or repair tile decks or stone patios. e. We will happily finish fences but we don't build them.

Description of Work: I had called Deck Doctor to stain 3 large decks made of IPE (a Brazilian hardwood). I was very happy that Deck Doctor could fit me into their busy schedule, as the window for deck staining was closing fast. Rupert gave me a lot of personal attention and helped me pick the type of stain and color. He was very clear on explaining the procedures that would be used. It went very well, in spite of the fact that the staining of the last deck had to be carried out in the dark of night. Rupert came to inspect the work done and went out of his way to address one of my concerns. He and his worker are very skilled and take great pride in the work they do. I will call upon them again, later this year, to re-stain the decks.

Thanks for the review. Yes, we were definitely having to work strange hours to get your job done before the rains! Your ipe had a large variation in finish form the previous contractor's work and we had to very carefully work on the stain consistency. It certainly looks spectacular. Applying stain out of direct sunlight (not normally after dark, of course!) massively increases the durability of the stain.

Very kind, thanks! We were able to shore up and level a sagging corner of your deck, and replace rotting boards for a small fraction of the cost of fixing when it got a lot worse! Pleasure working with you both.

Description of Work: Refinished our front deck (500 sq ft redwood) and back deck (1500 sq ft ipe) with two sets of stairs. Power washing, some light sanding, and toner/preservative applied by brush. Excellent work - fast and thorough. Also did several deck chairs and benches (power wash and spray application). We are very pleased with the results.

We do several ipe decks a month now. Ipe (=ironwood, mangaris etc) is a very hard wood and the wood is difficult for stains to penetrate. San Jose's Decking Superstore recommends re-staining hardwood decks with oilbased stains every 6 months. Well. no one is going to do that. We have a much better stain that lasts three years or more. It needs careful application and extensive wiping-back of excess stain (hard on the knees!) but it works, and looks good. Glad you liked the effect!

Description of Work: I don't remember the date--maybe 5 years or so ago. I don't remember the cost, but it was competitive with two other estimates. Very helpful, accommodating, professional, prompt. I think that maybe Rupert has changed his business model somewhat in the meantime, possibly more expensive, but that is only my impression--no data to substantiate. His associate nailed down some loose deck boards, power washed and painted a deck of about 400 square feet, and some benches. At the time of working with us he didn't have a contractor's license which would cover building or replacing a deck. His work (painting, etc which he did for us was covered by his license). He stated that he was going to get license to build, but I don't know if he has accomplished this yet;

You can't go wrong witha deck inspection, can you? A modest price for a lot of peace of mind. It's nice to know that things aren't as bad as they seem, or even to catch problems before they get worse. I do recommend potential clients to be willing to pay for a comprehensive report once every decade. Decks are expensive things and increase the value of our homes tremendously; well worth a little TLC from a professional (of course Iwold say that!).

We always enjoy working with you, over almost a decade, as you call us in as your decks need repair and refinishing. Yes, it is funny how others will recommend replacing a deck when we can find ways of repairing it, at a tenth of the cost! I hope you will get many more years of use out of your decks. Call us again in a few more years when they need some more refinishing!

I am glad you recently called us in to put another coat on, after 3 years. Very wise. Good idea to keep up with the weather and refinish it beore it goes gray all over. It's a sad fact, and maybe a dirty secret of the industry, that most stains have 95% disappeared after 2 years, unless carefully applied. Yes, quite incredible! However there is an answer, and we know it. The answer is to apply the stain in the shade or in the cool of the day. If you read the label of the stain it says "do not apply in direct sunlight or when deck temperatures are above 85 F" yet many people ignore this basic information. In our early days, even we did, and then we read the instructions diligently after we had to sand, refinish a 5000 ft deck (two coats). Ouch! As my father used to say to my mother when some appliance wouldn't work: "if in doubt, read the instructions!" Makes a big difference. Choosing and using better stains also helps. Also, those traditional oilbased stains can't cut it any more, compared to the hightech hybrid stains, so we don't use them any more. Never mind their nasty VOC emissions. (Potential clients might like to peruse our new book "Deckology: Th Art & Science of Deck Finishing and Carpentry," available on Amazon.com). We look forward to working on your deck again in the next few mnths!

Thank you for your kind comments, Member. Don't forget to point out that you have been an Angieslist member for many years and that it was in 2007 that we stained the deck with super durable stain, and so this time, we refreshed the deck stain - which makes you a happy repeat customer! It also demonstrates that we carefully apply stains so that they really do last 2-3 times longer than the cheap stains other people use, providing better value for you as a client. Thanks again; see you in a few more years!

I have about 600 square feet of old redwood decks that needed repairs plus maintenance. Rupert provided a very competitve quote and showed up to do the work when he said he would. Since it was the fall, there was some chance of rain, and Rupert explained to me ahead of time that he didn't want to stain the decks in the rain since that would wash off some of the stain before it had a chance to adhere, but he would be able to repair and wash the decks. Naturally, it did rain after the start of the work, which delayed things by a couple of days, but when it dried out the work was done on time and better than what I had expected. The work included replacing a half dozen rotten boards, some carpentry to shore up a couple of steps, and removal of some decayed material from the ends of some boards. When one replacement board turned out to be a bit higher than the old board next to it, Rupert replaced the additional old board at no additional charge even though that wasn't part of the initial quote. The carpentry work seems solid and reliable. Rupert and partner also pressure washed the decks and railings and stained the decks and railings. They did a thorough job, and the stain seems to be holding up nicely through a couple months of heavy rains. In a few years when the decks need to be maintained, I'll definitely give Rupert another call.
Description of Work: Work included replacement of several rotten redwood planks on the deck; carpentry to repair old steps, removal of some decayed material on the ends of some boards and around a tree trunk that comes through the deck, pressure washing and opaque stain of 600 square feet of redwood deck and associated railings.

Well, for a house built in 1927, and repaired many times, there were certainly some challenges to doing the repair work! Replacing a few boards here on there on the main deck, and then using a superdurable opaaque stain that make all the boards, rejuvenated the deck at a very affordable price. I get the impression that contractors are tempted to increase their prices when in San Mateo County; we charge everyone the same prices. Hope to hear from you again in a few years!

Thanks! I see you moved from the Bay Area to Massuchusetts! (Don't worry, other AngieslIst clients: we don't do work out of California! In fact we work on large decks within 25 miles from Los Gatos, so up to Emerald Hills In San Mateo). We are glad to have got all that work done before the rains, and that you were able to get a better price fo the house when you sold it, thorugh our work! Several recent surveys have shown that there are only 5 areas of a house that will gain you your money back, and decks are one of those 5 areas. (Swimming pools are the worst: they only increase the value of the hosue 51% of your outlay!).

Rupert was always on top of it and gave me updates on the progress of the job. I always knew what to expect ahead of time. We had to deal with rain which delayed the job a day or two since Rupert wanted to make sure the deck was completely dry (even though the stain they used can be applied to damp wood). Michael was very patient during the entire process even though it's extremely tedious and time-consuming job. I appreciated both Rupert and Michael's promptness and attention to detail. They left the premises clean and tidy once the job was complete. I would most certainly use them again for any future staining needs.
Description of Work: Michael pressure washed the main deck, two large built-in planters with a large bench seating, stairs leading to the deck, and a small deck surface near the west side of the house. Once the deck was dry, he came back a few days later to work on the surface of the two decks, planters, and 30 steps of the stairs by carefully applying the stain with a brush. He applied two coats. A few days later, Michael returned to spray the hand rails of the stairs. He was very careful to cover everything surrounding the rails including the newly planted flowers and trees (even the large pine that is near the top of the stairs), so that the stain only adhered to the rails/wood, but nothing else.

I thought they were okay. Their positives were that they were very good with communication and were very easy to get a hold of. They were also prompt and worked with the scheduling. The cons were that when we got into the project, I found some things weren't stained right and once my sprinklers came on, they were a little less accommodating. They just wanted to get in and get out. All-in-all they did pretty good work, and I was happy with it.

We chose to stain the deck with the top of the line Cabot's 4 year SPF product. Before starting, I spoke with the technical support personnel at Cabots about our deck and learned about proper preparation and application procedures. Rupert, the Deck Doctor, did very good preparation work. However, he did not do a proper job applying the stain. Cabot's instructions are very clear that the stain should not be applied in the sun or when the deck is hot to the touch. In these conditions, the stain dries almost on contact and never penetrates the wood. When this happens, the stain peels off prematurely and the life of the stain is greatly reduced. (This top of the line SPF product can last up to 4 years.) As Rupert began working, I became concerned that he was applying the stain in the full sun on warm October days. I talked to Rupert about this issue as he was working, but he insisted that everything was fine. One of Rupert's great strengths is as a salesman - he is very charming and reassuring. Unfortunately, he was dead wrong about what he was doing. Within a year, the stain started peeling off the deck. I called Rupert about this one time and he blamed the problem on the Cabot stain. He showed no inclination to make things right. Over the next year, the stain continued to peel off prematurely. Eventually, after about 20 months, I realized I would have to re-stain the entire deck. I called Cabots technical support again to ask about how to do this. When they learned how quickly the stain had started peeling off, they surprised me by volunteering to send me a carton of the SPF stain free of charge. This was despite the fact that I told them about Rupert's incorrect methods. Cabot's integrity impressed me. With a helper, I redid the stain myself this year, following the directions given to me by Cabots technical support. The deck looks great again and I expect the stain to last the advertised 3-4 years. This time the job cost me about $150 using a hired helper. BTW - I had kept track of how much time Rupert spent on my job in 2005. I figured I wound up paying him about $100 an hour to stain my deck - way too much for the nature of the work. Summary: if you plan to use Rupert Hart, The Deck Doctor, be prepared to pay a big premium for labor and also be prepared to monitor his work closely. Be sure he is following the stain manufacturer's instructions. Update: He saw my negative review in Angie's List, and contacted me to try and make the situation right. I was not in a position to accept his help right away, but I contacted him a year later when I was able to. He redid the deck staining at his expense. In the spirit of goodwill, I paid for the materials. I regard Rupert as an individual who cares about his reputation and stands by his work. If the pricing was right, I would use him again.
Description of Work: Please read to the end to see the whole story. The project was to finish a 4 year old unsealed wood deck with Cabot's SPF 4 year stain product. The work included cleaning, bleaching and staining. We built a new deck in 2001 but had not sealed it when new. Since we face due South, the deck takes a beating in the sun and just 4 years later it was already starting to show some negative effects. So, we asked the Deck Doctor for a bid to stain the deck in October 2005. The bid was $1500, which seemed very high for the scope of the project, but we accepted it because I did not have the time to do the work myself and I didn't have another option to get the job done before the rainy season.

I am very sorry to hear of the deck problem and we are happy to refinish your deck for you, when it next needs doing, at our expense. It is 4 years since we did your deck on October 12,2009. Since then, I have also come to believe that excess heat during stain application is a major factor in causing peeling, and I am sorry for the problems this has caused you. Since then, we have completed over 220 decks with the same type of stain and our repeat business since then indicates that we have overcome this problem. I came across your write-up on Angie's List recently. I can understand that your unhappiness and thank you for your even-handed opinion. It pains me to see our stellar record spoiled by a less-than-satisfactory report and I trust our response will indicate the depth of our concern. I did not think there was a heat problem at the time, for these reasons: Cabot products are very resilient; I applied the stain onto the damp deck surface shortly after the pressure-washing so the deck temperature should have remained low; the job was performed at an even and brisk pace to get good coverage before the deck got hot. I would like to assure of my best efforts at all times. What you have experienced is very rare. Yours was the third deck we had done with this new stain from Cabot. We found that peeling occurred on 3 decks with Cabot SPF: the early ones from 2004 and 2005. The stain was new to the market and it proved to be rather sensitive to sunlight during application. Nowadays, we stain early in the morning, use shade structures, check deck temperature using an infrared gauge, and gently mist the deck to cool it. We now have the peeling problem solved. Please allow me to correct an inaccuracy. You did not mention concerns about peeling until I saw this Angie's List posting. Looking at my notebook, you left a message on Dec. 19th 2005 saying you were concerned about some yellow patches on your deck. I left a message that day advising you they would go away as the damp deck dried. I tried to reach you twice more but was able to talk to you in person only a few days later, on Dec. 21st, 2005, when you told me that the yellow areas had disappeared and you apologized for using my time. I am sorry you feel we were expensive. I feel the price we agreed upon was industry standard rate for a good stain, applied in 2 coats, including the additional carpentry you ordered. Also, your house is 40 minutes from the nearest town down a single track road. We do try to take care of problems and keep customers happy. We have very few problems (<2%), and we have many repeat customers (45%), and good referrals (10-15%). I am genuinely sorry that there was a problem on your deck. Rupert

We are very pleased with Rupert and his work. His estimate was reasonable. He was able to do the work promptly and quickly; showed up on time; explained what could be done and what needed to be done being conscious of our budget; called to confirm; made helpful suggestion and did not hesitate to give advice for work that he does (power washing and staining) that I preferred to do myself. I would call him again for deck work and highly recommend him. Others who bid the job would only quote replacing the whole deck which was not necessary at this time.
Description of Work: Repair to portions of a deck that had termite and dry rot damage.

Well, since your comments several years ago, we have refinished your deck, and refinished your sister's deck on your recommendation! Now that is a vote of support, thanks! If I remember, you mentioned that, having done your own deck once, you didn't want to do it again and would rather play golf! We agree: "life is short, outsource the messy bits!"

We were looking for someone to save our beautiful decks. We wanted the best protection we could get and we wanted minimum fuss during the process; 353-DECK delivered just that. The quality of the product used was consumer reports highest rating, Rupert was on time, the job was done neatly and I couldn't be more proud of the way our decks look. We have had other vendors that don't show up, leave a mess and take forever. Rupert and his team were in and out in two days and everything looks perfect!
Description of Work: We have six different decks surrounding our home. All made of clear redwood that we wanted to preserve. The decks needed a lot of prep as it had been some years since they were treated. The job was prep the decks by careful pressure washing and deliver two coats of high quality stain.

We enjoyed working on your deck! I am glad we were able to rejuvenate the decks after many years of not being protected against the sun, and that you were able to get a better price for the house on its sale. We will miss you from the local community and wish you well in your new home.

Rupert gave a very reasonable estimate after evaluating the work requested. He was thorough with his explanation of the work to be done and the time frame to complete it. He replied quickly to our phone calls regarding questions about the work to be done. He started the project soon after the estimate was given and completed it in a short period of time (three days). Stain application was done by hand and brush strokes were not seen. We are happy and pleased with Rupert's work as our wood deck looks brand new.
Description of Work: Rupert first pressure washed and cleaned our old, weather beaten wood deck. He repaired the deck by replacing and adding support under one side of the deck as well as repairing several other boards. A weather protecting stain was then placed.

Rupert and his team did an excellent job. All railings were stained front and back, as well as the fascia on the decks. The deck boards were coated deep into the knots. Even the hard to reach places on the railings and fascia were covered. The job was completed in 3 days. I am very satisfied with the work and would use The Deck Doctor again.
Description of Work: My 1900 sq feet of deck was pressure washed, as well as the railings of the decks, then a fungicide was applied. Tarps were put down to avoid drips staining the side of the house, as well as the lower level of my multilayer decks. The stain used on the decks and railings was Cabot stain. While the railings were sprayed, the deck boards themselves where stained by brush. The quoted time was less than 5 days.

Boy! Another tricky job with decks on top of decks, and above high walls all having to be shielded from drips and overspray! Glad you liked the work! We always like that side of the mountain in the beautiful trees! Don't forget to call us when you need some more maintenance!

Rupert, the owner, was very efficient and gave great value for the money. He finished ahead of schedule, and came back promptly to do the final work that needed to be done after a piece did not stick correctly. Rupert is polite and charming, and very business focused. Like every contractor, he is impossible to reach on the first try. Unlike many, he actually does return his calls, which I very much appreciate. And, he is courteous. He is not as cheap as a day laborer, by a long shot, but his work appears to be excellent, and he clearly knows what he is doing. He used imagination to get around the odd problems. He provided us with great value - and deserves a strongly positive recommendations.
Description of Work: Evaluated and repaired our deck, doing some under the deck support work and some 'sistering' of beams to eliminate soft spots. He also did a new railing cap, which saved the railing from being replaced, and a rebuilt a gate. Finally, he treated some of the wood below to reduce rot. The sistering is a technique to shore up wood that is failing with wood that is good. He saves the deck surface that way, and eliminates soft spots. It extends the life of the deck but does not rebuild it. That was important to me, I wanted to extend the life of the existing deck without using noxious chemicals. He did that, at a substantial savings over replacing it. And, he finished ahead of schedule.

Thanks for your compliments on our "great value for money." We are grateful. Yes, I do get busy in mornings setting up our teams and visiting clients. It's best to reach me live after 4pm and up to 9pm; I always love talking to real clients in person. In fact, my wife has ocasionally had to "discourage" me reaching for my phone during dinner, I like talking to clients so much! Your deck repairs taxed our ingenuity a bit; time to get it finished!
