These are extremely processional and courteous people. The move was scheduled only a week or so in advance and the movers where here on time and worked quickly and efficiently. The cost was a little bit over what I thought it would be, but it was well worth it. They moved my 3 bedroom home contents and a 10 x 10 storage unit from San Jose to a commercial building in Scotts Valley. The crew worked very hard to completely empty the storage unit and saved me close to $400 by getting everything out in one day. I recommend Rational Moving for any job, either a residential or commercial move.

For the free visual estimate about my move, Mr. Arnott, owner of Rational Moving, arrived punctually as scheduled and was friendly and straightforward; he answered my questions knowledgeably. He applied no sales pressure. I felt confident in what he said about the procedure he and his team would carry out on the day of the move. He was comfortable with my making a decision at a later date to let him know if I wanted to use his services. I called a week later to confirm that I would hire Rational for my move to another city. My telephone communications with the company were handled in a friendly, professional manner. George delivered packing materials on the date I chose. Both move day and delivery day to my out-of-town destination went perfectly. George and his crew worked efficiently and quickly, and were polite and respectful, and willing to please. To relocate was a major decision for me. Rational Moving's professional care relieved me of worry and concern about the moving process. I highly recommend the company. Coincidentally, I met a woman not long after my move who had been moved by Rational a month earlier. She moved from a very large home and raved about Rational's fine service.
Description of Work: Rational Moving moved the contents of my 2-bedroom apartment out-of-town (140 miles) in late summer of 2013. The cost was reasonable--and worth it!

Poorly. See above.
Description of Work: I waited since October 1 to write this review to be sure I had cooled off. However, I cannot recommend this moving company at all. I used the services of Rational Moving - George and Abby Arnott for the second time. The first time went great and on budget. The second time moving about two miles from Seacliff to Capitola was a disaster. Never move without getting a "not to exceed bid." While movers don't like to give this type of quote, when I moved cross country with Graebel, they were only too happy to do so. If you check out the web on moving, you will see this is essential. I had little to move since most of my stuff is still in storage in Boston. They broke, an office desk which wasn't worth a lot but I liked it and is expensive to replace, did not put my bed together correctly so I had to call the seller to come and put it together correctly at additional cost. George complained about the elevator (at least he had one) because it was so small. Abby, his wife takes the order, and George puts together the team Well, the team which was supposed to be in tact with 4 people to pack did so haphazardly. Then, they dispersed after a couple hours because George had doubled up jobs so it took longer and cost more money - nearly double the estimate. Unpacking was worse than haphazard. I have a congenital back issue that causes me chronic pain so I deliberately agreed to the rate for packing and unpacking since George argued it would be cheaper to have experienced packers than students who would take some multiple as long. Boxes were not supplied with notice. I changed locations to which I would move in a couple month period. I suspect this information was not conveyed from Abby to George or if so, it was not computed in George's brain. But the worst thing was a flame email from George chastizing me on the way I spoke with a painter who was reticient for giving me a receipt for work and product. This was none of George's business. I believe Rational to be the worst of Santa Cruz. There is a sluggishness and haphazardness that is indicative of culture that moves slowly and doesn't pay attention to detail. Not that Boston is immune from this phenomenon but Santa Cruz has it pronounced. I will never use this mover again and wish I never did.

We had a relatively small in-town move and Rational Movers provided exactly what we needed -- a truck large enough for an apartment's worth of furniture, and two movers skilled enough to get it from one residence to another (including up some tricky stairs). They arrived on schedule, and though they charge by the hour ($250 minimum for the first two hours) they worked quickly and efficiently and we were done in just over two hours. Overall a throughly helpful and professional company.
Description of Work: We bought a condo and moved across town. It was a small enough move that we didn't need packing services, and we were able to move small items ourselves. But we had some largish furniture that needed a truck and skilled movers to move.

I had Rational move my 3 bedroom house plus a storage unit into a 4 bedroom home. On the morning of the move they showed up with 7 guys and 2 trucks. They moved very quickly but very carefully. We had almost everything packed in boxes before they arrived, but they had to navigate through narrow spaces which probably slowed them down. Incredibly, they had the old house packed into the trucks in about an hour (and the old house was full of stuff). They had it all unpacked in the new house in about an hour as well. Storage ended up being another hour of loading and unloading since there was some fairly heavy furniture. They all had a great attitude, worked very hard and got the job done perfectly in less time and for less money than they estimated. All in all the bill was about 1/3 less than they bid. Since I worked with them before, I didn't get any competing bids, but previously I did and their estimate was lower than the competition's. I highly recommend these guys.

The folks from Rational Moving showed up with a truck that had plenty of room for the stuff I needed to move. They were very courteous and easy to work with. They moved the furniture quickly and carefully. We didn't have any problems at all. To top it off, they came in under their estimated price, which was lower than their competition. I would be happy to work with them again!

What a delightful experience! We moved from a 2 bedroom to a 3-bedroom within the same city (Santa Cruz). Just about 3 miles away from where we lived. All others estimated the cost to be between $1000 to $2000. Rational estimate was about $500 (without insurance). We really wondered why others were two to four time more expensive. So, we decided to take Rational. The entire move took less than about 4 hours. We were amazed!

All of our stuff was wrapped in storage because we had previously moved internationally. They local moving guys had to unwrap all of our material before putting it in our new house and that took them a lot of time. We were very pleased overall and I definitely will use them again in the future.

We had a short window of time in which to move. After being brushed off by two other companies it was a relief to speak with George, the owner, who came over the same day I called to give us an estimate. They were right on time on moving day. George kept his team well organized and moving along. At first I was anxious about the speed they were going, but soon realized they weren't being careless with our items. They laid down pads to prevent either place from being tracked through. Two things that I really appreciated about Rational moving is that George believes in recycling and when he came for the estimate he informed us of this and offered to drop by as many boxes as we needed. The other is that I had about six big potted plants on the balcony of the old residence. They were forgotten and are heavy enough we couldn't move them. George came back and got them for us even though it was two weeks later when we were finishing up the last details of cleanup in the old place. Yes, I would use them again. Rational Moving is a local company and has been around a lot of years, another reassuring point for me that turned out to be correct.

Everything went very smoothly. The men worked very quickly, but professionally. I was especially impressed with the driver of the moving van up to our house and down a winding, narrow, gravel driveway. These guys were excellent, friendly, and extremely hard-working. No items were damaged. All our belongings were kept clean and protected throughout with blankets and other materials.
Description of Work: The company owner and two workers moved our belongings from Santa Cruz to Felton. The owner packed up the kitchen and we packed the rest of the house. After loading everything on the truck, we went to a local storage location to gather our remaining belongings in storage, then headed to new home. All three men unloaded and moved in our belongings to our two story home, placing everything where I described. We moved our home offices as well, with the men moving 8 filing cabinets, all office supplies, and 30 file storage boxes into a detached office with loft.

This is an owner/operator company, which I found to be a great advantage: 1) Got the initial information and estimate from the owner himself (= accountability), 2) George the owner performed the actual work, leading the team (= no "cat's away, mouse will play" and if there are any issues, no need to try to get the decision maker on the cell phone, 3) years of experience, which paid off for me and 4) pride of ownership. I've done a fair number of moves and thought this would make a big difference - it certainly did. No way the owner is going to let a 30 year family owned business go downhill was my thought and it proved to be true. Crew arrived before George, who arrived right on time (8 am on a Sunday no less). George immediately sprung into action to get the tour of what needed to be moved (some items were not being moved). A few minutes in, he politely interrupted to get his crew started so they were working while we completed the walk through and paperwork. They were hustling like I've never seen from movers, and kept the pace through the 7 hour move. They even completed the trip to the new place so fast I almost thought they must have been speeding (but they didn't). They treated the clock as if they were paying for it, not me. I'm surprised they kept the pace for the entire day given the destination was 3-stories. In addition to their speed and efficiency, which means less cost, they were knowledgeable and able to solve several unforeseen issues (i.e. narrow doorways, heavy/awkward articles, difficult assembly/disassembly, maneuvering up the stairs with tight turns, etc. Handling the unforeseen proved to be key to get us moved with all our stuff, and to cut cost by not having 3 guys standing around scratching their head while the clock's running. George provided the best insurance option of everyone I spoke with. I chose the $4 per $1000 plan, which meant only $40 to cover full replacement of $10,000 worth of possessions or damage. Other firms had something similar but only in $10,000 increments and with a $10,000 minimum. George lets you purchase exactly what you need. Not big monetarily, but to me, showed that he's honest and not trying to keep adding in up-sells. This is where a lot of people get killed on packing. I did my own packing, but trust that George wouldn't overcharge me on packing materials like most do. Although I didn't use the service, George will provide a fixed price quote down to that packaging cost per item. He'll make sure you have no surprises. Although I didn't get the upfront quote, there were no surprises on my final price. I knew it was a tough move and would take some time.. I really can't say enough good things about Rational Moving and George Arnott the owner. I don't usually take the time to write reviews, and don't get impressed easily, but this was an exception. Rational Moving deserves, and will definitely earn your trust and business.
