+ -1 moreIt was okay. He was in and out in 15 minutes. I am not so sure that he did a great job but then again, I don't know that he didn't. I was in the shower and my husband was there and showed him to the chimney. He did his thing and by the time I got out of the shower he was gone. It was a pretty good pay, $99 for 15 minutes of work. I hope that what he did was correct and that there was no garbage built up in the chimney. We haven't been using it mostly because of the blow back but he could not do anything with the chimney top. My husband had wanted a new chimney cap and he could not do anything with that for one reason or another. And that was it. We didn't have anything negative. I don't know whether it was positive. He was in and he was out and that was it. My husband also didn't have any negative thing to say. We don't know if it was done well or not. I guess we'll find out when winter comes or when I need to use the fireplace. We don't use it that much. It has not been cleaned ever and probably 30 years of stuff built up in there and we figured it needed to be cleaned of something. $99 was certainly a fair price but whether or not he actually cleaned anything out, I don't know.

+ -1 moreIt was a pleasure to work with Mister Chimney's crew because everyone was friendly, polite, professional, on-time and on-budget. Martin Nava, who supervised our project, first visited our house to evaluate the old chimney and inspect the fireplace itself. He diagnosed the problems immediately and gave me a firm price quote. The final price was exactly what his quote was. He did not write up a contract for me to sign before he started the work, and after they started I had a fleeting thought that I should have requested a contract to avoid any possible misunderstandings after the job was done. But in fact, we did it all on a handshake and Mr. Chimney's crew was 100% honest and reliable on the financial details. (However, it is smart to ask for a written contract signed by both parties before any construction work is done on one's house because contractors can place a lien on one's house if they allege that the bill was not paid in full. If one only has a verbal understanding sealed with a handshake, one has no proof of what the original quote was!!! I knew that...but Martin Nava exuded honesty and confidence and I didn't ask for a contract when he gave me a verbal quote.) Martin Nava also gave me a completion date that was only a few days into the future. I was wondering if he could really meet such an ambitiously soon date, but in fact, the crew completed the entire project the day before it was promised to me! Wow--how often does that happen?? Really excellent service!! I wrote all of the details in the previous box under, "What Did The Provider Do?" so it's all up there. To summarize, I appreciate Angie's List's having helped me find Mister Chimney, and I especially appreciate Mr. Martin Nava and his excellent and hard-working crew of experts for doing our project very well, quickly, and exactly at the price quoted in advance.
Description of Work: Our original chimney was 55 years old and had deteriorated to the point that the inspector we hired to check the entire house before we bought it discovered that he could move the chimney by pushing it with his hand!! Very bad!! Inspector warned us that, if there were a strong earthquake, the entire chimney from the roof up could topple and possibly crash through the roof and into the house. Especially bad!! Mister Chimney's crew removed all the bricks from the roof up. The crew then installed brand-new ceramic chimney liners and reinforced the chimney with four rebar steel pieces (which the original chimney did not have). Using the original bricks that were still intact, plus some new bricks they purchased, the crew then rebuilt the entire chimney. It was done very professionally and it looks great! Because they bought new bricks quite similar to the original bricks, it's pretty much impossible to notice that there are actually different bricks in the rebuilt chimney. Very skillfully done. Also, the three-man crew was very careful to protect the roof with plywood boards while they were working. They also put down big tarps to catch all the mortar and little chunks of bricks that fall normally while this kind of work is being done. When they had completed the brick work, they carefully swept the roof, hosed it off, and cleaned up the yard under the area in which they had worked. Very neat and meticulous work, and very nice guys, too. Very polite and friendly. Also, the fireplace itself needed a new damper--the old one had done its work for 50+ years and was ready for retirement. Mister Chimney removed the old one and replaced it with a brand-new heavy-duty damper that will last a long time. Again, the craftsman who did the work covered the floors around the fireplace with tarps and cleaned up all debris when he completed the damper installation. Great job.

They had to manufacture a required part which took a few days but they completed all the work within about four days. They relined the chimney, installed a new damper, and repointed the firebox. I couldn't be more pleased with the service.

+ -1 moreMartin consistently amazes me with his professionalism. Not only he said the chimney is reasonable clean and suggested no cleaning, he waved the fees! not even charging me a minimum. He also took time to explain how to best use a L shape chimney to avoid smoke returning to unit. the trick is simple, just build the fire slightly toward the walls and open the trap door completely.
Description of Work: I am a repeat client. I am so glad I decided to call them again for another property. martin checked the chimney and said no cleaning was needed, waved the fees! he also explained how to use an L shape chimney so smoke can be avoided. His reasons make total sense. I will use Martin's service for all my properties. Thank you for an excellent job.

+ -1 morehey: arrived on time where very friendly where professional in every way very clean process listened to all of my concerns and addressed them at the end of the job. They said if there were any problems that they would let me know immediately and they would resolve them. provided a separate Condition Report for each chimney at job completion. These guys were great. I would and will hire them again. My house is 24 years old and never had the chimneys cleaned. We use the on in the downstairs family room often during the winter. They got a ton of creosote out of it. Ya, I know, a real fire hazard. We don't use the one in our master bedroom very much and I told them that. They said it probably didn't need it but I have them do it anyway. Just in case.

The rating would have been nearly perfect but arriving late and saving street parking for them for almost 25 minutes after I phoned and determined that they were on the other side of SF. Regardless both did a good job, knowledgeable (explained different types of chimney caps, chimney design, were careful to protect carpet, personable).

Finally they rearranged furniture and did final cleaning. OVER MANY YEARS OF DEALING WITH CHIMNEY CLEANERS THIS WAS BY FAR THE MOST THOROUGH AND PROFESSIONAL JOB ON OUR FIREPLACES.
Description of Work: inspected chimney caps at roof top for two chimneys; carefully removed fenders and obstructions to fireplaces; placed heavy pads in front of hearths to catch dust and ashes; did a very lengthy cleaning process inserting, moving upward and gradually adding more brush length. carefully wirebrushed the fireboxes and cleaned behind the dampers; washed the fireboxes. Carefully cleaned hearths and surrounding areas.

+ 0 moreI requested Martin to do chimney sweep because renters mentioned smoke returns to room from time to time. Martin determined that the chimney was clean, no sweep needed. Also found trap door was not completely opened hence the smoke. and instructed how to best use L shaped fireplace. His logic and advice are sound and I hope renters will not encounter smoke this winter; we shall see. will I use Mister Chimney again? Definitely. They did not even charge me, saying no sweep, no need to charge and as repeat customers, they were happy to assist. Such old fashion way of doing business is very unusual nowadays.

He informed me that the chimney company that I had out last year were trying to upsell me something unnecessary and that their prices were way to high. He said all I needed was a new chimney crown, since mine was cracked and letting water in. Two other men (forgot their names, sadly) came out to do the work a few days later. They were professional and tidy. I had a great experience overall with Mr. Chimney!

+ 1 moreMade an appointment to get my chimney cleaned and inspected (well past due.) Fatima in the office is very accomodating and works around your schedule. "Martin" the contractor is wonderful. He called in advance of the scheduled appointment and asked if he can come out a bit earlier. It worked for me! He was very thorough, spent a lot of time explaining what he found and offered suggestions.He wasn't trying to "sell" anything and gained your trust. Turns out upon inspection I have had "multiple chimney fires" that I was not aware of. End result: Scheduled another appointment to install flu liner, reline the smoke chamber with heat resistant material, install new damper (which was broken for years), and spark arrestor chimney cap. The team that came out was well organized, efficient, and cleaned up all debris. Martin is very professional, knowledgeable and personable. We were very impressed and I highly recommend them.

+ 0 moreThe fellow showed up on time and replaced the chimney cap quickly and effortlessly. It blew off again a couple of weeks ago. I decided to ask for chimney inspections since this was an expert. I did not feel the inspection report was clear and concise. At once he said that everything was fine but then added that I should consider having additional service performed if I wanted to actually use the fireplaces. He was a nice guy but I wouldn't use again.
