Everything went very well. My husband and I were again impressed by the team that drove down to San Diego for the two loads. Because there were two separate destinations for items in both the storage unit and in our home (plus items ranging from fine artwork, mid-century furniture and delicate china to 8 large tubs of Lego bricks and a handmade grandfather clock), the packing and load required extra diligence and organization. Joe, Sergio Jr and Luis immediately understood the scope of the project and were organized, efficient and careful in labeling, packing and loading. They were always respectful of our home, careful in protecting floors and walls from damage as they worked. They worked nonstop. Our load was then taken to LA, where it was stored until it could be combined with other eastbound loads. Tony, the LA scheduler, and Dave, the transcontinental driver, kept us updated with the schedule. This was a complicated move and everything went well. There was only one damaged item: scratches and gouges on a large table which I believe was due to the complications of transferring part of the load to the Chicago area moving & storage company. (Ray sent me information on making a claim for repair which I know will be handled fairly and efficiently.) Moving can be a hassle; however, everyone at Sterling knows how difficult this can be and they made this project much easier for us. They are all professional, responsive and attentive. Their customer service is superb. Thank you Doug, Billy, Tony and Ray in the LA office; Joe, Sergio Jr and Luis for the San Diego packing and pickup; and to Dave, who delivered the shipments to Chicago. They may call themselves Sterling, but they are the gold standard for moving.
Description of Work: This was a complicated move: pick-ups from 2 locations in San Diego (a home and an offsite storage facility) and deliveries to 2 separate locations in the Chicago area -- and on different days due to scheduling which ultimately necessitated Sterling to transfer the 2nd part of the load to a Chicago area moving & storage company for delivery. We had used Sterling a year ago for another pickup and delivery of goods to the Chicago area and knew they would be the right team for this job.

I contacted Sterling Van Lines (Doug), they rushed to retrieve this piano (it would have been ruin by rain), got it on the first truck coming 1,500 miles this way. Called along the way and delivered it to my home in perfect shape. Service was excellent!

So far, great -- I'll update the review when my belongings arrive at the other end! Our situation is that we haven't sold our house in LA yet, but most of our belongings were packed up and put in storage so the house would show well. In the meantime, we rented an unfurnished house in the Boston area, so we suddenly had to ship out enough of our belongings to furnish it. We had stuff at two locations, our house and the storage unit, and both were inaccessible to a full-sized truck or container. We weren't moving everything, so I had to pick and choose as my belongings were being loaded, requiring patience on the part of the movers. I also hoped to accomplish the move the same week I was calling! I interviewed three movers over the phone. Since my boxes were already packed, I assumed that a container mover would be cheapest. I found a good one, but they couldn't accommodate my access problems without incurring a large additional expense and a lot of trouble on my part. Sterling, a full service mover, was willing to accommodate everything at essentially the same cost as the container company. Sandy was great to deal with on the phone, very patient at explaining the pricing rules. (I think these are fairly standard in the industry, but they are confusing because they quote by the pound but they actually measure cubic feet and multiply by a standard factor. Since I was splitting my move, it turned out to be more economical to ship my heavy things and leave the light-weight furniture behind.) The movers arrived that Friday, as promised, with a large pick-up truck to shuttle my belongings to the van, and three helpful, friendly, and patient movers. Furniture was carefully wrapped, each box was tagged before it was loaded, and care was taken with boxes marked as fragile. The movers helped me move everything out of the storage room, then put the things back that I was leaving behind. As we loaded, I of course discovered many items that I hadn't thought of when we made the initial estimate. I expected a "gotcha" on the final bill, but it was finalized before the movers drove away at a price very close to what we originally agreed to. If everything goes as smoothly at the other end, I'll be a very happy customer.
Description of Work: Sterling loaded up furniture and pre-packed boxes from two locations in Los Angeles (my home and a storage unit), both with difficult access. All together they filled up about 16 feet of a moving truck. Both locations required a shuttle due to access difficulties (windy streets to the house and low clearance at the storage facility parking lot.

I was extremely pleased with this experience. Having moved previously, I was aware that many companies do not like small loads, and the thought of shipping furniture by UPS was daunting. I used my favorite search engine to search on "small load moves" and Sterling was near the top. Although I was in TX, I called the LA number and spoke with some really helpful people, who immediately set to work to arrange a pickup in my limited time frame. Delivery at my house was hampered by a curvy driveway with 8 per cent grade near the bottom. Delivery crew brought a smaller truck and navigated the driveway beautifully, carrying the pieces a bit further in order to avoid damage to driveway walls. All came together beautifully, and the furniture arrived in NV within the four week window I hoped for. All that, and the delivery driver accepted payment by credit card. So different from moves I made years ago! I am no longer afraid of the prospect of moving a small load. I will definitely use these folks in the future.
Description of Work: I had a small load of household goods to move from TX to NV, on very short notice. Load consisted of 8-10 small pieces of furniture such as upholstered chairs and tables. I contacted Sterling on a Monday, and they were able to arrange pickup the following weekend (Sunday) in Boerne, TX. When the driver and his helper arrived, they wrapped each piece of furniture carefully in moving quilts and loaded the furniture on their truck. Original estimate was 4-6 weeks for the load to show up at my home in NV. I explained to the driver that I would be traveling again after about four weeks, and he said he'd do all he could to get the load to NV before I was on the road again.

I contacted several companies and settled on Sterling after reading reviews on Angie's List. Everyone one I dealt with at Sterling was wonderful. From setting up the move to getting the furniture delivered. Dave, the van driver/furniture mover, was very professional and extremely nice to work with. He even called in route to update me on the day and time of delivery. Unfortunately, one sliding glass door for the hutch broke in transit and I'm in the process of working with Sterling on the claim. I'm confident that all will be well based on how they've handled everything else so far.
Description of Work: I had two pieces of furniture moved from California to Louisiana. One was a moderately-sized hutch and the other a small 3-drawer chest.

The pickup went smoothly, but the deliveries were a nightmare. Not only did the order get mixed up, with two large, heavy items being sent to Colorado by mistake (which the Company wanted to charge us additional for to send to the correct address), but the length of time to deliver was delayed (a month) by the Company waiting to get a full load from additional deliveries in the same areas (which had not been explained to us at pickup). In addition, and the largest problem, was that expensive furnituire (leather recliners valued at $2,400 eadh) were badly damaged with deep scrapes and "rope burns" from straps too tightly drawn and/or rubbing against other items in the van. The chairs are not repairable (according to local experts) as you can't match the leather color, grain and patina on large sections of the chairs, and the numerous deep scuffs cannot be buffed out). I had paid for $20,000 worth of additional replacement insurance, but after more than three months of calls, correspondence, providing photos and receipts, I was only offered $990.00 total for the damage, with them claiming I should be able to find someone to repair the chairs. In addition, when the furniture was picked up, there were two fairly efficient gentlemen who worked together, with my husband, to load the furniture (much of it very heavy and large). Upon arrival for delivery to my home, there was only one rather small man, clearly overwhelmed, who arrived well after the estimated time and took over four hours to unload only eight items here (several of those being smaller boxes), while blocking my neighbor's driveway. Without my husband's help again (and he has had 4 back surgeries), he would not have been able to complete the delivery. We were heartbroken about the damage to the lovely chairs, and cannot afford to replace them. The individuals we were directed to speak with at Sterling Van Lines showed no interest in assisting us nor concern about our issues after the loads were picked up in California and they had their money. We would definitely NOT recommend them to anyone.

We are very sorry that this customer had a bad experience. We try very hard to make everyone happy. Some of the complaints of this customer are true. We did do damage to the leather chairs due to poor loading. We are correcting this issue with the offending loader. Unfortunately, the customer ordered and paid for coverage with a $500.00 deductible. This means that $500.00 gets taken off the cost to repair the items. We are helping this customer as much as possible and have and are responding to her needs. We are reimbursing this customer for the cost of repair of the leather items minus the $500.00 deductible. This is what the customer requested. We do not and have not and will not charge the customer for erroneously delivered items.

I set up appointment to have one thing moved from my home into my reserved rental truck. Due to resolving two different emergencies I could not foresee, I was not ?with truck? by the 11:00 A.M. appointment time. I was on time, even though two-blow-out tires (white vehicle) demanded my undivided attention the previous evening from 7:30 P.M. until 11:30 P.M. Saturday morning I had to drop off the key for my white car and I had to quickly arrange for a friend to drive me to Tujunga - - as I was told I could not retrieve my gold car after 6 P.M. on Friday evening, as was planned previously. So, by the time I had a chance to get the reserved rental truck, the Sterling movers (2) were called back via the company cell-phone. I told their manager ?Please let me go get the rental truck to eventually utilize his workers.? When I made the appointment for service provider I asked if I could cancel the appointment if an emergency arose. He said ?No. There won?t be any number in order to cancel the work order.? He said that he would send along a moving truck in case I discovered that some things in storage would need to be taken to a vault of mine. I said I did not think that that would be the case. For instance I just needed assistance at the reserved rental truck and assistance with carrying heavy items from my storage rental locker to my reserved rental truck. Never did I request a Sterling Moving Van. And I could not possibly handle both car emergencies on Friday night. It was beyond my control, and Mike S. needed to deliver parts in Northridge. The Sterling truck was parked in front of my home; it was abandoned at 11:00 A.M. and the company ordered for them to arrive at 9:30 A.M. Clearly I stated that I guessed I could not be meeting anytime other than between ten and eleven A.M. The workers arrived at 9:30 A.M. and phoned me about 10:50 A.M. - - without leaving any message whatsoever. By 11:30 am outside at the Sterling truck the two movers appeared. They were technically thirty minutes late. Since I never got the rental truck that day and because I had unexpected emergencies spring up, the movers didn?t get to provide me service. I had issues communicating with them. Then, the company commenced to charge me for two hours of work. The bill was higher than it was for the transport of my vault into their facility; that bill was $180.00. In addition to the $283.50 of the two movers showing up, I am being charged for their damaged cell phone $110.00. It is outrageous that the two movers accuse me of throwing their cellphone to the ground. When I spoke to their boss with their phone, we were all standing in a grassy park. This is a cul-de-sac with Piedmont Park in the middle with about six benches. This is a complete fabrication. After receiving the bill, I called to ask what was going on and the employee became impatient and irritated. It was then that he accused me of being racist, repeatedly. In the midst of this frustrating experience I was very distraught and my have said something quietly that they could have taken offensively - -but, nothing racial. Overall, I feel very taken advantage of and wrongly treated by this company. I must add that I paid two checks in-person on December the 30th; this included a late charge. These two checks were banked no earlier than about February 9th. Please not that I waited for the one and one-half hours before the rental truck clerk told me that since I said I had no experience of driving a truck, that he felt it was not going to be wise to rent to me the twenty-six foot truck after all. Also, note that the company?s billing statement does not give any reason (label) to the $110.00 charge. I read your ridiculous response and it is filled with lies.

Although this customer (outpatient or no) is allowed to walk around freely in society, we do not think it is fair or just for us, as a company; to be penalized based on data from someone who so easily fabricates wrong and defaming information. The customer, member, was a customer that we had in storage. She hired two of our men to load a rental truck. We were to arrive by 10:00 am on the morning she requested. Our men arrived by 9:30am. By 10:am our men were looking all around for the customer and calling her and leaving messages. We were unable to locate the customer or get any return calls until after 11:30am. We finally did locate the customer and tried to help her. The customer was unable to rent the truck from the truck rental company. Someone at the rental company had said that she was not mentally capable of driving a truck (they thought she was insane and would not rent to her). The customer asked to use our driver’s cell phone. She called our foreman and ordered him to have our men rent a truck from the rental place for her. This is not a service we provide. She was told that we would not do this. She began screaming at the foreman and calling him a “dirty (reference race”), “expletive” and used many other racial slurs and profanities. She then threw the cell phone many feet away where it crashed onto the pavement and was damaged. After being sworn at and much other racial slurs and verbal degradation, our men decided to leave. She then planted herself in front of our truck and refused to move. When we called the police she finally moved out of the way. Before the men left, there were several neighbors of hers that told us to call them if they needed any witnesses. Our service for hourly labor starts at a 4-hour minimum, We did not charge the customer for the 4 hours that we spent with her. We did charge for 2 hours of using the men’s time. We also charged her $110.00 for the damaged cell phone that is no longer useable. Our driver had to buy another phone. We are relieved that the customer has left us. We will consider her debt to us paid and are glad that it is over. Our men were verbally abused and treated as though they were degraded animals. We reserve the right to service only customers that will respect the dignity of their fellow man.

The pick up in California was on time and quick. The delivery time was said to be 2 - 6 weeks but it took 7 1/2 weeks to be delivered in Pennsylvania. I called several times and it went to voicemail. When I finally got through to someone, she asked me to list - off the top of my head - everything that I wanted moved. I had just received another quote from another company where they came to my place and took inventory, so her request seemed ...imprecise. Also, the woman said she was pretty busy, so I should get back to her by email since she's usually on the phone. Sterling's quote came in slightly lower than the other company, but I was afraid they hadn't approximated my stuff correctly and that it would end up being more on the day of the move, so I went with the other company. Also, I got the impression they were really to busy to take the appropriate time with my things.

It worked great. We had an heirloom piano moved to my brother in law in Houston. The driver of the truck that eventually moved the piano kept calling me from wherever he was stopping throughout the country to let me know where he was and when he would be getting into Chicago. He also managed to hire a temporary guy who showed up when the truck did and moved the piano with him. It was an incredibly smooth operation considering it was a truck coming across the country.
Description of Work: They moved a piano from Chicago to Houston.
The movers showed up right on time (called ahead as well to inform me that they we're on there way) packed up my house and then moved me into my new house. The guys worked smoothly and efficiently, very little talk but quite a bit of sweat. I was impressed with both of their work ethic. No damage whatsoever as well. I received a followup call the next day from the main office informing me that they were crediting me 300 dollars on my credit card due to a mix-up on the final bill. (I signed it and certainly had no clue that any mistake took place.) Both movers were normally long haul movers and there is a different boxing charge on those types of moves (I only moved a mile) so they made a mistake in the calculations. So I not only had a great experience with the move...but found corporate honesty to boot. Was a good day all around.
Description of Work: Moved me out of one house and into another.
These men were such nice people who made absolutely issue taking on this huge job that my husband and I would have never been able to do. Carlos is the picture of a hard working, honest guy who really just wants to help.
Description of Work: Sterling moved a extremely fragile piece of artwork that had even more sentimental value, from California to Florida for my family. It was crated and moved by them. The item is 6 feet by 6 feet and very heavy. Instead of simply dropping it in my garage, as I know they were expecting, Carlos and Mike got this thing up over a second story outdoor balcony in to a loft that is only accessible by a narrow winding staircase.
