Don Janssen was recommended by another contractor we hired, and after talking to him and getting his bid we hired him to do a complete exterior paint job on our house. He was hired on his supposed eye for detail and being a perfectionist. His bid was on a form letter with another company's license # on it. When asked about it, he replied that they worked together sometimes, which is why the other company's name was present. We did not think too much of it at the time. Don came out the next day and pressure washed the exterior to allow it to dry over the weekend. On the following Monday, his "crew" showed up. His "crew" through the entire time he was there was only 1 man who he sub-contracted out to. Don would show up during the morning, and then leave. Sometimes we saw him again during the day, and sometimes we didn't. His man would not take any suggestions on his work until he talked to Don. After going back and forth with Don on his worker's lack of detail, I had another contractor come and inspect his work. He was not impressed at all. I also called the company whose name and license # appeared on the original bid. The license was valid for this other company, but not for Don Janssen. The company owner said that Don should not have been issuing bids under his company name at all. Upon further checking, we discovered that Don Janssen Drywall had their license suspended due to losing their bond. So not only was he not licensed, he was working with no bond in case of any accident on our property. We immediately informed him that his services were no longer needed. We had never dealt with a contractor before, so we did learn a valuable lesson. We would not recommend Don Janssen to anyone. And if any one is thinking of hiring a contractor, be sure to check their license and bond. A good contractor will gladly provide these for you. And never pay any money during the job unless that amount was included in the original bid. We learned the hard way.
Description of Work: Exterior prep on fascia board, stucco, under hangs, doors, and garage door. Some coats of paint were applied, but not enough. All in all the work performed was not up to our standards, and at best was just thrown on. Even with Don Janssen directing his guy on how to do the job, he still did lousy work. The attention to detail was non- existent.

The price was very competitive with other contractors. The estimated time required was two days for ceiling removal plus one day for painting. The entire job took 5 days. For me, the time to do the job was very important so I was not pleased with how long it the fact that it took longer than expected as I was waiting on the job to be completed so I could move in. The quality of the work was good. There were some minor spots to be touched up but that is to be expected. I also looked at another job these guys were doing and their quality is consistent. The guys cleared away all their trash and did some other stuff like painting the vents and replacing the air filters which was beyond the job task. Overall, I would probably use this company again, bearing in mind that the time frame may not be realistic.
Description of Work: Removal of acoustic ceiling and paint ceiling throughout house.
