I could not use him because he was not willing to look at the job before pricing it and wanted a flat fee regardless of how small the bathroom was
Description of Work: I called to get an estimate to remodel four very small bathrooms of approximately 7' x 4'. He said he would charge me $15,000 per bathroom otherwise he wouldn't be interested. I explained to him that I needed quality work but very simple and basic materials used so it should cost him about half or less of what he was asking. I have been in the real estate business for 30 years and I know what these things cost. The fact that he wasn't even willing to look at the bathrooms before giving me an estimate, coupled with his disregard for my budget concerns and fair pricing and made him a bad choice for my project. That was my experience although I see he has had some very positive ratings. I'm not sure what happened with me but it was definitely disappointing. Good luck

Response from MF Construction & Design Inc
We are sorry you are disappointed, however, even if it is a small bathroom, it is still the same amount of work for each bathroom. I respectfully disagree when you said I did not consider your budget concerns. We have special crews that work on each trade (regardless of size) which includes demolition, framers, electricians, plumbers, insulation, drywall, tile work, cabinetry, painters, finished carpentry/carpenter and shower door installation. Also, I was happy to come and meet with him and see his projects, however, he declined by stating it was not necessary if this was my minimum price, and then he hung up on me. Nevertheless, we wish you the best on completing your projects.

This has been our second positive experience with MF Construction and Design. Mike’s team did an incredible job prepping the house given the significant damage in several areas of the siding. The entire house was caulked to provide an extra level of insulation and protection from weather and insects; over 150 tubes of caulk used on the prep! The project was organized and efficient with workers that were friendly and punctual. The work was completed over a month ago and I am still very impressed by the craftsmanship and attention to detail. As mentioned in a previous review, the workers from MF Construction and Design produced beautiful work while being communicative throughout the process.
Description of Work: We recently contracted MF Construction and Design, Inc. for a project because of excellent work they have done in the past (please see previous review). Highlights from this project included: **Install new weather proof doors on garage and guesthouse Prep entire exterior of house, garage, and guesthouse for painting **Replacing severely damaged siding, repair and fill minor damage / wear-and-tear, sanding entire exterior surfaces to remove peeling paint, applied caulk on EVERY piece of siding, high pressure water wash to remove dirt & dust prior to paint application. **Paint exterior siding and doors & window sashes with premium Primer followed by premium exterior paint. **Side project included demo and removal of an old kiln, cutting and capping of a gas line, and clean up.

Our experience in dealing with Mike and MF Construction and Design was very positive. The job was scheduled on very short notice, completed with impeccable detail, priced fairly, and was finished ahead of schedule. We had expect the job to last two weeks however all of the work was done in 10 days. I received multiple text messages and phone calls from Mike regarding the progress throughout the job. The workers from MF Construction and Design produced beautiful work while being communicative throughout the process. Having had bad experiences with contractors in the past really makes me appreciate the honestly and high quality of work provided by Mike's team. The job was done quickly and correctly without any wasted efforts or materials. I was informed each day about the progress of the job and the upcoming milestones for the following days. I would strongly recommend MF Construction and Design for any job, big or small, because their craftsman ship is excellent and integrity is admirable.
Description of Work: We recently had a plumbing issue that caused extensive damage to our lath and plaster living room ceiling. I had called Mike from MF Construction and Design for a quote on pricing for the repair of the ceiling. We ultimately contracted MF Construction and Design to remove and replace the plaster with drywall, install recessed lighting, and paint the interior. We also had a couple of small jobs involving fixing a fence to the back yard and repairing wood rot to our balcony.

We tasked Mike at MF Construction with an extremely large project, which involved transforming a 1940s house to a modern colonial style home. The passion and commitment to quality and workmanship was second to none. Not only does Mike understand all the issues that come with a huge remodel, his strength is his ability to keep the project moving forward from beginning to end without taking shortcuts. His crew is comprised of seasoned professionals that only do the highest quality work, and Mike’s stringent quality control ensures their work is top-notch. He was always reachable (by phone or text) and towards the end of the project was working 7 days a week in order to see it to completion. I can say for certain that there are no contractors out there that have his level of commitment. At the end of the day, everyone just dreams about the renovations they see on HGTV, but Mike can actually turn those dreams into reality.
Description of Work: Complete remodel/rebuild, kitchen, bathroom, painting, windows, electrical, plumbing, landscaping, etc.
Mike and his team at MF Construction did a better job than I could even imagine with our project. The renovation was a good experience from start to finish. Mike sat down with us and took care to make sure he understood exactly what it was we wanted to do, and then executed on our idea to create a fantastic product that we are absolutely over the moon about! On top of producing good results, Mike's team was courteous, unbelievably clean and unobtrusive. I will use Mike for all of my house-related work, including some landscaping work we'll need done in the not too distant future. No exaggeration - it's hard to imagine a better renovation experience.

Mike at MF Construction was great to work with. When we started our project we could not find anyone (friends, relatives, co-workers) who could fully recommend a contractor without some reservation. We highly recommend Mike. We wanted the addition to blend in with the style of our our 1940's home. Mike successfully did this. We are greatly pleased with the high quality of workmanship and materials recommended. You also never had to wonder where he was. Mike was at our site on a daily basis (we lived through the construction) and quickly responded to questions by text or phone. When things did not go as planned he immediately addressed the problem. Mike and his crew (the 2 Luises) are very professional and trustworthy. He finished our project ahead of schedule.
Description of Work: We added 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, laundry to our existing home. Re-roofed the whole house, new HVAC, and tankless water heater.
My husband and I highly recommend MF Construction & Design Inc. for any home remodeling or new home construction. Mike Maman made our remodeling project so easy. First of all Mike really listens. He understood what we wanted and gave us a quote (which he followed!) that was at least $10,000.00 under a quote we had been given last year – and he offered a larger project. He gave us a starting date and then followed thru – starting and finishing on time. Mike was also very professional when dealing our city for work permits and inspections. We appreciated how simple he made this step for us. Mike’s work crew is terrific. They are careful, precise and are proud of what they do. The painter who took care of our two new window units and our new French doors took extra time and did an amazing job. We were never overwhelmed by too many workers or loud noises – or the mess associated with a construction project. Everyone arrived early and everything was cleaned up before they left for the day. Our house is beautiful. My husband is so pleased because it is just what he envisioned! Mike never tried to change our minds about what we wanted – he just made our ideas come to life. Everyone in our neighborhood is very impressed – not just because our home is beautiful but because of what a small impact this project made on there lives. It’s good to keep the neighbors happy too.
Description of Work: Design and build a new deck. Replace windows with double glazed, double hung wood windows. Replace double French doors. Replace roof. Replace dry rot in wood sidings. Install 3 ft. high river rocks to match existing pond. Install drainage. Waterproofing. Framing and electrical work. Painting interior and exterior.

I used MF Construction and Design as the contractor to build a large covered patio in my backyard, attached to the back of my house. Working with Mike was a pleasure from beginning to end. First, I should talk about the finished product. The patio looks amazing, and the quality of the workmanship is top notch. It?s going to be fantastic for entertaining, and it?s actually better than we envisioned before the project began. It?s a large covered patio, with benches all around, a ceiling fan, and steps leading down to the back yard. Second, Mike had fantastic suggestions and input. Not knowing much about construction myself, I relied on Mike for some great suggestions on the optimal materials and layout. He was very knowledgeable about the benefits and drawbacks of using wood versus a synthetic material and was able to give great advice. He also gave great advice about the spacing between the floor slats (just wide enough to let water drip through, not wide enough to let anything else like a key to fall through), and the spacing of the corbels (to let enough sunlight in, but not so much that you feel you need an umbrella for shade). But despite having great input, he was never pushy about his suggestions, and wanted to make sure he was adhering to our vision for the deck. Third, Mike is a great communicator. He would always respond to my text messages within around 15 minutes, and always answer my phone calls. This is huge?I have worked with other contractors who did great work but were lousy communicators, and it makes a huge difference. Mike was always professional and polite, and he always got back to me promptly. He was also good at communicating what would be coming up, so that if there were pieces I needed to purchase (such as the patio fan), that I would purchase them in time for his installation. Finally, the speed with which Mike finished the project was right on target. He had his workers were there six days a week on every (non-rainy) day from when the project began until when it was complete. The only delay was once when the lumber store took longer than promised to deliver material. Even though it was not Mike?s fault, he was extremely apologetic and frustrated on my behalf?I think he was more bothered by the delay than I was! All in all, he did a great job, and was a pleasure to work with. I have use many contractors on many homes over the past 35 years; MF Construction is, by far, the best!

All work went smoothly, in a timely fashion, very professional, excellent quality. Workers were prompt. Mike was very open and responsive to our plans and needs, always accessible. We wanted this bathroom to be designed in such a way as to be comfortable for us as we age. And, we also did not want it to look too institutional. Mike was able to deliver on both counts and we are more than pleased with the results, a very comfortable, beautiful new bathroom. I might add that this is the third renovation done for us by Mike, the previous two being the kitchen and another bathroom.

A great job on a big job. Very professional, responsive, thorough.
Description of Work: Total kitchen demo and remodel.
All the work went very well and in a timely fashion by Mike, the contractor, and his crew. Everyone arrived promptly as scheduled and worked very diligently when they were here. Most importantly, I have no complaints about how everything progressed, or the quality of work, or the quality of materials. From the outset, Mike listened to what I had in mind for the remodel, adding his expertise to the fulfillment of those ideas, and proceeding to make the plans materialize. There were no unexpected untoward surprises, no major glitches, no shoddy work, no added expenses that were not originally quoted or approved by me while work was in progress. The end result is a beautiful new kitchen/dining area that my husband and I are extremely pleased with - it was worth waiting 40 years for.

The project was very involved given it ended up being a complete renovation of an existing structure. We started with just a master bedroom and kitchen remodel with some new finishes throughout but once demolition had been completed we found a bunch of defective existing conditions ranging from faulty wiring to windows and structure that was previously installed correctly. The more issues we found, it became clear that a full renovation of the house was going to be required. Mike and his team did a great job working with the architect, structural engineer and the city to review the issues as they arouse and then jointly develop cost effective solutions that would have minimal effect to the overall completion schedule for the project. Due to the extended issues, caused by the age of the house and poor construction practiced by previous contractors, we ended up taking a couple extra months to finish but given what was involved this could have been much worse had we been working with a less qualified contractor. I have a very busy schedule and Mike was very accommodating of meeting with me late in the evenings and early in the morning to review the project site and go over project issue and resolution options. Mike was also great at keeping me informed of status and issues throughout the project even when I couldn't be onsite. Often sending pictures, emails, and text when I couldn't talk on the phone. Most contractors would have turned their phones off by 6 pm and I would have been left with more delays. I'm confident that the end product is well worth the wait and the quality of materials and workmanship will stand the test of time for our family for many years to come.
Description of Work: The project consisted of a complete gut and renovation of a 3,500 sq ft house including major structural renovations to create a 26' elevated ceiling above the main living portion of the house. Project also included all new roof, gutters, exterior, electrical, plumbing and HVAC.

It was great. Living in a condo, you deal with other people. Mike doing the job on a Sunday was very helpful.
Description of Work: Mike and his crew redid my bathroom two years ago. They did a great job. A week ago I had a leak, I called Mike and within a half a hour he was here. On a Sunday, he and his man fix everything. They were great.
From initial design and drawings of project, everything was executed very professional and efficiently. Architect had great ideas and great drawings and sketches. Very true to reality. Contractor was always very attentive to the job and to our concerns. Any problems were answered and resolved quickly. Contractor was also able to quickly resolve issues with the city and we were able to get our permits fairly quickly so we can quickly begin our project. Contractor and crew was very professional and prompt every day; very productive and efficient with time. Work done was exactly what was promised with no unwanted surprises. Demo was completed within a couple of days and was trash was cleaned up very promptly. Since my family and I is still residing at the construction location, the crew was very respectful to us and work was done only during the day and nicely cleaned up in the evening. So far everything looks great and have no issues whatsoever. If you want to have your project done quickly without the hassles and worries with other contractors, I would strongly recommend this contractor.
Description of Work: Removed old leaky sloping roof and porch. Installed new roof and shingles. Installed and fixed sloping porch roof. Expanded old porch and added new planters. Installed new porch columns for decorative and functional purposes. Fixed sloping garage roof including new installation of wood panels and shingles. Replaced broken garage windows. Stucco and plaster the house and garage. Installed frame and door moulding.

We moved into our 1947 900 sf home about 5 years ago. It was a foreclosure and, as such, the workmanship and materials used in the bathroom were subpar. For about 5 years, we wanted to rip the entire thing out. We finally had our day and money. We met with Mike who gave us his perspective on the job with a number of options depending on our choice of materials and price range. One thing we really wanted to do was to switch the location of the toilet and vanity to buy some extra room. Mike accomplished that and more. He was attentive and never left us hanging - he stopped by the job every morning and evening and was incredibly responsive by phone. Anytime a we hit a bump in the project - pipes needing to be rerouted to accommodate a weirdly configured vanity, Mike handled it beautifully. The project was always about our satisfaction and making the bathroom what we wanted it to be. We would not hesitate to call Mike again or recommend him to anyone needing a contractor. Hopefully, we can get started on the kitchen next year.
Overall, we were happy with the remodel. There was always someone working on the bathrooms almost 7 days a week and that worked out well with us because we were eager to finish early so life can return back to normal. There were some hiccups along the way with the tile work and plumbing issues. The tile guy that installed the floor of our shower in the master bathroom didn't cut the tiles perfectly so left some gaps between tiles that looked ugly. But Mike and his crew redid the shower floor and it turned out beautifully. Mike and his crew were professional and answered all our concerns along the way. They made recommendations regarding where to place the shower, toilet, and vanity that turned out better than where we originally wanted it place. Mike is easy to reach and always called us back or texted us when we needed him. We highly recommend Mike and his professional team.
Description of Work: We had 2 bathrooms remodeled. Mike and his crew basically gutted the entire master bathroom and pushed out the wall to make a bigger bathroom. They installed new tiles, vanities, updated the lighting to recess lights, and created a separate shower and bath area for the master bathroom. For the smaller bathroom we just had the all the tiles removed and installed new tiles and new toilet and vanity and installed recess lights and fan.

All work was completed in a timely manner. There were some delays, however this was mainly due to the city and not MF Construction. Mike was very flexible in changing the contract which we revised several times. Mike was available immediately every time we had a question. He responded right away to all of our needs by phone or in person. Mike was at our project every day and we appreciated his reliability and professionalism, however here are my comments for areas of the house performed: One problem we're still currently dealing with is our plumbing. In our first month moving in, we had a leakage on the cold water valve below the kitchen sink. The first time, Mike came in and he tighten up the nut and the problem went away temporarily. A couple weeks later, the valve leaked again and unfortunately, I had the call my own plumber twice to come and fix the problem and weld in a new copper pipe because the previous one installed too short. This was "poor workmanship" according to two different professional plumbers. Right now things are fixed and we hope we don't have this problem anymore. Another plumbing issue is that every morning we hear knocking noise running underneath the crawlspace below the kitchen and inside the walls. We also hear a vibration noise in the new addition of the master bedroom. Mike told us that it's expansion of cold pipes but we don't really buy it because it sounds more like loose copper pipes located in inside the wall knocking against the studs. Apparently tearing down the wall and securing loose pipes is expensive so we will just leave it alone. I do want to point out that Mike has tried to alleviate the problem by installing a "hammer" system in the laundry area, and twice called his plumbers to come and put padding so the pipes don't knock against each other underneath the house. Unfortunately neither method works and we are still left with an unresolved knocking and vibration noise. For me this is unacceptable since the whole house was completely gutted and new copper plumbing was installed, therefore, I should NOT run into problems. In regards to plumbing, I would NOT recommend work being done by Mike unless he hires a qualified plumber. Another minor grip I have a problem with is the exterior stucco. Just 2-3 months into moving in, there are cracks around the window, which I believe is a result of poor workmanship. Mike came in once to fix it but there are still cracks regardless. Stucco work is satisfactory. On the bright side, whole house electric wiring was done well with no issues. I would rate this as job performed well done. Painting was done satisfactory. On the interior, there were issues such as excess paint drips but resolved after a few attempts. As for exterior, we are still dealing with "bubbles" being formed on the fascia board. I would say the work is satisfactory Dry wall: We had ran into some difficulty here. The dry wall installed wasn't as straight as we had hoped. Mike went thru a third party company to handle dry wall. Installing cabinets and fixtures have been a problem because of this. I would rate this as satisfactory Kitchen cabinets were very expensive but the quality and build and installation were amazing. Tile installation were ok in some areas and very bad in other areas The cuts were ok and spacing between the tiles were horrible in one of the bathroom. Some were 1/8 and some were 1/16. We got very BAD feedback from family members and friends. I would say this area needs improvements. Hardwood floor was installed well. I did notice a few minor gaps but that is fine. Our biggest problem was that the residual glue on the hardwood floor was not cleaned very well after the installation and made it very difficult to remove later. We still have squeaks after installing brand new subfloors and foundations.

Response from MF Construction & Design Inc
Our company appreciates the review and “A” grade for responsiveness, punctuality and professionalism. However, we are disappointed and honestly perplexed about the overall grade. The customer is upset about the plumbing, but we disagree with his explanation. As he noted, we were always responsive to every issue he had. Mike was always there to fix any concern the customer had. We even hired and paid another licensed plumber to check out the problem because we wanted to satisfy the customer (we have an invoice to prove this). The plumber did not find anything problems. The most confusing statement the customer made is that he also hired another plumber twice to fix the problem. We question this claim because if this was true, the customer knows we would have had NO problem hiring a third plumber to satisfy them or to fix any issues. Obviously we disagree strongly with his review of the cost of his project. This project started out much smaller and then they ended up upgrading the quality and scope of work to almost a completely brand new house. A perfect example is how he started from an $8000 roof (shingle roof) to a $35,000 clay roof. In addition, they initially wanted inexpensive pre-made cabinets and then changed to high quality custom, maple wood cabinets. We appreciated the fact he acknowledged they were” high quality and the build and installation were amazing” therefore, he should understand he received quality products and workmanship at very reasonable prices. Regarding the exterior stucco, the customer failed to mention we only skim coated the old stucco, we did not apply new stucco on the entire house. We only put new stucco on the addition. We strongly believe the reason why the skim coat and stucco cracked was because there was extensive concrete work on the outside and heavy machinery was used by a different company. Regardless, Mike and his crew came back to fix it immediately when asked, and the customer knows we would come back to fix it again if he asked. Mike had many conversation with the owners at the end of the project and many times they stated they were very happy with their beautiful new home. In conclusion, we are pleased to note that the customer acknowledged we completed the work in a timely manner and that Mike was available immediately every time they had a question or concern.

Mike and his crew were always punctual and professional. I have a hectic work schedule and they worked with me to make sure my time was respected. I can't say enough good things about the quality of their work and attention to detail. I trust that Mike and his crew know what they're talking about and what they are doing. I should also mention how hard Mike's team worked all day long with only a 20-30 minute lunch break. They were efficient, courteous and cleaned up after themselves. I will definitely recommend MF Construction to anyone who asks. Some more details about this situation: I don't own this townhouse. There was a leak in the bathtub/shower and the tiles had been applied to sheetrock so that leaked, too. Because there are more bathrooms, we stopped using that bathroom and would have gone without having it repaired; since I didn't want to subject myself or my family to the inconvenience. However, our neighbors also had a leak and were convinced that their leak was being caused by our leak so they convinced the owners of my place to do the remodel. (It turned out both properties had a leak.) So, in essence, I was stuck in the middle and had to put up with the remodel. Yes, going through remodeling for a home I don't own was a pain but that is why I am so grateful to Mike and his crew. They respected my family's time and worked hard to get the job done and done right. They did such a good job that I'm actually happy to have put up with all the inconvenience.

He is a nice person, but fairly aggressive..calling me multiple times for feedback on his estimate. He only gave me one referral to contact for previous work. I would have preferred more current clients and multiple contacts I could choose to contact. This is his business.
Description of Work: Mike Maman made an appointment for a free estimate to remodel my kitchen. He came at the appointed time. He spent 20 mins.taking measurements. He took me to his home where he had completed an entire remodel of his house. His remodeling taste is a traditional style and what I want is contemporary. His home showed very good quality of workmanship in a traditional style. He said he did not have access to a contemporary cabinet builder. He was very detailed oriented. He is a natural salesman. I reviewed his estimate and explained I will compare it to others that are also bidding on this project. He did not show an ability to do spatial design planning to convert my existing space to a contemporary space. He did not show or discuss working drawings to convey specific details in building. I think for the project, he is over priced by 50%. I felt he expected me to give him a check list of items to accomplish. I did not feel his website is up-to-date when project reviews were several years old. Approximate cost of service of $57000.00.

Response from MF Construction & Design Inc
I respectfully and strongly disagree with several of the member's comments. First of all, I believe she has me confused with another contractor. I NEVER called her for feedback on my estimate, and I could easily prove this with documentation. I gave her a detailed estimate and never talked to her about it after our meeting. Regarding the referral, I have at least ten recent and current customers she could have talked to, but I gave her this person only because they both had similar kitchen styles, same scope of work and they both live in the same neighborhood. As for the pricing, I gave her a very reasonable detailed estimate for a full kitchen remodel and I find it very difficult to believe it was over -priced. She requested an estimate for the following: complete demolition; removing supporting walls between kitchen/laundry and kitchen/dining rooms; new electric panel; complete re-wiring of the kitchen, dining room & laundry room; new plumbing in the kitchen and laundry room; installation of LED recessed lights, installation of new drywall in the kitchen, dining and laundry room; complete painting (patch, prime and sand), installation of base molding; installation and fabrication of granite counter tops; installation of under cabinet LED lights; tile flooring; cabinets and more. Once again, the estimate was detailed and yes, at the time of our meeting, I requested a full checklist of items she wanted accomplished because she was not sure how much work she wanted to do. Lastly, I am fully licensed and bonded, and although I know I do not need to justify my price and quality, I believe any professional would consider this an extremely competitive price. Although I respect any member’s right to their opinions, I disagree with this review for the reasons listed above.

The price was just right and they did very good work. I would recommend them to the others.
Description of Work: I used MF Construction & Design for putting on a new roof.
Contractor communicated well all through the project with daily phone calls and text messages. Project started with a complete gut of the existing Art Deco bathroom complete with bright yellow tile. His framer reconstructed the rotted substructure including floor joists and girder under the shower. His electrician and plumber were very good and took approximately 2 weeks for this portion. Next came the reconstruction of the shower including an excellent framing and hot mopping job and now we have a fully functioning shower that functions well and looks great with the inclusion of frameless shower doors. The tile person was innovative in resolving various issues that came up. We did run into a few snafus with the use of existing plumbing fixtures so be prepared to use all new fixtures for plumbing including faucets, toilet, etc. Lastly, as with all construction, there are always minor issues in the details and Mike was always responsive in resolving any issue in a timely and professional manner. The remodel included the installation of a new clawfoot tub, double sink vanity and subway tiled shower. All of the scheduled inspections were completed with flying colors! Essentially, we took a very cramped, poorly functioning bathroom and renovated with timeless amenities to keep with the reformed colonial style of the house. We are very happy with the final product.
Description of Work: Bathroom remodel including replacement of substructure, water, sewer, electrical, tile, installation of fixtures, lighting, claw foot tub.

Mike designed the new closet interior to fit our needs exactly. The finished product is just beautiful on the outside and extremely space-efficient. The new bath cabinet door matches the existing bath cabinet doors perfectly. The built-in kitchen bench is a work of art. All three projects were beyond our expectations when completed. Mike and his team were professional in every way and the carpenter, Alberto, truly has a God-given gift. Mike is a man of his word. We would definitely ask him to help us with any projects in the future.
