After the installation was done in my house, the only question I had with Thrifty was how this kind of a great company usually found in small towns is still existing in a big area like SoCal. The company is a small, family-run beautiful shutters maker that treats you as the most important person in the world. Quality of the shutters is great, communications and price are quite wonderful, and Joel, the owner, is very professional and AMAZING! You cannot go wrong with these guys. You may have to wait a few more days extra for shutters delivery than those big-box guys, such as Home Depot, Lowes and other bigger companies, but with almost half the price of those guys with superior shutters quality. I dealt with 3 different guys, including Joel and Alan, the installer, from the company and they all are quite wonderful. Keep up the great work, Thrifty!

From start to finish Joel and his team did and excellent job. He is out of Anaheim and without hesitation, drove to my home in Venice to measure each window. On the day of installation, the guys arrived within the time stated and with swift precision prepared the windows for the shutter install. Floor coverings under each window. Upon completion, all areas were vaccumed.

Joel came out to give us our estimate. The price was about 1/2 of what was quoted by another company.. Joel said it would take 4-6 weeks and it only took 4. He called to schedule the install which could be done the next day. Alan and Andy - the installers- arrived during the time frame given. Introduced themselves and got to work. The shutters look wonderful and the quality of the service was excellent (took about 2 hrs to install). If we could give them a higher score we would. We highly recommend Thrifty Shutters.

Price point was comparable to others, and service was great: from the initial meet/measurement to the quick delivery of product to the quick install (Appx 1 hr tops), we were thoroughly satisfied with the entire process!

After getting estimates from several other top-quality, well-known vendors who specialize in window coverings (blinds, drapes and shutters) for a difficult-to-solve bedroom window configuration in our rental home, we were left feeling terribly disappointed and with not a lot of good solutions--even after being willing to spend more money than we'd originally budgeted. Both Three-Day Blinds and Smith and Noble offered us a combo platter (drapes, shades, and, for triangular-shaped smaller upper windows, a less-than ideal problem-solve) which required eight to twelve weeks of wait time to install, at a cost of three thousand to thirty-five hundred dollars. Frustrated with the lack of viable solutions and the idea of spending money on shutters (which seemed to be the best idea) that would have to be custom-made for a house we don't own, we were about to give up and live with a jury-rigged "solution" that wasn't pretty and didn't provide shade or light blockage (especially in the morning), when I found the listing for the highly-rated and consistently well-reviewed Thrifty Shutters on Angie's List. Although they weren't local to Santa Monica (and I worried, therefore, they wouldn't consider traveling to accommodate our job), I called Joel Brown, the owner of Thrifty, who returned my call promptly, was gracious and helpful on the phone, asked intelligent questions that made it apparent he would be more than up to the task, and asked if I could please email him some photos of our bedroom windows with measurements, even if they were approximate. After reviewing my email, Joel offered an estimate that I found SHOCKINGLY lower than the others we'd received, and I immediately made an appointment for him to come and measure the windows in person--and see if, perhaps, once he actually saw the configuration, he might change the price of what it would take to "fix" the issue. A few days later, Joel came to our house, samples of the shutters in tow (slat sizes and color), and we found him to be a lovely, easy to talk to, kind man with a totally honest assessment of our situation. An obvious pro with 30 years experience in shutters design, manufacturing and installation, Joel explained in a clear and concise way what would be needed to solve the problem of our triangle-shaped smaller upper windows, which, he admitted, were not typical, but was confident could be addressed, and, for the exact same (estimated) cost he'd offered over the phone--which was less than HALF what we'd been quoted by the other window cover companies. We felt GREAT about working with a small business owner who's so knowledgeable, and advised us expertly on the type of shutters which would work best for our needs--invisible tilt, 4" wooden slats to preserve our much-loved outside view. When we asked about the timetable, Joel was apologetic about the little more than 6 weeks it would take for the installation to happen (due to the holiday season), which was still faster than the other companies we'd consulted had estimated, and assured us that he'd call as soon as he knew the exact date the installers would arrive. As promised, early in the new year, Joel offered an update about the status of our custom shutters order, and said he was hopeful that the installation would take place on the following Wednesday, but asked for a two day "grace period" to allow for any possible delays on the manufacturing and delivery end. Again--as promised, a few days later Joel called to say that our order was ready and the installation was on schedule and that he was sending two installers plus his partner, Tom, who's as familiar with complicated jobs as Joel, which I think he did just to ensure our comfort that everything would go smoothly, which it MORE than did. We could not have been happier with the polite and go-the-extra mile crew (whom we tipped for their hard work, their kind offer to put back the furniture we'd moved out of their way to ease the job, and their immaculate clean up). The installation took about two hours (exactly as Joel had predicted) and we are now the DELIGHTED owners of BEAUTIFUL new shutters (that look at though they've always been a part of the design of our vintage-era beach home). The incredible upgrade of our day to day lifestyle that they provide by offering us heat and light filtering throughout the day, privacy, and the ability to sleep past sunrise (!) is priceless. We could not be happier with the high-end product itself or Thrifty Shutters, who made the whole experience of finding a solution to our three-year-long odyssey to solve the problem of our hard-to-dress bedroom windows amazingly easy and budget-friendly! We will definitely use Thrifty Shutters again, have already recommended Joel to interior designer friends, and offer them the highest possible recommendation as an Angie's list vendor. Thank you, Joel, for a job not just well-done, but one that exceeded our expectations in every way!

I must say, I did my due diligence. I interviewed 5 other competitors, since I had three floors and it's not my first rodeo, I wanted the best quality and the best price. Period. From the very beginning, I was skeptical of the name "Thrifty Shutters", because I wanted the highest quality for our new home. We have a tri-level home with lots of windows, so I was looking for the best product on the market. However, when I met Joel, he was extremely personal and professional. He showed me all of the products that he offered. I had previously met with an interior decorator who offered the top of the line shutter, so I was planning on working with her. Since I already had the appointment with Joel, I kept the appointment and was so glad I did. He was able to get the exact same product for much less, plus his professionalism was reassuring. He kept every promise he made. The shutters were on time and the people who worked in my home were amazing. They were so clean and neat, you wouldn't even know they there. He also offers a lifetime guarantee. The shutters are absolutely gorgeous, the workmanship is second to none. It was so nice doing business with Joel and the level of integrity of Thrifty Shutters. I highly recommend this company. I would be shocked if anyone found a better price, better product or a better work ethic. You can't beat them.

Came on time, did a very professional job, protected the wood floors and the shutters look perfect! I scheduled my appointment with Joel. His colleague Tom arrived on time, inspected the shutters and gave us an estimate. Tom was able to repair them same day. We are very pleased with Thrifty shutters and will contact them again in the future, should we need them. I have also referred them to a relative.

June 2013: I really was interested in shutters for our 3 bedrooms because I like the way they look but I also have two little ones and was tired of waking up at 5:30a m because the sun was shining through their curtains. (To a three year old, if it's sunny, it must be time to wake up and play!) I measured my windows myself and called a few places on Angie's List. Thrifty Shutters gave me the best quote and was very quick to respond to my initial call. Joel came out to my house in Huntington Beach a few days later, brought a sample and accurately measured my windows. I am not the most handy person but his measurements were the same as mine, therefore there was no difference in cost. Joel was very professional, easy to talk to and didn't take up a lot of time. He didn't try to up-sell me either. In approximately 8-12 weeks (I can't remember exactly) the shutters were installed (it took a few hours as they build the boxes on site). They look beautiful, clean easily and are very sturdy as my 1 year old son tries to pull and grab them constantly! The best part is that the rooms darken beautifully for naps and early mornings and my kids now sleep in until 6:30! :) UPDATE: We had 2 more shutters installed downstairs. They are gorgeous. The work was clean and impressive as before. About $950 for downstairs windows.

Thrifty Shutters did a great job repairing a few of our broken Plantation shutters and installing new magnet catch for our shutter doors. They completed the job timely, blended the new shutters with the old, and even showed us how to remove smudges and marks on our shutters. We will definitely call them again for any future issues with our shutters.

I scheduled the job with Joel, who was very prompt and flexible in terms of finding a date and time that worked. I had a bunch of hooks that had come loose on my plantation shutters. Tom arrived promptly, quickly assessed the job, and fixed everything within fifteen minutes. He was very professional and did a great job. I would definitely use them again.

We have window shutters in our front bedrooms that are 15-20 years old. Their dark stained finish was flaking off from age and strong sun exposure. There was also some water damage from when someone turned on the frontyard sprinklers while the window was open. They were quality shutters to begin with and fit perfectly so we were hoping to be able to renovate them but expecting that they would probably need to be replaced. I looked on Angie's List and found Thrifty Shutters, called them, they came out to assess the shutters and give us an estimate. I was very impressed with their knowlege and professionalism. We decided to have Thrifty Shutters make any necessary repairs, sand them down, and refinish them. They delivered and reinstalled them yesterday and the results exceed our expectations. They look like new and work perfectly. I would highly recommend Thrifty Shutters, and we will most certainly call them again when any of our other shutters need refinishing or replacing.

We had purchased a new home with shutters in the main living area on several large windows. With new paint going on the walls and trim- the off white shutters would not work. My house painter would not touch painting the shutters due to the difficulty so I set out to see what it would cost to have them re-finished. I found Thrifty Shutters from an online search. They came out to my house for an estimate. I was a little taken back by the $1400 estimate, but I knew new shutters would be way more expensive. My only concern at the time was how would they look - as I did not want them to look refinished. I signed the contract that day and the shutters were taken away. The frame is NOT taken as well - only the shutters. The guy who came out did a great job highlighting that we will need to match paint. My painter got a can of paint that they were going to use to paint the frames of the shutters and Thrifty Shutters came out to pick up the color sample so they could match the shutters to the frame. I am not going to lie that I was a little worried about this - what if the shutters and frame color did not match. WELL IT DID. The best part was that Thrifty Shutters went out of their way to make sure we were going to be happy. They actually even installed early - before the 4 weeks window. The paint/texture on the shutters is PERFECT! They did their best to adjust the shutters - but keep in mind that they are not taking off the frames so some adjustments could not be made. Eitherway, we are so happy with the work they did and in the end I feel the $1400 was worth it.

Tom was professional, knowledgeable and friendly, therefore, I looked no further; I ordered the shutters right away. Joel from Thrifty Shutters kept me updated on the progress of the order and scheduled my installation according to my schedule. The shutters were installed yesterday and are amazing! Tom was very detailed in the installation of the shutters. My windows seem larger ..... and I am thrilled with the new look of my rooms. I would say to anyone - if you need an update to your home that really makes a difference, you need to look no further - Thrifty Shutters is the way to go!!! The quality of these shutters far exceeded my expectation. These shutters are expertly crafted. And, Tom is an expert installer. The owner was very accommodating.We got some scratches on the shutters but his guys came out and fixed it.We received 6 to 7 quotes and he was not the lowest but he was pretty good.He was very responsive. He responded to my text message and my phone calls.
