About us

Since 1977, Block Tops, Inc. has specialized in custom design, fabrication and installation of high-quality Butcher Block and Solid Surface products. Damien Bates founded the company in July 1977. The initial product line for Block Tops, Inc. was Butcher Block furniture and countertops – hence the name and logo. Over a period of time, the sales of solid surface overtook the sales of Butcher Block and became the company’s primary product line. Block Tops has been featured on multiple episodes of DIY TV’s – “House Crashers”, “Bath Crashers”, “Kitchen Crashers” and “the Ultimate Crash”. We were also selected for the “Jamie Oliver Food Revolution” restaurant renovation in Los Angeles which aired on ABC. We have participated in several national relief events through “World Vision” and other worthy causes. License #: 697258/907823

They were $200 more expensive than the other contractor. They were the higher bidder but they agreed to allow us to see the slabs before they fabricated the countertops. We did have an opportunity to go see the slabs. It was not easy getting past the front office people to get them to allow us go see it but once we got to the foreman from the shop to look at the slabs it was a very good experience. He was very understanding and cooperative. It was a very pleasant experience to work with him there. When the installation people came out it was kind of a very difficult situation but they were able to handle it and eventually did a good job although they kind of made a mess getting it done but they cleaned up after that. So, they did a good job, they were good to work with. It's just that they had some difficulties and kind of made a little of a mess getting it installed.

I purchased countertops (Caesarstone) through Ikea during their 20% off sale. First of all, be aware that Ikea's 20% off sale is not a bargain. These counters are regularly priced at $55/sq ft. With a 20% discount applied that makes them $44/sq ft. There are other companies in the LA area that will do Caesarstone at that $44 price point so if it's not a sale period at Ikea shop around for the better price. That said, the template appointment was professional and thorough. However, the install date came and no counters showed up. Turns out, because we had changed from a farmhouse to undermount sink, there was an additional charge due and they did not fabricate the counters awaiting our payment to Ikea. Thing is they did not communicate this to either me or Ikea so nobody was aware except Block Tops (at least, this is the story I got from Ikea). When that got sorted out, it turned out to be an additional 3 week wait for the countertops (bringing the total wait to 6 weeks), We caved and backed out. Ikea was good about refunding the purchase price and we placed our order through a more reliable company recommended here on Angie's List. This company seems overwhelmed with work and poorly organized when things don't go right. Don't get caught up in the excitement of a new kitchen order at Ikea; make your cabinet purchase, get them installed then call one of the many excellent fabricators in the area. You'll not only save time, you might save money and you'll certainly have a much wider choice of options available to you. Simply, this vendor does not deserve anyone's business.

I purchased an IKEA kitchen including the counter top. I learned the counter top would be done by this company, which is a sub-contractor for IKEA. Everything went wrong and the responsiveness and quality is none existing. They installed one side of the kitchen completely wrong as they measured it incorrectly. The other issue is the counter top for the kitchen island, which ends on one site shorter then the other. They damaged my drywall, painting and so on. All that happened over 6 weeks ago and I tried calling them multiple times. Usually a friendly lady picks up the phone ensuring me that the manager would call me back, which never happens. They also keep blaming my wife that she signed that everything was correct when they measured it. Really? How would she even know if the measured template is correct? Because I bought it through IKEA and have no leverage talking with them directly. IKEA on the other hand keeps telling me that they sub-contract everything to this company. With other words do not use ever their services. Honestly I don't think they are even remotely qualified to do counter tops. I am at a point where I even consider going to the BBB and file an official complain with this company.

We ordered a kitchen from IKEA in May and in July Blocktops was called in to install the countertop. Due to an issue in our wall, we had a slight hump in the corner of the kitchen closest to our sink. During the template appointment, the Blocktops worker informed me that they would have to put extra plywood underneath the corners of the countertop in the lowest areas of the kitchen. I agreed with this suggestion. The Blocktops employees came at the beginning of July to install the countertops and it was clear after they had gone that they had hoisted up the cabinets, thereby causing one of the filler panels to slip and the toe kick to not fit anymore. I attempted to call Blocktops immediately to resolve this issue and had to call daily for three days before my concerns were addressed. Initially they wanted me to wait over a week for an inspection appointment, but I thought that was inappropriate due to the amount of time they took to even take my call and also due to the fact that this was their mistake. They returned and caused even more problems, to the point that we could not install our sink. Here is a list of the issues we had with Blocktops: 1) The filler panel between the corner cabinet and sink was crooked because they moved the cabinetry (it was not crooked before). 2) They hoisted up the cabinets to the point that the toe kick had to be replaced and the cabinet was not vertically level with the door frame (it was before). 3) They left the sink cutout in our backyard. 4) They did not cut out the plywood from the left part of the sink ? we had to call them back to correct this. 5) Called three times before they gave me an appointment, which was a week later despite the problem clearly being their fault ? I had to push to get them to come sooner. 6) The inspection employee was informed that he was coming to look at an issue with the install on the stove, which wasn?t even the problem in the first place ? bad communication within the company. 7) The inspection employee said that ?He didn?t do the install? trying to absolve himself or the company of guilt. Someone has to take some accountability! 8) When the inspection employee cut out the sink plywood, they cut notches in it that made it virtually impossible to install the sink. Beyond that, the sink could not be installed because the cutout was 1) too small and 2) no plywood was underneath for the IKEA fasteners to connect to Finally after escalating the issue to IKEA and taking some photos to IKEA to prove our point (Blocktops insisted that everything was installed as it should be), IKEA insisted Blocktops return. He confirmed that the workers should not have cut out so much plywood from under the sink because it did make it very, very difficult to install. At no point did anyone confirm that they had hoisted up our cabinetry, despite us having before and after photographs to prove it. If they had dealt with us politely to come to a beneficial conclusion, I might not be even writing this post. But the office staff in particular was just straight up rude. We dropped a lot of money into our kitchen and to be left hanging and have to call big brother IKEA in made us reconsider if we ever would buy a kitchen (or anything else for that matter) from IKEA as they contract such shoddy contractors!!

Top Source is a subcontractor for counter tops. They must adhere to strict customer service rules imposed by the home improvement store that contracts which means we get immediate and satisfactory service, timely installation, and conflict resolution, as well as good price discounts. I received a rapid reply to my inquiry but the salesman didn't show up for our appt. and he didn't call. Incensed, I contacted the home improvement store, which made it right immediately. The sales manager from Top Source called, apologized profusely, made another appt. and appeared personally along with the man who stood me up. I was very impressed with the timely response and apology and with the in-home consultation. Despite the fact that I didn't go forward with the project at this time, I would definitely return to their counter top company, Top Source, in the future when I'm ready to do the work. Top Source gets a lot of business through its affiliation and it doesn't want to jeopardize that rela
