Note: This C & C Hardwood Floors is not the one listed at the State Contractor's License Board -- we found that out too late. Herrera said he had an ugly divorce, so he had to move and change his address and information, etc. and that things had gotten really bad. I now believe the business "same" name is deliberate on Herrera's part. HERRERA IS NOT LICENSED. I learned, therefore, he cannot charge more than $500 for any work that he does, including materials -- if he does, it is considered fraud in the State of California. Anyone coming into contact with him where he tries to charge more than $500 should report him to the State Contractor's License Board. Because he is not licensed, he is also not bonded. Do not contract with this man. He will lie and then lie some more. I tried to talk to him numerous times as problems arose. He just argues and argues, very loud and becomes agitated and nasty. When I finally confronted him about all the problems we saw, he was even more belligerent and threatening. He actually made a gesture to spit on me. We insisted on a certain type of flooring from ARK so that didn't become a problem. Thank goodness. However, Herrera blamed me, blamed the flooring, blamed the house -- everything except himself. He insisted his work was flawless and that his many years of experience were incomparable and that the other experts who looked at our new horrible floor were crazy. The flooring inspectors said that the floors are ruined, but that we could try to have them sanded and refinished, which is also expensive. We have decided to live with the floors for another year to see if they buckle and cup more, or if the sanding-refinishing might work. We just don't know yet.
Description of Work: Prepare floor surfaces to receive 3/4" hardwood floor; install hardwood floor in living room, dining room, kitchen, family room; install bullnose treads for stairs. Cesar Herrera said he and his "crew" had a method of moving the furniture so that we would not have to worry about it. That did not happen as he complained about his bad back immediately and his son, who was part of his crew, is apx. 19 yrs old and totally inexperienced with everything. I have no idea where the other guy came from -- perhaps a day worker? Herrera is extremely rude and difficult to deal with. I almost ordered him off the property on at least three occasions. The flooring is crooked is many places, the boards have cracks between where they do not come together. There are many places where every other board is the same length -- very unprofessional. We had to stop the job and contact other professionals to come to tell us what was wrong. The flooring is all warped (they call it cupping). We originally thought it was b/c the subflooring was not properly prepare. Cesar Herrera said his method of preparing the subfloor was 100% guaranteed not to absorb water or have any water problems. Apparently not true. However, it turns out the biggest problem was he did not allow the proper expansion space around the perimeter of the flooring. He said he only needed a quarter inch, which isn't true, and in most places he left no space whatsoever. He nailed the stair treads to the wood underflooring so that the big nail holes still show -- b/c the treads were prefinished. The treads and stair parts are also crooked. He left his son and the other worker here most of the time and did not properly supervise them. But I came to the conclusion that also doesn't know what he is doing. He talked a big game -- his 27 years of professional experience -- never ever had a problem before. That I was the only one who had ever ever had a problem with him. He had taken the cardboard boxes that the flooring came in, folded them out and put them all over the tops of the newly installed floor. He said this was to protect the flooring until the painters were finished. We found the big mess and the cupping a week later when we removed the cardboard boxes from the top of the floors. My heart sank. I wish I had followed my first instincts to get him out of my house. His was not the lowest bid. Job start: Feb. 2011 (part of 8 weeks for floors to acclimate inside our home) - job end Aug. 2011.

Our floors had been covered for years. Some of the areas were very nice. However, other parts were damaged by water problems. Che and his team came in and sanding the floors removing most of the damaged areas. In other damaged areas where we had decorative patterns in the hardwood floors, we was able to repair so that it didn't stand out and mess up the flow of the design. After sanding he even spent time finding the right finish to match our taste.
Description of Work: Refinish hardwood floors;sanding and finish.
